COMMENTS FROM THE CLUB This weekend we host our Women’s WPL and CWCL games. We welcome Halswell United and Cashmere Tech to Kendall Park. Our CCL and Reserves are away at Clare park playing Burwood AFC. The Reserves kick off first at 12.30pm, followed by our CCL First Team. Good luck tomorrow lads! We wish all our teams playing in and around Christchurch all the very best. On the 31st August the club is holding it’s annual Quiz Night Fundraiser at CBK in Kaiapoi. This is always a fun night out and a great way for the club to fundraise. Please show your support by either booking a table for the quiz night or donating an item for our raffle or auction. Coming Thank you, Amy Pawson General Manager
WAIMAK UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE Waimak United VS Halswell United 12.30PM Kick off Kendall Park Turf Coaches Comments This weekend we have both the WPL and CWCL team playing at home. WPL take on Halswell and CWCL have a top of the table clash with Cashmere Technical. Battles with Halswell previously have been hard fought and we expect nothing less this weekend. The last round saw both the WPL and CWCL coming away with positive results, but the most pleasing thing associated with both was the way players applied themselves from start to finish. The WPL had a hard fought 1 nil win against and improving University side at Ilam fields while the CWCL had to battle against Hornby to produce the same result. As mentioned in previous write up the girls have made steady improvements as we have progressed through season and this week the intensity in training has been top class. This week I wanted to pay a special mention to two people who have worked tirelessly for all the club’s members to get the season underway after all of the implications associated with COVID. Both Amy and Adam are a credit to the club and it is fair to say that without either we would not have been able to transition into a football season as smoothly as we have. So I ask if you see either of them throw them a big high 5 and give them the thanks that they deserve. The WPL team would like to wish the CCL management and players all the best for this weekend’s game as well as all other teams playing in the Waimak United colors this weekend. The players and the team would like to thank the club for its continuing support. Lastly and more importantly we would like to thank all our loyal supporters and hope that you all enjoy the game today.

WAIMAK UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB MEN’S CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE Waimak United VS Burwood AFC 2.45PM Kick off Clare Park Coaches Comments This week sees the start of Round Two for our CCL First Team and Reserves with the First Team sat 3 points off 1st place despite having lost the first 3 games. Since then we have won 4 in a row scoring 14 goals and conceding 5 in those games. Last week was a difficult fixture against a decent Mid Canterbury team who caused us problems and the boys had to dig in to find a way to win the game. We showed good character and resilience, qualities that will be crucial if we want to mount a serious challenge for the top spot.
One of the way we categorize our squad is the three E'S model which is something I experienced at Burnley FC, which sees players determined to be either Emerging (young players stepping up and making a name for themselves) , Experienced (lads who have been there , done it and add consistency and leadership to the team) and Established (players who have been at the club for a while know the club culture and are players the team are built around).
The key thing is to have the right balance, Emerging players bring energy and enthusiasm to the squad but have too many in the team at once you can become a naive and inconsistent team. Too many established players and it can become difficult to change culture or provide pathways to young players and things can become tired.
Ollie and I feel we have the right balance across the squad in each category and most importantly the players understand their roles, what they individually bring to the team and what is expected from them as a group. This is a tough league to compete in, pitch conditions can vary greatly from week to week and you have to be able to stand up to the pressure of getting results every week. We have put ourselves in a good position however now we have set the players a challenge, are we at our peak in terms of performances , will we win a few , lose a few and finish where we normally do each season? Or have we got another 2 or 3 gears we can hit, can we become even more ruthless, work even harder, be even more organized, fitter, sharper and ultimately can we beat the teams around us?
Round Two will see some more twists and turns no doubt but we are prepared for the challenge ahead which is Burwood away this Saturday, we know the pitch conditions won't be great but that doesn’t phase us, the mentality of the boys at the moment is we will go toe to toe with any team , be it on a turf, on a bog or on a carpark and all we are focused on is getting 3 points. And we absolutely love an away day so bring it on.
Thanks as always to our supporters who take the time to watch our games, it doesn’t go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated, and best of luck to all Waimak teams this weekend. Adam Keizer
