To fulfill their quota, commercial paua divers are taking the easy option by gathering paua directly off the beach. They deplete the easy accessible beach area which then leaves nothing for the general public. Coastal residents are annoyed with ‘lazy’ commercial fishermen fulfilling their quota from popular beach areas because by the time the general public arrives to gather their regulation ten paua, there’s nothing left. “They talk about poachers cleaning out the area but these guys are the worst and they’re protected by the Fishing Industry”.
Built in 1912 the Martinborough Town hall is at serious risk of tumbling down. Constructed out of clay bricks with no reinforcing bars installed, the hall has been identified as an earthquake risk. The hall is listed as a heritage building but the cost to bring it up to scratch could prove quite expensive. A public meeting scheduled for the end of November may decide its future.
