We live in an age where Mufti’s and Shuyukh have set themselves up as demi-gods. Allah speaks of such scholars who are so full of themselves and proud of their knowledge in the 62nd Sura al-Jumu‘ah (Friday, the Congregation) in verse 4: Like that of a donkey loaded with heavy books on its back. Knowledge is a living dynamic thing that by its nature, must constantly deal with the creative tensions that arise out of intellectual confrontation. We are being confronted intellectually and at every level in our age.
If we do not have individuals who are willing to rise up to the level of this deen and be willing to think deeply about the profound issues of our age, which includes theology, then who are going to guide the masses. We cannot be content with stories about the greatness of our past, but we should be nourished by it and recognize that we come from a proud and great tradition. I use pride in the context of dignity or izzah, which means we are proud to be the slaves of Allah in a state of servitude or ubudiyya. Ilm should not be misunderstood as information.

MariAmman Māri also known as MariAmman and Mariaai or simply Amman or Aatha is the South Indian Hindu Goddess who can take away any kind of illness or disease and a fertility (rain) Goddess. The word Mari has a sangam tamil origin meaning “Rain” and the Dravidian root term Amman meaning “Mother”. She is the main South Indian mother Goddess, predominant in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Māri is closely associated with the Hindu Goddesses Parvati and Durga. Goddess MariAmman and Goddess Kali are closely associated with each other. Festivities for her happen during the late summer, early autumm season of "Aadi". Throughout the deccan region, a grand festival known as "Aadi Thiruvizha" are taken for MaariAmman. Her worship mainly focuses on bringing rains and curing diseases like cholera, smallpox, and chicken pox. She is usually taken in procession in a decorated chariot. MariAmman is an ancient Goddess, whose worship probably originated from pre-Vedic mother of Dravidian people before the arrival of the Aryans with their Brahmanic religion. " She was believed and worshipped by the ancient Dravidian people to bring rain and hence prosperity to them as their vegetation was mainly dependent upon rain. The Goddess was not a local deity, connected to a specific location but worshiped throughout the Dravidian nation. The worshiping methods are non-vedic and often accompanied by various kinds of folk dancing. Offerings such as Pongal and Koozh that were cooked using earthen pots were also made during the festive season. Rituals such as fire walking and mouth or nose piercing were also practiced.

18 July celebrates the birthday of Nelson Mandela, famously known in our country as Madiba or Tata. Not only did Madiba fight for the freedom of all black people in this country and win, but he also stood for peace, reconciliation and unity. When he was elected as president, it was never about over powering other races, abuse of power as head of state or discrimination. Instead, he worked hard for unity of all people and races. Making South Africa a rainbow nation. Although Madiba and Former President FW De Klerk, negotiated to end the apartheid regime, resulting in the first multi racial general elections in 1994, where Madiba was elected as president, it is still a far cry compared to the 67 years he spent fighting for the freedom of the people. There were many obstacles that Madiba had to overcome in order to have racial equality in South Africa. There are not enough words to describe the physical pain, suffering, torture and emotional scars that he had to bear in his struggle for us all. Although enduring and persevering through this all had made him an incredibly strong leader. Yet the most amazing qualities he possessed was that of love, peace, humility, patience, tolerance and most importantly forgiveness to all those who wronged him. In our efforts to remember and celebrate such an amazing selfless humanitarian South Africans all over the country practice servitude for at least 67 minutes every year on the 18 of July, be it feeding the hungry, donations of some sort, or even cleaning a community area. People make the effort to do some kind of selfless service for 67 minutes to commemorate the 67 years Madiba fought for the freedom of this nation. Gender-based violence is violence directed against a person because of their gender. Both women and men experience gender-based violence but the majority of victims are women and girls. Victims of violence can suffer sexual and reproductive health consequences including unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, sexually transmitted diseases and even death.
How can we stop violence?
1) I f you are the victim or a witness to violence, tell someone 2) Take all violence and abuse seriously 3) Take a stand 4) R emember putting others down does not raise you up 5) Be a friend.
To echo the President’s sentiments, brand South Africa pleads with communities across the country to continue to play their part by unwaveringly calling out and reporting abusers, supporting victims and educating community members. The President has also called for harsher sentences for perpetrators. The silence on violence against women and children has been broken and now is the time for stronger action. A victim of violence must have confidence that when she files a police report, she will receive justice and the perpetrator will be punished. Let us commit today to continually in our day to day lives challenge ourselves to raise awareness and stand against gender-based violence.

WHO IS THE CREATOR AND WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF HIS CREATION? In light of all the natural disasters happening around the world, racial, political and even religious turmoil & conflicts is being fuelled by man’s resentment, anger and hatred towards one another. Wars been waged against the innocent and defenceless that have simply become ‘collateral damage’ for the sole purpose of gaining more power and geographical territory and superiority over another. Human depravity, moral perversion and the lack of ethical virtues which have become the order of the day, it might be fair to ask the question, where is God in all of this and what has become of His creation? Violence, corruption, death and destruction permeates like rotting flesh across our very own nation and hangs like a dark cloud of condemnation, judgement and persecution that obscures the light of God’s glory, mercy and grace. So in order to answer or analyse these difficult questions, we need to go back into the historical references of biblical Truth to find a ‘common ground’ that speaks of similar values and principles which merit the consideration of compassion, peace, integrity and generosity. This is precisely why we find it so difficult to find a solution to our daily problems and needs. It is no different from having a believer, atheist and agnostic sit around a table trying to find the answers to who and what created heaven and earth—when certain parties cannot agree on the very existence of One Creator. Our moral sense of existence and the quest for meaning in this life are core parts of the whole purpose of our existence. What it means to be human and to rely on our heavenly, Holy and merciful God, is the very foundation to solving the problems in the world today. But unless we come to that place of accepting that we need more than ourselves to solve this problem, we are going nowhere fast. For those who have lost their religious and spiritual virtues and core of existence or never had one, will find the concept of ‘divine’ intervention for a Godly resolution almost impossible because their lives revolve around themselves rather than a Creator. It is therefore critical if not imperative that we come to the realisation that—in order to lift the cloud of darkness and condemnation off this nation, we need to know and understand who our Creator is and what His original purpose was in forming and shaping His Creation from the beginning of time.
The Bible has much more to say concerning the Person behind our creation and God’s purpose for creating us. The Bible repeatedly reveals to us a God wanting to have a close, intimate relationship with mankind. From the creation of man in the “image of God” (described in Genesis), to the Law given to Moses; to the beckoning of the prophets to return to God and finally to the coming of the Messiah to bring the gift of salvation, we see a more personal God reaching out to us throughout Scripture wanting to have fellowship with His creation. It’s the very lack of this fellowship with God where the wheels have come off between the Creator and His creation. Man has—instead of developing this relationship, turned his back on God and His virtues. The creation accounts in Scripture cannot be disassociated from the purpose God had in creating the universe since this central message permeates Scripture. The first chapter of Genesis describes God in a plural sense, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness...’” [1]. Some beliefs would want to dispute this fact but we cannot deny the oracles of God’s Truth that are breathed into life by the divine intervention of His Holy Spirit. The New Testament goes to great lengths to identify Jesus Christ as God Himself, One with God the Father, present at creation, sent in the form of a human and the One who will establish the new heavens and the new earth. Although it is humanly difficult to understand how this can be true, there will always be things about the nature and character of God which are beyond our human understanding. We must therefore accept the claims of Christ—not on the basis of what we can fully understand or see, but on the basis of our faith in Him. John 1:3 clearly states, “All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” We are called upon to acknowledge Him as the author of creation and the only way to our salvation. As such, He is the rightful heir to all worship and praise. I conclude that both Scripture as well as the testimony of the heavens are giving us clear and decisive indicators that—in order for us to restore law and order on this earth, we need to first acknowledge God as our Creator, repent of our sin and turn from our wicked ways. Finally, we need to build a relationship with Jesus Christ.
