Knowledge and Wisdom ~ Irshad Soofi

An Aalim is never the one who has the most knowledge or information. Imam Mālik encapsulated this beautifully when he said: ‎Laysal ilm kasartal riwayaath Real knowledge; is not knowing many, many narrations (hadith and knowing all of the Holy Qur’aan and these things) Wa innama huwa Nurun yaja’alahu fi qalbun mu’min (The real knowledge) is a light that Allah puts into the hearts of the mu’mineen That light or nur is the result of the intellectual aspect of knowledge literally beginning to merge with the flesh and blood of the human being.

It is what Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali [born 1335 (736H)] said: Mubaashiratun ilm qalbun mu’min It is when the knowledge begins to have a penetration into the heart of the mu’min and begins to permeate the life blood of the mu’min. Knowledge literally inundates the human being and he becomes yamshi ‘the nur’. God, Almighty says in the Holy Qur’aan in the 6th Sura al- An’aam [The Cattle] Verse 122: Can he who was dead, to whom We gave life, and a light whereby he can walk amongst men, be like him who is in the depths of darkness, from which he can never come out? Thus to those without faith their own deeds seem pleasing.

“Our children are the rock on which our future will be built, our greatest asset as a nation.” ~ Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela Day not only celebrates Nelson Mandela’s life, but it is also a global call to action for people to recognize their ability to have a positive effect on others around them. CAREER FOCUS with Kellan Khan

Tell us a more about yourself? My name is Kellan and I am 29 years old, born in Pietermaritzburg and recently married. I started working part time jobs since the end of Grade 11. However, I loved being in the kitchen with my mum and aunt from a young age and it is through them I have developed a passion for baking. I began baking for my family, trying out the household recipes until people around me started suggesting that I open up a small ‘at home’ business. After much consideration and support, Beautifully Baked by Kellan was finally born in 2015 and I have been open for business ever since. I studied and obtained my Bachelor of Social Science degree all while working and running Beautifully Baked. I guess my long-term goal would be to one day have a little bakery that I can pass on from generation to generation. I love being challenged and learning new things. I think that so many of us place limits on ourselves without realizing our capabilities. Which is why I have decided to share a little in hope that my story will encourage at least one person to take that step towards their future. What inspired you to choose your respective field of work / business? I would say trying to make extra pocket money to support myself whilst my parents funded my studies. What service, services do you offer? I bake a wide variety of cakes and desserts suitable for all occasions. Whether its to curb a craving or cater for a bigger function, Beautifully Baked by Kellan is always available to assist.

To what do you attribute your success? I think what attributes to my success is my motivation and hard work. It isn’t easy working a full-time job, running a side business all whilst maintaining a balanced life. However, I have set goals for my life and its only through hard work and motivation that I will achieve those goals. I think it is important to also be patient and mindful that success does not happen overnight, but if you push through, anything is possible. What’s your company’s objective? To provide quality goods and exceptional service that suits your pocket. What are some of your company’s achievements thus far? I think I consider being consistent and in business for so many years as a definite achievement. It is not always the case that small businesses survive the economic climate that we find ourselves in but I have somehow managed to push through. Does your company assist the community? Yes, I do, I love helping the community. Beautifully Baked by Kellan has made multiple donations of cupcakes for cancer and other initiatives. What do you like doing in your spare time? I don’t really have too much spare time as I bake when I’m not working my normal full-time job. But when I am free, I try to spend more time with my husband and our little fur baby as well as try out new recipes to add to my menu What advice would you give to the next generation? To never stop believing in yourself, to push on even when everything is falling apart around you because every situation is a test from the Almighty that’s put in your path to teach you, mould you and make you the person that you are now. Just keep on keeping on…

MariAmman Māri also known as MariAmman and Mariaai or simply Amman or Aatha is the South Indian Hindu Goddess who can take away any kind of illness or disease and a fertility (rain) Goddess. The word Mari has a sangam tamil origin meaning “Rain” and the Dravidian root term Amman meaning “Mother”. She is the main South Indian mother Goddess, predominant in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Māri is closely associated with the Hindu Goddesses Parvati and Durga. Goddess MariAmman and Goddess Kali are closely associated with each other. Festivities for her happen during the late summer, early autumm season of "Aadi". Throughout the deccan region, a grand festival known as "Aadi Thiruvizha" are taken for MaariAmman. Her worship mainly focuses on bringing rains and curing diseases like cholera, smallpox, and chicken pox. She is usually taken in procession in a decorated chariot. MariAmman is an ancient Goddess, whose worship probably originated from pre-Vedic mother of Dravidian people before the arrival of the Aryans with their Brahmanic religion. " She was believed and worshipped by the ancient Dravidian people to bring rain and hence prosperity to them as their vegetation was mainly dependent upon rain. The Goddess was not a local deity, connected to a specific location but worshiped throughout the Dravidian nation. The worshiping methods are non-vedic and often accompanied by various kinds of folk dancing. Offerings such as Pongal and Koozh that were cooked using earthen pots were also made during the festive season. Rituals such as fire walking and mouth or nose piercing were also practiced.

GIVING THEIR TIME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Scholars from Pietermaritzburg Girls High School, Maritzbrug College, Athlone and Silwanetshe Primary School came together with the Mediclinic team to give back more than 67 minutes. The environmental enthusiasts helped the Mediclinic team clean the litter along the banks of the Duzi river on Mandela day. The debris washed down after the recent floods.

“This community-environmental initiative is an annual event for the hospital team –

by creating awareness and involving the local school community, we encourage behaviour change in order to limit our overall impact on the environment. We encourage reduction, reuse and recycling of general waste.” ~Reshnee Beekrum

PROMOTING PEACE, RECONCILIATION, SOCIAL COHESION AND NON-VIOLENCE

365 DAYS OF NO TO GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE - ESSAY Nikita Deveduth, Grade 5, TPA Primary School

Gender based violence is on a steady increase during the past two years. Gender based violence is when harm is done to an individual by another of the opposite gender. It is not only woman that are affected, even men are abused by their partner or members of the community. Ever since the lockdown in 2020, people’s frustrations grew as they were confined to their homes for a long time. Even our president mentioned in his speeches that Gender Based Violence is another kind of pandemic like corona virus that needs urgent attention! Communities need to stand up. In some households, it is normal for the man to be the breadwinner and run the house, taking all decisions.

In recent years woman have also taken up this role due to financial reasons. In some cultures it is seen as the man’s duty to rule and prove their manhood by undermining and hitting his wife/girlfriend. They do not give woman equal status. Violence in any form is unacceptable! We can only hope for a better future. Support groups help the abused and crimes must be reported to get justice they need. We can stop incidents such as the sense less killing of young Tshegofatise Pule who was 8 months pregnant when she was murdered by her boyfriend.

DO NOT STAY SILENT, SAY NO TO GENDER BASED VIOLENCE !!!

SPIRITUAL

TRANSFORMATION by Pastor Mike Gobel

Associate Pastor of ‘The Campus Church’

THE SURVIVAL OF HUMANITY If you consider that the human race has been around for thousands of years, the last hundred or even fifty or less don’t seem that long. And yet, it is in this short period of our human existence that our core beliefs, values, moral principles and virtues have dramatically shifted from a society that strongly believed in the certainty of Godly truth and in pursuit of moral values to an almost denial or questioning that “biblical truth” even exists or is of much value to humanity. This might sound shocking to some but don’t take my word for it, let’s look at the evidence to see how far humanity has indeed gone away from what God had intended. When we look back into the historical significance of the Babylonians, Romans, Egyptians and the Israelites, even though there were severe elements of brutally, crime and corruption to speak of those people gave political, social and spiritual explanations for what went on in their physical lives that was openly recorded on temple walls and hieroglyphics for the world to see. When major decisions needed to be made by political and spiritual leaders, it was done in public. They also made moral and ethical decisions on the basis of the supernatural; things were believed to be right or wrong based on what God thought not on what man decided. Of course, not everyone believed in the God of Moses, Isaac and Jacob but history shows us that every civilization developed a way of thinking that looked for ‘truth’ on a supernatural level. Societies that didn’t recognise the one true God were sometimes closer to finding Him and finding truth than people are today because they were actively seeking these things on a “spiritual” rather than a natural or human level of consciousness. Yet today we fear to even mention or consider the possibility of God’s divine intervention when it comes to aspects of business, politics, commerce or education. In ancient times they watched and listened for signs and wonders. Godly revelation was their source of ultimate Truth. Today we seek not Godly revelation but man’s interpretation, then we wonder why we get it wrong most of the time. Why our decisions and our

actions are not blessed and why we continue to search for what we believe to be the “secret” to God’s answers for humanity. But let me tell you a secret of my own, God has no need to play cat and mouse with his creation. He has no secrets. Hebrews 13: 7-9 says, “Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings…” The truth is that the answers to our survival lies in learning from our mistakes of the past that brought us to this place of moral decay in the first place. We hold the key to the cause and effect of our own selfless pursued for endless power, artificial intelligence, immeasurable wealth and selfish greed. But this relentless craving and desire for more comes at a price. In a recent medical journal, reviewed by Dr. Candace Crowley, PhD, she touched on the origin, cause and effect of an "existential crisis" in our lives and what such existential crisis could potentially do to harm the very stability and ‘survival of humanity.’ It made me think, are we - holistically speaking of course, going through an ‘existential crisis’ and are we willing and/or able to consciously do something about the situation to avoid a possible catastrophic outcome that could alter and shape the very foundation of our moral existence.

What is an Existential Crisis? An existential crisis occurs when questions are been asked about our identity and the survival of humanity (or) the future existence of the world around us becomes overwhelmingly unstable and insecure to the point that it creates and stressful psychological condition that affects our daily lives in terms of our cognitive behaviour and outcomes. Existential thoughts include ideas about your life, values, religion, job, studies, relationships, family ...

SPIRITUAL

TRANSFORMATION by Pastor Mike Gobel

Associate Pastor of ‘The Campus Church’ and priorities, as well as the stability of our environment and the direct impact that these potential instabilities could have on our personal lives. An existential crisis occurs when these thoughts become persistent, overwhelming and unresolved which eventually can manifest into wrongful choices, irrational and/or obsessive behaviour, uncontrollable emotional and psychological outbursts, lack of empathy and remorse, as well as violent and aggressive tendencies and behaviour been displayed by individuals and even communities to the point of a total breakdown of law and order and self-control. These moments of outrage, mayhem and violence can become catastrophic, especially when they are influenced and/or fuelled by political, administrative or service delivery intolerance. We often see this in cases where the community take the law into their own hands to perform ‘mob violence’ or ‘mob justice’ against or towards someone or a certain entity, government authority or institution that allegedly caused them harm, pain or suffering. Sadly, not so long ago we witnessed such senseless behaviour play itself out on the streets of South Africa after the arrest of our former president Jacob Zuma and the mayhem that followed, of random and inconsiderate looting, killing of innocent people, irresponsible destruction of property, arrests of many citizens and overall insecurity and instability in our country, which is a testament to how “mob justice/ violence” in the eyes of an angry community can take a deadly and destructive turn when fuelled by anger, hatred, bitterness and nonsensical ‘ungodly’ behaviour. We might not like to talk about it or admit it but this type of inhumane, selfless and inconsiderate behaviour has unfortunately haunted our very existence from the beginning of time – especially in terms of what we witnessed during the days of Apartheid where the innocent where beaten, segregated and even killed because of racial and ethnic disparities. Unfortunately what we have not come to realise and understand is that all this anger, bitterness, unforgiveness and resentment doesn't just vanish

overnight because we now have a difference political dispensation. This silent beast is like a virus that hovers over a nation and its people and begins to merge and entrench itself into the DNA of its citizens, culture and moral consciousness. Just like corruption, unlawfulness and injustice that is now seen as the easy road to fortune and fame and which could sway the balance of power and authority to secure a higher position or a better lifestyle irrespective of the consequences. We will never truly understand the serious harm that Apartheid caused unless you had ‘walked the road to freedom’ yourself. The problem is, something needs to be done about it. If we are simply going to ignore these ‘red flags’ of moral decay where will it end? Left to our own self-destruction, could we as humanity eventually end up in a world not far removed from a Sodom and Gomorra type scenario? Or could it be that we are already there but due to stubbornness and denial are we deliberately ignoring the potential risks or threats been posed on our very survival? I am of the opinion that if we ignore the existential threats that we currently face in terms of our moral decay then we will have nothing to offer the next generation who will suffer the consequences of our ungodly, destructive and inconsiderate behaviour. So how do we change it? Firstly, we need to come back to a place where we recognise that God is the ‘Supreme Authority’ over heaven and earth and since many people no longer believe in the revelation of a ‘supernatural standard’ of existence, they have now found another basis for moral decisions. Their sources of truth has become distorted by reason and human intervention, so it’s no surprise that those same sources have become the standard for moral decisions but also for moral decay. Instead of asking, “What would God do?” people are asking, “What does reason tell us is best for humanity?” Who knows, it might take 100 years, but eventually people will begin to realise that human reason hasn't eliminated the problems of poverty, crime and hunger. ‘If we are going to leave God out of the equation we are in serious trouble.’

21 JULY – 27 JULY 2022 Spreading the Light of the Vedas Dr Roshan Singh

For a full and detailed horoscope for 2022, email punditroshan@telkomsa.net

Aries Your desire to solve problems and tackle your projects is real, but the social side of things can distract you today, dear Aries. You can be unsettled about a matter related to a friend or associate, which can interfere with productivity. Breaks in the routine are also likely. Someone is contrary, or a relationship is complicated. Certainly, people are giving off very mixed signals now, but overthinking things only leads to trouble. Whether to enlist help or go solo on a matter can be a dilemma.

Libra You can feel unsettled about a relationship or work issue today, dear Libra, and distractions are plenty. The best way to handle current influences is to proactively look for those things you genuinely need to change rather than let restlessness control your mood. It’s probably best to pace yourself with a Jupiter-Saturn influence this week, especially in areas where you’ve been going too fast or pushing too far, mainly related to relationships and special projects.

Taurus You’re busier, more connected, and involved than usual today, dear Taurus, but also perhaps a little high-strung. There is a tendency to stir up some trouble or to act on a whim, but try not to allow inner restlessness to set you back. It’s best to aim for self-understanding to get to the root of problems rather than use a band-aid fix. There can be changes in plans or an inability to rely on others, but you can come up with some satisfying conclusions or strategies in response.

Scorpio With today’s transits, there can be a noncommittal theme, dear Scorpio, or a sense that you can’t rely on plans or others temporarily. There can be some fickleness to deal with now, whether within yourself or through others. While you may need a small change of pace, overarching influences this week suggest a slow but steady approach is best. Overdoing even a good thing can spoil things, especially related to home life, work, or routines.

Gemini While you have a strong desire to stick close to home or with familiar situations today, dear Gemini, another part of you is inclined to feel that you’re missing out as you do, and this combination can lead to a restless, discontented frame of mind. Watch for fickleness now, as you could put a lot of energy into getting what you want but not appreciating it once you have it! This can be a sign that you need a change of pace. Work on making adjustments today rather than making bold moves. Cancer There can be surprises in your relationships or social life that throw you for a loop, dear Cancer. Still, it’s best to stay centered and calm rather than focus on being interrupted if there are changes in plans to manage. Transits this week remind you to be realistic, and that growth should be steady for it to stick! Refining current projects, particularly related to your career, money, support system, or work, makes the most sense now. Leo Today’s Venus-Uranus transit introduces some surprise elements to your day, dear Leo. Although this can be disruptive on some level, it can lead to new ideas or even breakthroughs in thinking about past matters or longterm goals. You might come to a better understanding of your ambitions. New visions of your future motivate and inspire you today despite minor interruptions. At the same time, transits now remind you to take things a step at a time for best results. Virgo You can experience some unrest or conflicted feelings about a friendship or project today, dear Virgo. It’s not the best day for follow-through. There could be a change of plans or difficulty getting others to go along with your initiatives. Current transits highlight a need to go slowly, in general, and especially with a work or health initiative. A steady pace will help you get back on track. Sagittarius People may not be as reliable as you’d like today, dear Sagittarius, but this can be about scattered energies and not something to take personally. Whims can take hold. Try to treat interruptions or schedule changes as unimportant in the long run. It’s a time for making edits and refinements instead of pushing forward too eagerly. In some ways, this may even be a comforting thought if you’ve been particularly excited about your current projects but perhaps taking on a little too much. Capricorn There can be some mixed signals to manage today, dear Capricorn, and communications are tricky. For one thing, you may be second-guessing your first impression or past choices. For another, restlessness can lead to unusual whims or desires, but your heart may not be fully into it. You might only need a change of pace. All in all, it’s unlikely to be anything drastic or permanent, but it could lead to a few misunderstandings or minor tensions. Keep the status quo if possible now. Aquarius Influences active today can stir up some minor trouble, dear Aquarius, but they can also help redirect you along a better path. You could find it hard to satisfy an itch, but you might consider that you need a change of pace. Even a tiny change in your routine can be pleasant. Look for things to update. Still, circumstances can remind you of the need to slow down and make adjustments so that you can make progress later. Pisces Today’s Venus-Uranus minor challenging influence can quicken the pace, dear Pisces, or leave you feeling somewhat restless and impatient. Look for ways to deal with making constructive changes rather than random ones. In truth, it may be best to conserve your energy, observe, and strategize. There may be a delay to deal with or an apparent backward step with a pursuit, and editing or refining can be in order. Big or bold moves are not in favor just for now.

THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY OF SA DONATES A VEHICLE TO MIDLANDS HOSPICE Angie Narayanan (Community Chest) and Meghan Coslett (Midlands Hospice) give a “Thank You!” Thumbs-up to the Muslim Community of South Africa, for their generous donation of a much-needed vehicle for the Midlands Hospice

Midlands Hospice (formerly Howick Hospice) was established in 1987. Their main objectives are to provide free palliative care, education and psychosocial support to those who have been diagnosed with terminal cancer, motor neurone disease, HIV/Aids and TB. Many of their patients live in impoverished conditions with limited access to basic health services and are very dependent on the care and support received from Midlands Hospice. The Community Chest encourages its impact partners, like Midlands Hospice, to strive for greater self-reliance through building streams of income from incomegenerating activities. Increasingly, NPOs (not for profit organisations) are recognizing that it is not feasible to rely or become dependent on donor funding alone to remain operational. Over the past few years, Midlands Hospice has led the way in growing its selfsustainability through its Charity Shop.

The Community Chest supported the upgrade of the Charity Shop run by Midlands Hospice and now the feather-in-the-cap moment arrived when the Community Chest facilitated the acquisition of a bakkie on behalf of the Midlands Hospice and its Charity Shop. Making this dream come true for Midlands Hospice was the Muslim Community of South Africa who collectively and most generously sponsored the funds for the purchase of the vehicle. A hearty “Thank You!” goes out to the Muslim Community of South Africa from the Midlands Hospice and the Community Chest. The vehicle is the next step up towards greater financial self-reliance for the Midlands Hospice. Donors, if you wish to partner with Community Chest to assist our partners and their beneficiaries strengthen their impact in our communities, please email Angie on chestpro@communitychest.org.za or contact her on 072 791 031.
