Donors from major trusts to those who bought a brick had demonstrated their generosity, Mr Finlayson said.

“That’s continuing the great philanthropic tradition of Charles Rooking Carter, who provided financial support and advocacy to the town in its early days.”

United States Ambassador to New Zealand David Huebner said he was from a small town in rural Pennsylvania that was similar in size to Carterton. He recognised the same spirit in the people and honoured “the miraculous nature of a facility like this in a town this size”.

Other guests included Masterton Mayor Garry Daniell, South Wairarapa Mayor Adrienne Staples, Wairarapa MP John Hayes and the electorate’s Labour candidate Michael Bott.

A bit about Naomi:

Naomi was born and raised in Masterton, on a dairy farm near Te Ore Ore marae. She was educated at Totara Drive Primary School, Hiona Intermediate and Wairarapa College where she was appointed Head Girl in 2003.

In 2004 Naomi moved to Dunedin where she attended Otago University, completing a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Business (Distinction). While at University Naomi was a recipient of the Wairarapa Moana Tertiary scholarship and also received a number of awards, including the NZIM – Horace Tilly Memorial Prize for attaining the highest grades overall in 300-level Management studies. Naomi was also fortunate to be sponsored by the Otago University School of Business to attend an Enterprisers programme at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia. She is currently a member of the Otago University School of Business Advisory Board which includes a number of esteemed executives and business people from across New Zealand.

After completing her university studies Naomi moved to Wellington to work for Ernst and Young in the area of Business Advisory and Risk Management. In this mahi she has worked across New Zealand in both the public and private sector. She has also undertaken projects with a number of iwi organisations including governance and operational restructuring following various collective Treaty settlements. She has spent the last two years working with Te Wa¯nanga o Aotearoa in the role of Operational Risk Manager. Naomi returns to Ernst and Young in 2012 to focus on performance improvement in the Government sector.

Naomi is excited for the opportunity to assist and support the mahi of the Wairarapa Moana Incorporation and Trust.
