Prayer & Mindfulness ~ Irshad Soofi

Allah says: “We do not charge any soul except [with that within] its capacity. And when you testify, be just, even if it’s against near relative.” (Qur’an, 6:152) Even if it’s your community, your own Ummah. It doesn’t matter what it is, if it’s wrong we condemn that wrong. This is a high religion, a religion of ethics and community.

The Prophet said to hold onto the strong rope of Allah, His Book. To make dhikr, the remembrance and learning the wisdoms of Allah, and this takes you to a straight path. Tongues will not be confusing if they quote the Qur’an, and he said you will not have diverse opinions if you follow the Qur’an, the ulema will never tire of it, and the pious will never grow bored or weary reciting it.

The Prophet peace be upon him said, a time will come when you will see darkness followed by darkenss. `Ali (ra) asked, what is the way out, and the Prophet replied,”Kitab Allah, book of God”. The Qur’an has news of what went before us and what will come after, it is a judge and an arbitrator between you. Whoever leaves the Qur’an, does it out of arrogance, Allah will break his back. And if you seek guidance in other books, you will be lead astray.

This is the book of God that even when the jinn heard it they said we’ve heard a wondrous book that must have a guidance. If you judge by the Qur’an, you will be just, if you speak by the Qur’an, you will be truthful. If you act according to it, you will gain a reward, and if you call to it, you will be taken to a straight path. The Qur’an is a protection, a safety for whoever follows it.”

Gas Heaters

Dj Pranesh for small functions catering to all ages and types of music. Contact details : 071556 3228 or 072 971 3865

This year’s Winter may be more severe than the previous 2 years, since we have not yet entered July, and yet we are already experiencing very cold days. There are many types of heaters available on the market such as fan heaters, oil heaters and bar heaters, however given the cost of living right now, it is no surprise that a lot of people are considering a more cost effective method, to avoid electricity bills rising and there is always the possibility of load shedding starting again if too many people are using electric heating systems to warm their homes this Winter. Looking into buying a Gas Heater would be a better and more cost effective option. Especially if you live in very cold climate or if you have a very large home. This is because Gas Heaters are very effective in heating larger areas and it works very well in very cold weather, because Gas systems are able to reach a higher temperature than electric units. Gas is also much cheaper than running an electric unit every evening in your home. There are many types of Gas Heaters available, make sure you do research to find the one that is best suited for you and your home. Please also note that patio Gas Heaters or outdoor Gas Heaters are made differently to those of indoor usage and therefore if purchased should only be used outdoors, as they could cause danger indoors. Also always remember to switch off your gas heater properly before bedtime.

LAUNCH OF 2022 COMRADES TOYOTA

WIN-A-CAR

COMPETITION The Return – Sishay’Ibuya

With 71 days to go to the 95th Comrades Marathon, the Comrades Marathon Association, in conjunction with longstanding sponsor, Toyota South Africa, launched its 2022 Comrades Toyota Win-A-Car competition. The initiative is aimed at fostering wider support for charitable fundraising for the CMA’s six official charities; namely The Community Chest of Pietermaritzburg and Durban, Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC), Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, Hospice Association KZN, Rise Against Hunger and WildTrust. One of the main fundraising drivers of the Comrades Amabeadibeadi Charity initiative is the Toyota Win-a-Car Competition, whereby a brand new Toyota Corolla Quest will be up for grabs on Comrades Race Day, 28 August 2022. CMA Vice Chairperson, Les Burnard said, “This is a truly significant contribution to the greater good from South

Page 10

Africa’s largest automotive manufacturer. We are ever so grateful to Toyota for so generously backing the CMA’s official charity initiative, thus enabling us to raise more funds for such worthy causes.” Runners, supporters and the greater public can purchase raffle tickets from each of the six official charities, via the Comrades Marathon website and Comrades App; as well as at the Pietermaritzburg and Durban registration points as of 17 June until 12 noon on race day, 28 August. The cost is R20 per ticket. Another exciting part of the 2022 Amabeadibeadi Charity Drive is the continuation of the Race4Charity initiative. Via this development, runners have the opportunity to “secure” their spot closer to the front of the Comrades start line and improve their seeding batch, while raising funds for a good cause. Over the years, Comrades runners have raised millions of rands through this fundraising innovation. Race4Charity gives individuals the opportunity to not just make a difference, but to get people involved and race collectively for the benefit of charities. Runners can go to the Comrades website www.comrades.com and follow the Race4Charity link. Runners can sign up and choose which of the six Amabeadibeadi charities they would like to support. Clickthrough to http://comrades.com/charities/race-4charity for more information. Pat Freeman, who heads the CMA’s Charities & CSI Committee added, “The aim of the CMA’s fundraising platforms is to give back to the needy and less fortunate in a way that uplifts society and adds value to the lives of ordinary people. Our six official Amabeadibeadi charities are carefully selected to do just that and we are grateful for the hard work carried out by them on a daily basis.” VP: Marketing at Toyota South Africa, Glenn Crompton says: “Our organisation is proud to be associated with both the Comrades Marathon and Amabeadibeadi Charity initiative. With Toyota’s business ethos built on a culture of respect for people, it is only fitting that we partner with a charity drive that is geared towards making a difference in people’s lives.”

Yajña (Sacrifice): Generally, the term Yajña refers to fire sacrifice. In the Bhagavad Gita, Yajña includes all the prescribed actions laid down in the scriptures, when they are done as an offering to the Supreme. The elements of nature are integral parts of the system of God’s creation. All parts of the system naturally draw from and give back to the whole. The sun lends stability to the earth and provides heat and light necessary for life to exist. Earth creates food from its soil for our nourishment and also holds essential minerals in its womb for a civilized lifestyle.

The meaning of Yajña (Sacrifice)?

The air moves the life force in our body and enables transmission of sound energy.

JYOTISHACHARYA SHASTRI PUNDIT ROSHAN SINGH

The Bhagavad Gita states that we are obligated to participate with the creative force of nature by performing our prescribed duties in the service of God. That is the Yajña God expects from us.

We humans too, are an integral part of the entire system of God’s creation. The air that we breathe, the earth that we walk upon, the water that we drink, and the light that illumines our day, are all gifts of creation to us. While we partake of these gifts to sustain our lives, we also have our duties toward the integral system.

SPIRITUAL

TRANSFORMATION by Pastor Mike Gobel Associate Pastor of ‘The Campus Church’

THE BIBLICAL TRUTH ABOUT ‘ANGELS’ INTRODUCTION This week I am going to tackle a topic that is extremely misunderstood and therefore many times misinterpreted by many in all different religious dispensations. We rarely give much thought to them but in truth if we understood Pastor Mike Gobel them better or understood Associate Pastor of ‘The Campus Church’ PMB their function and purpose I believe they could be of CEO - Planting Hope Foundation NPC greater benefit to us. When I was in primary school, our teacher instructed us to slide over in our desk seats to “make room for our guardian angel.” As a child I used to love sleeping under a picture of my Grandfather. It made me feel safe. As a adult I recall on many occasions I would pray asking God to send His “angels” to surround my vehicle on a long journey, or if I had to travel on a domestic flight from South Africa to one of the African states I would always ask God to send His angels to protect the plane and its passengers. But beyond that, I wouldn’t say I knew much about ’angels’ only under I began to study theology and the doctrines of God’s Word.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT ANGELS? Just to keep everything in perspective, let’s look at just a few things that the Bible says about angels.

God Created Angels They are a spirit, not human, but can take on human form when God appoints them to certain tasks. They are a separate created being. We do not “become angels” in heaven. They neither reproduce nor marry (Mark 12:25). We don’t know for sure how many there are but see that “ten thousand” came down on Mount Sinai with God when he gave Moses the Ten Commandments. John hears the voices of angels that were too numerous to count singing around God’s throne in Rev 5:11.

Angels Are Messengers The word angel comes from a Greek word which means “messenger.” God sent angels to communicate His will to

humans. We read about them in this way in their conversation with Abraham and Sarah to announce her pregnancy, to a discouraged Gideon, and also to Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds regarding the birth of Jesus.

Angel’s Protection Psalm 91:11- “He will give His angels charge of you, to guard you in all your ways,” and Hebrews 1:14 speaks of angels as “ministering spirits sent to serve those who will receive salvation.” Psalm 34:7- “On every side, the Lord’s messenger protects those who honour God; and he delivers them.” I find this so comforting!

God Sends Angels While believers prayed earnestly for Peter in prison, an angel appeared, woke Peter, and the chains fell off his wrists. The angel then walked Peter right out of the prison. (Acts 12:1-17). This was a miraculous escape. My “Christian” worldview tells me miracles still occur today. Could angels in our lives be working at the requests of God? From what I understand of the Word of God the answer is yes!

Angels Rejoice “There is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Luke 15:10) Certainly, they are also filled with joy when they praise and worship God!

Angels Worship God The prophet Isaiah had a vision of God on his throne with angels calling “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty” (Isaiah 6:2). “Multitudes” of angels praised God after they gave the shepherds the message of Jesus’ birth. John records many instances of angels singing songs of praise to God in Revelation.

Role of Angels in our Lives God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) He used angels in powerful ways in the past and I believe that He still does so today. What does is important to understand is that God alone instructs and commands them. We should not be asking them for anything or praying to them to do anything for us. Therefore the prayer must to directed to God, asking Him to send His angels to protect us. You must trust that God is at work in your life and therefore you need to lean on his Holy Spirit within you.

A Tribute to Daphne Josiah... Born 2 May 1936 - Called to eternal rest 17 June 2022

God our Father, your Son Jesus Christ died and rose again for our salvation. We entrust to you the soul of you servant Stella Daphne Josiah, praying that she and all the faithfully departed may be revealed as your children when Christ shall come again; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit be honour and glory, now and forever. Amen Today I feel privileged to pay tribute to a great women: ballroom, Latin American dancer and teacher by profession and by nature, Whose void has left too greater gap to fill. Never a harsh word, always smiling, always giving and sharing in nature, and encourager to be better and supportive to everyone. Born on the 02 May 1936 to Aiden and Lilly Josiah. She started her schooling at Baijoo and Maharaj School, and completed it in Pietermaritzburg Indian Girls High School. She thereafter completed her teaching qualification at Springfield College of Education. Daphne was a teacher at Nizamia School for 34 years before her retirement. Nizamia is the only school she taught at which is an unusual occurrence in the profession. At the age of 25 she started her dance career, and together with Ronnie Gabriel created a legacy that spanned over 61 years. Ronnie and Daphne were and remain the 10 times undefeated South African Champions for Ballroom and Latin American style dancing. At 86 years of age, she still continued to teach dancing, up until the day of her passing. The legacy that Daphne has left spans generation. Her social dancing classes have created a community. The friendships and bonds that have been created are beyond comprehention. She has never seen any pupil as a pupil but has encouraged the different years of compentancy to assist those who were new: a new family was created. Daphne is survived by her sister of Pamela Nair and sister in law Priscilla Josiah. Her siblings the late Roger Josiah, Douglas Josiah, Joyce Ince, Janet and Jeanette Josiah and Ethel Josiah and Sybil Singh. Was always fondly remembered. Daphne was a cherished sister,

aunt, cousin and friend. As I sit and reflect I will always remember her strong desire to keep people together, be it family, friends or pupils. Her home was always open to all and people were met with a warm smile and a meal. As a family we thank you for all the positive reinforcements with your kind words, reassurance of your support, encouragement to be the best we can be. Thank you for your caring and loving attitude towards us. Words cannot express the impact you have had on each of us. Your generosity of heart, spirit, love and hospitality has been an inspiration and a blessing. And I know that your legacy has extended to those in your Dance class: they have turned from pupils with a desire to learn into loved ones you held dear and whom hold you in the highest regard. Before I end I would like to place on record my sincere thanks and appreciation to all Aunty Daphnes School pupils over the years for the support you have given her. You have all been among the greatest joys of her life. She has held each one of you in her heart from the moment she met you. Rest assured that of her love and appreciation for every one of you. As you soar with the angles and take up your room in the mansion God has built for you, I know you are happy and at peace. In the words of Donna Targaat: I am jealous of the angels around the throne tonight. Rest well the Lords good and faithful servant! You have fought the good fight, you have kept the faith, you have won the race, and now you dwell with your Loving Redeemer! ‘For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything: else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ Romans 8:38-39 We will miss you. We love you very much! May your soul rest in peace! Till we meet again!

Shuter & Shooter Publishers which specialises in publishing learning and teaching materials, made an unprecedented donation-in-kind of educational resources for the benefit of the Community Chest and some of its impact partners. The value of the donation was in excess of R398,000.00. The Community Chest identified some primary schools, Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres and children’s homes to benefit from this dream windfall.
