ACTINIC KERATOSES

WHAT ARE ACTINIC KERATOSES?

Actinic keratoses (Aks) are considered the earliest stage in the development of skin cancer. They are common growths of the epidermis (outermost layer of the skin), and are caused by long-term exposure to sunlight as far as back as childhood. Aks are most likely to appear after the age 40, however, in geographic areas with yearround, high-intensity sunlight, Aks may be found in persons as young as the teens and twenties. Half of all older, fair-skinned persons who live in hot, sunny areas have Aks.

Chronic sun exposure causes skin cells to change size, shape and the way they are organized. The skin cells affected in Aks are the keratinocyted. Keratinocyted are the tough-walled cells that make up 90% of the epidermis and give skin its texture. Aks are caused by changed in keratinocytes and the skin becomes rough, scaly, or mottled; and occasionally, the skin may develop bumps or small horn-like growths. Further changes in cell growth can turn Aks into squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer.

He is available for a consultation at his, Scottsville branch in Pietermaritzburg or at his Durban branch.

WHAT DO ACTINIC KERATOSES LOOK LIKE?

Aks are found on chronically sun-exposed skin, most commonly on fair-skinned person, middle-aged or older. They can be found on the face, sides of the forehead, ears, the scalp of bald men, and the backs of hands. The typical AK is a dry, scaly, rough textured, skin-coloured to reddish-brown patch, or slightly elevated “bump’’. An AK may range from the size of a pinhead to larger than a quarter. Skin-coloured Aks may be easier to feel than to see and may be noticed more by touch because they have a sharp, hard scale and feel like sandpaper. They are often sensitive or “ touchy”. Wrinkling, furrowing, and other signs of sun damage may be present with an AK. An AK at any location may seem to disappear at times for weeks or months, and return at the same place. If they are picked off, they grow back. If an AK undergoes rapid upward growth, it may become a “cutaneous horn” which gets its name from its appearance, as it can look like the horn of an animal. The size of a horn may vary from a pinhead to a pencil head eraser, and its shape may be straight or curved. The ear is a common site for a cutaneous horn. Sometimes, a skin cancer can hide below a cutaneous horn. An AK can also appear as a diffuse, scaling lesion on the lower lip that dries and cracks open. Focus on Autism

Autism is a brain disorder which is still being researched and understood today. There are lots of theories, and a lot of debate about the reasons for autism, and much of it is involved in the controversy surrounding exactly how common autism is, and whether or not there's been a noticeable rise in actual cases of Autism in recent times.

For mothers and fathers, one of the most crucial pieces of information is that autism is not a psychological illness. Specialists quite specifically dismissed the worrying theory that

Autism is brought on by the absence of a nurturing mother, but the belief still exists in some circles. If your child suffers from Autism, don't worry, it is not due to the fact that you were a inadequate parent. Many parents don't even truly understand what the signs of it are.

Rather than finding answers, solutions or comfort through your own research, we suggest seeking out professional advise and treatment. You can always revert back to the relevant treating practitioner, this way.

COMRADES MARATHON MEDIA ACCREDITATION APPLICATIONS CLOSE IN 2 WEEKS This Is It - Ziyasha

Demand for Comrades Marathon media accreditation has increased to the extent that it has become increasingly necessary to limit access to these facilities. We sincerely regret that we have no option but to apply strict limitations on the number of accredited journalists. Priority will be given on the basis of national circulation figures, i.e. major circulation daily newspapers, photographic agencies, digital media, radio stations and CMA official photographers.

Media Accreditation will be much more stringently allocated than in the past, and under no circumstances will we process applications for Media Accreditation during the week prior to the race.

Note that we will be strictly limiting the number of accredited journalists from any one respective organisation.

ACCREDITATION

Race Day Accreditation and allocation of access to facilities will be issued solely at the discretion of the Comrades Marathon Association. The CMA reserves the right to make all race day media facilities and area assignments.

MEDIA ACCREDITATION APPLICATIONS

The Media Accreditation Application is available at www. comrades.com and must include a digital photo. Applications close on Wednesday, 17 May 2023.

COLLECTION OF MEDIA ACCREDITATIONS

Media Accreditation must be collected from the Media Centre, Comrades Expo, Durban Exhibition Centre (DEC), Mezzanine Floor, 11 Walnut Road, Durban, during the following days between 10am and 5pm:

Thursday, 8 June 2023; Friday, 9 June 2023 and Saturday 10 June 2023.

Note - The Media Centre will be closed for the duration of any Official Media Conferences. Date(s) and Time(s) of the official media conferences will be advised and posted at the Media Centre.

NB - MEDIA ACCREDITATION WILL NOT BE POSTED, NOR WILL IT BE ISSUED ON RACE DAY.

NO NEW APPLICATIONS WILL BE PROCESSED AT EXPO.

TYPES OF ACCREDITATION AVAILABLE

1. General Media Accreditation will provide access to the following facilities:Media Centre Facilities at the Comrades Expo from 8 to 10 June 2023.

Any special Media Conferences scheduled by the CMA which might be held in Durban during 8 to 11 June 2023 (dates and times to be advised).

Post-race interviews with gold medallists and others.

NO ROUTE ACCESS STICKERS WILL BE ISSUED TO INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA. However, we urge members of the media to make use of the facilities we will be providing at the Comrades Finish Venue from 7am to 6pm from which the progress of the race can be viewed live on television monitors with regular supplementary information updates provided during the course of the day.

2. Media Truck Access is extremely limited and will be made available at the sole discretion of the CMA. Two Media Trucks will once again be provided for the exclusive use of selected radio and print journalists. Seating will be limited to a maximum of 34 persons and it may therefore be necessary to allow only one representative per organisation, with national circulation figures dictating precedence. Any request for Media Truck Access must be indicated clearly on the Media Accreditation application.

3. Only photographers allocated with Finish Line Accreditation will be permitted inside the Finish Area. Again we stress that this will be very strictly allocated at the sole discretion of the CMA, to mainstream media photographers only. It will also be limited per organisation, with only one photographer from any one organisation permitted inside the Finish Area at any one time. Any request for Finish Line Access must be indicated on the Media Accreditation application; but will not necessarily be allocated.

4. Media Bike Accreditation - A very limited number of motorbikes with drivers will be made available on a strictly allocated basis. Any request for motorbike and driver must be indicated on the Media Accreditation application; but will not necessarily be allocated.

MEDIA FACILITIES AT THE FINISH

Media Facilities at the Finish Venue at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium at 2 Kingsmead Way, Durban, will be available from 7am to 6pm and will provide the following:

- Telephone lines and fax facilities

- Sports Splits Event Management race and runner information

- Television monitors

- Race results and bulletins made available in hard copy throughout the day

- Tea, coffee and liquid refreshments throughout the day

- Refreshments and lunch at scheduled intervals

- Wifi

There will be no access to runners on the Finish Line. Gold Medallists and others will however be brought to the Media Interviewing Facility for a Media Conference on Race Day.

CMA personnel will be on hand to assist Members of the Media. Delaine Cools will be in charge of managing the Media Facilities. The Chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo; the Vice Chairperson, Les Burnard and the Race Director, Rowyn James are the official spokespersons for the Comrades Marathon Association.

MEDIA FACILITIES AVAILABLE DURING EXPO

Date(s) and time(s) of any Pre-Race Media Conference(s) will be advised in due course.

Facilities will be available at the Media Centre, Comrades Expo, Durban Exhibition Centre (DEC), Mezzanine Floor, 11 Walnut Road, Durban from Thursday, 8 June to Saturday, 10 June 2023 including telephones, wifi and information.

For further information please contact Delaine Cools at +27(0)33 897 8650 or email delaine@comrades.com

For a full and detailed horoscope for 2023, email punditroshan@telkomsa.net

Aries

Today is a day for embracing change and accepting that unpredictability can sometimes bring exciting new possibilities into your life. Your thinking is progressive and enterprising, and you’re exploring your unique qualities and talents.

Taurus

You’re intolerant of limitations and restrictions today as you try to break free from the things holding you back from growing. You can be excitable and perhaps a little impatient, particularly with rules or impositions. While you can feel rebellious now, you put yourself in the best position if you answer to a genuine need to make progress rather than merely react to what others are doing.

Gemini

There can be coincidences or impromptu connections that change your focus. Things can happen that feel predestined, out of the blue, or uncanny. Minor disruptions can have the effect of distancing you from self-limiting secrets or situations, ultimately giving you more freedom.

Cancer

You might broaden your horizons through networking, or there can be a rejuvenation in a relationship. You might explore new labels or connect with different people. Some upsets or disruptions are possible, too, as Uranus tends to help you detach from areas where you’ve been too attached for your own good.

Leo

You might crave a fresh start or increased freedom, whether personally or professionally. There may be some incentives or benefits for your accomplishments. Minor disruptions or unexpected changes this week can lead you in new directions later

Virgo

Your worldview is changing, and events that occur now can be catalysts for exploring new ideas. In truth, your extracurricular activities are evolving. Educational plans might shift, or a sudden opportunity for different experiences can emerge.

Libra

You can experience a deep eagerness to make profound and long-lasting changes in your personality or lifestyle now. Alternatively, suppose you’re not in touch with this need for change.

Scorpio

Someone might bring surprises into your life, or you may get in sudden touch with your relationship needs, whether they’re new or revised. It’s not easy to accept rules and limitations today. Instead, you could meet this rebellious energy through a partner or special friend.

Sagittarius

Dear Sagittarius, it’s a time that brings new energy for work, chores, daily routines, and wellness efforts. Increasingly, you require a fresh or different approach to how you handle routines and manage your health. Changes in plans today can lead you on the path to the discovery of new methods to improve essential systems in your life.

Capricorn

You stand out for your unique creations or personality, or a need awakens to express yourself in unique ways. Signs point to the need for you to detach yourself a little from areas of over-control or those things that deplete your energy stores.

Aquarius

The desire to grow, improve, and change can be intense today, or changes come your way, and adjustments are necessary. It’s possible that you need disruptions to routines for your life to move forward.

Pisces

Your ideas, advice, or guidance might stand out as particularly unique and perhaps in demand as the Sun and Uranus align in your communications sector. Something can inspire you to branch out with your interests or studies as you awaken to a new way of thinking and expressing yourself.

COMMUNITY CHEST LAUNCHES THE CHARITABLE WORKERS' CLUB

Centre - First draw winner (Rosalind Govender –Ben Booysen Airconditionng Refrigeration (Pty) Ltd) walked away with a handsome R1000 shopping voucher). (right) Second draw winner (Simphiwe Mahlaba – Msunduzi Municipality – Roads Department) went home smiling with a R750 shopping voucher) and (left) third draw prize winner Colin Love – Woodrite went away feeling blessed with his surprise windfall of a R500 shopping voucher.

There were hearty congratulations all around as the winners of the Community Chest’s Charitable Workers’ Club (CWC) collected their Lucky Draw Prizes. Hats-off to Liberty Midlands Mall for collaborating with Community Chest to make these generous prizes possible.

Workplace Giving is a charitable mechanism through which employees at various businesses/ factories donate on a weekly or monthly basis to the Community Chest via their payroll system or by debit order authorisation. Workplace Giving has been going on for many, many years. However, until now, the Community Chest had very little opportunity to express our appreciation to these loyal supporters in little (and big) ways.

The CWC (Charitable Workers' Club) is based on our existing Workplace Giving Programme. The launch of the CWC Club has provided Community Chest an appropriate mechanism by which we can communicate better with our employee/staff donors as well as appreciate them with tokens, as and when the opportunity allows.

Existing contributors who donate at least R5 a week or R20 a month, joined, at no additional cost, by simply completing the Membership Form. All signed up members were entered into this Lucky Draw competition. The draw took place on Tuesday 2nd May 2023 at 1pm and the 3 winners were informed telephonically.

Are you a workplace donor to the Community Chest but not yet signed up as a CWC member? Do so immediately to qualify for entry into the next CWC Lucky Draw Competition. If your company/ business/factory is not yet participating in charitable giving, contact Sma Sokhela on 033 394 1031 or sma@communitychest.org.za to learn how you too can become a charitable donor, with some lucky benefits.

Remember, whether you win in our Lucky Draw competition or not, every person in our community who is in need of a helping hand up is the real winner!

“Don’t try to live for ever – You can’t! But you can do things that will live forever!”
