LUPUS AND THE SKIN

VASCULITIS occurs because of damage to the small red-purple spots or bumps on the lower legs. Occasionally, larger knots and ulcers can develop. Vasculitis may be hivelike or have small red or purple lines in the fingernails folds or on the tips of the fingers. This usually occurs in patients with active SLE.

HAIR LOSS (ALOPECIA) SLE patients who have been severely ill may develop temporary hair loss which is replaced by new hair growth. A severe flare of SLE can result in fragile hair that breaks easily. Broken hair at the edge of the scalp that has a ragged look is called "lupus hair." When OLE involves the scalp, it should be treated promptly because damage to the hair follicle can cause irreversible hair loss.

LIGHT SENSITIVITY (PHOTOSENSITIVITY)

photosensitivity is common in all forms of cutaneous LE. Both the sun burning rays (ultraviolet B light) as well as the tanning rays (ultraviolet A light) can aggravate the skin.

TREATMENT

Sunscreens are extremely important for people with LE. Prolonged periods of exposure to sunlight, especially between the hours of 10 am and 4pm, should be avoided, as well as tanning parlours and even bare fluorecent light bulbs.

In addition, wide-brimmed hats, tightly woven clothing, or sun protective clothing should be worn. A broad-spectrum sunscreen of block (SPF30) with protection against UVA and UVB rays should be reapplied every 2 hours. ACLE is treated with systemic drugs such as prednisone or in combination with other drugs that suppress the immune system. Discoid lesions and SCLE skin lesions can be treated with the application of corticosteroid creams, ointments, gels,tapes, and solutions. Individual lesions can be injected with a corticosteroid suspension.

Patients with more widespread LE skin lesions and stubborn lesions are treated with oral ant malarial drugs like hydoxychloroquine or in combination with aquamarine. Chloroquine may be used as a substitute for hydroxychloroquine.

Other oral drugs that are used include retinoid, prednisone, diaminodiphaenysulfone, gold, thalidomide, clofazimine, or immunosuppressive drugs like methotraxate, azathioprine, mycophenolate mofetil, or cyclosporine.

BENEFITS OF COLORING PAGES

Although this activity is seen as a kiddies past time, colouring pages has proven to be beneficial to both children and adults. We have a few points to consider colouring pages as an activity.

A great skill that one can learn from coloring pages is patience. With this skill, you can learn to relax, reduce stress and be comfortable during the creation of an piece of art.

Another important lesson that this art teaches is the ability to focus. According to many studies, kids and adults who use coloring pages have better focus skills.

Colouring pages also improves or exercises coordination skills. Aside from this, it helps reduce cognitive loss when it comes to advanced drawings.

* Fresh, good quality root vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots, turnips, beets, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts and fennel

* Several whole cloves of garlic

* Olive oil

* Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

* Sprigs of fresh rosemary and/or thyme (or herb of your choice)

You may wish to leave the peel on the potatoes and carrots. Peel the, beets, and sweet potatoes. and garlic cloves Cut the vegetables into large pieces of approximately the same size, so that they will all cook at the same rate. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet or in a baking pan and drizzle them with the olive oil and sprinkle with liberal amounts of salt and pepper. Toss the vegetables to coat them on all sides. If you use beets, place them in a separate container so as not to color the rest of the vegetables. Add the sprigs of fresh herbs and bake in a (180C) oven for 45 minutes to an hour, turning the vegetables occasionally, until they are fork-tender and lightly browned.

UPDATE ON CANCER PATIENT, MARINA CHANDA

Marina was admitted at Grey's Hospital, Pietermaritzburg, on the 12th of May for an operation whereby her tumor was removed.

The operation was a success and her treating Doctors where very impressed with her speedy recovery. On the 5th of June she had skin grafting done which also went very well.

She was finally discharged on the 9th of June and has this message to share.

With everyone's love and support, I have come so far and have been given another life. I would like to thank all the generous and kind-hearted people who have contributed to Back-a-Buddy cancer fund and The cars for cancer fundraiser.

I sincerely appreciate every contribution i received so for every cent, I received, has been used for my transportation and medicals. I am also so grateful for all the prayers and messages received from everybody.
