To fulfill their quota, commercial paua divers are taking the easy option by gathering paua directly off the beach. They deplete the easy accessible beach area which then leaves nothing for the general public. Coastal residents are annoyed with ‘lazy’ commercial fishermen fulfilling their quota from popular beach areas because by the time the general public arrives to gather their regulation ten paua, there’s nothing left. “They talk about poachers cleaning out the area but these guys are the worst and they’re protected by the Fishing Industry”. Built in 1912 the Martinborough Town hall is at serious risk of tumbling down. Constructed out of clay bricks with no reinforcing bars installed, the hall has been identified as an earthquake risk. The hall is listed as a heritage building but the cost to bring it up to scratch could prove quite expensive. A public meeting scheduled for the end of November may decide its future. The Whaiora Medical Centre in Masterton provides low-cost GP services for Ma¯ori and Pacific Islanders and for those that cannot afford healthcare. As a general health practice Whaiora set very high standards and worked very hard to achieve accreditation. As a result, they have received what can only be described as a “Super Warrant of Fitness: from an accreditation system run by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. Nga¯ti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa and Rangita¯ne are working with Whaiora Medical Centre and Te Hauora Ru¯nanga o Wairarapa on a joint proposal to become a Government recognised Wha¯nau Ora provider. Wha¯nau Ora is a wha¯nau-centred approach to wha¯nau wellbeing and development with an inclusive approach that will provide services and opportunities to families throughout the Wairarapa. Pongaroa Hotel celebrated 100 years with a centennial celebration to mark the historic occasion. Originally the hotel started out as the Bank of New Zealand and about the late 1940s the building became the Pongaroa Hotel. On the centennial celebration programme was the Rodger Fox Big Band, the Tui girls, a 1911 period dress competition along with kids activities and good old-fashion country food with the day’s celebration ending with an evening of dance and entertainment.

Next year, Makoura College will be one of eight schools in New Zealand to open a Military Service Academy. Operating in association with the New Zealand Defence Force, the military-focused programmes are designed to encourage students to continue with their education within a motivating and disciplined learning environment. At risk 15, 16 and 17-year olds are dropping out of school yet studies have shown that academies of this type have helped to improve student behaviour, academic achievement while working towards NCEA Level 1 literacy and numeracy.
