So you know, submission to me is, I mean, we have this thing called Islam which has become a world religion and it identifies a category of people. But my understanding of Islam is that it’s much deeper than that. It’s really a state of being. It’s not a sociological identity. It’s a state of being and that’s why the Quran says: Aslama man fis samaa waate wal ard. That everything in the heavens and earth is in that state of submission.

That it is a state the trees are in, the sun is in, the moon is in and the human be ings, because we have been given free will, we have this ability to be outside of that state.

The Chinese spoke about it, they call it The Way, being in The Way, the way of nature and the ancients were very clear about that and modern man, you know, I mean one of the hallmarks of modernity is how out of sync we are.

HAIR LOSS

ALOPECIA AREATA (AA) causes hair loss in small round patches that may go away on their own, or may last for many years. Nearly 2% of the U.S. population (about four million people) will develop AA in their lifetime. Some people with AA (about 5%) may lose all scalp hair (alopecia totalis) or all scalp and body hair (alopecia universalis). The immune system, for unknown reasons, attack the hair root and causes hair loss.

WHO GETS AA?

AA occurs world-wide in both genders and in every ethnic group. Children and young adults are most frequently affected, but persons of all ages are susceptible. One in five persons with AA has a family member who also has the disease.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF AA?

AA usually begins with one or more small, round, coin-size, bare patches. It is most common on the scalp, but can involve other hair-bearing sites, including eyebrows, eyelashes, and beards. Hair may fall out and re-grow with the possibility of full hair re-growth always present. AA usually has no associated symptoms, but there may be minor discomfort for itching prior to developing a new patch. Nails may have tiny pinpoint dents and may rarely become distorted.

WHAT CAUSES AA?

AA is not contagious. It is an auto-immune disease in which the body's immune system attacks itself, in this case, the hair follicles. The cause is not known. A person's particular genetic makeup combined with other factors triggers AA.

WHAT TESTS ARE DONE TO CONFIRM AA?

Although your dermatologist may know by examining your scalp that you have AA, occasionally, a scalp biopsy is helpful in confirming the diagnosis.

IS THIS A SYMPTOM OF A SERIOUS DISEASE?

AA is not a symptom of a serious disease and usually occurs in otherwise healthy individuals. Persons with AA may have a higher risk of atopic eczema, asthma, and nasal allergies as well as other autoimmune disease such as thyroid disease (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), and vitligo. Family members may also have atopic eczema asthma, nasal allergies, or auto-immune diseases (i.e. insulin-dependent diabetes rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disease, or systemic lupus erythematosus).

WILL THE HAIR GROW BACK?

Yes, it is likely that the hair may re-grow, but it may fall out again. The course of the disease varies from person to person, and no one can predict when the hair might re-grow or fall off again. This unpredictable nature of AA, and the lack of control over it, makes this condition frustrating. Some people lose a few patches of hair, the hair re-grows, and the condition never returns. Other people continue to lose and re-grow hair for many years. The potential for full re-growth is always there, even in people who lose all the hair on their scalp and body (alopecia totalis/unversalis). Hair could re-grow white or fine, but the original hair colour and texture may return later.

Whatever happened, happened for the good. Whatever is happening, is happening for the good. Whatever will happen, will also happen for the good.

So get over it. Whatever you’re sulking about, forget it. The job interview that didn’t go well, or the relationship that didn’t work was bound to happen and it happened. Everything happens for a reason. There is a reason you’re going through a bad phase and there is a reason you might be basking in glory - it’s a cycle and you need to quietly accept it. You need not worry about the future, nor should you pay attention to the past. You only have control over the present, so live it to the fullest.

You have the right to work, but never to the fruit of work.

‘Karm karo, phal ki chinta mat karo’ is the wisest message the Bhagwad Gita gives us. Today, we are working only for money, a better house, a car, and for a secure future. We are so goaldriven, that we do everything only on thinking about the results. For instance, we all work extra hours during our appraisal time, thinking that our bosses will rate us highly on our performance evaluation. This is something we need to avoid. Only because, if expectations are not met, pain is inevitable. Therefore, keep working and don’t expect anything in return.

Change is the law of the universe. You can be a millionaire, or a pauper in an instant.

How true! Nothing is permanent in our lives. The earth keeps revolving, it does not stay stable; the day ends and the night follows; after humid summers follow relieving monsoons. This reinforces the fact that impermanence is the law of the universe. Therefore being proud of your wealth is a sign of immaturity, because it can vanish into thin air in a minute. Accepting change makes you coherent enough to face any tough situations in your life.

The soul is neither born, and nor does it die, We can achieve nothing if fear is instilled within us.

Fear kills ambition, dreams and even the slight chances of progress. A fearless soul has nothing to worry about, because it knows it cannot be caged, and nor can it be stopped. Thus, the fear of death is absurd, as our souls don’t die. Fear and worry are two enemies, that are deterrents to our well-being. We must strive to eradicate them from our minds completely.

Egg-less Banana Bread

Preheat oven to 160degrees Celsius

Ingredients:

* Half a cup of oil

* Half a cup of brown sugar

* Half a cup of milk to which add a teaspoon of Bicarbonate of soda, mix well.

* A teaspoon of baking powder

* 4 ripe Bananas (mashed well)

* A cup of chopped up pecan nuts or walnuts

* 2 cups of sifted cake flour.

Method :

Add the oil, sugar, milk with Bicarbonate of soda to a mixing bowl and mix well.

Add baking powder and mix well. Add the mashed Bananas and chopped walnuts. Mix well. Fold in the sifted cake flour until well combined.

Pour into lined muffin tins( half way) and bake at 160degrees Celsius for 20 minutes. Use a loaf pan and baked the cake for approximately 45 to 50 minutes in an 160 degrees Celsius oven.

FULFILMENT IN THE PRESENT

Keynote Scripture: “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11

It is the dream of every believer to be TRULY HAPPY and feel excited about life. The ‘Health and Wealth’ (Prosperity) Gospel has devolved into a gospel of “ wish fulfilment.” Apostle Paul writes, “If our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world” (1 Cor. 15:19).

As Christians, we need to believe God when He promises to work everything for our good that happens to us both in our lives and in our souls. Unfortunately, what does happen in reality is that we cling to the ‘ false hope’ that the ‘ultimate’ happiness and joy we were created to experience is available here and now that ‘hope’ can become a narcissistic, obsessive quest for the spiritual fulfilment we assume we are entitled to. When we do that we deny the truth that our deepest desire of fully felt union with God largely remains unsatisfied. The shattering of our deepest dream of “fulfilment in the present” becomes the unexpected pathway to genuine happiness.

God truly wants to bless us (Jer 32:40 41). As His beloved children, there is never a moment in all our lives when God is not longing to bless us. At every moment, in every circumstance, God is doing us good. He never stops. It gives Him great pleasure to see us succeed and to see us happy and content. God is not waiting to bless us after our troubles end or once we have succeeded. This is and would be false teaching to believe that God only rewards those who do good and curses those who do bad.

He is blessing us right now, in and through our troubles and shattered dreams. He is giving us what He knows is good … though we do not always agree. Our problem is that we are not yet fully aware or maybe not fully convinced I’m not sure which it is, that an “ intimate relationship with God” is that greatest pleasure, it is the ultimate feeling of contentment and happiness. In our foolishness we look for that experience in all the wrong places. We dig “ broken cisterns” to satisfy our thirst and walk right by the fresh spring of living water that is God. The Bible says in Jeremiah 2:13 “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, ‘broken cisterns’ that cannot hold water.”

An encounter with God is what we really want and need we just don’t know it yet. We dream “ lower dreams” and lesser expectations because we don’t believe we have the power or ability to achieve the ‘higher’ ones. We dream of good marriages, talented kids, health and money to enjoy life, rewarding work and for some strange reason, we think we will find these things ‘in the world.’ We ignore the fact that we could achieve these things and more, if only we had God in our lives, or maybe for some I should say, “more of God” in our lives. That is what God means when He calls us “ foolish.” The greatest blessing is not the blessing of a “good life,” it is the blessing of an encounter with God.

We don’t see things that way; we almost always mistake lesser pleasures for the greater pleasure of this world and live our lives chasing after them, so God goes to work to help us see more clearly. One way He works is to allow our free will to dictate the outcome of our circumstances at times. At such moments in our lives, the Holy Spirit will use the pain and suffering we endure to help us discover our desire for God. He leads us into the depths of our being, into the center of our soul where we feel our strongest passions. It is there that we discover our desire for God. Shattered dreams, trials and suffering are not accidents of fate; they are ordained opportunities for the Spirit to awaken us to our ’highest dream an encounter with God. Through the pain of shattered dreams, we wake up to the realisation that we want an encounter with God more than we want the blessings of life. Our shattered dreams (suffering, pain, trials, challenges, etc.) are an opportunity to be embraced, a chance to discover our desire for the highest blessing God wants to give us, an encounter with Himself.

God told Apostle Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in WEAKNESS” (2 Cor. 12:9). We want God to give us power/victory over our weaknesses and troubles...but God normally gives us the power/grace to endure them. God gave Paul a significant weakness (great suffering) to keep him humble. Man is prone to becoming proud when things are only positive; so God gives us weakness (suffering) to humble us [think about that for a moment] difficult humbling trials serve to make us more like Christ. Paul’s thorn in the flesh was a constant humbling presence of some painful suffering. Humility is far more important than our comfort . It is not in victory that we are made more like Christ, but in difficulty, trial, and suffering. Amen.

Dear Patron of the Community Chest, This newsletter serves to alert you to some exciting developments taking place at the Community Chest. Post the Covid-19 pandemic, the world as we knew it has changed in many ways, some of it forever! We are having to re-invent ourselves in order to remain relevant to the changed context.

Most heartening however is the fact that despite of the Covid-19 pandemic and the social unrest in July 2021, the spirit of charitable giving remains steadfast. We are truly blessed then as a community which continues to love and care for one another.

We wish to draw your attention to 2 NEW and exciting developments that are underway at the Community Chest. Both of which, we hope, will better reflect the Community Chest’s desire to appreciate all of our donors, big and small.

Now licenced to conduct public fund-raising activities

As of September 2022, the Community Chest has obtained a licence (Reg. No. 00397) from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC), allowing us to raise funds for our work in the public domain, using competitions which offer rewards/prizes.

We are in the midst of piloting our very first ever public Lucky Draw Competition. For a mere R5.00, you stand the chance to win one of 3 cash prizes!

We are encouraging all businesses and corporates to assist their employees/staff to benefit from this initiative by obtaining one or more books of tickets ( each book holds 100 tickets). 2) Launch of the Charitable Workers’ Club

Come April 2023, we are launching our Charitable Workers’ Club. The idea for the Club is based on our existing Workplace Giving programme.

Workplace Giving is where employees/staff at various corporates, businesses, factories and SMME’s donate on a weekly or monthly basis to the Community Chest via the payroll system or by debit order authorisation. Workplace Giving has been going on for many, many years. However, until now, the Community Chest had very little opportunity to express our appreciation to these loyal supporters in little (and big) ways.

The launch of the Charitable Workers’ Club will provide Community Chest with an appropriate mechanism by which we can communicate better with our employee/staff donors as well as appreciate them with rewards, as the opportunities allow. The Charitable Workers’ Club is NOT replacing the Workplace Giving programme.

The Club is just an extension of Workplace Giving AND joining the Club is OPTIONAL

Existing contributors to Workplace Giving who donate R5.00/ week or more or R20.00/month or more can join by simply completing a Membership Form. There are no added costs –just opportunity for more rewards from your charitable giving. In order to encourage existing contributors to join the Club, as well as invite new contributors, all signed up Club members up to 31 March 2023, will automatically be entered in the Club’s Launch Lucky Draw Competition. There is no extra charge for entry into the competition.
