Donors from major trusts to those who bought a brick had demonstrated their generosity, Mr Finlayson said. “That’s continuing the great philanthropic tradition of Charles Rooking Carter, who provided financial support and advocacy to the town in its early days.” United States Ambassador to New Zealand David Huebner said he was from a small town in rural Pennsylvania that was similar in size to Carterton. He recognised the same spirit in the people and honoured “the miraculous nature of a facility like this in a town this size”. Other guests included Masterton Mayor Garry Daniell, South Wairarapa Mayor Adrienne Staples, Wairarapa MP John Hayes and the electorate’s Labour candidate Michael Bott.
