uerto Rico has positioned itself in recent years as one of the world’s jurisdictions with the best credit, in terms of its population. And, while recent industry reports point to a slight increase in credit card use for the first quarter of 2022 in Puerto Rico, the amount of arrears in credit card payments has remained “normal,” according to Rodney Curbelo, general manager of the consumer credit reporting agency TransUnion-Puerto Rico.
The increase in credit card use coincides with the spiraling inflation, a global trend that has been severely affecting economies since the beginning of the year. Puerto Rico has been following that trend. In its recent Credit Market Trends report (which includes banks in the U.S.) TransUnion reported the average credit card balance decreased last year. However, the report shows an 11.6% increment in the average balance through March 2022, when compared to its lowest point in June 2021. GO TO PAGE 4
