CULTURALLY ROOTED IN HOSPITALITY

In this issue, we celebrate visionaries who are boldly reimagining legacy, luxury, and belonging on their own terms Hospitality is more than an industry it’s a legacy From boarding houses that sheltered travelers during segregation to the elegance of Black-owned inns, supper clubs, and resorts, African Americans have long defined what it means to host with heart, soul, and style That spirit continues today in the visionaries we celebrate those who turn spaces into sanctuaries and moments into memories

Chef Ameera Muhammad reminds us that some of life’s greatest journeys begin with an unexpected detour What started as a spontaneous trip to Saint Lucia became a calling a new home for rest, retreat, and radiant hospitality We also journey into the wild with Angel Massie, whose story as co-founder of Wanderland Outdoors reminds us that restoration often begins under open skies Her path from city deadlines to forest stillness is a powerful meditation on purpose and presence

In Baltimore, The Ivy Hotel marks a decade of Black excellence, fusing elegance, culture, and culinary artistry into a lasting legacy Just west, in Napa Valley, Choolwe Kalulu a pilot with no formal hospitality training saw something few could: a diamond in the rough. His restoration of McClelland House is a story of audacity, intention, and world-class design. Thank you for joining us on this journey. From that six-day excursion, her career evolved into a complete change of scenery as Chef Ameera now resides on the picturesque island of Saint Lucia

Chef Ameera’s passion is to be an advocate for the holistic approach to mind, body, soul, and health through food for healing, and for women She believes that ingesting the right foods can provide healing Chef Ameera is in the early stages of planning Elevate your Vibration: Island Frequency as an event for the late summer/ early fall of 2025 This experience will encompass seven days of culinary, cultural, and spiritual recalibration

Chef Ameera has partnered with Helen’s Daughter, an advocacy group for women farmers, to execute this event to its fullest potential The FarmHers Market in St. Lucia takes place twice a month on each end of the island, the Northern Island and the Southern Island Chef Ameera’s most recent offerings were drunken noodles using a yellow chow Mein noodle, lemongrass oyster mushrooms, and green papaya and mango salad with passionfruit dressing

Chef Ameera did not attend culinary school but won the very competitive and prestigious Food Network Cutthroat Kitchen show in 2016 Chef Ameera’s shot, which is favored by one of her celebrity clients, is an example of an energy booster: cayenne, lemon juice, oil of oregano, ginger juice, and odorless garlic (Kyolic)

Becoming a single mom at the age of seventeen, Chef Ameera staved off homelessness while trying to establish herself as a Private Chef xxxx

Her daughter became Sous Chef and has supported her mother by creating graphics, ebooks, and the chef’s website. Her first business card was given to Kenya Burris, creator of Black-ish, at Paramount Pictures while he was a writer on the hit show Girlfriends I guess you can say the rest is her-story

Before Chef Ameera pulled the trigger during the Summer of ‘24, she did her research. One resource available to Black women is the Exodus Summit on YouTube, cofounded by Stephanie Perry Chef Ameera visited St Lucia once again in May of that year, stepped out on faith, and relocated in July Thus, the nod to the title, Gone in 60 Days

Saint Lucia had cast its spell and welcomed Chef Ameera with open arms Although Chef Ameera sometimes laments that being an entrepreneur on the island of Saint Lucia is “not like being on vacation”

How do we honor those hands?’ Spring may bring ramps and shoots; winter offers hearty roots and game Each season has its poetry.”

TCHEF SCOTT’S FUSION OF HERITAGE, HAUTE CUISINE, & HOUSE MUSIC

Chef Scott Bacon is the executive chef at Magdalena, the bistro at The Ivy Hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. Classically trained and known for his innovative approach, Bacon blends his Southern Black and British heritage with French culinary techniques to create refined, seasonal dishes His cooking emphasizes local ingredients, vegetable-forward menus, and reimagined Maryland classics. Outside the kitchen, he’s an advocate for inclusive kitchen culture and also expresses his creativity as an electronic music producer

alk about your journey as a chef. You are very knowledgeable about food, its history, how to cultivate it, and its resources. When did you realize this was your passion?

I’ve always been fascinated by food not just how it tastes, but where it comes from and what it represents My culinary journey began with that curiosity and grew into a calling Over the years, I’ve come to view cooking as both a craft and a cultural language Food tells stories about who we are, how we live, and what we value That deeper connection to history, agriculture, and people continues to drive my passion in the kitchen every day

As the bistro’s first Black executive chef, what attracted you to this job?

Magdalena is a place where food has real purpose This is the highest level institution I’ve ever been a part of and the fact that it’s Black-owned makes that even more meaningful. What’s happening at The Ivy has always felt bigger than myself It’s a place rooted in excellence, but also in cultural storytelling I saw the opportunity to return not just as a chef, but as a steward of something uniquely Baltimore, uniquely Maryland, and deeply personal to me

What inspires you each season to elevate the menu?

How do you decide what items and/ or themes make the cut?

Every season brings new colors, flavors, and possibilities and that’s incredibly energizing for a chef Spring, for example, is full of fleeting treasures like ramps, peas, and shoots that might only be here for a week or two. That sense of impermanence is part of what makes our menu so alive At Magdalena, we don’t just focus on what’s xxxxxx

growing we consider who’s growing it, who’s fishing, farming, harvesting Our food reflects the broader community of producers and cultures that shape Maryland We make as much as we can in-house and build our menu around togetherness, honoring the people and moments that happen around the table

What’s next for Chef Scott Bacon? What can we expect to see in the next five to ten years?

Right now, I’m focused on building something truly meaningful at Magdalena I strive to create a space that’s not only driven by technique and flavor but also by cultural identity and purpose In the years ahead, I hope to continue growing that voice not just through the food on the plate, but through mentorship, storytelling, and building a kitchen that reflects the diversity and soul of Baltimore The future is about collaboration, consistency, and continuing to elevate what’s possible in this space

he practice of decorating and arranging space for comfort dates to ancientcivilizations like Egypt, Greece, and Rome Interior design XXX

has undergone significant evolution and cultural transformation, leading to its recognition as a professional field in the 21st century Tamiko White, founder of White Noise Consulting and creator of #NOWTrending, is a fashion and media entrepreneur, author, creative consultant, and producer who believes fashion influences everything

Since the 1800s, Black furniture makers and interior designers have pioneered the decorative industry with flair, grace, and innovation. By combining fashion and business, White has worked as a model, actress, television style segment host, adjunct professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, a global marketer, creative and sales director, owned a fashion showroom, and as a fashion business consultant Her capabilities include storytelling, marketing, hosting, creative direction, branding, and creative content production

In 2024, in collaboration with ModernContempo Luxury Furniture, White co-hosted a conversation about integrating fashion and furniture She is the author of “Careers in the Fashion Industry,” an insightful glossary to jobs in the fashion business The book highlights her fashion expertise and listings, describing characteristics, responsibilities, and salaries for those seeking a career in this industry White provides a comprehensive guide for traditional jobs in design, fashion, merchandising, and marketing, as well as pathways in sports, wellness, AI, tech, the business of fashion, and journalism

“The truth is, we know there is no shortage of creativity in our community As a 30year entrepreneur and veteran insider in the fashion industry, I’ve been involved for a long time. Many times, people don’t understand the business, or the gargantuan amount of financial capital required to maintain a fashion brand Additionally, there are numerous fashionadjacent jobs, and in the current era, where everyone is focused on content, ecommerce constantly seeks fresh experiences”

“Every single thing is marketed within the fashion cycle, from ice cream to insurance Never before have we witnessed such a demand for creatives and individuals with a fashion sensibility This demand was previously absent from the boardroom and C-suites; now, people seek those who think outside the box, and fashion professionals have been doing that forever.” Founded in 20024, Modern Contempo Luxury Furniture is a familyowned company that curates two premier galleries that feature a large collection of opulent and contemporary furniture designs

The Olufeko-Akinfe family believes in creating emotional value, exclusivity, and a prestige experience for customers who seek to express their identity via interior design

The North Bethesda, Maryland, location is a 25,000-square-foot home furnishing emporium offering a sanctuary of inspired choices for the glamorous, contemporary, and luxury modern lifestyle The newest and largest location in Springfield, Virginia, boasts a 52,000-square-foot warehouse, of which 20,000 is a showroom

CEO and Owner Yemi Char OlufekoAkinfe, has skills related to furnishing, business planning, market planning, and sales Both Olufeko-Akinfe and White share similar sentiments about fashion, design, and personal style These women have dedicated their professional careers to sharing the history, impact, and innovation of Black creativity

During her book tour, White’s outreach led her to Washington, D.C., where she bought a couch from ModernContempo The piece had immediately caught her eye because of the fashion-forward design Upon learning the luxury furniture company was Black-owned, White inquired about co-hosting an event to invite the community to learn how to have their personal space reflect and represent their personality

“Yemi and I talked about the community of the DMV, and not only people having homes, but there is a real community of people wanting their space to represent who they are We now get so much exposure to different mindsets because of social media, we live in a time that is much more receptive to understanding how your space is your sanctuary”

“Self-care that’s not considered a splurge but a normalcy in wellness Wellness that translates to your home, physical body, and clothing, ensuring that you feel good, and how to make it a priority How do I tell the story of who I am? Because I live here”

The brunch-style event focused on a conversation about allowing yourself to embrace personal style. White believes that accessories are punctuation and encourages that philosophy in home design Whether it’s silverware, candles, or vases, curating your space to nurture your soul is essential. About 45 guests attended the intimate event, and when the open forum part of the program started, White remembers a gentleman asking “when do you know when it’s time to get rid of something? Because I struggle with am I closet hoarder? Why am I holding on to it, and when do you know the difference?”

White shared, “I asked for responses from the audience; there were interior designers in the audience, and we wanted their perspective But what I directed was when things have sentimental value, I don’t believe you have to throw something away I think that if something has value and you want to keep it, you curate it For

keepsakes It only feels like clutter when it’s cluttered I believe if you give everything a place, you can keep it organized”

“What was beautiful about that moment was that a woman started crying, and she was saying that she had been holding onto a chair from her grandmother for years Everyone had been telling her to get rid of it, and she said she wasn’t ready, but she feels like it’s holding her back but wants to repurpose the chair It’s real for people to live in spaces they don’t feel seen in I felt that was freeing, we were so glad to have a small event and if one person can feel touched, to me it’s worth it”

Tamiko White has been able to serve her community with this information through her book tour and community events that connect the everyday with personal style She understands that if we are unaware of jobs and opportunities, we can’t harness the power and ownership of the intellectual property that comes from Black creativity Sharing her insight and access has allowed her to build a strong network in the fashion industry She is most proud of her resilience and the information she has published in her book To purchase “Careers in the Fashion Industry” visit White’s

A Pilot Who Put Wheels Down in Wine Country

By all traditional measures, Choolwe Kalulu had no business opening a luxury inn. With no background in hospitality aside from his global exposure as an international pilot Kalulu followed only a bold vision and an instinct for elegance when he purchased a crumbling historic home in Napa Valley What stood before him was a diamond very, very much in the rough

That diamond, today, is the McClelland House, a meticulously restored 1889 estate that has been transformed into a beacon of modern luxury with old-world soul Located just minutes from downtown Napa, the reimagined inn offers guests a stay that transcends the typical bed and breakfast seamlessly combining thoughtful design, comfort, and an unexpected air of grandeur

Once firmly rooted in the Forlorn Era, the original structure was modest and aging. Kalulu had the building lifted several feet to install a full basement and replaced the original back staircase with an elevator Every bathroom was gutted and rebuilt to match the unique themes of the guest suites, each appointed with state-of-the-art amenities and a signature design aesthetic

To bring his ambitious vision to life, Kalulu enlisted the expertise of Jill I Cole, ISHC, Managing Principal at Cole Martinez Curtis and Associates (CMCA) Known for her work on the Luma Hotel in Mission Bay and Canyon Ranch Retreat in Woodside both honored with the inaugural Michelin 3-Keys Award for hotels in April 2024 Cole brought a deep understanding of luxury hospitality “We design for the target market and the branding,” she said. When Kalulu told her, “I want it to be where Oprah can come and stay,” she understood the assignment

“The decorating theme used is eclectic and not purely Victorian,” Cole explained. Muted pastel tones subtly reference the property’s original stain glass windows while creating serene backdrop for mod touches: freestanding jacu tubs, cozy fireplaces, and pl Opuzen-upholstered cust sofas in the parlor, compl with pillows from the Sab Collection Thoughtful details conveniently placed outlets a generous ceiling heights (rang from 12 to 16 feet) make experience not only beautiful also comfortable and function

Service is the soul of the McClelland House. The staff, described by guests as “absolutely delightful,” are empowered to anticipate and fulfill nearly any request Wordof-mouth remains the property’s most powerful marketing tool and for good reason. A stay at McClelland House is the kind of experience that must be felt to be believed

The kitchen and adjoining lounge area serve as the property’s beating heart, where guests and locals gather over fine wines, laughter, and spirited conversation It is, quite literally, the room where it happens echoing the article’s namesake and a subtle nod to the musical Hamilton

Kalulu, who now serves on the Napa Airport Commission and participates actively in local community organizations, has even more in store for McClelland House Plans are underway for a members-only program offering exclusive perks such as private wine lockers, enrollment in a signature wine club, priority access to events, and reciprocal privileges at future sister properties A speakeasy is also being considered for the basement level, adding yet another layer to the property ’ s evolving narrative

Despite his quiet, enigmatic nature on Sundays, he prefers to unwind in his room with his phone on silent Kalulu has built something that speaks volumes “A major serendipity, ” he reflects, “has been meeting so many people I would have never met ” In doing so, he has created a space where others can do the same

MONIQUE GREENWOOD

Washington DC native and former Editor-in-Chief of Essence Magazine, Monique Greenwood, bet it all on beds in 1995, by investing in the Bed and Breakfast industry because of its cozy and intimate lodging experience Following her initial visit to Buttonwood Manor Bed and Breakfast in Cape May with her husband Glenn Pogue, Greenwood realized that managing an inn merged with all her interests: architecture, interior design, entertaining, and connecting with guests to help them create delightful, lasting memories.

Akwaaba Bed & Breakfast Inns is an upscale lodging collection of properties dedicated to restoring historical charm and grandeur to operate as a high-end B&B In Twi, a language spoken in Ghana, Akwaaba translates to "welcome” It's a common greeting used to express hospitality and warmly welcome guests Akwaaba signifies acceptance, friendliness, and cooperation Greenwood serves as the president and CEO of the company

The original plan for Akwaaba was a home for every season The first property in Brooklyn (1995) represented the fall, Washington DC (2003) for spring, Cape May (2002/ 2006) as the summer destination, and New Orleans (2005) in the winter Greenwood believes, “Real estate is the best investment you can make Initially, when my husband and XXXXXX

I started staying at B&Bs, it industry that lacked color, an lacks the diversity it should an have”

“We wanted to create pla spaces where our communi come and feel safe, nurtur celebrated, not just tolerated. ago, when we opened, most B& located in rural communitie towns, not big urban cities York and DC By putting them where we tend to be, or want to a successful strategy.”

Knowing when to pivot is also a part of the strategy When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Greenwood sold Akwaaba in the Bayou During the pandemic, she sold the B&Bs in Cape May and D.C., ultimately reinvesting into Akwaaba and purchasing new properties with a new plan to continue the three-decade legacy

Now with The Mansion at Noble Lane (2012), the Akwaaba Tea Salon (2024), and a B&B in Philadelphia (2018), Greenwood is expanding the brand with intention, grace, and elegance Mansion at Noble Lane is a boutique spa resort in Pennsylvania’s Poconos Mountains Built in 1903 as the country estate and gentlemen’s cattle farm of John Henry Strongman, one of the founders of the famed FW Woolworth five-and-dime empire, the Mansion at Noble Lane is a sprawling historic bed and breakfast located in northeast XXXX

Gilded Age mansion features 14 guest rooms, a seven-room spa, and a private tearoom A separate 10,000-squarefoot recreation building houses a state-of-the-art gym and an Olympicsized heated swimming pool The vacation home was the site of Akwaaba’s 2017 reality TV series “Checked Inn” on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network

When asked about current trends in hospitality, Greenwood shared, “Travel is a desired hobby, which has been the number one trend Solo travel is big We offer lots of amenities for someone traveling solo to feel at home and selfnurture. The music, the décor, the food, how we greet each other, the several nuances in there, we know what to do; we are you Our properties are authentic, there’s nothing made up You’ll come as a stranger, but you’ll definitely leave as a friend.”

“We also see trends around girlfriend getaways, in addition to couples, which have always been a mainstay for the romantic bed and breakfast I see more African Americans coming into the hospitality space because of Airbnb It was a big disruptor for our industry as homeowners were taking their homes and turning them into lodging establishments along with co-opting the name without the services we provide”

“For the first time B&B goer who stay at an AirBnb, guests want to understand why we’re charging tax, why our rates are higher, and they come to learn that because of the second ‘B,’ breakfast We have a hot breakfast each morning with concierge services to ensure the guests have an awesome experience. Where Airbnb is an unhosted stay, no one is there to help if you need it, and no one is making your breakfast or your bed We do all these things to help people understand the value of a B&B There are more ways to stay than your traditional hotel.”

Drawn to the City of Brotherly Love, their fifth inn in Philadelphia promised an exciting food scene, historic architecture, and urban edge The couple later purchased a collection of dilapidated houses just outside the gates of Noble Lane in the Poconos By 2024, the exquisite Akwaaba Tea Salon and Event Space was launched in Philadelphia, and three vacation rental homes complementing the Mansion’s inn rooms, opened their doors to guests in the Poconos

“We’re encouraging guests to find different ways to enter a space where we are sorely needed and where our customers look at us as superheroes I get to witness Black joy, and I feel like a celebrity every day, because I just made a big wedding for somebody who got married at the property, and then came back for their baby shower, sweet sixteen, repass for their parents, and then came back for a wedding anniversary We are touching lives in a very special way during pivotal times”

As a business and real estate veteran, Greenwood has leaned heavily on her confidence when faced with unforeseen circumstances She welcomes challenges and is most proud of her family and her resilience in the industry. “Life is hard, business is hard, but I’m the right girl for the job. The hospitality industry has taught me that there is immense joy in creating joy for others You belong in this industry if you walk through the world XXX

with the mindset of not what somebody can do for me, but what I can do for somebody That is something you can’t be taught I’m jazzed when I know I killed it! I just made their day, their week, their life! A part of that is being intuitive and being anticipatory of what guests need, even if they don’t know what they need Making a genuine connection with the guests, when I look at my life, my real legacy while I was here, I made a mark, and I didn’t leave a stain I didn’t go to school for hospitality, but I am hospitable.”

Parting advice from Monique Greenwood: “Make sure your business goals and personal goals are in alignment I would say start where you want to end, be intentional about how to walk the envisioned path. If I say my big goal is to work on the business and not in the business, make this employee run, I work my way back and teach myself how to delegate; I start where I want to end”

How Hotels Can Create a More Inclusive Experience for BIPOC Travelers

beyond the basics

Travel is about adventure, relaxation, and creating unforgettable memories Yet, for many Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) travelers, it often comes with the added burden of packing amenities that hotels overlook despite offering similar conveniences to other guests While hotels strive to create a home away from home experience, they sometimes fall short in addressing the unique needs of BIPOC travelers

The hospitality industry has traditionally catered to a one-size-fits-all standard, often assuming all travelers have the same preferences This approach can inadvertently neglect the needs of guests from diverse cultural and personal backgrounds To better understand how hotels can improve, we are sharing actionable insights on how the industry can foster inclusivity and ensure every guest feels genuinely welcomed

shower caps

It is standard for hotels to have every type of hair product “ one ” might need but not carry the ONE product for patrons with textured hair Shower caps come in handy to protect hairstyles from steam and for those who do not choose to wash their hair everyday

make up wash cloths

Hotels can say goodbye to makeup stains on their precious white towels by purchasing 100% ring spun cotton black makeup towels embroidered with the word makeup, to ensure their designated purpose is unmistakable

Silk Pillowcases for Better Skin & Hair Care

One of the most common frustrations for BIPOC travelers is the lack of hair and skincare-friendly bedding Hotels commonly use standard pillowcases, washed in heavy detergents and bleach, which can dry out both hair and skin especially for those with curly or coily hair textures Imagine the joy of finding a silk pillowcase on your hotel bed! Silk helps retain moisture, reducing frizz and breakouts, and keeps your hair looking as good on day three as it did on day one Plus let s be honest who wouldn t appreciate the touch of luxury?

Bristle Brushes for Better Hair Days

You may have noticed that standard hotel amenities include combs, but they don’t quite get the job done for everyone Many BIPOC travelers XXXXX

require bristle brushes which are designed for kinkier, coily hair types and are perfect for keeping hair in place without snagging or breaking strands Swapping out a comb for a quality bristle brush could make a big difference and leave travelers feeling ready to conquer the day (or night) without a hair out of place

Facial Washes That Nourish, Not Dry Out

Let s talk skincare After a long day of exploring a new city or country most of us just want to wash the day away But those tiny hotel bar soaps? They often leave skin feeling drier than a desert A gentle, moisturizing facial gel would go a long way, especially for those whose skin tends to be sensitive or prone to dryness Thoughtful additions like this, show that a hotel understands different skincare needs and preferences

Moisturizers That Actually Moisturize

While we ’ re on the topic of skin let's not forget the lotion Shea butter cocoa butter and coconut oil these are the hydration heroes many BIPOC travelers swear by While it’s lovely to have those mini lotions in every bathroom they don’t often pack enough moisturizing punch for all skin types It would be amazing if hotels XXXXX

offered a customizable amenities list where guests could select their preferred type of lotion, body oil, and facial products before arrival This thoughtful approach not only lightens the packing load but also acknowledges and celebrates the diverse needs of all travelers

Shampoo & Conditioner That protect hair Oils

When it comes to hair care one size definitely does not fit all Many hotelprovided shampoos and conditioners tend to be one-note often filled with sulfates and other ingredients that can strip hair of its natural oils For BIPOC travelers with curly coily, or textured hair, this can spell: DRYNESS Imagine stepping out of the shower and finding your hair dry frizzy, and less manageable than before A thoughtful swap to moisturizing shampoos and conditioners that maintain natural oils could make a world of difference Hydrating formulas with ingredients like coconut oil shea butter, or argan oil will ensure that guest s hair won t be a frizzy mess

By making these small but impactful changes hotels can create a more inclusive environment that feels like a home away from home for everyone And let’s face it a hotel that truly embraces diversity will win over the hearts (and bookings) of BIPOC travelers everywhere

BLACK FLORA: A BLOOMING LEGACY OF INNOVATION AND RESILIENCE

Flowers have long been symbols of beauty, resilience, and renewal qualities that also define the individuals featured in Black Flora: Inspiring Profiles of Floriculture’s New Vanguard. Written by Teresa Speight, this groundbreaking book is the first of its kind, celebrating the contributions of contemporary Black floriculturists who are redefining the floral industry with creativity and determination.

Through stunning photography and engaging narratives, Black Flora profiles more than 20 Black floral designers, farmers, and entrepreneurs across the United States. These visionaries, driven by a deep connection to nature, have carved spaces for themselves in an industry where their presence has been historically underrepresented As horticulturist and garden historian Abra Lee notes in her foreword, the work of these individuals is not only vital today but holds a significant place in garden history

The book highlights the journeys of floral artists who have overcome obstacles financial, social, and institutional to build thriving businesses and artistic legacies Whether borrowing land to cultivate blooms or launching floral enterprises against the odds, these individuals embody persistence and passion Their stories, spanning from Hawaii to North Carolina, serve as a source of inspiration for aspiring florists, gardeners, and entrepreneurs alike.

Beyond a celebration of achievement, Black Flora also serves as a call to action Supporting Black florists and flower farmers is essential in ensuring the sustainability and growth of diverse voices in the industry Readers are encouraged to purchase Black Flora to further explore these remarkable stories and to seek out Black-owned floral businesses Resources like Postal Petals offer directories of African American florists, making it easier to connect with and support these artisans

By shining a light on this new vanguard of floriculture, Black Flora reclaims space in an industry where Black contributions have often been overlooked It is both a testament to perseverance and an invitation to participate in a more inclusive and vibrant floral community Let us celebrate and support the hands that cultivate beauty, ensuring that these stories continue to bloom for generations to come
