Self Care ROUTINES

Self-care routines do not have to be a huge ordeal. You may practice self-care by carving out 30 minutes a day to implement a holistic practice into your day, whether it is yoga, meditation, or another method like art or music therapy.

Try by implementing these self-care ideas to your lifestyle. Move your body by doing a daily walk, yoga, or going to the gym. Nutrition is also a major part of self care and you must also be conscious of the foods you consume. Journaling helps to also motivate you. Get creative, If you are a writer, painter, musician, or love to sculpt, carve out 30 minutes each day to do what you love. Unplug yourself from the world, try out hiking on an outdoor venture.

The hardest part is when it comes to self care, is making time for what ever you choose to do every day. Consider creating a self-care routine that will best suit your lifestyle and be disciplined to it.

ROSACEA

Rosacea is a common skin disease that causes redness, pustules, papules, and swelling on the face. Often referred to as “adult acne”, Rosacea frequently begins as a tendency to flush or blush easily. It may progress to persistent redness in the centre of the face that may gradually involve the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose. The eyes, ears, chest, and back may also be involved. With time, small blood vessels and tiny pimples begin to appear on and around the reddened area; however, unlike acne, there are no blackheads.

When Rosacea first develops, the redness may come and go. Some people may flush or blush and never form pustules and papules. Small dilated vessels also may be present due to prolonged sun exposure. However, when the skin does not return to its normal colour, and when other symptoms such as pimples and enlarged blood vessels become visible, it is best to seek advice form a dermatologist. The condition may last for years, rarely reverse itself, and can become worse without treatment. About 50% of people with Rosacea have eye involvement (ocular Rosacea). Some Rosacea patients experience burning and grittiness of eyes, a common condition known as conjunctivitis. If this condition is not treated, it can lead to more serious eye complications.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE Rosacea

Small red bumps, some of which may contain pus, appear on the face. These may be accompanied by persistent redness and the development of many tiny blood vessels on the surface of the skin. In more advanced cases, a condition called Rhinophyma may develop. The oil glands enlarge causing

bulbos, red nose, and puffy cheeks. Thick bumps may develop on the lower half of the nose and nearby cheeks. Rhinophyma occurs more commonly in men.

WHO IS AT RISK FOR ROSACEA?

Fair skinned adults between the ages of 30 and 50 may develop Rosacea. It affects men and women of any age, and even children. Since it may be associated with menopause, women are affected more often than men and may notice an extreme sensitivity to cosmetics. An occasional embarrassment or a tense moment also may trigger flushing.

TIPS FOR ROSACEA PATIENTS.

• Avoid triggers, including hot drinks, spicy foods, caffeine, and alcoholic beverages that make the face red or flushed. It is important to note that although alcohol may worsen Rosacea, the condition may be just as severe in someone who does not drink at all; thus Rosacea has been unfairly linked to alcoholism.

• Practice good sun protection. Seek shade when possible and limit exposure to sunlight, wear hats and use broad-spectrum sunscreens with SPF of 15 or higher; reapply every 2 hours.

• Avoid extreme hot and cold temperatures which may exacerbate the symptoms of Rosacea. Exercise in a cool environment. Do not allow yourself to overheat.

• Avoid cosmetics and facial products that contain alcohol. Use hair properly, avoiding contact with facial skin.

• Keep a diary of flushing episodes and note associated foods, products, activities, medications or other triggering factors.

COMRADES 2023 HAS A NEW FINISH VENUE

This year’s Comrades Marathon Down Run, scheduled for Sunday, 11 June 2023, will have a different finish as it returns to the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium after a seven-year break.

The world-famous 90km ultramarathon will not end at the Moses Mabhida Stadium (MMS), as has been the case with the 2018 and 2022 Down Runs. This is due to the Comrades race date returning to its traditional date of the second Sunday in June from the previously held August date. In doing so, the traditional June date had already been allocated by MMS to the hosting of the 2023 Cosafa Cup at the landmark venue, thereby necessitating the move.

This Is It - Ziyasha

CMA Race Director, Rowyn James says, “Kingsmead Stadium is our preferred finish venue for this year’s Down Run, as the venue is accustomed to hosting the Comrades Marathon and the revised route should be an ease in transition for the runners. We would like to thank the team at MMS for partnering with CMA during the 2018 and 2022 races and we look forward to hosting our athletes on Sunday, 11 June.”

Head: Stadia and Facilities Unit, Vusi Mazibuko says, “MMS valued its association with the Comrades Marathon as their finish venue of choice during the 2018 and 2022 Comrades Down Runs. This race is not just a proudly KZN event but one of international significance; and it continues to attract the world’s best ultra-runners to our shores and maintain Durban’s status as South Africa’s sporting playground.”

The 96th Comrades Marathon will start at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall at 5h30 and finish 12 hours later at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Sunday, 11 June 2023. This will be the 48th Down Run.

Aries

Transits find you craving experiences or ideas that expand your mind today, dear Aries. Still, there can be a rather tense environment, and disorienting energy is possible. It’s hard to know where to begin to tackle your projects, or you could experience a temporary questioning of what you’re doing and where you’re heading.

Taurus

The Moon spends the day in your sector of shared resources, and you crave a deeper approach or a feeling of connection, dear Taurus. However, it can be difficult to settle on a particular plan with today’s transits. Ultimately, the tension generated now can spur you on and motivate you.

Gemini

With today’s Moon, you’re seeking balance in your life, dear Gemini, and you pay more attention to your relationships. However, Mars in your sign is under a bit of stress today, and others might arouse defensiveness in you, but they might be showing a side of yourself or your unmet needs through your interactions.

Cancer

The Moon spends all day in your solar sector of work and routines, highlighting your daily affairs, dear Cancer. Transits today can pile on some pressure or tension that detracts from productivity, however. You don’t have to ignore your motivation to set things right, but it’s a good idea to do what you can to pace yourself.

Leo

Expressing yourself and sharing can be a strong draw today with the Moon in your solar fifth house, dear Leo. Sensitivity on a social level can lead to quick reactions or moodiness today, however, which can heat things up. Today’s transits seem to encourage sloppy approaches, and you might decide that waiting to address issues is for the best.

Virgo

The desire to bring order or harmony to your personal life is strong today, dear Virgo, but getting over frustrations may not be easy. Allowing them to motivate you to make changes or put an irritating situation behind you can be productive. While clearing the air may seem to be what you need, there’s a tendency to be too defensive to make much progress, so waiting it out may be best.

Libra

You can be attracted to personal interests today, dear Libra, but find it hard to attend to all your needs and desires. Keep in mind that rushing through your tasks will more than likely lead to mistakes and disagreements. Get in better touch with your true desires before taking action. Mars in your solar ninth house finds you seeking opportunities to grow, learn, connect, and improve.

Scorpio

Your needs for comfort and familiarity are stronger than usual today, dear Scorpio, with the Moon in your solar second house all day. Still, it opposes Mars and Mars clashes with Neptune, and tensions can build regarding boundaries, money, power dynamics, or respect.

Sagittarius

Today’s Moon is in your sign, dear Sagittarius, and you’re in the spotlight. Still, differences and problem areas are in stronger focus with today’s temperamental and moody transits. Temporarily, it may not be easy to see around them. You may need to get something off your chest.

Capricorn

The Moon spends all day in your privacy sector, and you’re taking a step back from the usual activity, dear Capricorn. The timing is right with a moody Mars-Neptune square clouding motivation. Remind yourself that you need some breathing room.

Aquarius

The Moon in your social sector can inspire you to seek relaxed and easygoing activities, dear Aquarius. Still, you can feel somewhat restless or unsettled with current transits nudging you to find some inspiration. It would be wise to sort out frustrations first. You may vacillate between wanting to do something independently and hoping for others’ involvement.

Pisces

Transits today can trigger frustrations that are working just under the surface of things, dear Pisces. Ideally, the unrest helps you deal with a problem area, but watch for doing so impatiently. Energy levels may be up and down or unreliable, and timing can be off, and you might crave some guidance, a sign, or a feeling of direction, but you may need more time to see your next step.

THE LUNCHBOX FUND PARTNERS WITH COMMUNITY CHEST

Almost a year ago, the Community Chest received the shocking news that its long-term partnership with a partner donor was to be abruptly ended due to a funding crisis. Desperate measures were put in place to ensure that the Community Chest’s pledge to the ECD centres supported by the Community Chest which collectively enrol over 2,100 children, aged from 3 to 6 years do not go another day without a nutritious breakfast meal. The Community Chest appealed to its other donors as well as to you the public to donate either funds and/or boxes of cereal to keep the pledge alive. And you did! Together, with your support, all of our ECD centres received their allotment of cereal through the entire 2022 school year. Heartfelt appreciation to all of you who so generously responded to our appeals.

In the meanwhile, the Community Chest proactively began to search for another partner to join us on this project and ensure that each child attending one of the Community Chest’s supported ECD centre receives a bowl of nutritious breakfast cereal, fortified with the essential vitamins and micronutrients critical for healthy body and brain development at this key stage of early childhood development.

The Community Chest is thus most pleased to announce a new partnership with the Lunchbox Fund, a national not-for-profit organisation who has agreed to work with the Community Chest to supply the breakfast cereal to all of the ECD centres supported by the Community Chest, beginning March 2023. This is fantastic news and together with the 2,100 plus children, the ECD centre managers and the wider community of Pietermaritzburg and District, we thank the Lunchbox Fund wholeheartedly.

The goal of the Community Chest is to ensure that up to 3,000 children receive a healthy breakfast on each day they attend their ECD centre. Our wish is for our most generous donor community to continue to help us raise the required funding to realise this goal. For as little as R5.00 a day and 200 school days in a year (R1,000.00), the Community Chest can ensure a child will have at least one nutritious meal for the day. Please continue to support this project at the Community Chest.

To find out more about our Breakfast Cereal Project and to support this initiative, contact Sma Sokhela on sma@communitychest.org.za or 033 3941031.
