ACTINIC KERATOSES
WHAT ARE ACTINIC KERATOSES?
Actinic keratoses (Aks) are considered the earliest stage in the development of skin cancer. They are common growths of the epidermis (outermost layer of the skin), and are caused by long-term exposure to sunlight as far as back as childhood. Aks are most likely to appear after the age 40, however, in geographic areas with yearround, high-intensity sunlight, Aks may be found in persons as young as the teens and twenties. Half of all older, fair-skinned persons who live in hot, sunny areas have Aks.
Chronic sun exposure causes skin cells to change size, shape and the way they are organized. The skin cells affected in Aks are the keratinocyted. Keratinocyted are the tough-walled cells that make up 90% of the epidermis and give skin its texture. Aks are caused by changed in keratinocytes and the skin becomes rough, scaly, or mottled; and occasionally, the skin may develop bumps or small horn-like growths. Further changes in cell growth can turn Aks into squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer.
WITH DR R. SINGHHe is available for a consultation at his, Scottsville branch in Pietermaritzburg or at his Durban branch.
WHAT DO ACTINIC KERATOSES LOOK LIKE?
Aks are found on chronically sun-exposed skin, most commonly on fair-skinned person, middle-aged or older. They can be found on the face, sides of the forehead, ears, the scalp of bald men, and the backs of hands. The typical AK is a dry, scaly, rough textured, skin-coloured to reddish-brown patch, or slightly elevated “bump’’. An AK may range from the size of a pinhead to larger than a quarter. Skin-coloured Aks may be easier to feel than to see and may be noticed more by touch because they have a sharp, hard scale and feel like sandpaper. They are often sensitive or “ touchy”. Wrinkling, furrowing, and other signs of sun damage may be present with an AK. An AK at any location may seem to disappear at times for weeks or months, and return at the same place. If they are picked off, they grow back. If an AK undergoes rapid upward growth, it may become a “cutaneous horn” which gets its name from its appearance, as it can look like the horn of an animal. The size of a horn may vary from a pinhead to a pencil head eraser, and its shape may be straight or curved. The ear is a common site for a cutaneous horn. Sometimes, a skin cancer can hide below a cutaneous horn. An AK can also appear as a diffuse, scaling lesion on the lower lip that dries and cracks open. Aries
Plans, obligations, and concerns regarding your social life, friendships, or happiness goals may have heavy energy hanging over them now during the shift. Still, things not only even out but begin to feel less pressured going forward.
Taurus
The coming months are excellent for reworking career and planning initiatives, educational pursuits, doing the research and legwork, and refining projects, dear Taurus. Pluto begins its yearly retrograde cycle today, and some of your long-term career goals may be up for review until June.
Gemini
It’s an excellent period for backing off a situation just a little so you can gain perspective and see where you’ve been too attached, controlling, or tense. . You could reflect more on your personal belief systems or general outlook regarding your future while Pluto is retrograde in your spirit sector until June 11th.
Cancer
You benefit from a review or reassessment of debts, dependencies, partnerships, and intimate relationships. If the give-and-take or trust in a key relationship has fallen out of balance, you’ll feel it more intensely now.
Leo
There is a tendency to cling to old patterns or examine the past instead of braving new territory. Aim to detach yourself at least somewhat from matters to gain a clearer, more objective perspective. This process helps you identify areas where you’ve been pushing too hard or where you’ve been too attached for your own good.
Virgo
As you grow accustomed to the energy, shift you’re in a brilliant position to review and reassess matters as you gain perspective. You might more clearly see where you’ve been over-attached or where you’ve put too much pressure on yourself along these lines.
Libra
Pressures will subside going forward, and in fact, you’ll get to the point where you’re significantly detached enough to gain a better perspective on these things. This way, you can more clearly see where fear and over-attachment may have worked against you.
Scorpio
This cycle positions you well to review, reassess, and gain a new perspective about areas of your chart strongly influenced by Pluto: your personal goals, security, comfort, family, communications, transportation, connecting, and home or domestic life.
Sagittarius
Looking to the past is a necessary process to help you see what things in your life need to change. It’s also a time to take a break from pushing yourself too hard mentally. Some projects may stall or need editing, adjustments, and refinements.
Capricorn
With less pressure on you to control or micromanage your practical affairs, your choices and decisions improve. Even so, it’s important not to push matters that need to evolve in their own due time.
Aquarius
You’re in a fine position to review and reassess your approach to self-starts, new beginnings, career matters, and responsibilities. If you’ve been over-controlling, you recognize this now and want to take some of the pressure off.
Pisces
With the shift happening now, you might experience some intensifying fears, worries, or frustrations. However, these things should settle down shortly. You may not have noticed how concerns, guilt, and control issues have worked against you.
