CLEANWATERFOR AFRICANCHILDREN

A C H A R I T Y E V E N T

On March 19, the Carlyle Room was transformed into a vibrant center of compassion, commitment, and generosity Kimberly L Fogg, CEO of Global Sustainable Partnerships (GSP), Reverend Dr Jonathan L Weaver of The Weaver School, and supporters of the Global Village (a network of dedicated individuals and organizations united to provide clean and safe drinking water to children in Africa) gathered in celebration of this important cause

The event’s success was bolstered by the generous contributions of patron Joe Coleman The tireless dedication of many individuals who worked relentlessly to ensure its success was evident in every aspect of the planning process. The Global Village network played a pivotal role in raising awareness about the crucial need for clean water for African children, exemplifying the power of collective action and its ability to drive positive change

One poignant moment of the evening featured a heartfelt video by donors Trey and Steve Proctor, that highlighted the dire situation of children in Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who lack access to clean and safe drinking water The video served as an inspiration to all attendees, reaffirming the idea that it truly takes a village to make a difference in the world. It showcased the profound impact of the work being undertaken by GSP and The Weaver School, illustrating the transformative power of partnership and collaboration

Speakers provided powerful reminders of the significant difference made when individuals and organizations come together with a shared vision and purpose. The motto of GSP, "When We Partner, Miracles Happen," encapsulated the essence of the evening and reflects the belief that collective action, rooted in partnership and collaboration, can create miracles and forge positive change

Reflecting on the success of the World Water Day fundraiser reminds us of the ongoing importance of our efforts to provide clean and safe drinking water for children worldwide This event, which was the organization’s first major gathering since the pandemic, serves as a testament to the resilience and dedication of a community that cares Through partnership, dedication, and a shared commitment to making a difference, GSP will continue to create a brighter future for generations to come

MEDASE is a Black-owned, woman lead, beverage company based in Los Angeles, providing premium mocktails The brand is committed to promoting health, wellness, and mindful drinking with bold flavors and vibrant colors The irresistible canned elixir can be enjoyed at home, the beach, or a picnic The MEDASE brand draws inspiration from Co-founder Inga Dyer, the catalyst for the company’s inception, who tragically lost a valiant battle with cancer

Known as a visionary leader, passionate entrepreneur, and cherished friend, Dyer leaves behind a legacy of innovation and creativity Close friend and business partner Monica Cornitcher, gracefully accepted the challenge to continue advancing the company, holding firm to she and Inga’s vision of making MEDASE a household name

BIRTHOFA MOCKTAIL Anelixircreatedoutof friendshipforalltoenjoy

MEDASE is focused on quality. After carefully working with chemists, scientists, and mixologists, the handcrafted-style mocktails are created to deliver an unparalleled drinking experience to nourish the body while delighting the senses The hemp-infused refreshments make for great alternatives to traditional alcohol-based cocktails

While reflecting on this harrowing year, Cornitcher explains why MEDASE is all about legacy “I am now leaning into the legacy of MEDASE, that now drives my commitment to making this company global and to continue Inga’s memory now that she has passed We both had strong careers working for 25 plus years We got to a point where we both wanted something different That additional opportunity for us to solidify and collaborate on the project of a lifetime, and to lose her was super hard but again it continues to drive me”

Cornitcher also explains that making time to be appreciative of life’s journey and respecting how powerful it is to look for what is going right rather than xx

VISTAS MAGAZINE 8

what has gone wrong Choosing MEDASE as the company name challenges customers to think about how they live their lives. MEDASE means ‘thank you’ from Ghana, and that name resonated with what the founders wanted to tell people

“During our business calls, Igna and I would always talk about being more appreciative in the way we were trying to live our lives differently, says Monica “Being grateful for the friendship, where we were headed, and being thankful for all those things,” says Cornitcher. She adds, “If you consider alcohol and the impacts it can have on people from social interactions to behavioral and health components, we were thinking about how we can live healthier lives. Mocktails are where we landed”

The current MEDASE mocktail collection includes the Goodnight Moon Mocktail Moscow Mule and the Hello Sunshine Mocktail Margarita Each drink plays on the classic flavors of bar favorites without liquor Respecting the familiarity of the original cocktails, MEDASE blends are meticulously crafted to give customers what they’re looking for in a libation

With a passion for creativity and customer satisfaction, MEDASE aims to redefine the art of mixology by elevating the drinking experience without compromising flavor or well-being The contemporary twist on the classic Moscow Mule and the reimagined take on the popular Margarita allows the customer to enjoy all the refreshing qualities without the hangover

Cornitcher shared that the team worked with a chemist to identify the right recipes that would easily reflect classic flavor palettes into delicious mocktails She explains, “we don’t drink but we still like to have parties and have fun in a healthier way. New flavors are on the horizon like Old Fashioned, Lemon Drop, and Mojito”

In March 2023, MEDASE participated in Expo West, the largest food and beverage conference in the world that attracts more than 85,000 people and thousands of brands The expo helped MEDASE secure a partnership with a venture capital firm, in support of the goal to expand the collection to 12 mocktail flavors The company is seeking a worldwide market through online sales and placement in retail stores by 2025, and will include some non-hemp versions to grow the brand’s reach.

People seeking to live healthier lifestyles is giving the mocktail industry an exciting new platform Cornitcher adds, “I’m very proud of where we are We took the time to write our plans down and strategize on what we wanted and the steps to take to get there And now we’re meeting all the steps in the journey and it’s my job to continue that same journey, because again Inga’s voice and spirit is all embedded in everything we do with MEDASE There’s not many African Americans in the mocktail industry and MEDASE is reshaping the tapestry and speaking to a different generation of people while representing our people at the same time”

MEDASE believes the sincerity of their mission enhances the perception of their mocktails Made with organic juices and meticulously selected ingredients, all the flavors are a testament to the passion and expertise Cornitcher and Dyer both XXXXXXX

contributed to redefining what guests drink at casual gatherings, celebratory events, and quiet evenings at home

When asked about some of the challenges associated with the business, Cornitcher shared that funding has been the biggest obstacle, “our biggest obstacle has been capital, who is going to fund us on the next phase of our journey? We struggled but we took a chance”

Risks can pose great rewards Finding the right people to collaborate with and unique formulations keeps the company moving forward “We’re different from other drinks on the market because we’re not using things like stevia or sugar We’re using organic agave in our products making our drinks lower on the glycemic index while maintaining a high quality taste, “ adds Cornitcher

Cornitcher wants young entrepreneurs to stay patient and stay the course She encourages small business owners to write down their plans and take it step by step, while connecting with other people that advance their mission She says, “Don’t forget about the relationships that you’re building along the way, that is key.”

IMBIBE IN MODERATION +WINE WITH INTENTION

Wine has long been a part of human culture, and drinking it has the potential to enhance any meal and make gatherings more enjoyable

Medical researchers have explored the potential benefits of drinking a moderate amount of wine According to a 2021 study from The National Institutes of Health (NIH), wine has the potential to prolong life and enhance cardiovascular health This article highlights ways in which consuming wine goes beyond just pure indulgence, and the potential health benefits of moderate wine consumption and natural wines

The Greeks and Romans had a very strong connection to wine, not only for the enjoyment, but also its perceived medicinal value The father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, often prescribed wine for ailments, as he was among the first who documented its benefits when consumed moderately. For centuries, we have known of the French Paradox, which refers to the relatively low incidence of cardiovascular disease among the French while consuming rich diets Long connected to their moderate wine consumption, the observation of low coronary heart disease (CHD) death rates despite high intake of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat has been well documented

Though drinking wine in moderation has been associated with health benefits, alcohol can be addictive for some canceling out improved cardiovascular outcomes Heavy drinkers or those who abstain altogether do realize these health benefits

Drinking wine has also been connected to longevity. The NIH study suggests that moderate red wine drinkers tend to have a lower mortality rates concluding that moderate wine consumption XXXXXXX

15 VISTAS MAGAZINE

increases the expression of key longevity-associated genes like p53, sirtuin1, catalase, and superoxide dismutase in humans. It also significantly increases longevity-associated gene expression and longevity itself in experiments on flies, thus showing that the effects are maintained across the animal kingdom No serious unwanted side effects were observed

Red wine is considered healthful due to the high level of the antioxidant resveratrol Resveratrol is found in grape skins and is capable of combatting stress and helping to neutralize harmful free radicals Free radicals are unstable atoms that can damage cells and contribute to increased inflammation, which can lead to chronic illnesses including cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. Since resveratrol most notably helps with brain and heart inflammation by providing a protective lining for your blood vessels and preventing insult or injury it may contribute to overall well-being If the specter of heart disease runs in your family or keeps you up at night, a glass of red wine might just be what the doctor ordered!

WINE + CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH

Many epidemiological studies have revealed a reverse relationship between moderate wine consumption and the incidence of coronary heart disease Along with resveratrol, polyphenols, commonly found in wine, also may help reduce inflammation, improve endothelial function, and prevent blood clots These are a few of the things that may prove there are some heart health benefits associated with moderate red wine consumption However, it’s important to note that individual health factors and lifestyle choices also play a significant role in cardiovascular well-being, and moderation remains key to reaping these potential benefits

Unfortunately, blood pressure issues are pervasive in American society, whether hereditary or due to lifestyle African Americans are among the highest group affected by high blood pressure and hypertension and red wine has long been associated with lowering blood pressure levels Again, polyphenols that are found in red wine, such as tannins and flavonoids, may assist in dilating blood vessels and helping to improve blood flow thus contributing to maintaining healthier blood pressure Moderate wine consumption has also been linked to lowering cholesterol and improving insulin sensitivity As stated previously, moderation is essential to receiving the benefits of wine consumption, as too much can have an adverse effect on blood pressure, increasing it to the point of possible hospitalization. Individual responses to alcohol may vary, and those with hypertension or cardiovascular conditions should consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating wine into their diet for blood pressure management xxx

WINE + CHOLESTEROL

Elevated levels of LDL cholesterol, commonly known as "bad" cholesterol, are associated with an increased risk of heart disease Moderate wine consumption, again of red wine, has been shown to favorably influence lipid profiles by raising HDL cholesterol, the "good" cholesterol, and reducing LDL oxidation These effects may contribute to the prevention of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular complications Flavonoids and resveratrol studies also suggest these polyphenols found in wine, can inhibit the absorption of cholesterol from the intestines, further lowering cholesterol levels. Additionally, wine may help regulate cholesterol synthesis pathways in the body, leading to a more balanced cholesterol profile By promoting the production of enzymes involved in cholesterol metabolism, wine consumption could contribute to the breakdown and elimination of excess cholesterol from the bloodstream

WINE + COGNITION

Red wine has long been associated with improved cognitive function. The polyphenols found in wine, such as resveratrol and flavonoids, possess antioxidant properties that may protect brain cells from damage caused by free radicals Additionally, resveratrol has been shown to promote the production of nerve cells, which could enhance cognitive function and protect against age-related cognitive decline Moderate wine consumption has also been linked to improved blood flow to the brain, potentially enhancing brain function

The social aspect of wine consumption can contribute to better cognitive health Enjoying a glass of wine with friends or family can provide mental stimulation and social interaction, both of which are important factors in maintaining cognitive function as we age. However, it's crucial to emphasize moderation in wine XXXXXXX

consumption, as excessive alcohol intake can have detrimental effects on cognitive function and overall health Federal guidelines and the American Heart Association recommend that if you do drink alcohol, to do so in moderation That means no more than one to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. (According to the AHA, one drink is 12 ounces of beer, 4 ounces of wine, 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits or 1 ounce of 100-proof spirits)

WINE + DIABETES

Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States According to the CDC’s (Centers for Disease Control) National Diabetes Statistics Report for 2022 cases of diabetes have risen to an estimated 37 3 million A 2022 NIH study including nearly 312,000 current drinkers suggests consuming moderate amounts of alcohol (no more than 14 grams per day for women and 28 grams per day for men), especially wine, with meals was associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes Again, resveratrol and other bioactive compounds in wine, may enhance insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, offering protective effects against diabetes onset.

Furthermore, some research suggests that polyphenols may help improve endothelial function and reduce oxidative stress, both important factors in diabetes management Moderate wine consumption has also been linked to lower levels of inflammatory markers, which are often elevated in individuals with diabetes and contribute to insulin resistance. Medical professionals warn that adverse effects of too much wine or alcohol can increase the risk of complications associated with diabetes

WINE + WELL-BEING

Beyond its physiological benefits, wine holds a prominent place in social and cultural settings, fostering sociability and X

relaxation It is known to help ease inhibitions while also promoting more lively conversation Wines sensory qualities, such as taste and aroma, may encourage some to engage in discussions about the fascinating beverage, its origins, and the experiences it evokes A shared bottle of wine can also encourage a sense of camaraderie, and encourage a willingness to engage in shared experiences Moderate consumption of wine, particularly in the context of social interactions, has been linked to improved mood and reduced stress levels The ritual of sharing a glass of wine with friends or loved ones can enhance emotional well-being and promote a sense of connection

CONCLUSION

While the potential health benefits of moderate wine consumption are compelling, it's crucial to emphasize the importance of moderation Excessive alcohol intake can negatively impact the positive effects observed with moderate consumption and may lead to a host of adverse health outcomes, including addiction, liver disease, and certain cancers For those who choose to enjoy wine, moderation remains most important, with recommended guidelines.

Its rich history, complex flavors, and cultural significance make wine a truly remarkable beverage From promoting longevity to safeguarding cardiovascular wellness and preserving cognitive function, moderate wine drinking has been associated with an number of positive outcomes However, it's essential to approach wine consumption with mindfulness and restraint, recognizing that moderation is the key to unlocking its health virtues So, the next time you raise a glass of wine, savor not only its flavors but also the potential benefits it may offer to your well-being Cheers to health and moderation!

DR. SHARON

MALONE

There’s not enough talk around women’s health, and what little there is rarely helps Women are routinely warned, lectured, or threatened about their health. Or they are ignored, dismissed, or shamed But they are rarely empowered And empowerment, more than anything, is what women and women of color, in particular need Grown Woman Talk is for every woman who has felt marginalized or overwhelmed by a healthcare system that has become more impersonal, complex, and difficult to navigate than ever

The book is also for any woman who is simply standing at the intersection of aging and health, anxious and wanting solutions Part medical handbook, part memoir, and part sister-girl cheerleader, this book is filled with useful resources and real-life stories of victory and defeat It not only highlights the current data around women’s health issues, but it also places that data in a helpful context

In a tone that is lively and intimate but unflinchingly direct, Dr Sharon Malone details how to live better, age better, and get better medical treatment, especially when it’s most needed This is not a medical activism book designed to fight the power This is a book designed to show women that they already have the power they need only to increase their capacity and willingness to use it.

Most important, Grown Woman Talk seeks to eradicate the silence that surrounds women’s health by facilitating discussion between women of all ages and encouraging more accurate and productive medical insights It is Dr Sharon’s belief that giving women more agency can, literally, give them life

HEALING KARMA

PORSCHANEWTONONLIVING ANDLOVINGWITHPURPOSE

Through her own journey of self-discovery, Porscha Newton found a life of purpose, helping women recognize their self-worth

She established Fire Tribe in 2017, a community of women who meet regularly to uplift each other As their community expanded, she wanted to create a more personal connection with her 'tribe' by meeting in person This led to her hosting a retreat that would offer a supportive and genuine sisterhood, in a safe space for healing from sexual abuse and sexual trauma With the success of the retreat, organized through her company, Public Karma, she later established the Sacred Retreats brand for women outside of her circle searching for self-discovery

Sacred Retreats offer women an unfiltered, unbiased, no-judgment space that encourages them to let their guards down and embrace the freedom of vulnerability Newton, has taken her responsibility as a practitioner seriously, receiving training from a school of sexuality and sexology She also went to ministry school to better engage women in the Black community The success of her sold-out retreats is predicated on her credentials, her life experiences, and her own journey

VISTAS interviewed Newton to understand and share her critical and unique approach to help women process and heal their trauma

21 VISTAS MAGAZINE

VISTAS: What exactly are Sacred Retreats?

Porscha: They are retreats focused on intention, which means focused energy, focused on the positive, love, and growth Using intention in all areas of life is how we show up in all other areas of our lives. I teach the women to have more intention in their conversations, more intention in their daily rituals of how they treat themselves, more intention to the people they surround themselves with, and more intention in their choices Doing this creates a sacredness and deeper meaning of who we are Many of us are disconnected and on a robotic program When we set intentions in our lives, it becomes more meaningful.

VISTAS: Why do you coordinate Sacred Retreats?

Porscha: After my journey of self-discovery, I realized how important it is to live a life of intention I felt 'called' to help other women do the same I wanted to give them a safe space and create a genuine sisterhood. My goal is to help them understand intention and to live intentionally in a non-competitive way

VISTAS: What is the most rewarding part of what you do?

Porscha: The transformation of a woman. For in woman attending one of the retreats, who was rel first, came in and we began the program by was feet The foot washing ceremony is a regular pa retreat, it's considered 'the Giving,' and this is p with intention and sacredness It honors the wome in and bonding them in their energy, which allows be responsible for whatever comes up for the crying and her sister comes to hold her hand, and also starts crying when it's her turn to have her fee As the retreat was coming to an end, the sisters they had never experienced that much trust and felt so much love from another woman That blew m

VISTAS: How do you create these transformations?

Porscha: From the first day of the retreat, I women to know they chose themselves, and we'r celebrate that We do everything that we can to m they can receive what is given to them. Th professional women who work and give so themselves, so the retreats are to show them what receive in this moment and what they will allow th to receive from someone else Then they can d how they can add this to their lives to make it mo and more intentional

VISTAS: What's next for Public Karma?

Porscha: I want to help other women create exp for their community, showing them how their ret be profitable, and done with intention

VISTAS MAGAZINE 22

VISTAS: What are traits that someone who wants to start organizing these types of retreats should have?

Porscha: #1 Flexibility – If they can't pivot then this is not the business for them Having flexibility means having the ability to pivot and be able to work well under pressure #2 Organization – This doesn't mean just planning an itinerary The program needs to be cohesive so that the results and transformation remain When my team helps me organize the retreats, we do everything intentionally, from the location selection, down to the colors we use Organizers must have the heart for what they are doing to create cohesive experiences that fit with the theme and the intention of the retreat #3 Integrity –Having the ability to lead with your heart and acting with passion from a place of integrity is key I don't think my retreats would be as impactful or as transformational if it were only about earning money

VISTAS: What are some challenges of hosting retreats?

Porscha: Facilitators do not charge enough. Monetarily retreats are very profitable, but often, organizers don't understand the infrastructure or how to stack up the marketing, and sales of the project They have to understand that it is not about how much they charge, as much as it is about the value they offer and the transformation People struggle with selling the retreat They don't fully understand there is a difference between marketing for a retreat versus product or course sales It's about having the right staff and people to help you push the event, and again, I think most people don't charge enough They want to charge as little as possible and this diminishes the experience for attendees and what they receive, thus it doesn't allow the organizers to continue creating the experience they want, year after year Once I saw what I could create with more money, collaborations, and sponsorships my retreats grew

VISTAS: Can you share a story of someone who inspired you at a retreat?

Porscha: A woman who came to one of the retreats spoke to me about how her father took advantage of her for most of her life The story touched my heart, and so I continued working with her I told her that one day she would inspire so many women who are in the same position and don't know how to heal I eventually got her to a place where she could write a love letter to herself I told her that if she can't find anything about herself that she loves, then write what you like about yourself. She couldn't write it, so I told we would write it together She said she couldn’t think of anything She began going into this judgment about herself I told her I wanted her to go back to the little girl who was full of life before these situations happened and look at her from a witness perspective What does she need to hear and what do you need to tell her? What did she need to understand at those moments when things were not ok? It makes me emotional because today, she is now a podcaster and her first episode was, 'A Love Letter to Herself' Then last year, she was a keynote speaker at one of my retreats, helping another woman who realized the same things happened to her

VISTAS: I can see there is a lot of healing happening. What is the first step in helping someone organize a retreat?

Porscha: The first step is to understand their 'intention' If the intention isn't there, it won't carry through in the experience

VISTAS: Do you mentor your clients and if so, howfardoesthatextend?

Porscha: We do everything from e-books to help people who just like to read and sit back and make up their minds about what they want to do, we provide them with a guide on how to intentionally start hosting retreats There are à la carte options where I come in to organize, plan, and do XxXXXXXXX

everything you could think of I call in my team, my sponsors, and my contacts, and then we do everything for you including marketing and branding I really believe in being able to get monetary value in what we do because this is what keeps the mission going, so we do need to sell seats, which is why I help my clients with everything I also believe that accountability is everything because initially, retreats can be overwhelming and logistically confusing, which is why I am happy to step in to create these special experiences for their community

VISTAS: What is the one thing that you hope womentakeawayfromyourretreats?

Porscha: Worthiness That they are worthy of all things That God is limitless Stay authentic to who you are, and trust that there is nothing in this world that you can't have and do You're worthy of it all We don't have to decide if we'll have one thing or another because God is all things, and we gettoexperienceallofit

VISTAS: How do you rejuvenate yourself (self-care) after a retreat? Do you have a ritual?

Porscha: I always plan two days, alone, after the retreat to ease back into life Taking into nature, sitting alone with my thoughts As a mom and businesswoman, I have to cut everything off. My kids are my safe space, they help me get reenergized I usually rent a house after the retreat to connect and spend time with my kids I practice silent morningsthatalsohelpmerejuvenate

VISTAS: Who is an ideal candidate for your retreat, and can you easily identify if they are readytoreceivewhatyouareoffering?

Porscha: My ideal client is struggling with her self-worth, and it's showing up in all her business, life, and what she thinks of herself The woman who is ok with giving her all to everything that she touches, but when it comestoherself, she'snotapriority.

VISTAS: Thank you so much, Porscha for taking the time to speak with me today I've learned so much in the time we've spent together. You are an inspiration to me, and I applaudyouforallthatyoudo!

Maintain a Spirit of Curiosity

Life just gets so much richer when we stay curious A curious woman is all about diving into the unknown, hungry to learn, understand, and explore how things tick She's drawn to the new and the unfamiliar because that's where the magic of discovery and joy lies. It's what keeps her mind buzzing, wide open, and always on the lookout for the next adventure.

Create a Home that is Inspiring & Supportive

The space around you has a huge impact on your mood. Being in a cozy, beautiful setting can really help you feel relaxed, happy, and just overall better When you're excited about where you live, you will emanate a certain energy and allure And, a woman who radiates this kind of energy is magnetic and will attract all that she desires

Cultivate a Mindset of Abundance

A woman with an abundant mindset operates under the belief that the world is full of sufficient resources for all She’s confident that outcomes will ultimately align in her favor, she is adept at navigating stress with grace Such women are seen as: 1) more inventive, channeling their creativity toward beneficial results for their community; 2) resilient in the face of adversity, maintaining their composure and determination; and 3) dedicated to forging a life marked by depth, freedom, and profound satisfaction

Curate Your Wardrobe

Having a wardrobe that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and stylish can positively impact your self-image and attitude towards aging. As we age, our bodies will change, so having clothing that fits well and flatters the figure can boost confidence and self-assurance. A mature woman should also be mindful to wear garments that are elevated in quality and compliment her age.

guest speaker series

VISTAS editorial staff had the privilege of experiencing an informative panel implemented by Executive Chef Mitch Vanagten of UC Merced In an announcement earlier this year, Chef Mitch says he was, “Motivated by a desire to bring the same caliber of guest speaker programming to UC Merced that is often experienced in larger, bustling cities and campuses, I embarked on a mission to bridge this gap and enhance the cultural vibrancy of our community. “

He had listened to Chef David Chang’s (Momofuku) podcast where he interviewed Natalie Baszile, the author of We Are Each Other’s Harvest: Celebrating African American Farmers, Land, and Legacy (HarperCollins, 201) Chef Mitch became so intrigued with the subject matter, he purchased the book The chapter that impacted him most was on the unscrupulous practices toward black farmers by the USDA (pg 69) He began sourcing food from BIPOC growers within a 150 mile radius when making purchases for UC Merced

Chef Mitch, also spearheaded a 50 book giveaway signed by Baszile and made copies available in several local libraries When he read the chapter on Brenae Royal, Vineyard Manager, Monte Rosso (pg 106), he noted she was local with Atwater roots, and invited her to participate in the speaker series She sat on a panel during the 8th installment in his Guest Speakers Series, which was the first time Brenae’s family was able to see her speak in a public forum. Chef Mitch was honored as Chef of the Year by ACF Monterey Bay Chapter on Sunday, June 9th Congrats are in order

We Are Each Other’s Harvest: Celebrating African American Farmers, Land, and Legacy (2021) is composed of short chapters on various farmers using picturesque writing and great human interest narratives Multiple sections can be easily consumed in one sitting, and of particular interest is the chapter on Sankofa Farms (pg 55) detailing the perseverance required to garner success in an unlevel agricultural playing field

LESSONSTOMYDAUGHTERON LOVE,WELLNESS,&SELF-CARE

From mundane moments to life’s gre milestones, my affirmations for my daughter, Sasha A Alston, serve as a prayer for her well-being Recently, a conversation between us illuminate profound impact of our bond on our

underscoring the importance of self-love and the tangible ways in which our relationship fosters wellness Let me count the ways

1. Expressing Love

For as long as I can remember, I've made it a habit to tell Sasha that I love her in a singsong chant, regardless of where we are or what we're doing - “I love my Sasha…I love my Sasha.” Even when she's not physically near, I find myself verbalizing my love for her, hoping that wherever she may be, she feels the warmth of my unconditional affection in her spirit Repetitive messages that seep into our unconscious mind are powerful

2. Words with Actions

Expressing love through words is essential, but backing them up with actions is equally important. I vividly recall a moment from Sasha's childhood when she handed me a list of her needs with remarkable clarity and respect Some requests included: “Be a little bit more nice; Spend more quality time together, Try to listen to what I want for my room and Be a good listener please”.

3. Including Self-Care

In a candid exchange, Sasha, now in her midtwenties, assured me that she feels deeply loved, particularly by me, and that she has cultivated a strong sense of self-love She outlined her daily self-care rituals, which include affirmations, morning meditation, exercise, reading, and setting healthy boundaries with others This conversation revealed how our relationship fosters not only love between us but also encourages individual wellness and self-care

This list served as a wake-up call for me to be more attentive and responsive to her emotional needs, leading me to adopt a gentler demeanor and prioritize quality time together Being a single mom and newly stressed-out lawyer with a heavy caseload was no excuse for a little girl (aged- 9) who simply wanted a fully present and considerate Mommy I listened

4 Supporting Dreams

From encouraging Sasha's interests in technology as a teenager to exposing her to various experiences without pressure, I've strived to support her dreams and foster her personal growth I was never a helicopter mom but I was an invested Momager that acted as a springboard for sound business advice and encouragement as her dreams manifested. Striking this balance helped to empower her to pursue her passions fearlessly on her own terms

For Sasha, this has led to remarkable achievements within education, her career, and her social justice initiatives empowering young women and girls.

5. Maintaining Connection

Despite living in different states and leading busy lives, Sasha and I make a concerted effort to stay connected through daily phone calls, texting, and sharing humorous content And when we get together, whether it’s trying new restaurants, binge-watching provocative films, taking brisk walks or plotting our next adventure, our bond remains unwavering, strengthened by open and consistent communication

Sasha and I have encountered and overcome many challenges. Despite what life uncertainties may arise, we'll continue to face them together with the inner strength our spirituality provides and support from our loved ones

6. Respecting Boundaries

Respecting each other's boundaries has also been crucial in maintaining a healthy relationship Sasha's understanding of my need as an introvert for solitude and recovery time speaks volumes about her consideration and respect for my wellbeing And my awareness of when I am i h h h ostly cially volve k off

7. Staying Grounded

Sasha now works for a major, global company and is the best-selling author of the children’s book, Sasha Savvy Loves to Code She was in town recently giving an uplifting presentation to children at a local hospital. After hours on my couch, snacking and watching movies, it was time for her to head back home Our farewell ritual of a super short hug and a quick “goodbye” reminded me of the unbreakable thread that binds us. We give more weight to “hellos” than “good-byes” We remain grounded in love and a positive outlook
