Knowledge and Wisdom ~ Irshad Soofi

A beautiful example of a humble Alim is related by Mohammed ibn Hajj al-Abdari al-Fasi from Morocco the author of Madkhal Ash-Shara AshShareef Ala Al-Madahib (Introduction to Islamic Jurisprudence According to Schools of Thought) who relates the incident when he went to his teacher Shaykh As-Salih ‘Abdullah Ibn S‘ad a.k.a. Ibn Abi Jamrah, one of the greatest scholars of hadith from al-Andalus who wrote the famous book Bahjat al-Nufus (Joy of The Souls), a commentary of Sahih Bukhari. He says that when I went to him and said: I want to learn from you O Shaykh!

He replied: We are both students and Allah is the Teacher; so if you want to sit with me, then welcome. That is humility. That inspires love in the student. The great Imams students differed with them and yet they never denied their teacher. Imam al-Shafi’i (150 AH- 204 AH) was the student of Imam Maalik (93 AH – 179 A.H. ) and yet Imam Shafei said: I am just a boy from the use of Maalik That did not stop him from going against his teacher’s judgments and opinions and formulating his own Madhab.

Devatā (Celestial gods) & The Bhagavad Gita

Jyotishacharya Shastri Pundit Roshan Singh

These are beings that live in the higher planes of existence within this material world, called Swarg (the celestial abodes). These celestial beings (devatās) are not God. They are souls like us. They occupy specific positions in the system of God’s administration and oversee specific aspects of the material world. Consider the Federal government of a country. There is a Secretary of State, a Finance Secretary, a Secretary of Commerce, an Agriculture Secretary, and so on. These are positions, and select people occupy these positions for a limited tenure. At the end of its tenure, the government changes, all the post-holders change too. The positions remain but the persons holding those positions change. Similarly, in the governance of the affairs of the world, there are positions such as Agni Dev (the god of fire), Vāyu Dev (the god of the wind), Varuṇ Dev (the god of the ocean), Indra Dev (the king of the celestial gods), etc. Souls selected by virtue of their deeds in past lives occupy these seats for a certain amount of time. Then they fall from their position and others occupy these seat. Thus, souls become celestial gods only temporarily and, as a result, we cannot compare them to the Supreme Lord. Many people worship the celestial gods for material rewards. However, we must remember that these Devatās cannot grant either liberation from material bondage or God-realization. Even if they do bestow material benefits, it is only by the powers they have received from God. Hence, the Bhagavad Gita repeatedly discourages people from worshipping the celestial gods and states that those who are situated in knowledge worship the Supreme Lord.

PROMOTING PEACE, RECONCILIATION, SOCIAL COHESION AND NON-VIOLENCE

365 DAYS OF NO TO GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE - ESSAY By: Trishan Naidoo, Grade 8, Raisethorpe High School

Despite the various campaigns and organisations that are waging a war against gender-based violence it continues to spread like a plague destroying the lives of women, men and children. It can be likened to a virus that starts in one family at one time and then spreads from family to family and generation to generation. Why, You ask? In my opinion it is because it is not easily recognisable. It comes disguised as traditions, rituals and cultural lifestyles. How often do we hear mother’s say “She shouldn’t talk like that, her husband does so much for her” or “How can a man allow a woman to talk to him like that?” Is he not man enough to stand up to her? There solution to eradicating genderbased violence lies in changing the mindsets of our mothers and fathers. With the evolution of gender roles in society, our parents and guardians should be instilling a greater sense of financial independence, confidence and will power in their daughters and teaching their sons to be gentlemen,

to carry themselves with dignity and self respect and to afford that respect to others as well. Mothers constantly expect their daughters to clean up after their brothers and fathers. The males in households get so accustomed to this privilegethat they expect the same from their wives. It is this mentality that results in domestic violence, sexual abuse and psychological trauma in many homes. In the words of Frederick Douglas

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken adults”. Gender-based violence starts and ends in our homes. Stop accepting degradation in any form from our sons and daughters. Start instilling compassion, empathy, respect and above all confidence in our children that can be passed on to the next generation and put an end to Gender-based violence NOE.

SPIRITUAL

TRANSFORMATION by Pastor Mike Gobel

Associate Pastor of ‘The Campus Church’

YOU ARE LOVED, DISPITE YOUR HUMAN WEAKNESSES INTRODUCTION The Bible teaches us that “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16 (NIV) My dear friend, I can spend days and nights speaking and writing to you about Pastor Mike Gobel religious doctrines, theology Associate Pastor of and biblical truths but none ‘The Campus Church’ PMB of this is going to make a CEO - Planting Hope difference to your life if you Foundation NPC are not willing to accept the Truth. Stop and look around you, what do you see? Let me tell you what I see; I see a world that is lost to its own selfish desires. I see a world that is physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually dying by its own hand because it has turned its back on God. The world is seeking answers but the problem is that—even if I were to place the absolute, divine revelation of God to our very existence in-front of the world, you would call that a lie. It would be so true and so pure that you would doubt its very origin. So how can we truly find those elusive answers we seek when we are not willing to listen to Truth. When Truth is revealed, we believe that such truth has a hidden agenda or its come to trick us in believing that there must surely be more to such truth that the ‘eye’ can see. But the ‘real’ Truth is that there is nothing more than the absolute Truth of God Word. There is nothing more to seek than what is already been found. There is nothing more than knowing that ‘we’ are purely human and as humans we are weak in the flesh, we are vulnerable in our thoughts and sinful in our actions. That is the real Truth but we simply don’t want to accept this as truth because it will require of us to seek a ‘Helper’ and ‘Comforter’ and a ‘Guide’ to lead us on the path of righteousness. We cannot achieve the things we want or need without the ‘Divine’ intervention of God. Stop wanting to believe that— as humans, we are capable of doing it ‘alone’ because we are not. We are not able to separate the Creator from His creation. The two operate and function as ONE but in order for the one to survive it needs to be attached to the life

blood of the other—like a baby that is attached by an umbilical cord to its mother, we need to be attached to our Heavenly Father through the saving grace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. You see friend, there is nothing we can do in this life to cause that ‘umbilical cord’ to stay attached to the Father, accept by the divine intervention of Christ. He is the life blood, the fibre, the marrow that binds to two into ONE. He is that umbilical cord that gives life to a lifeless body and that sustains us from birth into eternal life with Him. God is LOVE, He is not a by-product of LOVE, HE IS LOVE!! We are His creation and made in His image out of that love and for the soul purpose to love both Him and our fellow creation (love your neighbour as yourself). The world doesn't want to understand that or accept it. How do you separate the love of God from the creation that was born out of that love? You simply cannot. You cannot divide something that has no beginning or end. It is complete within itself. I want you to know that, despite of your failures, weaknesses, shortcomings and rebelliousness, God loves you. He loves you enough to give His Son for you; to watch His Son die for you and to put the sins of this world on His back for you. That is His ‘unconditional love.’ You might not want to believe it or you might be too afraid to accept it because if you do it will make you vulnerable. But that is precisely what God wants of you. He wants you to be vulnerable, He wants you to see your strength in Him and not in yourself. The greatest lie that the world has tried to indoctrinate us with is the lie that we are strong enough within ourselves when we are not. We are weak, poor, empty, lonely, we are vulnerable and we are nothing without God. Some days you may feel undeserving, blemished and bruised. God does not see you that way. He sees your vulnerability and the sins you carry yet He offers His unconditional forgiveness, mercy and grace. He sees you as His son or daughter. He sees you as His creation and there is nothing you can do to remove that beautiful image from His mind. On your darkest days, remember that He is with you. Remember that He loves you. Remember that He will never forsake you nor will He leave you. His Son died for you, and all you need to do is repent and believe in Jesus and the forgiveness of your sins through Him. Then believe you are cleansed and renewed and start again in His Name.

WORLD POPULATION DAY World Population Day started on 11 July 1989, in the hope of raising awareness about the world’s population issues. The earth reached 7 billion people in 2011, a significant rise from 2.5 billion in the year 1950. There is without a doubt definitely a problem with over population of the planet. The earth is suffering. Global warming, rapid soil erosion, deforestation, endangered species, pollution and poaching are just a few of the many issues that the planet faces today. Over population undoubtedly contributes to these issues, for example the more people there are on the planet the more chances there are of the planet running out of natural resources and there will definitely be increases in pollution as well. Over population leads to poverty, which is why there are many poverty stricken countries in the world today, simply because their countries cannot afford to provide employment for every one of its inhabitants. This creates a ripple effect of problems to come such as lack of youth empowerment, because there would be no opportunities for growth and change of the future generations. In order for future generations to take their place in society. There needs to be a society existing, meaning job opportunities, soil, forestry, an earth filled with all types of animals and species, like it was created to be initially etc. These as mentioned are just a few of the issues the earth is facing today

and will result in many more issues to come. Do your part in encouraging and educating youth about contraceptives, family planning and about how the earth is already under so much pressure and does not really need to have more people on it especially if people are not been educated in the right manner on how to live and treat this earth. Every time a child is born and not educated about living the correct way by making use of the earth’s natural resources responsibly, not littering, not polluting or causing harm to animals, it is just simply a waste of space on the earth because as it stands, the more people there are, the more problems we have, so the more uneducated or oblivious people are to what is happening to our precious earth the faster the earth will be destroyed. Food for thought, is it really worth it to raise a child in a world with so many problems? Also what can we do in our capacity to make a change? Teach our children how to be responsible and to look after our earth at a very early age. Stop littering, be responsible with water, plants and other resources, limit usage whenever and wherever we can. Do not harm animals, report anyone who you know may be poaching, illegally dumping, or causing any harm to the environment in your areas. Just remember to love this earth, because if you really do love it then you will take care of it, after all it is still our home.

WEEKLY HOROSCOPE

7 JULY – 13 JULY 2022 Spreading the Light of the Vedas Dr Roshan Singh

For a full and detailed horoscope for 2022, email punditroshan@telkomsa.net

Aries The Moon spends the day in your partnership sector, dear Aries, stirring a strong awareness of your relationships and need for companionship. It’s a good day for streamlining tasks. Later today, you might wrestle with insecurities or wonder whether to go your own way versus maintaining the status quo.Try not to take on too many problems that are not your own if you find people around you are a little cranky. You’ll quickly recognize the need for a mission today, even if it’s modest. Taurus The path to fulfillment seems to be taking care of the practical aspects and details of your life today, dear Taurus, and it can be rewarding to seek ways to simplify your life and narrow your focus. It’s easier than usual to identify practical priorities. As the day advances, you could have some feelings of being overlooked or otherwise in the background. It doesn’t feel straightforward to make big decisions. Gemini The Moon spends the day in your playful, expressive solar fifth house, dear Gemini, making it a good time for creating and enjoying favorite pastimes. Even so, some formality can be present in your relationships, and you can find that you’re sufficiently detached to talk about goals, commitments, and rules. This can actually strengthen your connections with others in the long term. As the day advances, it’s not a time for pushing your agenda. Transits might stir insecurities related to a friend, group, or finances. Cancer The Moon spends the day in your family and home sector, dear Cancer, stirring a need for familiarity and comfort. Friends may demand more of your attention or possibly support today, but you may prefer to be in the company of those closest to you just for now. You may be told a secret or asked to keep someone’s confidence. As the day advances, it may not be the best time for big decisions, but you’re in good shape for making valuable connections and learning from vulnerability. Leo The Moon spends the day in your communications sector, dear Leo, stirring a desire to learn, connect, and mingle. It’s a great time to put out feelers and pick up assorted information tidbits that are useful or fun. However, don’t let insecurities cause you to shy away from things you love. As the day advances, there can be minor disappointments or unresolved problems from the past emerging for your attention. You could be struggling with your faith in a belief, idea, direction, or relationship. Some analysis can be useful, but only to a certain extent, after which it’s overthinking. Virgo The Moon spends the day in your resources sector, dear Virgo, and settling down or settling in can be a goal. It’s a good time to research business opportunities. It’s a stronger day for independent activities than for teamwork, even though you are perfectly equipped to work with others. You enjoy the feeling of inner power and self-reliance that this provides. As the day advances, self-doubts might undermine your decisions and interactions, particularly if you work on auto-pilot. Still, a temporary lack of confidence might help you out. For example, you might choose to use the time wisely to get in better touch with yourself and your needs. For an in depth Astrological report, owner and founder of Astroworld, Dr Roshan Singh can be contacted on Cell: 071 630 0834 | E-mail: punditroshans@gmail.com

Libra The Moon spends the day in your sign, dear Libra, reinforcing your sensitivity and courage. With this transit, you have a stronger sense of self, but you’re also a little more vulnerable. You may be dealing with a bit of guilt about things you aren’t accomplishing, however. It’s a good time for following some emotional whims in moderation, but watch for impatience. As the day advances, you might deal with some insecurities related to your performance, meeting responsibilities, or close relationships due to an upcoming Sun-Chiron square. Scorpio There can be an introspective flavor to the day, dear Scorpio. It’s not the best time for being heard and understood clearly. In fact, at times, you might feel overlooked. However, it’s a strong time to gather yourself, find your center, and catch up on rest or quiet. As the day advances, it may be all too easy for others to touch upon your sore spots, although the result may be that you take necessary actions to firm up a vulnerable area of your life. Sagittarius The Moon spends the day in your solar eleventh house, dear Sagittarius, stirring a desire or need to seek out the camaraderie of friends. Instead, this transit can encourage you to connect with your dreams or happiness goals. As the day advances, some minor discomfort may be necessary for you to get over a hump. The Sun in your intimacy sector is heading toward a clash with Chiron, and the general temptation is to go along with whatever we feel makes others happy or appeases them. However, this can only lead to problems down the road. Capricorn With today’s Moon, having a mission or goal, even if it’s a simple one, is most likely to improve your mood, dear Capricorn. You can enjoy drawing up long-term plans and strategies. As the day advances, however, a SunChiron square influences you, and problems in the home or with family are best sorted out openly and honestly. The temptation may be to use a bandaid approach, but it’s best to look deeper and work on the root of issues. A partner may seem to be pushing your buttons. Aquarius The Moon spends the day in your sector of spirit, dear Aquarius, which can be uplifting. Pulling yourself out of everyday life’s duller details to work on freshening your mind can be most worthwhile now. With a Sun-Chiron square influencing the later part of the day, it’s best to watch for appeasing someone to keep the peace. This transit can point to hypersensitivity, and there may be poor timing with conversations or scheduling matters. It’s probably better to be politely honest instead of taking the roundabout or avoidant route. Pisces The Moon spends the day in your intimacy sector, dear Pisces, stirring up deeper feelings and a desire to learn more about your needs. Aim to get in touch with your own inner power. As the day advances, a Sun-Chiron square comes into influence, perhaps pulling up insecurities and soft spots. Certainly, sensitivity now can interfere with healthy, growth-oriented interactions, but exploring why can be helpful. Mixed signals with friends and lovers are possible. You may be entertaining the idea of taking a risk, but part of you would rather not rock the boat.
