Sammy the Bearkat found the easy way through the streets of Huntsville in the Sam Houston State University Homecoming Parade last Thursday. The annual pre-homecoming event was themed “Bearkat Dynasty” paying homage to the popular Duck Dynasty show. There were many floats and trucks with hunting blinds and celebrating the impending demise of the Lamar Cardinal, the Bearkats’ opponent in Saturday’s Homecoming game.

Walker Co Criminal Justice Community Planning Group meeting held recently

©MELANIE THIBODEAUX PHOTO

Walker County Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator speaks to the citizens and community leaders that participated in the October 1st Walker Co Criminal Justice Community Planning Group Meeting. The annual gathering helps develop a plan to address issues within the county and has break-out group meetings that include Faith-based services, Medical Services, Law Enforcement, Education and Youth. Anderson explained that it is imperative that there be a community plan in place to address all of the criminal justice issues within the county. He said that those counties who have implemented their community plans are given the opportunity to apply for grants through the Governor’s office. He explained further that the funds from the grants can help with education and criminal justice needs awareness, as well as afford the county to hire additional personnel to help address the needs of the county during emergencies or natural disasters. The event was well attended this year and saw officials from the county, the city, HISD, health care, law enforcement and SHSU, among others. Pregnancy Care Center Board Chair Charlene Sandel speaks to the 14th Annual gathering of supporters for Huntsville’s faith-based organization that provides free services, education and support to those in need of reproductive and/or counseling services. Her plea, this year, included requesting generous funding from benefactors for the PCC’s new home, as they purchased the old Huntsville Funeral Home. After renovations and remodeling, the facility now provides a welcome respite for those hurting and in need. The organization was pleased to announce that they had served over 2,000 clients in the last year and had saved at least 24 babies from abortions. In addition to the pregnancy services, the PCC also provides STD tests for women and men. While they provided over 700 STD tests and over 750 pregnancy tests in the last year, they expect those numbers to rise rapidly with the close of Planned Parenthood in Huntsville.
