Mary McLeod Bethune & the Six Triple Eight

Mary McLeod Bethune, a formidable force in American history, was a humanitarian, educator, and civil rights advocate who reshaped the narrative of opportunity and equality for African Americans Among her many accomplishments, Bethune played a pivotal role in supporting the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black, all-female unit that served heroically in World War II. ADVOCATING FOR THE 6888

In The Six Triple Eight, Oprah Winfrey portrays Mary McLeod Bethune with a gravitas that mirrors Bethune’s real-life dedication. Alongside Susan Sarandon as Eleanor Roosevelt, the film delves into the profound friendship between Bethune and the First Lady. Together, the pair lobbied President Franklin D. Roosevelt (played by Sam Waterston) to overcome military resistance to deploying Black female soldiers. Their persistence led to the formation of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, a unit tasked with clearing an overwhelming backlog of undelivered mail in Europe a critical mission to sustain troop morale during the war.

Tyler Perry’s drama highlights the battalion’s leader, Maj. Charity Adams (played by Kerry Washington), and Pvt. Lena Derriecott King (portrayed by Ebony Obsidian), among others. These women exemplified courage and determination, defying both racial prejudice and the rigors of wartime service to accomplish their mission. The film’s nuanced portrayal of their struggles and triumphs reveals the importance of Bethune’s advocacy in their historic journey.

THE FORMATION OF THE WOMEN’S ARMY CORPS

During the early years of World War II, Bethune was already a prominent national figure, serving as the president of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) Recognizing the potential for African American women to contribute to the war effort, Bethune championed their inclusion in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), which later became the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) Her influence extended to the Aframerican Women’s Journal, the NCNW’s official publication, which highlighted the contributions of WAACs and urged readers to support them through letters and care packages

Bethune’s efforts went beyond publicity. She personally inspected training camps, including the one in Des Moines, Iowa, where she ensured the women received proper living conditions and encouragement Bethune’s commitment to these women resonated deeply, as noted by attorney and veteran Dovey Johnson Roundtree, who recalled Bethune’s inspirational visits: “She gathered her girls about her and reminded us of our place in history ”

OVERCOMING BARRIERS

The 6888th Battalion faced daunting challenges Shipped to Birmingham, England, in early 1945, the women encountered warehouses filled with undelivered mail a backlog of over 17 million letters and packages The task was monumental, but the women’s meticulous organization and unyielding work ethic enabled them to clear the backlog in just three months, far ahead of schedule

A SUPERHERO SCIENTIST

PRESENTING DR. KIMBERLY SOUFFRONT

Kimberly Souffront, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, FAAN, is a trailblazer in the nursing and medical field. Dr. Souffront, or “Kim” as loved ones call her, describes herself as a scientist, health equity advocate, emergency nurse practitioner, hypertension researcher, and a loving wife and mom of four children. She is indeed all that and so much more. Dr. Souffront met with me to share the story of her remarkable journey.

Dr Kimberly Souffront grew up in Westbury, Nassau County, New York, in a suburb about 25 miles outside of New York City Raised in a loving family with parents who immigrated from Jamaica, she is the xxxxxxxxx

second eldest of four siblings Her mother is a Director of Nursing for a nearby healthcare system, while her father has been a mechanic for over 50 years and is the longtime owner of an automotive shop specializing in foreign cars in the city.

As an emergency trained Nurse Practitioner, Dr Souffront’s research interests include hypertension and health disparities Her research aims to achieve health equity and eliminate disparities related to hypertension health outcomes in emergency department patients with asymptomatic hypertension.

Dr Souffront credits her personal and professional success to her parents and siblings Her parents laid the foundation by demonstrating a strong work ethic and high expectations of their children Dr Souffront’s parents have been married for 49 years, and raised exceptional children, including her older brother, a surgeon in Brooklyn, and her younger sister an anesthesiologist in Los Angeles Dr Souffront’s younger brother unfortunately passed away in a car accident in 2004

Dr. Souffront notes that her parents’ sacrifices motivated their children to make their parents proud She explains, “family and education are highly valued in my family My dad worked very long hours at the shop to provide for us so that we could have a good education My mom also expected us to be well-rounded and cultured You need to know not just books, but also participate in sports, scouts, and other activities that gave us structure and kept us busy as kids And if we weren’t busy, we would be doing chores around the house” xxx

Her older brother taught her resilience, “he taught me to expect challenges as a part of life and to overcome them, to persevere” From her younger sister, she learned the importance of charting one’s own path to do what you want to do and not to fear what other people think She adds, “Do what works for you and what you’re passionate about.”

With her mother being a nurse, a grandmother who was a midwife and nurse, a godmother who was a nurse practitioner, and several cousins who were physicians, Dr Souffront was exposed to the medical field at an early age. Dr. Souffront does not recall if or when she made a conscious decision to pursue nursing, but looking back she can see many reasons why she landed in the profession

Becoming a nurse was just a natural progression, as a compassionate person who was also good at math and science, Dr. Souffront seemed destined for a future in nursing She also wanted to do something that she would be remembered for, “People always remember how you made them feel Nurses can be so significant in someone’s life when they’re at their most vulnerable, when they’re in the hospital, when they’re sick -- I knew I wanted to make a difference in that aspect”

She was impressed by the immense impact that nurses have in patient care and generating new knowledge and science, how to impact policy, and how to improve overall health care delivery

Dr. Souffront’s stellar nursing career is punctuated by a dual appointment as Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Faculty of the Institute for Health Equity Research at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai She also serves as the Associate Director of the Center for Nursing Research and Innovation for the Mount Sinai Health System xxxxx

Dr. Souffront is the co-founder and coEditor in Chief of Practical Implementation of Nursing Science (PINS), an open access, peer-reviewed journal for nurses engaged in clinical practice The mission of PINS is to provide a forum for nurses working in clinical settings to rapidly disseminate findings from evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and research projects that facilitate translation of knowledge into practice. PINS also seeks to highlight diverse perspectives.

PINS, now in its second year of publication, fills a critical clinical gap that clinically enables nurses around the country to disseminate their innovative practices She shared, “nurses don’t go through a research residency block like doctors As a result, we often just don’t know how to do it. So as nurses we feel like we don’t have the time, we aren’t writing, we are intimidated, we find the process cumbersome”

PINS keeps access to the online publication free and open to all, “We wanted to make sure the journal was affordable and geared towards the clinical nurse because we are with the patients all the time. We don’t want this crucial and timely information stuck behind a paywall or subscription,” adds Dr Souffront

Dr Souffront’s career includes fellowships of the New York Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Nursing She was recognized as Nurse Researcher of the Year from the Greater New York Black Nurses Association in 2020 and in 2021, and recognized as one of the top ten nurse scientists across the nation to receive significant funding and leadership support from the Betty Irene and Gordon Moore Foundation She received the 2024 Estelle Osborne Legacy Award honoring the first Black faculty member at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing, for advancing equity in the profession

Dr Souffront is living proof that nontraditional nursing careers are possible She emphasized, “nurses can be nurse practitioners, they can teach, they can do research and so much more”

Mentors have played an important role in Dr Souffront’s accomplishments Some mentors she found organically and others she sought out For individuals seeking a mentor, she recommends “don’t be afraid to send someone a cold email And if you don’t get a response, send another email Be proactive And once you do connect, make the relationship meaningful by nurturing it, otherwise it won’t mature Every strong relationship requires work on both sides”

On mentorship, Dr Souffront warns, “don’t make it transactional, like ‘I really want to meet you because you can help me do this” She believes a good mentee builds up the friendship keeping their mentor in the loop on their personal and professional life She suggests that mentees do what it takes to follow through on a mentor’s advice, “they are saying it for a reason, they are where they are for a reason, they are busy and giving you their valuable time, so be sure to act afterwards”

Dr Souffront has been married to her husband Ramon for 14 years She and Ramon met when she was starting out as a PhD student She notes he has been in the trenches with her ever since, “He was there xxxxxxx

from the start, with the craziness of the PhD, the post-doc and all the academic challenges along the way He is so proud of me; he truly celebrates my successes We have grown so much together” The couple have four children together: a twelve-yearold daughter, nine-year-old twins (son and daughter), and a younger daughter who is two-and-a-half years old Her children excel academically and are active in swimming, soccer and ice hockey

Dr Souffront feels immense gratitude when she sees her children being kind, inclusive, and resilient Dr Souffront says, “all of their little successes make me proud every single time.”

When asked what tips she has for other working parents, she quotes Shonda Rhimes’ 2014 commencement speech at Dartmouth, ‘How do you do it all?’ She responded “the answer is this: I don’t Whenever you see me somewhere succeeding in one area of my life, that almost certainly means I am failing in another area of my life.” She relates to this sentiment, that often something has to give “Maybe I successfully applied for a grant, but I also missed a lesson, a practice or an important game for one of my kids Dr Souffront chooses to “recognize that nothing is ever perfect, and you can’t do it all Be okay with dishes in the sink and toys all over the place, it’ll work its way out”

Dr. Souffront recalls that there were many days in her early career where she went 24 hours without seeing her children It was a challenging time, but she reminded herself that it was a temporary trade off and that she was making those sacrifices for a reason “There were times I had to wake up early for a 12-hour shift in the city, and then wait overnight for hours to take the train home and that was just really, really hard for me.”

As an emergency nurse practitioner and researcher, Dr Souffront is passionate about the issue of asymptomatic hypertension While normal blood pressure , XXXXXXX

measures at less than 120 over 80 asymptomatic hypertension is defined as high blood pressure that measures above normal, but the person experiencing it will not feel it because there are no obvious symptoms. “This is why we call high blood pressure the silent killer,” she explained.

In the emergency department, Dr Souffront has witnessed too many patients showing up for treatment of an issue, usually unrelated to their high blood pressure, but then being discharged without their elevated blood pressure being adequately addressed Sometimes this is a mistake on the emergency department’s behalf, because they assume the elevated blood pressure resulted from the stress and anxiety that can accompany an emergency department visit Dr Souffront believes that patients’ blood pressure should usually be measured twice during emergency visits, and if the patient’s numbers are still high after the second reading, the patient may already be experiencing chronic hypertension, a long term but treatable condition. Dr. Souffront adds, “about half the people in the world have high blood pressure, so even if you are not one of those people, it is very likely that someone you know or love is”

The problem with not having adequate treatment or follow up of chronic hypertension in the emergency department is that it leads to worse outcomes for patients When asked what advice she can give to help improve cardiovascular health, Dr Souffront emphasized that lifestyle carries much more weight than the role of genes or DNA when it comes to having high blood pressure She recommends stress reduction, getting good sleep, improving diet, regularly exercising, avoiding salt, and smoking cessation to optimize your heart health Moreover, Dr Souffront suggests that everyone go to their health care provider at least once per year to be screened for their blood pressure, cholesterol, and A1C (a marker for diabetes)

xxxx

Over the years Dr Souffront has seen many patients who are afraid of medication She wants patients to know that medication improves outcomes and saves lives “Medication may not be long term so don’t be afraid to start it. The longer you wait to start the medication the more stress you put on your heart, kidney and other organs

The more you put yourself at risk for a health crisis”

Dr Souffront is an ardent advocate for reducing the health disparities that she has witnessed in her career since her first hospital job at age 17 “The widespread disparities that I’ve observed in clinical practice were the catalyst for my research.”

xxxx

African Americans seek care in the emergency department much more frequently than Whites They also have poorer outcomes resulting from high blood pressure compared to other populations According to Dr Souffront, roughly 80% of visits to the emergency department are not acute. She has valiantly worked to improve outcomes for African American patients and for all patients who visit the emergency department She is seeking to understand the comprehensive picture regarding access to quality care

Dr Souffront unwinds by spending quality time with her family She is fortunate to be surrounded by foodies “Growing up in a Jamaican household, I ate all the traditional things: banana and saltfish (I never liked ackee), jerk chicken, rice and peas, curry goat, stew peas and stew chicken”

While her mother’s homemade cuisine is her favorite, she is also a fan of her husband’s cooking and says her sister is also an excellent cook “As a family, we don’t eat out a lot. My husband is a great cook. I love his empanadas,” Dr. Souffront gushes When it comes to wine, Dr Souffront describes herself as a red person “I like Cabernet Sauvignon and my usual go to is a Kendall Jackson”

NAVIGATING MULTI-FAMILY OWNERSHIP OF A VACATION HOME

Reminiscing about last summer’s travel to favorites like Martha’s Vineyard and Highland Beach, brings to mind the conversations that must be had about essential estate planning for the family vacation home perhaps it’s a ski lodge or maybe it’s a beachfront property.

At its core, estate planning for this type of property, as with many other types of assets, is how to keep it in the family (or the close friend group if relevant), and to do so managing it fairly through the generations with little to no drama

These assets are quite different from others Fractional shares can get quite messy to manage, and may lack the simplicity of dividing an investment account among heirs.

Considerations

In addition to keeping the property in good habitable order for at least two or more generations, there could be nostalgic value for extended family, who may one day share the use of the property equitably For second or third homes, subsequent generations may own proportionally divided interests

In cases where two families own together, they should establish an agreement to share expenses and to create a mechanism for one family to buy the other out in the event of a death, or another contingency plan. The agreement should contemplate what might happen through subsequent generations X

If one family, and the property now or in the future will be owned by multiple generations, sound estate planning involves structuring the transfer from one generation to the next, possibly for multiple generations, and allowing all to continue to use it as a family gathering place to reconnect. But, should that use be restricted to a vacation home, exclusively, or should it also be income-generating through rentals to pay for expenses that will develop over time?

Questions to Contemplate

How will it be determined who can use the property and when they can use it?

Who will be responsible for upkeep and repair, and how can the owners fairly share property taxes and other expenses?

How many family members from each owner-family will serve as the liaison to the group?

Considering the fact that various children and grandchildren, as well as their spouses, will have greater or lesser degrees of attachment to the property and will be more or less able to manage their fair share financially, how can those who no longer want an interest in the vacation home depart or, in the case of irreconcilable circumstances, how might they be forced out legally?

Family dynamics can also come into play for example one spouse may ,XxxxX

have children from a prior marriage differences of opinion within an ownerfamily, disinherited or estranged members’ claims to own and operate, and so on

This article will focus on three approaches to planning for the multifamily vacation home: (a) a tenancy in common subject to an ownership agreement, (b) an irrevocable trust, and (c) a limited liability company

a) Default Tenancy in Common with an Ownership Agreement

To fully illustrate ownership as tenants in common, let’s assume both parents have already died without adequate planning Therefore, a tenancy in common among several children or grandchildren, or several trusts for their benefit, may have been formed

Despite this less than ideal situation where the unique qualities and challenges of ownership of the family vacation home have not been outlined sufficiently, negotiating a written agreement among the co-tenants, which would be binding on their successors in interest, could offer just the relief necessary to organize ownership for current and future circumstances

Such an agreement should include details for the following, at a minimum:

Who may occupy the property and when;

Whether use by guests of a co-tenant or by short-term renters is allowed, and the relevant parameters guiding their use;

List of anticipated necessary repairs, maintenance, and improvements, as well as a policy for sharing the expenses, and how to navigate agreement on such;

Procedures for payment of property taxes and other recurring expenses and the establishment of a budget for such;

Methodology for resolving disagreements about these matters, possibly through mediation or arbitration;

Buy/sell plan for the transferability of each co-tenant’s interest that determines the price at which the others might buy out the interest of a co-tenant who might want to sell; and others might buy out the interest of a co-tenant who might want to sell; and

Strategies for avoiding the necessity of a partition in the event of the death, divorce, or bankruptcy of a co-tenant, or in the event a co-tenant’s creditor asserts a lien on the co-tenant’s interest

While the better plan is to put these mechanisms in place before the surviving parent dies, an agreement subsequent is the next best option

b) Preparing an Irrevocable Trust

If the original owner's parents are still living, or at least one surviving parent is living, he or she should consider placing the property in an irrevocable trust A wellcrafted trust document would expressly plan around all of the vulnerabilities of ownership by default as tenancy in common to include: XXXX

Designating decision-making authority to fewer than all of the interested parties, perhaps one representative from each owner-family, and specify successors are determined; Adding spendthrift provisions that would prevent a creditor (including a divorced spouse) of any beneficiary from attaching an interest in the trust; and

Providing for a succession of interests through multiple generations, which effectively plans for the relevant state’s rule against perpetuities (a legal rule that prevents people from controlling the ownership of private property for too long after their deaths that requires property be released from a trust after a certain period of time)

When establishing such a trust, one should be mindful to include an endowment of sorts, perhaps in the form of insurance proceeds pointed to the trust to be invested over the years, in an amount of the anticipated, reasonable costs of maintaining the property xxxxxx

Furthermore, note the importance of including your financial advisor and tax planning advisor (an accountant or CPA experienced in lifelong as well as annual tax planning and not merely filing) during the planning and administration periods Current earnings on the endowment and realized capital gains on the sale of securities would be taxed to the trust If income is being realized in any significant amounts to a non-grantor trust, tax will be incurred at the top marginal rate

There are additional tax planning considerations, namely estate and gift taxes related to the parent’s retained interest in the property unless the trust is structured to sever those ties to qualify as a completed gift A qualified personal residence trust (QPRT) may be used not only for the transferor’s principal residence, but also for one other residence the vacation home.

c) Establishing a Limited Liability Company

Another alternative is to place title to the vacation home in a limited liability company (LLC) with voting and nonvoting interests An LLC offers considerably greater flexibility than the other options, as well as greater protection against potential claims against individual members than tenancy in common ownership. With potential liability for damages arising from the use of the property limited to the assets of the LLC itself, a judgment creditor of an individual member will be limited to a charging order, which would entitle the creditor to receive distributions that would otherwise be made to the member, if any If properly structured, the creditor could not obtain even nonvoting membership powers

Only those members holding voting units would participate in managing the property, and only a small percentage of membership units need be voting units The administration of the LLC would be governed by an operating agreement, which could be amended as circumstances might require Features the agreement should include:

Formal dispute resolution provisions; A system for making necessary capital class;

Options for members unable to answer capital calls with cash to instead provide specified labor, if applicable to the skills of unit holders; Unit holders who are unable to respond to capital calls, or who no longer want to participate in ownership of the vacation home, could cash out in whole or in part, with the LLC itself or other members having a first option to purchase at a price determined either by a preset formula or by an independent appraisal; Circumstances requiring a supermajority vote;XXX

Forbid transfers outside the family, without the consent of all the other members;

Elect tax treatment for federal income tax purposes as a corporation or, more likely, as a partnership, with any taxable income and deduction items passed through pro rata to the individual members; and

To keep the peace, allow even nonvoting units to participate in making fundamental, structural changes

Unlike an irrevocable trust, transfers can readily be made from one family member to another or from one generation to another without the need to record deeds (which can trigger property tax reassessments in some states) or open ancillary probate proceedings in the state where the property is located

There are a variety of estate planning issues involved in enabling families to leave this kind of legacy to the younger generation The strategies covered here, XX

which should be tailored to fit the needs and desires of each family (and which by no means should be considered legal advice), can help you realize the goal of leaving not just an asset but a family legacy

I BROKE UP WITH A FOUNDER FRIEND

Yes, It Was Over the Election.

I’ve made it through two Trump cycles without losing any friends or having to block anyone So my experience in November was an unsettling first learning that a White woman in my life had such room to surprise me

For context, I’m mostly emotionally detached from politics I’ve never felt super attached to the outcome of any election I remember wanting Obama to win, but I wasn’t going to die if he didn’t With the Trump win in 2016, I was shocked, but in a damn, that’s crazy America is trashy as hell kind of way. Only with this current election cycle have I felt genuine gutted emotion a first

This election was never about policy it was about preserving whiteness, plain and simple There’s no grand economic, foreign, or immigration strategy at play here The man openly admitted he didn’t even have a plan, but rather, “concepts” of a plan, while VP Kamala Harris had to dance on the head of a pin while somehow still remaining deemed as unqualified, despite her thorough political work history Let’s call it what that is: not White privilege that term makes them feel good It’s White supremacy For the first time in my voting history, I felt personally invested maybe even a little naively optimistic. My decision was a no-brainer I strategically requested an absentee ballot from my home state, Pennsylvania, and xXxxxxxx

I wanted to push back on the belief that when it comes to us, we’re expected to be overly critical, hyper-rational, and have endless scrutiny in our voting decisions So, yes, I proudly voted for Kamala Harris, highly in part because she’s a Black woman Just like the people who voted for Trump voted for him because he’s a White man

On election night, I had a few cocktails and found myself texting a founder friend of mine a White woman whose former clean skincare brand had benefited from the press visibility of being “Black-owned” due to her bi-racial co-founder.

This friend and I had known each other since late 2020 We’d quickly hit it off after connecting on Instagram, admiring each other’s brands and design sensibilities As time unfolded, we bonded over more intimate things our upbringings, current life tribulations, and the pressures of growing our businesses.

When my phone buzzed with a text back from her that read: “I don’t think we voted for the same person, girl,” my jaw hit the floor I replied, “Why am I so gagged?” Her response?

“I think Trump is best for our country right now”

While I knew Trump would likely have the majority White woman vote, truthfully, I would have taken her as somebody who would have not voted, before she voted xxxX

Check out Slutty Founder, Essence Iman, @sluttyfounder) The diary of an awardwinning former beauty founder

for Trump She doesn’t fit the Revolve wearing, Instagram influencing, bleachblonde archetype. The friend I came to know was a tasteful, open-minded, and insightful business woman, who had even been an extra in a Tyler Perry film Over the years and through our 10-minute long voice notes, I began to see her as thoughtful and aware of the world around her

We’d never delved too deeply into politics, which wasn’t unique to my relationship with her But I understood her to be pro-choice; a staunch believer in bodily autonomy When Texas started rolling back reproductive rights, she talked about her decision to leave the state, despite living in its most 'liberal' city, because it was getting too conservative for her

So when my phone buzzed with this revelation, I was immensely taken aback

She sent over a paragraph saying she loved me despite our political differences and wouldn’t judge me for my views therefore I shouldn’t judge her for hers, and that there’s no way we should ever let something like politics get between us

Spoken like a true closet conservative White woman I found this ultimatum to be emotionally manipulative, and it was a way of her wielding her whiteness in an attempt to dominate and steer the direction of our relationship without my say

I hadn’t asked her reasons for voting. Frankly, there was no justification she could have given that would make me feel like she was anything other than fake and a complete moron As I went silent for a little, she quickly spiraled into defense mode, following up with a long paragraph, her language taking on an edge I’d never seen before

“Letting millions of undocumented immigrants is just not safe or smart Other countries would never allow us to come to their country like that!” Her words ignited a collected back-and-forth

Her: “Are you saying Trump is racist or his supporters?”

Me: ”Umm, both?”

Her: “They’re crazy on both sides, girl”

Me: “She’s not endorsed by the KKK?”

Things didn’t get overly heated, but I felt so icky and I couldn’t help but feel that this conversation was getting beneath me I also couldn’t help but think that she’d chosen to reveal this side of herself because it looked like the Trump win was solidified

Her final words, before I wrapped things up, were that I should be open to giving it a chance “That’s just me, though,” complete with a shrug emoji I responded, “Girl, I’m Black!” and then I blocked her I’d be dishonest if I told you that this experience didn’t massively rattle me, and X

here’s why: it pulled the rug out from under my belief in my own discernment, showing me just how much more covert and ingrained White supremacy can be even when you think you understand how deep it lives Many of us Black folk have come to understand it in its modern form by now it lives within the girl who takes the Reformer next to yours at Pilates class, it’s the toxic girl-boss that claims female empowerment, and champions women-owned brands This isn’t news But I’m still left struggling to reconcile that even with this awareness how could I still come so far in missing the mark and what cues did I not see?

Her alt-right spiral was likely not about the loss of our friendship. It was about having to confront the destructive side of her whiteness, and me having the gall to call it out; she, as I expected, was offended that I wasn’t allowing her to ignore it

It’s not that this ex-friend is incapable of understanding why she can’t uphold systems of White supremacy and heteronormative patriarchy while in community with me she just doesn’t care And that spirit in her was unleashed the moment I held up the mirror That’s because White people fear being considered racist more than they fear actually being racist And every time we tiptoe around that or are hesitant to call it out for what it is, it only becomes more pervasive.

In the heat of the moment, I confided in a Black male founder friend In a bizarre twist, instead of sharing my outrage, he shared sentiments that he probably wouldn’t have responded if he were me To dismiss my experience further, his following texts focused on defining my personal negligence, in an attempt to weaponize the circumstances and justify how I ended up in that situation. “You xxxxxx

couldn’t have been that good of friends, then, it sounds like” “You haven’t talked about your political beliefs with this person?” “Why not?”

I asked him why it felt like I was being victim-blamed Was it that hard for him to just accept that White women can be that deceptive?

To him and anyone else questioning my judgment, I ask: has it ever crossed your mind that hmm I don’t know I’m human? People love to miss out on that part when it comes to Black women It’s not because they can’t comprehend that I have homo sapien DNA and a beating pulse. Again it’s because they just don’t care. At least, that’s how it feels.

Why is there this expectation that I should be more accountable for my disappointments? Am I supposed to live my life in a constant state of hypervigilance? Am I not allowed to be caught off guard? It feels very unfair to be a victim of such an egregious level of manipulation, and yet somehow manage to have the finger pointed at me.

I reject the burden that I should somehow be omniscient, all-knowing, and fine with having none of the power that should come along with it

This brings me to an interview Allison Williams gave on Late Night with Seth Meyers, after the release of Get Out, where she discussed how people would come up to her and insist on justifying her character, Rose They’d ask things like “She was hypnotized, right?” trying to find any way to soften her character’s villainy (which I’d argue, places undue culpability onto the Black lead) In the interview Allison shares, "She literally is a White supremacist who eats cereal with the milk and cereal separate she’s just evil. How hard is that to accept?"

Despite their achievements, the 6888th’s journey was not without adversity. Racial and gender discrimination were pervasive, even within the military. Yet, the women’s resilience, fostered by leaders like Maj. Adams and the unwavering support of Mary McLeod Bethune, helped them persevere. The battalion’s legacy stands as a testament to their extraordinary service and the transformative impact of Bethune’s advocacy. ges

A VISIONARY LEADER’S LEGACY

Bethune’s contributions to the 6888th and the broader war effort were rooted in her vision of a more inclusive society She viewed the participation of African American women in the military as a crucial step toward equality Bethune’s leadership ensured that the women of the 6888th received the recognition and resources they deserved, setting a precedent for future generations

Her work with Eleanor Roosevelt exemplified her ability to bridge divides and effect change at the highest levels Together, they championed the rights of African American women, challenging systemic barriers and proving that unity and determination could overcome even the most entrenched prejudices

A TRIBUTE TO UNSUNG HEROES

Through powerful performances by Oprah Winfrey, Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, and Susan Sarandon, the film brings to light a story that has long been overshadowed in the annals of history

The film’s depiction of Bethune’s role emphasizes her unwavering support for the women of the 6888th It showcases her ability to inspire and advocate, ensuring that their contributions were not only recognized but celebrated As Bethune once said, “Invest in the human soul Who knows, it might be a diamond in the rough ” Her investment in the women of the 6888th proved transformative, turning their service into a shining chapter of American history

Mary McLeod Bethune’s support of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion reflects her lifelong dedication to empowerment and equality Her advocacy ensured that African American women could serve their country with dignity and purpose, leaving a legacy that resonates to this day Through The Six Triple Eight, audiences are reminded of the profound impact of Bethune’s vision and the indomitable spirit of the women she championed Their story is not just a chapter in history but an enduring testament to the power of resilience, leadership, and unity
