SEBORRHEIC KERATOSES TREATMENTS

with Dr R. Singh

HOW ARE THEY TREATED?

Creams, ointments, or other medication can neither cure nor prevent Seborrheic Keratoses. Most often Seborrheic Keratoses are removed by cryosurgery, curettage, or electro-surgery.

Cryosurgery, liquid nitrogen, a very cold liquid gas, is applied to the growth with a cotton swab or spray gun to "freeze" it. A blister may form under the growth which dries into a scab-like crust. The Keratosis usually falls off within a few weeks. Occasionally, there will be a small dark or light spot that usually fades over time.

Curettage. The Keratosis is scraped from the skin. An injection or spray is first used to numb the area before the growth is removed (curetted). No stitches are necessary, and the minimal bleeding can be controlled by applying pressure or the application of bloodclotting chemical.

Electro-surgery- the growth is anesthetized (numbed) and an electric current is used to burn the growth which is then scraped off.

WHAT ISN'T SEBORRHEIC KERATOSES

Although these growths are frequently confused with warts, moles, actinic Keratoses (considered the earliest stage in the development of a type of skin cancer), and malignant melanoma skin cancer, they differ in a variety of ways.

• Warts are caused by a virus; Seborrheic Keratoses are not. Warts tends to develop more quickly. They do not get as dark in colour, and they do not have a "pasted-on" appearance.

• Moles are skin-coloured or tan to brown in colour. Almost everyone develops 2030 moles during his or her lifetime· usually during childhood.

• Actinic Keratoses (solar Keratoses) are considered the earliest stage in the development of skin cancer which is limited to the outermost layer of skin. Since they are caused by the sun, they most commonly occur on body areas such as the face, hands, forearms, and the "V" of the neck which are exposed to sunlight. These growths are more common in pale-skinned, fairhaired, light-eyed individuals and are flatter, redder, scalier, and rougher than Seborrheic Keratoses. Any raised, reddish, roughtextured growth should be examined by a dermatologist.

• Melanomas are a serious form of skin cancer. They usually, but not always, are very dark brown to bluish-black growths. Melanomas may be confused with Seborrheic Keratoses because both can become very dark and irregular. Any growth that turns dark, bleeds, itches, or becomes irritated should be checked by a dermatologist since early detection of skin cancer is the best way to assure successful treatment.

GREY’S HOSPITAL CELEBRATED NURSES DAY

Grey’s Hospital celebrated Nurses Day on the 12 May 2023 in style. The event was termed, Nurses Day of Prayer. The Grey’s Hospital Professionalism and Ethics Committee decided to show appreciation for our nurses in same, but broader scale than in 2022.

The day was opened with prayer by RN K Francis. All who present were welcomed and acknowledged by Mrs Z Mvelase on behalf of Nursing Management and the Professional and Ethics Committee.

Mr FS Matibela, Grey’s Hospital Nurse Manager took to the podium and opened with a real throwback of the origins of the modern day nursing, walking in the footsteps of Ms Florence Nightingale who gave up her wealth and comfort in order to serve humanity. He thereafter gave the profound message which was in line with honouring of nursing as the noble profession.

Father T Nash, our guest of honour took over and proclaimed the blessing by anointing the hands that nurture with love, tender care and understanding in order to make a difference in the lives of our patients.

The event then proceeded to the Memorial garden where reciting of the Nurses Pledge took place as a reminder of who the nurses are and what they stand for. It was followed by a spectacular act of the releasing of the balloons, in commemoration of our heroes and heroines who had been with us, but have passed on. Thereafter Father Nash closed in prayer.

After the event Mr FS Matibela shared the video recording of the words of support by Dr MT Gumede, Grey’s Hospital Acting CEO, where he poured his heartfelt appreciation for our nurses and thanked them for all their efforts in ensuring that our patients receive the best healthcare service that they deserve. His speech was an honour to the nursing fraternity.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF WALKING

Walking is probably the safest, natural form of exercise you can do to improve overall health. To walk most effectively, if you want to lose weight, is to alternate between intervals of slow, moderate and fast speeds during your walking session. That gives you a good cardio workout and will keep your body burning calories long after you are done walking. This walking technique is called Power Walking. Don't forget about warming up if your walk is to contain strenuous paces to prevent injury.

Walking also improves you in the following ways;

* Increases your energy level and mobility.

* Decreases your stress level.

* Is a great way to lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol.

* Is a low impact exercise.

* Helps prevent obesity, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

* Helps you lose weight.

* Walking gets your blood flowing and makes you want to exercise more.

You may wonder about the amount of calories burnt while walking?

The short answer is that a person burns between 80 and 100 calories per mile walked, depending on the terrain and the pace.

COMRADES WELCOMES GEMS AS NEW MEDICAL AID SPONSOR

With its tagline ‘Working Towards a Healthier You’, one of South Africa’s largest medical aid providers, the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS), has come on board as an official sponsor to The Ultimate Human Race. Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) Chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo made the announcement at a launch in Johannesburg earlier today (Thursday, 25 May 2023).

Ngcobo said, “We are proud to announce that the country’s largest restricted membership medical scheme, with over 800,000 principal members and more than 2-million beneficiaries has come on board to partner with The Ultimate Human Race.”

GEMS was created specifically to provide healthcare cover for public service employees, with a mandate to ensure that there is adequate provision of healthcare coverage to public service employees that is efficient, cost-effective, and equitable; and to provide further options for those who wish to purchase more extensive cover.

In addition to their contribution to race as the official medical aid partner, part of GEMS’ sponsorship will cover the Comrades Underprivileged Runners Programme which accommodates and feeds up to 800 needy athletes over Comrades weekend.

The medical aid Scheme will also assume the naming rights of this year’s Spirit of Comrades Awards, which awards a one-ounce pure gold medal to each of its three deserving recipients who showcase the noble attributes associated with the Comrades Marathon. "GEMS is honoured and excited to partner with the

committed to what Comrades means for so many South Africans – tenacity, perseverance and seeing it to the end. We celebrate all who have participated," says Dr Phumelela Dhlomo, Chief Marketing Officer of GEMS.

"Our participation and investment in the Comrades Marathon demonstrates our level of commitment to contributing to major events in our country. Furthermore, we believe that the ultramarathon with its huge national and international footprint and associated tourism are crucial in positioning KwaZuluNatal and South Africa as a sporting, tourism and wellness destination,” adds Dhlomo.

Seven GEMS employees will be running this year’s Comrades Marathon in addition to over 600 GEMS members.

Ngcobo has welcomed GEMS as a new CMA sponsor, saying, “It is with a huge sense of excitement that we conclude this sponsorship agreement with GEMS and welcome them to the Comrades Marathon family.” He adds, “We are delighted to be working with the GEMS team and look forward to the passion, positivity and value they bring to the relationship. The CMA is immensely pleased to be associated with this respected South African brand.”

The 96th Comrades Marathon will be the 48th Down Run on Sunday, 11 June 2023
