Knowledge and Wisdom ~ Irshad Soofi

There’s a poem by Robert Frost: They say the truth will make you free, my truth will make you slave to me. So you just have to be careful, there’s a lot of manipulation out there. People from Indo/Pak subcontinent know very well about the peer sahibs, and what happens there. A lot of these people are flat-out fakes, there are pretenders all over West Africa, you know ‘Sufi Shaykh, come and be a murid.’ The danger of Sufism that bothers me is there are a lot of principles in Tasawwuf that are very easily manipulated into certain cultic control mechanisms and they become very dangerous.

I think for those of us in the West, we come from a tradition of individual sovereignty and independence of self. And I personally believe those are very high Islamic characteristics and qualities. I think a lot of the problems in the East is all this slavishness, and devotion and servitude to the grand Master Pu-Ba whoever. I mean, if you want my personal opinion, I do believe that. That does not mean I don’t show the utmost respect to my teachers and what I love those who respect my opinion, listens to my opinion. The true Ulama are humble, before God and the submitted, enlightened teachers of God، Almighty.

Doctor Dan Moodley The impact of mental illness can be prevented Mental illness rates amongst the ten major causes of disability in the world. It was projected that mental illness would be the number one cause of disability by the year 2020, according to World Bank figures. It appears that this projection has been overtaken due to COVID 19 and the July riots and recent floods in KZN. The resultant socioeconomic and other pressures are increasing the rate of depression and suicide in particular. Of great concern is the high level of substance abuse which is becoming a huge problem in South Africa all of which negatively impact the mental health of our youth and the community at large. Risk factors In many respects, the South Africa environment has created an atmosphere of constant anxiety all too often negatively affecting the mental health and well-being of society in general. A number of interacting factors applicable to a large percentage of the present day South African society appear to pose the greatest risk for mental illness in both children and adolescents. These include: • Negative early family experiences; • School problems including academic failure; • Problematic relationships (e.g. family, peers, educators); • Greater modern life pressures (e.g. financial

stress, stiff competition for good grades, Information overload, demands of tertiary education); • Parents’ unrealistic expectations and pressure on children to perform; • Communication breakdowns between parents and teenagers; • Substance abuse; • Exposure to family violence; • High rate of crime and violence; • Child abuse Violence The culture of crime and violence is not only affecting the South African community at large, it is having an incredibly negative and hugely adverse effect on the mental and emotional state of mind of South African youngsters, making more and more South Africans susceptible to mental health problems and adding to the mental health burden. That violence against children in SA has major psycho-social and health consequences, is confirmed in the 2014 South African Child Gauge: “The impact of violence goes beyond the physical injuries and visible scars, and evidence has shown lasting emotional and social consequences. Exposure to childhood violence, including witnessing violence in the home, is consistently found to be associated with aggressive behaviour later in life. In contrast,

Shopily your Smart Service, information & community E-Catalogue

secure attachment and social support can enhance children’s resilience and ability to cope with adverse traumatic experiences,” according to the 2014 South African Child Gauge. Peer pressure, substance abuse In addition, peer pressure may not only have a detrimental effect on children’s mental state of mind, it plays a significant role in increasing the number of youth experimenting with substances and hence increasing their susceptibility to mental health problems and impacting negatively on them academically. To make matters worse, substance abuse in a family home have been known to frequently replicate in children. Symptoms A sudden change in behaviour and/or reckless behaviour, isolating oneself from friends and family, a lack of interest or motivation, extreme irritability and moodiness and a sense of hopelessness and negativism, are all tell-tale signs that mentally all is not well with a child or young adult. Youngsters with mental health problems also tend to have sleep difficulties and increasingly turn to alcohol and other drugs, and have difficulty coping with their normal activities. Treatment It must be stressed that all is not doom and gloom There is a definite need to understand that mental illness is a medical illness, much like high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease, and that most mental ailments are treatable with medicine and psychotherapy, and by addressing appropriate social factors. Some people have a mistaken belief that they should never use medication such as anti-depressants, but psychopharmacological treatment in conjunction with psychological counseling and therapy, is an important and necessary part of treatment. Psycho therapeutically, a good therapist may be able to help you make more progress in changing your life than you would alone. If appropriately treated with medication and psychotherapy and social issues are satisfactorily addressed, success is inevitable. However, in a number of instances, non-

Page 8

compliance coupled with other external influences plays a negative role in terms of outcome, invariably resulting in relapse and or readmissions. Prevention The negative impact of mental illness can be reduced substantially if the following strategies are implemented and actively promoted: • Raise awareness of and educate individuals at risk and their families on signs and symptoms of depression and other mental illnesses. • Actively promote the alleviation of stigma and embarrassment about seeking help and accessing mental health services, as well as the message that it is okay to seek help. • Make mental health information as widely available as possible for the general public. • Improve communication between schools and mental health services for all pupils and students. • Provide additional recreational facilities for communities in need and introduce sport as an essential requirement in all schools. • The appointment of guidance counsellors in schools should be mandatory. • Comprehensive multidisciplinary facilities must be easily accessible to all communities. Most importantly, interventions also need to address the economic and socio-cultural factors that continue to exacerbate mental health disorders in this country. Once the socioeconomic and living conditions of those in need improve and South Africans start working together to create a safe and secure environment for the greater good of the country and all of its citizens, everybody stands to benefit and prosper, and significantly more in terms of their mental wellbeing. While no individual is immune to mental illness, parental care, unconditional love and upbringing in a nurturing, caring environment can reduce the risk of mental disorders substantially. Collectively our motto should be love, love and more love – this could go a long way in solving many of our general and mental healthcare problems.

National

Women’s Day

National Women’s Day is celebrated on the 9th of August every year to commemorate the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The March consisted of 20 000 women who Marched for racial equality, and petitioned against the Population Registration Act, which categorised and registered the people of our country from birth according to their race group. Although this is the initial commemoration of Women’s Day and was first celebrated in 1995. Women’s day has since then evolved into many other aspects. Over the years women empowerment campaigns have taken place to empower the woman of this country, promote gender equality in the workplace and to also take a stand against woman abuse. Although there are many ways in which it is celebrated nowadays, where businesses and organisations host women’s day lunches, events and campaigns it should be celebrated by every single woman, whether they have the opportunity to go to a campaign or not, because of what it stands for in its entirety. The woman who marched in 1956, showed boldness, courage, strength and persistence. They were not afraid to stand up for the people of this country and believed that every single individual, regardless of

colour, caste, creed or belief system has an equal right to have access to everything that this country has to offer. Bearing that in mind all woman of the country should believe in themselves and celebrate Women’s Day not only on the 9th but every day because they all have a purpose. Every time a mother sacrifices her own needs for her child and family, every time she prepares a meal for her family even when she is sick, every time she has to manage and balance being a caregiver, mother, wife and employee, every time a woman is able to overcome a challenge or rise from a failure and every time a woman shows immense strength in the face of adversities such as inequalities in the workplace, domestic violence in the home or any thing that woman have to face today. The moment they decide to fight for what is right, to go that extra mile for others, to make those sacrifices and to rise every time they fall, these are the everyday moments that should be celebrated by the woman themselves, because every woman must believe in themselves first in order to change the world. On behalf of the Shopily Team, We wish all Woman a very blessed and wonderful Women’s Day.

MariAmman Māri also known as MariAmman and Mariaai or simply Amman or Aatha is the South Indian Hindu Goddess who can take away any kind of illness or disease and a fertility (rain) Goddess. The word Mari has a sangam tamil origin meaning “Rain” and the Dravidian root term Amman meaning “Mother”. She is the main South Indian mother Goddess, predominant in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Māri is closely associated with the Hindu Goddesses Parvati and Durga. Goddess MariAmman and Goddess Kali are closely associated with each other. Festivities for her happen during the late summer, early autumm season of "Aadi". Throughout the deccan region, a grand festival known as "Aadi Thiruvizha" are taken for MaariAmman. Her worship mainly focuses on bringing rains and curing diseases like cholera, smallpox, and chicken pox. She is usually taken in procession in a decorated chariot. MariAmman is an ancient Goddess, whose worship probably originated from pre-Vedic mother of Dravidian people before the arrival of the Aryans with their Brahmanic religion. " She was believed and worshipped by the ancient Dravidian people to bring rain and hence prosperity to them as their vegetation was mainly dependent upon rain. The Goddess was not a local deity, connected to a specific location but worshiped throughout the Dravidian nation. The worshiping methods are non-vedic and often accompanied by various kinds of folk dancing. Offerings such as Pongal and Koozh that were cooked using earthen pots were also made during the festive season. Rituals such as fire walking and mouth or nose piercing were also practiced.

The Lesson of Dharma All the various scriptures in the world, the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Quran are all manifestation of this original Vedic knowledge according to a place, time & circumstance, but the message is Sanatan Dharma. And what is the meaning of Sanatan Dharma? Dharma means occupation. But more clearly the Acharyas explains, Dharma means that which cannot be separated from its source. For instance the Dharma of sugar is to be sweet, the Dharma of fire is to produce heat & light, the Dharma of water is liquidity; the Dharma of every living entity is to serve. Everyone is engaged in some sort of service; service to the nation, service to society, service to family, service to one’s own senses & mind. And Sanatan Dharma means eternal occupation, the eternal nature of every living entity. Jivera Svarupa Haya Krsnera Nityadasa That we are all eternally the servants of Krsna or Bhagavän. And to serve the lord with pure unmotivated love is the supreme occupation for all humanity.

SPIRITUAL

TRANSFORMATION By Pastor Mike Gobel

How to Overcome an Addiction through God As a ’non-profit,’ ‘public benefit’ organisation, one of the pillars of our mission (which is enshrined into our Constitution), is the element of supporting those in need of emotional, psychological and spiritual help.

Pastor Mike Gobel Associate Pastor of ‘The Campus Church’ PMB CEO - Planting Hope Foundation NPC

Surprisingly, one would be shocked to know the true number of people living all around us who are suffering from a debilitating illness or disorder, related to either substance addiction, behavioural disorders or selfdestructive anger, violent and/or abusive behaviour.

Sadly, due to the stigma related to such illnesses of addiction and behavioural disorders we find it more and more difficult to acquire financial support for this rather worthy causes. Nevertheless, we are grateful to those individuals and companies who have assisted us in recent times. That been said, I trust that this weeks article entitled, “How to Overcome an Addiction through God” will be of great benefit to someone who might be suffering right now from one of these debilitating illnesses or maybe you know of a family member or friend that has such a problem and have therefore witnessed the destructive force that such illnesses can cause a person or family. There is a solution but it requires of such a person to firstly ‘recognise that they have a problem’ and secondly ‘be willing to surrender’ not only the illness but also their life to the One who is able to, as the Word of God declares in Ephesians 3: 20-21 “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” Addictions, obsession disorders and abusive behaviour are like black holes in the realm of the natural and spiritual world. They orbit around us like the earth orbits around the sun, pulling into these voids of darkness ("nothingness"), everything good and only leaving traces of hopelessness, loneliness, pain, destruction and despair. Like festering sores, these voids grow larger and larger. The struggle of overcoming substance addiction, behavioural disorder or abusive behaviour, can feel like an impossible task to overcome—especially when faced with the challenge on your own. In most cases, due to the negative stigma associated to alcoholism, drug and porn addiction, etc., individuals and

families keep these illnesses and disorders quiet and away from the public eye which only makes the situation worse because the person invariably then doesn't get the support he/ she needs. In many cases it's hard to even say how the addiction or destructive behaviour grew to such proportions—only to find that its almost too late by the time that person cries out for help. From my own experience—in dealing with such cases, it usually starts as innocent "recreational activity," helping you unwind after a hard day at work or loosen up in and around social events. In most cases you will also find that these bad habits which later become obsessions and then addictions are fuelled by wrongful influences of those who pose as your friends but when that activity later becomes an “addiction,” they are nowhere to be found. Then of course we have the sad reality of poverty, economic downturn, loss of jobs, relationship issues, affairs in a marriage, lengthy lockdowns and a more recent trend—especially amongst our children, the dangerous infiltration of drug syndicates into the informal settlements that are in close proximity to the suburbs. Over time, these elements or a combination of them, harmless at first, now evolve into something more sinister. Before you realise it you sitting with a uncontrollable addiction. At that point, you may feel as if all hope is lost. The walls are closing in and around you, leaving you with no option other than to perpetuate the vicious addictive cycle. That's when the addiction takes control of your life and your world begins to spiral out of control. The sad part about this "journey" is that you mostly never alone on this road to self-destruction...in most cases this treacherous and life threatening journey, leaves—not only the addict or abuser devastated and broken but unfortunately leaves many innocent casualties behind. Many ‘bridges’ get burned and destroyed along the way, relationships gets broken and deep physical, emotional and psychological scares, pains and suffering are left in its wake - some that can be restored and others not. At that point, you might think that even God has forsaken you, withdrawn all support and left you to fend for yourself. But this could not be further from the truth. Psalm 50:15 reminds us that God asks us to call on Him in our times of trouble. He promises to deliver us from the darkness of our sinful nature, human weaknesses and destructive conditions as well as our wrongful actions, decisions and promises to forgive our transgressions. All we need to do is call upon His Name and He will be there for us. Taking refuge in His loving embrace can be your greatest source of strength and your one and only chance to be saved from a life of misery and eventual "eternal death.”

WEEKLY HOROSCOPE

4 – 10 AUGUST 2022 Spreading the Light of the Vedas Dr Roshan Singh

For a full and detailed horoscope for 2022, email punditroshan@telkomsa.net

Aries With the Moon in your partnership sector all day, you are more involved, agreeable, and approachable, dear Aries. Your confidence radiates through others today. While you seek a deeper and stronger sense of connection and belonging, you’re expressive and keeping things light. Family relationships can thrive with communication and a willingness to both express yourself and listen. Fortunately, there can be good opportunities to expand, strengthen, and enhance relationships, or to find peace with yourself on a matter.

Libra The Moon spends the day in your sign, dear Libra, and you can find satisfying ways to express yourself. Concentrating on the positive and supportive elements in your life can lift your spirits. Negotiations tend to fare well, and work problems tend to iron themselves out quickly today. Superiors or the public appreciate your efforts, and it’s a super time for enhancing, developing, and repairing relationships. Recognizing the essential details of a project or plan can be in focus.

Taurus You’re in fine shape for sorting, organizing, and taking care of details today, dear Taurus. Straightening out important areas of your life or improving your health or routines can be more satisfying than usual at this time of the lunar month. Communicating and sharing ideas can also figure strongly, and it can be helpful to mingle and make connections. Equality in your conversations is notable, and you appreciate it. Without the need to talk over one another, communications flow nicely.

Scorpio The Moon spends today in the sign behind yours, dear Scorpio, tuning you into your need to pull back from the mainstream of your life. If you get the chance to take a break, take advantage today! Aim to connect with your needs for rest, reflection, and emotional renewal. Still, you might enjoy focusing your energies on work or projects that give you a real sense of accomplishment. Today is also good for expression–people are listening as much as they’re talking, and it feels great to be understood. Your words of wisdom or support can be particularly appreciated.

Gemini The Moon is in your sector of play, romance, and creativity all day, dear Gemini, and you’re tuning in to your need to express and enjoy yourself. While you want to do it all, consider whether slowing things down to get them right may be best today. The Moon’s harmony with Saturn helps you maintain a steady pace. There may be a chance to show off your talents in some way, and higher-ups can be taking note. It’s a good time to negotiate or collaborate regarding money or business.

Sagittarius The Moon in your solar eleventh house all day inclines you to seek light activities and interactions, dear Sagittarius. You’re connecting with your ideals, dreams, and happiness goals. It’s a good time to take some of the recent pressures off. Fortunately, good energy is with you for communicating your wishes today and early tomorrow. Fair relationship dynamics are in focus. You may well be bringing others together. Connecting with someone through ideas or beliefs is satisfying.

Cancer The desire to settle in and enjoy comforting, grounding, and routine activities is undeniable today, dear Cancer. Earthy pursuits are in favor, but you are also in great shape with enthusiasm and spirit, making connecting through shared beliefs and goals natural. Transits today and tomorrow boost your charm and appeal. Communications open your mind, expand your hopefulness, or lead to encouraging opportunities. Love bonds strengthen, especially as you see one another for the unique and special individuals you are. At the same time, it’s easy to find common ground.

Capricorn Transits today support a goal-oriented approach, dear Capricorn, and professional interests and concerns, or responsibilities, assume more importance. More than usual, people notice what you do at this time in the lunar month. You seem to be in the best shape today if you observe and read between the lines rather than take things at face value. Throwing yourself into a project that involves investigation, analysis, and research comes naturally and is satisfying. It’s a time to recognize the importance of implementing more (or better) rules and boundaries.

Leo The Moon complements your sign nicely today, dear Leo. Energies flow well. Even so, there is some tendency to worry or stew if you’re in limbo on a matter. Fortunately, transits help you find and focus on constructive channels. You might benefit from discussions with someone closer to you or from some self-study. Buried feelings reveal themselves, or you could unearth previously confidential information. People seek your input or feedback, and giving sound advice comes naturally.

Aquarius This is another day for broadening your horizons or opening your mind to new ideas and goals, dear Aquarius. You have a good sense of what works, and you’re moving on instead of nursing your concerns. While you could battle some restlessness, channeling your feelings into satisfying activities comes fairly naturally today. You’re thinking about making changes that benefit you in the long-term, mainly related to health, wellness, money, and business. Getting in touch with what you truly value is instructive. You also enjoy supporting others today.

Virgo You seek some predictability again today, dear Virgo. You’re finding comfort in the familiar, tried and true, and routine, and it helps you center yourself. You can be relatively self-sufficient and very focused. Motivating you now is the goal of ultimately feeling less indebted or dependent. Even so, you’re in an excellent position to improve relationships today and tomorrow.Your appeal with friends, partners, or groups is great, and you’re a little more courageous about seeking the people you value most. Mutual appreciation can boost your connections. Your faith and enthusiasm are building, and the connections you make, even on a mental level, can be most beneficial. Creatively expressing yourself attracts positive responses today, and new avenues for expressing yourself or entertainment can emerge. You’re magnetic and popular with current transits, and good ideas come to you more readily.

THE SHUTERS-CRAIB LEGACY HONOURS ITS R2 MILLION PLEDGE TO COMMUNITY CHEST Richard Rangiah (Executive Director, Community Chest) presents Primi Chetty (CEO, Shuter & Shooter Publishers) and John Eglington (Finance Director, Shuter & Shooter Publishers) with a Certificate of Appreciation for R400,000 from Shuter & Shooter Publishers (Pty) Ltd. towards the full pledge of R2 million in the Shuters-Craib Legacy

Five years ago, education publishing giant, Shuter & Shooter Publishers (Pty) Ltd pledged a most generous donation of R2 million to the PMB & District Community Chest. The pledge was to be fulfilled in five tranches of R400,000 each, over five years. The donation was specifically towards strengthening the long-term sustainability of the Community Chest. Stuart Craib, the previous majority shareholder of Shuter & Shooter Publishers, initiated this gesture on his departure from the company. It was to be his way of showing his appreciation and thanking the community of Pietermaritzburg for the support his family and business enjoyed over the many years. Thus, the Shuters-Craib Legacy was established into which the R2 million donation is invested. The Community Chest only draws on the interest generated from this investment, to support its operational needs.

The Shuters-Craib Legacy is a part of the Community Chest’s bigger Red Feather Legacy Project which is a unique philanthropic opportunity for members of our community to create a perpetual legacy of giving and caring for the less fortunate in our community. Donations made as a Red Feather Legacy are invested and only the return on the investment is used by the Community Chest. So far, the Shuters-Craib Legacy is the largest single contribution in the family of Red Feather legacies. In reacting to the good news, Richard Rangiah expressed the Community Chest’s deep gratitude to Shuter & Shooter Publishers for the donation of the final tranche, which fulfils the pledge of R2 million. He noted however that the Community Chest still has a long way to go towards securing its long-term sustainability, but every new Red Feather pledge takes the Community Chest as step closer towards that goal.

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.” ~ Charles Dickens
