Teenage MENTAL HEALTH

One of the best things you can do for your teen is to be a supportive parent. If you are open and understanding with them, they will feel more comfortable, opening up, about their own mental health. If you are patient and understanding, your teen will feel more willing to work on their issues and learn new coping skills.

Some of the following symptoms to observe: Unexplained or Irrational Fears, Excessive Anger, Self-Harm, Low Self-Esteem, Social Withdrawal or Poor Body Image, Bad eating habits.

If your child is going through a personal tough time, try not to take their symptoms personally. This may not be controlled by willpower or motivation alone. Even if your teen is not open to talking about their mental health with you, seek out a professional to help in this regard.

Remember its about creating a harmonious and happy relationship with your child.

ACTINIC KERATOSES

WHAT ARE ACTINIC KERATOSES?

Actinic keratoses (Aks) are considered the earliest stage in the development of skin cancer. They are common growths of the epidermis (outermost layer of the skin), and are caused by long-term exposure to sunlight as far as back as childhood. Aks are most likely to appear after the age 40, however, in geographic areas with yearround, high-intensity sunlight, Aks may be found in persons as young as the teens and twenties. Half of all older, fair-skinned persons who live in hot, sunny areas have Aks.

Chronic sun exposure causes skin cells to change size, shape and the way they are organized. The skin cells affected in Aks are the keratinocyted. Keratinocyted are the tough-walled cells that make up 90% of the epidermis and give skin its texture. Aks are caused by changed in keratinocytes and the skin becomes rough, scaly, or mottled; and occasionally, the skin may develop bumps or small horn-like growths. Further changes in cell growth can turn Aks into squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer.

This skin Feature was rendered by Dr Raj Singh, educating the community on skin disease. He is available for a consultation at his, Scottsville branch in Pietermaritzburg or at his Durban branch.

WHAT DO ACTINIC KERATOSES LOOK LIKE?

Aks are found on chronically sun-exposed skin, most commonly on fair-skinned person, middle-aged or older. They can be found on the face, sides of the forehead, ears, the scalp of bald men, and the backs of hands. The typical AK is a dry, scaly, rough textured, skin-coloured to reddish-brown patch, or slightly elevated “bump’’. An AK may range from the size of a pinhead to larger than a quarter. Skin-coloured Aks may be easier to feel than to see and may be noticed more by touch because they have a sharp, hard scale and feel like sandpaper. They are often sensitive or “ touchy”. Wrinkling, furrowing, and other signs of sun damage may be present with an AK. An AK at any location may seem to disappear at times for weeks or months, and return at the same place. If they are picked off, they grow back. If an AK undergoes rapid upward growth, it may become a “cutaneous horn” which gets its name from its appearance, as it can look like the horn of an animal. The size of a horn may vary from a pinhead to a pencil head eraser, and its shape may be straight or curved. The ear is a common site for a cutaneous horn. Sometimes, a skin cancer can hide below a cutaneous horn. An AK can also appear as a diffuse, scaling lesion on the lower lip that dries and cracks open. Our

Spreading the Light of the Vedas

For a full and detailed horoscope for 2022, email punditroshan@telkomsa.net

Aries

The Moon spends the day in your communications sector, dear Aries, stimulating your curiosity and your need for light and easy going exchanges. Even so, the Moon meets Mars in this busy area of your solar chart, and you can be especially enthusiastic and perhaps a little impatient! You can’t wait to get things done.

Taurus

With today’s Moon, your spirit is in need of a bit of comfort and familiarity, dear Taurus. Activities that nourish the body and soul can be most welcome. A Moon-Mars meetup in your solar second house encourages acting on your feelings or making moves to improve your comfort. It could also energize a brewing matter related to money or respect.

Gemini

The Moon is in your sign all day, dear Gemini, tugging at your emotions and encouraging you to express yourself. You’re paying more attention to your emotional needs, and selfdirected activities seem to suit you best. Watch for impatience or impulsiveness with the Moon and Mars meeting in your sign today. Otherwise, you are shining socially, and you have more courage and energy to make needed changes in your life.

Cancer

The Moon spends the day in the sign right behind yours, dear Cancer, presenting a time to reflect upon and digest recent events. It would help if you had a break from situations that drain you emotionally as you rebuild energy on an emotional level. This transit draws your strong attention to background, past, or private matters.

Leo

Sharing ideas and personal philosophies might bond you with others today, dear Leo. The Moon spends the day in your social sector, awakening your sense of community and desire to contribute. There should be general ease in finding outlets for self-expression.

Virgo

Today’s energies support a goal-oriented approach, dear Virgo, and you can feel good about doing something welldefined or specific. Professional interests and concerns, or responsibilities, tend to assume more importance in your life right now.

Libra

You can feel free and motivated to pursue your interests today, dear Libra. Today’s Moon transit highlights your need for nonroutine experiences, and with the Moon and Mars meeting up, your enthusiasm is strong for a plan, topic, or idea. Impatience may be a problem with this combination, but gently pushing your normal boundaries could be fruitful.

Scorpio

Today’s transits support emotional healing and bonding with loved ones, dear Scorpio. You pursue your goals with courage and determination as the Moon and Mars meet in your solar eighth house. You may want to make a lifestyle change or tackle a special project.

Sagittarius

The Moon transits your opposite sign all day, dear Sagittarius, meeting with Mars there and challenging you to see a different perspective. One-on-one relationships or your feelings for someone can be animated. Others inspire you or raise strong emotions in you today.

Capricorn

You have an easier time getting what you want to do done today, dear Capricorn, although impatience could be a stumbling block. Your instincts for priorities are strong, and previously puzzling situations can clear up. Getting things done helps free up your mind, and your motivation to improve things tends to dominate. You might also decide to resolve a conflict or problem that’s been a burden.

Aquarius

You instinctively know how to work for instead of against yourself today, dear Aquarius. You may be wearing your heart on your sleeve, and connecting without pretenses is in strong favor. Your emotions and desire nature are playing off one another, which can be motivating.

Pisces

You’re ready to get comfortable today, dear Pisces, with the Moon in your solar fourth house all day. However, you’re also in a productive, constructive frame of mind, and you’re ready to act on your desires and needs. It’s a fine time to build relationships, bond with others, and connect with your own heart.
