On Juneteenth, the historic fairways of Langston Golf Course came alive as the Langston Golf Course Conservancy hosted its 4th Annual Lee Elder Memorial Golf Charity Classic a spirited celebration of golf, culture, and community that continues to cement itself as a new Washington, DC tradition
This year’s tournament paid tribute to the legendary Lee Elder, the trailblazing golfer who broke barriers as the first Black man to compete in the Masters Tournament in 1975, and who also managed Langston Golf Course from 1978 to 1981 The Conservancy’s mission to preserve Elder’s legacy was echoed throughout the day’s events, which combined friendly competition with cultural celebration and fundraising for youth empowerment

The morning began with registration, breakfast, and a shotgun start that sent golfers across Langston’s storied greens in a spirited scramble format Beyond the fairways, guests enjoyed curated experiences that showcased the community's vibrancy Grapes on the Green, a tented wine experience presented by Soul of Sonoma, paired select varietals with gourmet bites and scenic views of the course. The lively Slay the Fairway Golf Fashion Show brought flair and creativity to the greens, while the Après-Golf Classic Cookout, hosted by Ben’s Chili Bowl, kept the celebration going with food, music, and plenty of camaraderie under the Juneteenth sun
The day concluded with an awards celebration that spotlighted both athletic achievement and community leadership The Hospitality Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to nightlife and hospitality icon Marc Barnes, recognizing his decades of shaping the city’s vibrant social scene The Lifetime Achievement Award was bestowed upon former DC Mayor Anthony Williams, honoring his leadership and enduring contributions to the city Beloved personalities Alison Seymour and Michelle Rice emceed the program, adding warmth and energy to the occasion

In 2009, a junior in high school, young Chef Aaron LeRoi started cooking in a special culinary class with a team of students for a cooking competition program The ProStart program focused on teaching teen chefs how to prepare full-course meals to compete against other schools in the state LeRoi’s team took third place during their first year of the competition at the Baltimore Convention Center. The teens had a professional chef mentor who

In 1949 more than a decade before Julia Child’s television debut a spirited Creole chef from New Orleans made history When Lena Richard’s New Orleans Cook Book premiered on NBC affiliate WDSU, Lena Richard became the first woman in America to host her own cooking show. Broadcast twice a week through 1950, the program introduced audiences to Creole classics like gumbo and étouffée while showcasing something truly groundbreaking a Black woman teaching, leading, and redefining the culinary narrative in the Jim Crow South.
Born in 1892 in New Roads, Louisiana, Richard began cooking as a teenager before earning a certificate from Boston’s Fannie Farmer Cooking School an extraordinary accomplishment for a Black woman at that time Returning to New Orleans, she became a culinary entrepreneur, opening a cooking school for Black domestic workers, launching a catering business, and even developing a line of frozen meals years before the frozen food industry took off

In 1939, Richard self-published Lena Richard’s Cook Book, one of the first comprehensive collections of Creole recipes written by a Black chef The book later caught the attention of Houghton Mifflin, which reissued it nationally in 1940 as New Orleans Cook Book The publication was a quiet act of cultural preservation, validating Creole cooking as both art and history and asserting that the cuisine’s Black roots deserved credit and celebration
Her transition to television was revolutionary At a time when few Black people were seen in positions of authority on screen, Richard taught viewers how to prepare elegant, flavorful dishes with confidence and joy Her commanding yet welcoming presence defied stereotypes and challenged segregationist norms by presenting a Black woman as a trusted expert.

Though her show ran for only a year before her death in 1950, its impact resonated far beyond the airwaves Richard’s restaurants drew integrated crowds despite segregation laws, her students became professional chefs, and her influence shaped generations of New Orleans cooking
For decades, her contributions were overlooked while white chefs were celebrated as pioneers But recent recognition from Smithsonian exhibitions to academic research has restored Richard’s rightful place in American food history
Lena Richard’s story is one of vision, perseverance, and power She built a culinary empire that blended education, entrepreneurship, and cultural pride long before “representation” was part of the public lexicon.
If Julia Child introduced America to French cuisine, Lena Richard introduced America to itself its soul, its flavor, and its enduring creativity Her legacy reminds us that the foundation of American cooking was built, stirred, and seasoned by Black hands

A family history and homage, author Bettye Kearse recounts the perseverance of millions of enslaved, silenced, and invisible African Americans.
BY BETTYE KEARSE, MD

For more than 200 years, my family’s credo “Always remember you’re a Madison You come from African slaves and a president” has been both a source of pride and unease In 1990, when my mother, our seventh-generation griotte (a female oral historian), handed me the worn box of family memorabilia, I became the eighth “I want to give you plenty of time to write the book,” she said, her Texas drawl carryingtheweightofhistory.
At first, I resisted The credo spoke not only of resilience, but of violence; our family’s origins lie in slavery, rape, and incest My grandfather called us “the other Madisons,” descendants of both enslaved Africans and President James Madison To take up the role of griotte, I knew I had to face this legacywithintegrityandhonesty
Our story begins with Mandy, stolen from the shores of Ghana, forced onto a slave ship, was sold to James Madison Sr, and XXX
raped. Her daughter Coreen, born of those assaults, grew up alongside James Madison Jr later the fourth US president and bore his son, Jim To me, Mandy’s strength was the key Tracing her footsteps, I believed, would help me accept and honor thefulltruthofourcreed
My journey of discovery began in 1992, and spanned continents I stood on the docks of Lagos, Portugal, where the transatlantic trade began; in Ghana, where Mandy was captured at a Baltimore museum ship like the one that spirited her away; in Texas, where my great-great-grandparents and their sons learned they were free; in New York, where an African burial ground surfaced from beneath federal buildings And always, I returned to Montpelier, James Madison’s Virginia plantation, where Mandy labored and died. Walking its grounds, standing at the unmarked graves of my ancestors, I felt Mandy’s presence guiding me
I discovered that wherever enslaved Africans once walked, history tried to erase them beneath oceans, under courthouse ashes, hidden by walls and walkways Yet their stories endured American history may bury its secrets, but they resurface in family memories, in oral traditions, and in the persistenceofdescendants
Though textbooks minimize the role of people of African descent, we are woven into every facet of this nation’s wealth and culture That realization shaped my book, The Other Madisons What began as family history grew into a memoir that speaks to broader truths. Its message is this: “When enslaved people died, they did not bury their talents, hope, or belief in themselves They passed those gifts to us, their descendants”
“Wherever enslaved Africans once walked, history tried to erase them. Yet their footsteps endure in memory, in family, in us ”

“Each time I share my story, I pass along what my ancestors left me: courage, endurance, and the conviction that our voices matter.”

Publishing my book was its own journey
After many rejections, I found an agent who believed in my story and ultimately chose Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Though I disagreed with the subtitle our history is neither “lost” nor are we “other” the editor grasped my mission Originally slated for Fall 2019, delays pushed the release to March 2020, just as COVID-19 shuttered the world My book tour, unfortunately, evaporated overnight
Still, The Other Madisons found its way. Bookstores hosted virtual launches I spoke on podcasts, radio, and television I became the subject of a documentary The book won awards, including the National Association of Black Journalists’ XXXXX

Book Award and the Library of Virginia People’s Choice Award. Yet commercial success proved elusive.
And so, I continue to use my book to raise funds for organizations from the Equal Justice Initiative to local literacy programs Each time I share my story, I pass along what my ancestors left me: courage, endurance, and the conviction that our voices matter
The credo’s meaning is now clear. To be a Madison is to inherit both wounds and gifts, to bear the weight of truth, and to ensure that history our history cannot be forgotten

Historic organizations like Wake Robin Golf Club
the oldest Black women’s golf club in America continue to build pathways of opportunity, visibility, and legacy for the next generation of golfers in Prince George’s County, Maryland Their legacy, strengthened by partnerships with forward-looking organizations such as Road2Par, recently set the stage for a groundbreaking moment: the launch of the Sapphire Golf Tour
More than just a series of tournaments, the Sapphire Golf Tour represents a mission rooted in visibility, equity, and legacy for Black women in golf. As it makes its way across four major U.S. cities, the tour signals not only competitive excellence but also cultural transformation within one of the most exclusive sports in America
Woodmore embodied that spirit of progress and pride The evening featured keynote remarks from Prince George’s County Executive Aisha N Braveboy, herself a pioneering African American leader, who spoke with warmth and conviction about the importance of representation and perseverance Her words resonated deeply with the young women preparing to take the course athletes who, in turn, shared their own aspirations and determination to continue breaking barriers
Guided by the vision of producer Tarek DeLavallade, the Sapphire Golf Tour embarks on a journey destined to make history not only by who it includes, but by what it stands for
The Sapphire Golf Tour may be the first all-Black women’s golf tour of its kind a milestone decades in the making For much of the 20th century, women of color in golf faced systemic barriers that limited their participation, visibility, and advancement

And yet, until now, there has never been a national stage devoted exclusively to showcasing the talent and determination of Black women golfers The Sapphire Golf Tour changes that narrative
The timing of this moment could not be more powerful. In an era where conversations about equity and inclusion have entered the mainstream, representation in golf remains both overdue and essential
History was made in Atlanta when Georgia Oboh officially claimed her first victory on the Sapphire Golf Tour, firing rounds of 70 and 73 at Château Élan to rise above a talented field and secure the win
Golf’s future depends on expanding who belongs in the game who can play, compete, and lead For young women of color watching from the sidelines, seeing players who look like them succeed on national platforms is transformative. It is not just about sport; it is about belonging
Today’s emerging players walk in the footsteps of icons such as Renee Powell, of Clearview Golf Club the second African American woman to compete on the LPGA Tour Powell’s career stands as a XXXXXXX
testament to perseverance and purpose, emblematic of the quiet strength that has always defined Black women in golf
From collegiate athletes to professionals on the Epson Tour, countless women have laid the groundwork without ever receiving the recognition they deserve The Sapphire Golf Tour pays homage to those pioneers while expanding the vision for what is possible on a national scale.
Sustaining a tour of this magnitude requires more than passion it demands collective investment Corporate sponsors, golf organizations, and community supporters alike have an opportunity to stand on the right side of history by ensuring this tour not only launches but thrives
Supporting the Sapphire Golf Tour means funding equity, access, and representation. It means creating space for future champions to emerge The measure of true progress in golf will not be in who wins the trophies but in how inclusive the fairways become
The Sapphire Golf Tour is not just another competition it is a movement It envisions a future where diversity in golf is expected, not exceptional. With intentional investment and sustained visibility, the next decade could see a surge of Black and Brown women not only entering but dominating the LPGA Tour Their presence will inspire others, expand the game’s reach, and redefine golf’s cultural identity

The game of golf is wide enough, rich enough, and strong enough to hold every voice, every swing, and every dream. The Sapphire Golf Tour stands as a bold declaration of that truth and an invitation for the world to witness history in motion

I first “met” Pharrell Williams on a cold Paris morning in February 2004 He was sitting in the back of a limousine on the Champs-Élysées, its three passengers looking out toward the dizzying traffic circle that surrounds the Arc de Triomphe I was leading a group of travelers past the limo when one shouted, “Hey! Look who’s in that car!”
Inside was legendary singer Mariah Carey, legendary Hollywood producer Benny Medina and a man I didn’t recognize Benny, whom I knew from my radio days in New York City, stepped out, greeted us warmly, and introduced my group to soft-spoken Pharrell Williams and talkative Mariah, who asked a million questions about Black Paris history As we parted company, the passengers agreed to a couple of quick photos. My guests were thrilled
I’ll admit; I’d never heard of Pharrell But less than a decade later, the whole world would know his name Born April 5, 1973, in Virginia Beach, VA, he seemed destined to be a cultural lightning rod from birth He played with a band in grade school and in high school was performing with his group, The Neptunes, penning lyrics and producing Hip Hop, Soul and R&B groups, among them his friends, Teddy Riley, of Blackstreet, Mary J Blige, Britney Spears. Songs like Nelly’s “Hot in Here”, Justine Timberlake’s “Rock Your Body”, Kelis’s “Milkshake” and Snoop Dog’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot”
By 2014, Pharrell had given us HAPPY a song that did more than top charts It became an international anthem, inviting the world to get up, dance, and revel in being alive. That song won two of the 13 Grammys he has, but more importantly, it won hearts Pharrell had tapped into something universal: the power of joy as resistance, as healing, as making a way out of no way

In 2023, Pharrell stepped into another sphere of influence when Louis Vuitton named him artistic director of their menswear collection This was more than a fashion appointment; it was history Pharrell became the bridge between Parisian haute couture and the freedom and creativity of Black urban street culture, redefining what luxury looks like
In July 2024, for the Paris Olympics, Pharrell was a surprise addition to the Olympic torch-bearing relay He joined Snoop Dog and other international celebrities as the flame was carried from Marseille in the south along its final stretch heading to opening ceremonies in the French capital
One year later, on July 14, 2025, the quiet guy I met by chance received one of France’s most prestigious honors: the Légion d’honneur. Significantly, it happened on Bastille Day Pharrell was made a Knight, joining centuries of artists, leaders, and visionaries recognized for shaping culture and humanity
This was no ordinary award Since 2024, Pharrell has served as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, using his platform to champion arts, education, and entrepreneurship for marginalized Black, Brown, and Beige communities surrounding Paris and back home He’s focused on lifting up the next generation encouraging young creatives to see themselves not just as dreamers, but as the architects of a better, inclusive future
At 52, Pharrell is a husband, father of four, living and thriving in Paris He stands as a rare figure who has woven music, fashion, and cultural diplomacy into a single tapestry His knighthood is not just a medal it is a recognition of the way he has used creativity to connect people, uplift communities, and redefine what is possible.
Pharrell Williams is proof that influence is not just about fame, but about purpose From a quiet introduction in a car on the ChampsÉlysées to being honored on the day France commemorates its 1789 revolt against kings, Pharrell’s journey reminds us that art, when driven by purpose, has the power to promote, inspire, and unite
Ricki Stevenson founded Black Paris Tours in 1997, sharing little-known stories of Africans and African Americans in the City of Light while guiding travelers to jazz clubs, Diaspora museums, and unforgettable restaurants

Prospect Park was buzzing on Wednesday, September 3rd, as more than 1,000 runners of all skill levels took to the park’s infamous track for the inaugural WUNNA RUN 5K the first major event of rapper Gunna’s newly formed WUNNA RUN CLUB
The event was free to enter, with participants encouraged to donate to nonprofits serving underserved communities Organized in collaboration with Gunna’s Atlanta-based charity Gunna’s Great Giveaway and NYCRUNS, the 5K blended wellness, music culture, and philanthropy a rare combination that drew runners, fans, and wellness enthusiasts alike.
The 5K marks the latest chapter in Gunna’s remarkable fitness transformation one that began while the Atlanta-born rapper was incarcerated during the sprawling YSL RICO trial in 2022. During that time, Gunna committed to bettering himself both mentally and physically Since leaving jail, he’s shed significant weight, elevated his mental health practices, and vowed to participate in a marathon in the near future
Rolling Stone, captured scenes from the Brooklyn race, showing runners clad in WUNNA-branded gear, in partnership with Under Armour, hitting the pavement with Gunna himself running alongside them proof that his personal fitness journey has turned into a full-fledged cultural movement
“It’s a blessing, to bring people together, just come outside, It’s more about community We’re able to give people a sign of health and wellness pace yourself ” -Gunna to Boardroom
Gunna knows something about pacing; what began as a personal discipline now fuels his official run club, along with a growing roster of wellness-themed brands If his vision holds, the WUNNA RUN CLUB will soon lace up in cities nationwide, inviting communities everywhere to run toward health, healing, and connection
For Gunna, running became a way to quiet the noise after one of the most turbulent periods of his life “My mental, being able to try to zone everything out the outside world and just focus on getting the run out of the way,” he shared That simple practice has now inspired thousands to reclaim their own health physically and mentally Brooklyn was just the first stop It set the tone for what’s to come: a movement where health and hip-hop run side by side
In a culture that once mocked him for his weight and labeled him a “snitch,” Gunna’s pivot from scandal to service is nothing short of redemptive The WUNNA RUN CLUB isn’t just a wellness initiative it’s a public declaration that sometimes losing your circle isn’t punishment It’s preparation Now, Gunna is proving one step, one mile, one 5K at a time that redemption is best run at your own pace.
