ACTINIC KERATOSES

TREATMENT OF ACTINIC KERATOSES

The basic types of treatment for Aks are cryosurgery, surgical removal biopsy, topical chemotherapy, and photodynamic therapy. Other surgical options that have been used include chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing.

Cryosurgery - liquid nitrogen “ freezes” surface skin, which flakes off and is replaced by new skin. Patients may experience a stinging or burning sensation. Although short-term skin redness is the chief side affect, flat white spots may occasionally occur. Cryosurgery is the most commonly used treatment.

Surgical removal and biopsy - since Aks may become squamous cell carcinomas, the dermatologist may need to biopsy the growth to make sure it is not cancerous.

Topical Chemotherapy - a topical anti-cancer cream or lotion (i.e. diclofenac, 5-fluorouracil, imiquimod) is applied to the skin to treat actinic keratoses. Patients may experience mild to severe skin irritation and discomfort. A localized red spot may remain at the site of a treated AK before it disappears.

Photodynamic therapy- a natural chemical is applied to the skin; after a few hours, the skin is exposed to light that activates the chemical to destroy the actinic keratoses. Localized red areas which fade after several days, develop in treated regions. There maybe some discomfort.

Chemical peeling, a chemical solution is applied to the skin. This causes the skin to peel over a period of days. As the treated skins peels, new skin forms to replace it. Your dermatologist or dermatologic surgeon will

select a chemical solution for a mild, medium, or deep peel. The principal side effect is redness, swelling, and crusting of skin for a period of time after the treatment. Some discomfort accompanies this procedure.

Laser skin resurfacing - a series of treatments with a laser removes surface skin to a desired depth. Post-treatment skin redness and some discomfort are the principal side effects. Time for healing is needed. Research and development of other treatments for actinic keratoses is an ongoing I process. Treatment should be fully and openly discussed with your dermatologist. After actinic keratoses are removed, the new skin must be protected from solar damage by a program, skin care that include the use of regular sunscreens and sun protection is advised.

Prevention of Actinic Keratoses

Prevention of Aks should begin early in flife. Sun damage to unprotected skin begins in childhood and puts the child at risk for actinic keratoses and skin cancer later in life. However, it is never too late to initiate prevention of new actinic keratoses lesions.

THE BASICS OF PREVENTIONS ARE:

• Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight during peak sunlight hours (10am to 4pm)

• Wear clothing that covers arms and legs, and wear a brimmed hat.

• Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher daily, and apply it at least 20 minutes prior to sun exposure for maximum sun protection.

• Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen that provides both UV A and UVB protection, and reapply sunscreen every 1.5 hours when outdoors, even on cloudy days.

* Large Marrow (Zucchini), cut into 5 mm slices

* Pizza sauce or tomato sauce

* Sliced or chopped black or green olives

* Finely chopped spring, red or regular onion

* Mozzarella or other white cheese

Place the zucchini slices on a greased baking sheet and top first with the sauce, then the olives, onion, and pepper, and finally with the cheese. Cook under the broiler for 3 to 5 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly. Serve hot.

Tackling the Guinness World Record-endorsed Comrades Marathon requires proper training, determination and commitment. In order to ensure that athletes are adequately prepared, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has just completed its nationwide roadshow tour to share running hints, tips and advice to runners across the country.

This year 5,656 novice athletes will attempt their maiden Comrades run. To this end, the Comrades Marathon novice-specific seminars will be hosted during March and April, with the first seminar scheduled for Gauteng in just over two week’s time.

Consisting of a series of educational, motivational and inspirational sessions, these Comrades Novice Seminars are aimed at helping the first-time Comrades athlete to prepare, both physical and mentally, to get in top form for race day.

A panel of experts in the fields of medicine, sport psychology, dietetics as well as the official Comrades Coach will provide invaluable advice, answer questions and support newbies in terms of complete preparation for the race.

Comrades Coach, Lindsey Parry says, “To help get you across the finish line before the 12-hour cut-off time, it is essential that you are prepared. It is important that you know what to expect of the route, that you have trained adequately in terms of time spent out on the road and fuelled the body correctly.”
