The Significance of Our Teacher Education Programme by Dr. John Wright, Dean of Academic Affair In one of his calypsos 'Chalkdust' makes a distinction between two types of Calypsonians: those who, 'hot and sweaty', jump up on stage to sing without any serious preparation, and those who, realising that 'Calypso' is truly an art, spend time mastering that art, before it is presented to an audience. The former he refers to as 'Quacks', the latter, of course, would be thought of as 'Professionals' .

In order to ensure that our audiences (i.e our students) are serviced by professional teachers, the H. L. Stoutt Conununity College, has instituted a teacher education programme to prepare teachers for the primary school system. Officially started in October 1992, this programme caters to two groups of students: those who can attend on a fulltime basis, and practising teachers who take classes on a part-time basis. Students entering the teacher education programme with four or more CXC subjects, at General Proficiency (Grade 1 or 2) level, can complete the programme in two (2) years on a full-time basis. Part-time students with the minimum entry qu$fications, should be able to do so in three and one half years. Our teacher education programme is somewhat unique in the way it is structured. It is designed to satisfy the University of the West Indies requirements for certification, while at the same time provide. the opportunity for the student to obtain from our college, an Associate Degree in
Education. This dual focus of our teacher education programme offers more than a useful challenge to a student. It offers a very attractive option to the serious and ambitious student, who sees it as a logical step towards the Bachelor's Degree in Education.
Dr. John Wright
Unlike other Associate Degree Programmes at the College, the teacher education programme provides for the academic as well as the professional development of the student. Any student, therefore, who earns an Associate Degree in Education from the H. L. Stoutt Community College should be able to function effectively, at least within the elementary school system anywhere in the English Speaking Caribbean. Any Country that is serious about nation-building must, of necessity, ensure a continuous supply of a cadre of professionally prepared teachers. Continued on page 2
