RIBBON CUT ON NEW WALKER COUNTY JAIL MELANIE THIBODEAUX PHOTO Walker County Sheriff Clint McRae (center w/ head down) takes pride in cutting the ribbon on the new Walker County Jail at the recent Grand Opening ceremonies held at the Jail site. About 150 citizens and dignitaries were on hand for the occasion as Jail Administrator, Captain Steve Fisher (left of Sheriff McRae) also expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the construction project which took a little more than a year. Representatives from The Huntsville Chamber of Commerce, the City of Huntsville, Walker County and the Jail Committee all stood for the picture. Jail administration will be working in the coming weeks to transfer inmates and offices to the new building.

SPRING HEALTH FAIR HELD

MELANIE THIBODEAUX PHOTO Walker County Sheriff Clint McRae (left) with Walker County Judge Danny Pierce as they recognize friends and dignitaries in the crowd on hand for the opening of the Walker County Jail and Ribbon-Cutting last week. McRae thanked county officials as well as the citizens of Walker County for their support in getting the jail funded and built. Explaining that the new jail was not a want but a necessity, he said that the State Jail Commission had worked with Walker County as long as possible in keeping the old jail open. However, safety concerns necessitated the new project. He also indicated that the project had come in $500,000 under budget and that he appreciated the hard work of the contractors and architects, as well as the supervisors. The brief presentation was followed by the ribbon-cutting and citizen tours of the new facility.

MELANIE THIBODEAUX PHOTO Members of the Walker County Healthy Initiatives team were on hand to provide information to Walker County employees who attended and participated in the Spring Health Fair held last week at the Veterans Conference Center. Pictured left to right are Walker County Extenstion Service Intern Tabitha Lopez, Walker County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences Meredith Henry and Walker County Healthy Initiatives Grant Coordinator Ce Cowart Schlicher. Organizers indicated the event was well attended and vendors were pleased to help disseminate health and lifestyle informtion. April 3, 2014 • walkercountyjournal.com • Walker county journaL
