“I'd be willing to bet that, pound for pound, Berkeley is the most enraptured city in America on a daily basis.”
–MICHAEL CHABON, AUTHOR

he vibrant art scene and splashy culinary credentials in Berkeley make it shine. Free speech and flower power are forever in the Berkeley genome, and the city continually reinvents itself as a celebrated place to dine, listen to live music, take in a play, and feel an authentic (if endearingly off-beat) college-town vibe.
Berkeley flashes with everyday discoveries ranging from vibrant street art and public galleries to major performing arts venues. A culinary wonderland, Berkeley’s food scene is contemporary and legendary. Independent merchants thrive in Berkeley’s tree-lined, walkable districts. And along with all the cultural and culinary experiences to savor, Berkeley offers at least as many ways to enjoy the great outdoors.
Martin Luther King, Jr. called Berkeley “our nation’s conscience” during a 1967 speech here, and the city continues to embrace its role as the heart and soul of the Free Speech Movement and a progressive future. And yes, Berkeley still wears tie-dye on its sleeve. But a closer look reveals a diverse, multifaceted city where everyone is welcome. Like the UC Berkeley motto, Fiat Lux (“Let there be light”), Berkeley shines as a beacon by the Bay.
Beacon by the Bay
With a sparkling setting on San Francisco Bay, Berkeley is a spirited Northern California city with counterculture roots that has grown to become a hub of intellectual vim and cultural vigor.
Berkeley’s First People
Welcome to the Homeland of the Huchiun, a Chochenyo Ohlone Speaking Tribe.

I
n March 1772, the arrival of a group of Spaniards at a Huchiun village on the southeast shore of today’s San Pablo Bay ushered in a time of upheaval and suffering for the people under Spanish, Mexican, and early American governance of California.
Despite this devastating history, Ohlones, within whose ancestral homelands Berkeley is located, remain present and engaged with their larger communities, as do other American Indians from throughout North America who currently reside in the greater Bay Area.
In Berkeley, their engagement has
led to the establishment of several innovative place-based reminders of Ohlone presence. These include the 2019 installation of welcome signs at Berkeley’s city limits that acknowledge it as Ohlone Territory, completed with the guidance of the Confederated Villages of Lisjan and Indigenous women-led Sogorea Te’ Land Trust (STLT).
In 2020, a street mural was created adjacent to City Hall that recognizes Berkeley as “Ohlone Territory.” Berkeley became the first city to recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day in 1992, which became a U.S. holiday in 2021. Annually, on the Saturday
another visual land acknowledgement mural was completed, also in collaboration with the Lisjan and STLT, at Bonar Street and University Avenue on the side of the Berkeley Unified School District building.
In 2024, a 1995 mural that commemorated Ohlone culture and presence was repainted in consultation with the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. (Find it at the corner of Milvia Street and Hearst Avenue at Ohlone Park.) Ohlone Park’s 1976 naming marks the city’s first formal acknowledgement of Ohlone presence.
Also in 2024, after a period of advocacy and fundraising by the Lisjan, STLT, and a group of supporters, the last remaining undeveloped portion of the West Berkeley Shellmound, a more than 6,000-year-old sacred Ohlone burial ground, was freed from ever being developed. Located along Fourth Street at Hearst Avenue, near the Berkeley Transit Plaza, this Shellmound site is a place of prayer and ceremony. This includes an annual three-mile Shellmound to Shellmound Prayer Walk that begins at the West Berkeley Shellmound on the day after Thanksgiving.
To learn more about Ohlone history and culture, visit ebparks.org for an Ohlone curriculum and a “Native Peoples of the East Bay Past to Present” brochure.
City of Firsts
Born in Berkeley
In Berkeley, there’s a spirit of innovation that comes with the college-town setting. It’s a dynamic place where things are discovered, invented, and sometimes, reinvented.

Fiat Lux: Let There Be Light

Founded in 1868, UC Berkeley is the original campus of the University of California system. Firmly established as one of the world’s most highly ranked public universities, the UC Berkeley campus is an urban oasis that preserves much of the tranquil beauty of California’s early years. As such, the Cal campus also serves as Berkeley’s own "Central Park," with historic architecture and wide, landscaped walking paths that cross campus and connect with the neighboring Telegraph Avenue, North Shattuck, and Downtown districts. Visitors are always welcome to take a walking tour of campus. Here are the highlights you won’t want to miss.
Known to most as the Campanile, Sather Tower is perhaps UC Berkeley’s most famous symbol. Visible for miles, it stands 307 feet tall and is the second-tallest freestanding clock and bell tower in the world. An elevator ride to the observation platform at the 200-foot level provides visitors with a spectacular view of the campus and Bay Area. Sather Tower, named after campus benefactor Jane Sather, was modeled after the tower that stands in the Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy. The Campanile houses a 61-bell carillon. (With 38 stairs from the elevator's top floor, the observation platform is not wheelchair accessible.)

Hearst TheatreGreek
(1903)
This 8,500-seat amphitheater is set in the Berkeley hills. The first campus structure designed by campus architect John Galen Howard, the theater was a gift from newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Berkeley’s Greek Theatre uses the Ancient Amphitheatre at Epidaurus in Greece as a model but also includes Roman elements.
California Memorial Stadium (1923)
Home of the California Golden Bears football team. Designed by John Galen Howard, Memorial Stadium is dedicated to students who lost their lives in World War I. Since it opened in the fall of 1923, Memorial Stadium has generated scores of memories for generations of Golden Bears. Cal Athletics joined the Atlantic
trustee of the College of California, forerunner of the University.

Sproul Plaza
(Late 1950s)
This bustling campus hub is where students meet, musicians perform, and political, religious, and social activists expound, especially at noon during the academic year. At the center is Ludwig’s Fountain, named after a beloved dog that spent most of his waking hours in and around the fountain in the 1960s. Look for the small bronze plaque marking the Mario Savio Steps, honoring the Free Speech Movement's famed activist.

The Bancroft Library is the school’s primary special collections library. It is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of manuscripts, rare books, and unique materials in the United States. Highlights include the Mark Twain Papers, the single largest collection of original documents by and about the author, including notebooks, correspondence, autobiographical and other manuscripts, lifetime editions, and related materials. General editor Robert Hirst points out that Twain was a “lifelong, inveterate, and ambitious traveler.” It was Twain, after all, who famously said “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.”

The Morrison Library, located inside the Doe Library, provides a tranquil atmosphere to take a break from the rigors of academic life. Its vaulted ceilings and long reading tables serve as a quiet refuge. I may be biased, but ever since I was a UC Berkeley undergrad, I have seen our campus as the well-educated, wonderfully chaotic heart and soul of this vibrant city. I’ve lived in this town for more than 30 years, and I love to make the most of all that it has to offer beyond the confines of our campus.”

Bird’s-Eye View
Peregrine falcons, the fastest birds in the world, attend UC Berkeley. Well, in a way. Since 2017, peregrine falcon couples have nested and raised their chicks atop the school’s 307-foot Campanile tower. In totally natural areas, Peregrine falcons will nest on cliffs, but in cities, tall buildings act as perfect stand-ins for cliffs. The Campanile is well protected from predators and human interference, offering the chicks a safe space to grow and learn to fly. Learn more at calfalcons. berkeley.edu and @Cal_Falcons. For an in-person view, the outdoor screen at BAMPFA live streams the hatch and fledgling season.

L o cal Libations
Thirsty? You’re in the right place. Berkeley’s beverage scene is the perfect complement to the city’s culinary chops. Cocktails, craft beer, and natural wine offer plenty of ways to unwind; plus, the city is brimming with cute cafés for coffee and tea. Hop between tasting rooms, tea houses, breweries, cafes, and bars, and you’ve got a local libations destination that’s definitely worth the sip!

Hops On
Berkeley is an effervescent place for beer. Here are three spots to try.

America’s craft-brewing renaissance tapped Berkeley in the early 1980s with the establishment of Triple Rock Brewery one of the country’s original brewpubs. Triple Rock’s award-winning ales include the locally beloved IPAX, a piney, classic West Coast IPA.
Jupiter is a downtown taphouse with wood-fired pizza, salads, and sandwiches. Housed in a livery stable from the 1890s, Jupiter exudes charm. The open-air beer garden surrounds a striking fountain and flame, causing many to say it’s a 21st-century “fountain of youth.”

That’s the Spirit!
Trumer Pils
Brewery is a Berkeleyby-way-of-Salzburg institution, where the heralded Trumer Pils pilsner is brewed. The taproom pours both limited-edition and signature suds. Gilman Brewing Company, Fieldwork Brewing, and Olfactory also have a handle on Berkeley’s locally brewed legacy.
“Trumer has called Berkeley home for 20 years. Our location on Fourth Street has industrial roots and a diverse history that is reflected in our neighbors and customers alike. We’ve watched our neighborhood grow to support local wineries and breweries, and we are proud to be a part of it!”
–CHRISSY REINTHALER, MARKETING MANAGER, TRUMER PILS BREWERY
What’s your philosophy at ZINO?
We showcase cocktails from when the hotel opened in 1910. My challenge is to create drinks that play with history and offer a modern twist, to align with our motto of "reimagining history"
What's your approach to the art of mixology? ZINO is a Mediterranean restaurant, so creating a harmony of flavors that layer well with the history of these Prohibition-style cocktails is the vision. Balancing culinary technique and flavors with alcohol can elevate the whole experience. I love to have conversations with patrons at the bar. When you talk about the craft of mixology, it brings people from different social circles together to bond, have drinks, and get to know one another a little better!
Raise a glass to the local drinks scene in Berkeley.

Berkeley Wine Block
Sip your way around Berkeley's thriving natural wine scene.
The heart of Napa Valley is 35 miles from downtown Berkeley, and Sonoma is just a few vineyards farther afield at 45 miles. This proximity translates to a ready supply of California’s finest fruit for Berkeley’s burgeoning collection of urban wineries. Berkeley’s wineries are tightly clustered within the Gilman District’s Berkeley Wine Block, perfect for car-free winery jaunts.

“We love the maritime weather of Berkeley for our wines, cooled by the Bay front ... There’s so much diversity across ages and cultures that exists in Berkeley, and they all support our city. There is a sense of uplifting community here.”
– CHRIS BROCKWAY, WINEMAKER AND OWNER, BROC CELLARS
Cafe Cultu r e
Berkeley's cafe culture has its roots in the Free Speech Movement.
Natural wines are a Berkeley keynote, made with low intervention and bottled without stabilization, fining, or filtration to retain the fruit’s most vibrant flavors and aromas. In Berkeley, natural winemaking is more than a trend—it's a sustainable practice that raises the flavor bar. There’s a shared perspective among Berkeley vintners that “vines” back to the food movement championed here by Alice Waters at Chez Panisse and her pioneering food cohorts. The wine version echoes those natural farming philosophies that drive the art of sustainable, organic, and biodynamic farming from the vineyard into the cellar.

In the wake of the 1966 Free Speech Movement, European ex-pat Alfred Peet began to brew another born-in-Berkeley revolution: craft coffee. Visit the original Peet’s Coffee retail space in Berkeley’s North Shattuck for a cup,
and don’t miss the hidden museum behind the counter paying homage to Mr. Peet. Inhale, sip, and experience where America’s love affair for coffee culture was born. A new wave of coffee shops in town includes Cafenated Coffee Company with its original location in North Shattuck and a second cafe in the Elmwood District.
Cafenated Coffee is dedicated to sourcing and carefully roasting coffee from well-established, women-owned coffee farms in cooperatives in Central America, South America, and Africa.
Berkeley Coffee Shops

Born in Berkeley Peet's Coffee isn't the only thing born in Berkeley. For more, turn to page 7.

These are just a few of Berkeley's coffee shops that beckon you to come in, sit down, and linger over a cup of expertly prepared java.
Sparkling Sake
A perfect representation of Berkeley’s international flavor, Takara Sake produces sippable styles of Japan’s signature drink in West Berkeley. Brewed with pure snow melt from the Sierra Nevada Mountains and premium rice from the Sacramento Valley, Takara Sake comes in many styles, including its signature Sho Chiku Bai line. Taste it all in Takara’s tasting room, a Japanese shrine of reclaimed Douglas Fir and granite tile dotted with glass recycled from bottles. Check out the museum to learn how sake is made and see sake-making tools from the early 20th century.

“Cafenated found its home in Berkeley because we're passionate about building community. Berkeley's vibrant coffee culture, with the highest number of coffee shops per capita in the U.S., provides the perfect backdrop for creating a space where people can connect and relax."

The Power of

It’s no surprise that Berkeley is a dynamic force in California’s world-class arts and culture scene. The city is home to UC Berkeley, one of the world’s leading educational institutions. It’s infused with the creative vibe of the San Francisco Bay Area. And there’s a local reverence for poets, painters, and every free-spirited iconoclast in between. But what it really comes down to is the work of local artists and organizations, state-of-the-art venues, and the city’s support of the local scene.

rom the theater marquees that line the Downtown Arts District to the independent artists who set up shop here, creative energy flows in Berkeley. You’ll feel it in museums, theaters, galleries, and concert halls. You’ll discover it at public art projects and exhibitions throughout parks and plazas. And even after you’ve left Berkeley, chances are, the arts and performances you experienced will leave a lasting impression. After all, just like travel, art has the power to transform.
Art for All
The City of Berkeley’s Civic Arts Program supports a culturally vibrant and diverse arts ecosystem to ensure equitable access to high-quality arts and culture for residents and visitors.
Berkeley is home to more than 150 active arts and culture nonprofits offering an array of theater, music, festivals, dance, visual arts, and more. The nonprofits that make up Berkeley’s arts sector are particularly diverse in terms of their size, educational offerings, and creative disciplines, and include numerous acclaimed theaters, music venues, galleries, dance studios, and maker spaces.
Complementing these cultural organizations, Berkeley is also home to a wide range of independent artists and artisans, who operate on a smaller scale producing fine arts such as painting, sculpture, music, and crafts like textiles, stained glass, and metalwork. Dozens of sculptures, murals, mosaics, and other public artworks reflect the unique character of the city. Discover artworks and their locations on the City of Berkeley’s interactive Public Art Collection database and check out the latest exhibition in the Cube Space Gallery on Addison Street.

Garden Parties
Stroll these gardens for a dose of outdoor inspo.
Berkeley has lyrical public gardens. The UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley showcases exotic plants including a Chinese Medicinal Herb Garden and Tropical House. The Regional Parks Botanic Garden at Tilden has the largest collection of California native plants in the world and features a grove of Earth’s largest tree, Sequoia sempervirens (California Redwoods).
Look up and prepare to be amazed. You just might find that the majesty of these redwoods is a proper metaphor for Berkeley’s towering cultural legacy.

Inspiration Everywhere
In Berkeley, art is not bound by four walls. Creativity is everywhere— if you know where to look.
Well Versed
Berkeley has its own poet laureate, a literary artist who serves as the creative ambassador for the city and champions Berkeley’s historic tradition of free speech.
LITERARY LIGHTS
The Berkeley Poetry Walk lines the sidewalks of the Downtown Arts District along Addison Street. Here you’ll find 128 cast-iron panels emblazoned with poems selected by former national Poet Laureate (and retired UC Berkeley professor) Robert Hass. Each poem has a connection to Berkeley, honoring its literary traditions and the great artists whose lives or writing have intersected with it. Included are works by Allen Ginsberg, Thornton Wilder, Gertrude Stein, Jack Lon-
GREAT BONES
From UC Berkeley’s landmark buildings to the city’s evolving downtown skyline, Berkeley has fantastic bones. Take an inspiring walking tour to marvel at the University of California’s early 20th-century buildings (turn to page 41 for more). History buffs should book a room at the Julia Morgan-designed Berkeley City Club, dubbed the “Little Castle.” (Morgan also designed Hearst Castle, the City Club’s sister property on California’s Central Coast.) This 1930 building features vaulted ceilings, carved archways, and grand gathering areas that blend Moorish and Gothic design influences.

Berkeley Symphony
Recognized nationally for its spirited programming, Berkeley Symphony presents major new works for orchestra alongside fresh interpretations of classic repertoire. Upcoming concerts in the current season include works by John Adams, Einojuhani Rautavaara, and Dmitri Shostakovich.

Bookworms, mark your calendars: The annual Bay Area Book Festival celebrates literary luminescence and presents readings and lectures from contemporary authors across multiple downtown venues (both indoor and outdoor). AdventuUrbanres
Berkeley brings many ways for visitors to get outside, breathe a little deeper, and engage in a lovely lineup of recreational pursuits. Best of all? Most of them are just minutes from the heart of the city. Whether you’re cheering on the Bears or hiking a trail with scenic bay views, here are the best ways to play in Berkeley.

Visit the O.G. Dog Park
Berkeley is a great place to be a dog. Ample open space, pet-friendly hotels, and the world’s first dog park at Ohlone Park are just a few reasons to woof with joy. Ohlone opened in 1979; today, it's still a haven for dogs to race around off-leash in the heart of the city. (Ohlone is a park with play features for humans, too.) Berkeley Humane provides life-saving programs for cats and dogs, cultivating compassion and strengthening the human-animal bond.
Park It
Walking is woven into the soul of Berkeley. A network of public paths give visitors and residents a chance to take in Berkeley at their own pace.
Hiking and biking trails meander along the bay, through landmark parks, and along the forested Pacific Crest above the city. Visitors can golf, sail, or walk through epic botanic gardens. Adventure-seekers will discover opportunities for rock climbing, kayaking, skateboarding, and more.
The Berkeley Rose Garden boasts 1,500 rose bushes and 250 varieties of roses, along with thorn-free views of the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Across the street, Codornices Park beckons with a beautiful hillside setting. Historic, too; this is one of Berkeley’s first

Alcatraz and Angel islands. This may be the best place to fly a kite in California—a scenic, wide-open green that’s set across from the Golden Gate Bridge and a prevailing Pacific breeze.
Brickyard Cove Regional Park at McLaughlin Eastshore State Park provides magnificent views of the entire San Francisco Bay and skyline. Parking, bike racks, picnic tables, restrooms, water fountains, interpretive signs, walking and biking paths, and connection to the San Francisco Bay Trail are all here.
Take a leisurely stroll through the UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley
Tilden Re gional Park
As Berkeley’s beloved backyard escape, Tilden Regional Park offers plenty of ways to play in a sylvan Berkeley Hills setting.
Located above the UC Berkeley campus in the Berkeley Hills, Tilden Park Golf Course is just minutes from downtown. The terrain features rolling, contoured greens and fairways lined with redwoods in a peaceful setting.
Family travelers will discover Tilden Park has several hubs for family fun, including an antique merry-go-round in the woods, a slice of rural life at Little Farm (with farm animals!), and a scale steam train that chugs through stands of towering redwood trees.
Tilden Regional Parks Botanic Garden has the world's most complete collection of California native, rare, and endangered plants.
Tilden Park's Lake Anza is another favorite. Its sandy beach is sheltered from the bay breeze, and lifeguards are posted during the swim season.
Hiking in Tilden Park is a favorite pastime for locals and visitors alike, with nearly 40 miles of trails
for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Trail maps can be found on most of the bulletin boards at trailheads in the park, or you can pick up one up at the Berkeley Visitor Information Center
Tilden’s paved and wheelchairaccessible Nimitz Way has spectacular views of San Francisco and the Bay from the crest of the East Bay hills. Find the best trailhead parking at Inspiration Point on Wildcat Canyon Road. The East Bay Skyline National Recreation Trail follows Nimitz Way and other Tilden trails along part of its 31-mile route. Lake Anza’s perimeter trail circles Tilden’s summertime swimming hole, and Wildcat Gorge Trail and Seaview Trail are perennial trail favorites.
parks, established in 1915!
Cedar Rose Park is a vibrant greenbelt perfect for picnics and pick-up soccer, with basketball courts, play structures for little ones, community gardens, and tennis and pickleball courts. For rock climbing, check out Indian Rock Park, a craggy gem in Berkeley’s Northbrae area. Make the steep ascent to see sunsets over San Francisco Bay. Pro tip: Bring a baguette and cheese from The Cheese Board Collective! For waterfront views, head to César Chávez Park. Its marina bayfront setting offers panoramic views of three San Francisco Bay bridges, plus
This 34-acre sanctuary has more than 10,000 species of plants from around the world. The Garden is organized into nine world regions, including a major collection of California native plants and the newly renovated Tropical House. Some dub the Garden a “zoo for plants”—its collections are a valuable resource for research and conservation.

Mind, Body, Soul, Berkeley

Meet two local businesses and discover their answer to "Why Berkeley?"

DOM MORALES
Owner, Pamana Plantas, Solano District
What drew you to open your plant and gift shop on Solano Avenue?
Solano Avenue is known to have a bunch of mom-andpop shops. After seeing many women-owned businesses in the area, it made me feel like the surrounding community would support my endeavor. Berkeley has a welcoming community that supports small businesses.
Where are your favorite places to go after hours in Berkeley?
Jupiter, La Marcha, El Patio, Kiraku, and of course, Little Gem Belgian Waffles!

FERN SOLOMON
Owner, Fern’s Garden Solano District
Why is Berkeley the perfect place for Fern’s Garden? Our customers really understand our mission of supporting ethically made artisan wares. They are devoted to supporting independently owned businesses.
We feel very lucky to be in such a thoughtful, aware community. From the day we opened our doors eight years ago, the response has been incredible.
Why did you set up shop on Solano Avenue? My children insisted that this block of Solano Avenue was the place to be. Of course, being next to so many wonderful shops helps a ton! We are in a vibrant, lively neighborhood and we love being a part of the Upper Solano Business District.
Where do you like to hang out in Berkeley?
I love nature – you’ll often find me walking Blake Gardens and the Tilden Botanical Gardens. I also love taking a sandwich to the Berkeley Marina and enjoying the Bay views.
Berkeley is the ideal place to find your center and amplify joy. Yoga studios, wellness spas, dispensaries, and practitioners of massage, acupuncture, meditation, and other modalities will get your om back. UC Berkeley psychology professor Dacher Keltner even wrote a book on it (Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life)!
“Awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends your current understanding of the world."
–DR. DACHER KELTNER, UC BERKELEY DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR AND DIRECTOR, GREATER GOOD SCIENCE CENTER

Day 1
Morning
Begin with a splendid turn on Tilden Park’s antique merry-go-round, riding hand-carved and whimsically painted wooden carousel animals. From here, it’s a short, scenic drive to Redwood Valley Railroad, Tilden’s narrow gauge steam train, for a ride through hill and dale. Afterwards, head to Lake Anza for a picnic lunch and a splash at Tilden’s tree-lined water play area.
Afternoon
Tilden Park’s Berkeley Hills neighbor is The Lawrence Hall of Science part of UC Berkeley. It’s an interactive museum that introduces science to kids in fun new ways. Exhibits include Forces That Shape the Bay, where visitors can divert a river, trigger an earthquake, move tectonic plates, and learn about ocean creatures. Catch a 3D nature film or learn about the galaxy at the Lawrence Planetarium. Outside, enjoy panoramic Bay vistas while the kids climb on Pheena, the giant fin whale, and the double-helix play structure.

Day 2
Morning
Start your day with a full breakfast at Fourth Street’s Oceanview Diner

PIZZA RULES
Berkeley loves pizza! Try these local favorites.
Refuel at Pizzeria da Laura a cozy neighborhood spot in the heart of downtown. Tired parents will appreciate the wood-fired pizzas and craft beers at Jupiter
After perusing the local shops and galleries of Fourth Street, head west to the Berkeley Marina Adventure Playground is a fun spot featuring kid-designed and -built forts, boats, and towers. Little ones can check out basic tools and make their own wood toys and designs. Riding the zipline is another crowd pleaser. For more traditional playground structures (swings and slides), head next door to Shorebird Park
Afternoon
Head to Gather in downtown Berkeley for its farm-to-fork casual menu. Then wander with wide-eyed wonder around the UC Berkeley campus. Some call the campus Berkeley’s
Palate Pleasers
If you've got picky eaters in your family, everyone will be satisfied with a trip to Cali Alley. Order burgers, fries, and mac and cheese from the walk-up window.
Craving something sweet? You're in the right place. Go for chocolate salted caramel cupcakes at CupCakin' Bake Shop or mochi muffins and donuts at Third Culture Bakery. Satisfy your teens with a visit to Sharetea for Insta-worthy boba and refreshing lemonades.

Central Park. In addition to treelined paths, huge statues, and grass glades perfect for playing catch or tag, the campus is studded with architectural gems dating to the 1870s. Take the elevator to the top of Sather Tower for a bird’s-eye view of the Bay. The next stop is North Berkeley’s Indian Rock Park with its massive rock outcroppings. It’s steep in parts so take care as you ascend to the top for a panoramic view over the Bay (try to time your visit at sunset for the full technicolor show). It’s a great perch to have a snack and rehydrate before heading back down.

“For over 50 years, Pacific Center has contributed to the LGBTQIA+ environment of Berkeley and the greater East Bay. We are proud of the legacy we’ve built as part of this community."
–PACIFIC CENTER
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, LASARA FIREFOX ALLEN
Pacific Center for Human Growth
The Pacific Center for Human Growth began more than 50 years ago with determination and vision, courage and creativity, radical inclusivity, and deep attunement to the diverse needs of its constituents. From the early days of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement to the heartbreak of the AIDS crisis to the cultural shift that legalized same-sex marriage, Pacific Center has remained an advocate and a safety net for the community. Today, Pacific Center provides a wide array of critical services to serve the needs of LGBTQIA+ youth and seniors.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Berkeley is a diverse city where equity and inclusion are civic keynotes. Everyone is welcome in Berkeley, and visitors feel this citywide climate of inclusiveness, from a friendly smile and wave, to the hotel front desk agent, restaurant owner, and independent merchant who all strive to serve in a broadly inclusive and equitable manner. The City of Berkeley’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) works to create an environment of mutual respect, equity, and acceptance of the persons it serves.

BERKELEY’S JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION
Juneteenth (June 19), one of the oldest known commemorations related to the abolition of slavery in the U.S., has been celebrated in Berkeley since 1987 as one of the city’s signature street festivals. (Juneteenth National Independence Day was signed into law as a national holiday in 2021.) In June 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston Bay,
Texas, bringing news of freedom to enslaved Black people, more than two months after the Civil War ended and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Celebrating Black liberation is a celebration of our collective liberation. From its Free Speech Movement roots to today, as access and inclusion are still unequal, Berkeley shines as a beacon for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' DAY
Berkeley became the first city to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day in 1992, which became a U.S. federal holiday in 2021 (as with Juneteenth, Berkeley was ahead of its time!). Each fall, the Indigenous People’s Day Powwow and Indian Market takes place in Downtown Berkeley. See page 6 for a history of Berkeley’s first people.
