As we steadily segue into autumn, and the new government starts delivering on long-promised changes to systems and processes across the board, it’s probably a good time to take stock of your practice’s practises. How do your operating procedures measure up today from when you last sat down and reviewed them?
Are you up-to-date on disability discrimination laws, for example? Do you know your team members’ rights when it comes to paid parental leave? Are you aware of the changes in employment law coming down the track? Are you confident you are running a progressive independent practice with an eye on AI, sustainability, digital transformation, high-tech imaging and the most advanced contact lens technology currently on offer?
All these practice areas – and much more – will be discussed at the NEG Building for Success Conference in Nottingham later this month. On top of this unique opportunity to get together with your fellow members will be the chance to scope out what’s new and improved in the optical marketplace at the NEG preferred suppliers’ exhibition.
Being held on the Monday of the conference, the exhibition will welcome 28 companies that are committed to supporting the independent optical retail sector. This is your chance to discover the latest eyewear, contact lenses, instrumentation, dry eye products, lenses and accessories – as well as meet the teams from NEG’s business support partners. Turn to page 13 for a sneak preview of what they will be showcasing.
There is still ample time to register for your complimentary place at the conference, which will mark the 45th anniversary of NEG with a relaxed and informal dinner on the Sunday evening. The teams from Optinet, NEG and all participating sponsors and supporters very much look forward to seeing you there...

Italy beckons for customers taking part in a new promotion from EssilorLuxottica. Running until the end of February 2025, the initiative will see participating practices earn points on orders placed for lenses, frames and instruments over the next six months –with the chance to win a place on a trip to Italy. The exclusive event will take place next year, and participants will be treated to a half-day business meeting, supplemented by a mix of activities, excursions and free time to enjoy the local surroundings.
Alan Pitcher, commercial director for wholesale lenses at EssilorLuxottica, said: “Our brand portfolio has never been more exciting with a diverse product mix, providing plenty of opportunities to boost points to secure a place. We hope the incentive will support, motivate and reward our ECP business partners. It promises to be a great event and we look forward to welcoming attendees who can join us.” The promotion includes Transitions Gen S and new 2024 frame brands including Jimmy Choo, Ferrari Scuderia, Ferrari Cavallino, Brunello Cucinelli and Swarovski. Practitioners can sign up for the promotion with their business development manager.

Continental Eyewear
Continental Eyewear, part of the Millmead Optical Group, has added two new frames to its LK Bennett collection, numbered 86 and 87. With a rounded rectangular shape and embossed temples, acetate model 86 blends comfort and style. It is available in teal, blue and black/tort. Featuring sides adorned with chain links, model 87 is a delicate, elegant metal style. This soft hexagonal shaped frame is available in gold, rose gold and silver. The new styles are designed to enhance the collection’s reputation for expert craftsmanship and detailing, offering additional options for those seeking high-end eyewear.
Eco-friendly eyelid wipes
Positive Impact
Fully biodegradable TearRestore NeutraWipe Eco wipes, and the Story Shades eyeshadow palette from optocosmetics brand the Eyes are the Story, are the latest products to be added to the Positive Impact (PI) Dry Eye Zone.
Inspecs
New styles in the Superdry collection
TearRestore NeutraWipe Eco wipes have only three ingredients: natural Manuka honey, antibacterial hydrolysed soy protein and purified New Zealand water. The hypoallergenic, oil-free, homeopathic and salt-free formula is said to be ideal for sensitive eyelids experiencing dryness, styes or blepharitis – and can be used daily for blepharitis, demodex mites or clogged meibomian glands.
PI managing director, Nick Atkins, said: “We have held off adding a lid wipe to our portfolio due to concerns over sustainability. As with all our Dry Eye Zone range, it was important to find something unique with significant benefits over what’s currently out there. NeutraWipe Eco is that wipe and initial feedback has been positive.”
The autumn/winter 2024 Superdry eyewear collection from Inspecs indulges the brand’s passion for detail and colour, featuring intricate motifs and sophisticated techniques throughout. Breezy blues and pretty pinks sit alongside flattering nudes, vibrant reds and electric yellows. This is a collection that leans into trending tones, using them to accentuate the cool wearability of the Superdry brand.
The collection features intricate detailing, bespoke corewires, and bevelled edges to add interest. The more masculine styles balance timeless preppy cool with athletic shaping. Handcrafted acetates, matt metal and integrated hinges give a premium feel to the pieces. While these styles are easy to wear every day, bold design notes give each style a point of difference. With the more feminine pieces, cast metal script logos, ultrafine temples and steel rim/acetate pairings are standout features of the collection. Modern hexagons and retro butterfly silhouettes are designed to offer looks that exude ‘urban confidence’.
Developed by Essiri Labs, the Story Shades eyeshadows are formulated for all skin types and are vegan and crueltyfree. They feature caffeine, an alkaloid said to help reduce inflammation and puffiness, and the natural anti-oxidant Resveratrol.
Essiri Labs founder, Amy Gallant Sullivan, also executive director of the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society, said: “The Story Shades is our latest answer to eye cosmetics that impact eye health. We bestow upon all women the gift of confidence and beauty, safeguarding their eyes.”
The palette includes a neutral base shade, a highlighter and a range of rich neutrals and dark colours.

Ray-Ban Change frames with Transitions lenses
EssilorLuxottica
Ray-Ban Change is the new light-responsive frame powered by Transitions. Available in Ray-Ban’s Original Wayfarer and the Wayfarer Oval, in both sun and optical styles, the unique colours and patterns of the frame are created using Transitions photochromic dyes, which rapidly activate when exposed to UV light. The frame activates within seconds in sunlight and fades back within minutes indoors.
“Ray-Ban continues to break boundaries and set new trends, keeping innovation at the forefront of design,” said Federico Buffa, chief marketing officer at EssilorLuxottica.
“Tapping into the power of Transitions and its technology birthed a new way to experience eyewear through light-responsive frames known as Ray-Ban Change. We took the leader in lenses, Transitions, and the leader in frames, Ray-Ban, to unify in one dynamic product, giving consumers the opportunity to make their functional eyewear fashionable.”
De Rigo
To mark 50 years since Porsche unveiled the fastest road-approved sports car of its time, the 911 Turbo, Porsche Design has launched two limited edition sunglasses in partnership with De Rigo: the Turbo No. 1 and the Turbonite. Paying homage to the first Porsche 911 Turbo, gifted to Louise Piëch, daughter of the legendary engineer, creator and inventor Ferdinand Porsche, as a birthday present in 1974, the Turbo No. 1 is based on the classic Porsche Design P‘8478. This unisex aviator incorporates the original grey paint colour and red plaid pattern of the vehicle’s interior, is made of lightweight titanium and features an interchangeable lens system with VisionDrive Lens Technology.
The silver mirrored lenses feature a tartan pattern, and can be swapped for grey lenses. The red pattern is also featured on the cleaning cloth and gift box, which bears the classic Turbo lettering. The P’8928 Turbonite features a new metallic grey tone specially developed for the monochrome Porsche crest on Turbo vehicles. These unisex squared aviators are made of lightweight titanium and feature the same interchangeable lens system, with an additional pair of green lenses in a gift box. There are only 1,974 pieces in each style, symbolising the year the original Porsche 911 Turbo was revealed 50 years ago.

Essilor has launched part two of its multi-channel media campaign for Essilor Stellest lenses as it continues to revolutionise how parents approach their children’s myopia. Part one featured a 30-second video commercial and digital display adverts and was seen 50 million times during June and July. Part two aims to achieve an additional 65 million views. Until 17 November, Essilor Stellest lenses will appear across YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Amazon Prime and Disney+. In addition, multiple display ad platforms including Teads, Dailymotion, and Ogury will ensure messaging reaches families across the UK and Ireland.
Alan Pitcher, Essilor commercial director for wholesale lenses, said: “With a significant investment, we’re leaving no stone unturned to make Essilor Stellest lenses a known brand amongst millions of parents. Our campaign is designed to captivate audiences and highlight the incredible benefits of our revolutionary product. It will help reinforce consumer awareness around myopia management and redefine how families control myopia now and in the future, forming part of our overall mission to help children see more and be more.”
A multi-channel campaign for Transitions Gen S lenses is also now running until mid-December. A video commercial is being broadcast across YouTube, Facebook and Instagram and on billboards in key locations in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Nottingham. In addition, adverts are being placed in key luxury and high-end lifestyle websites such as Vogue, GQ, and CN Traveller.

AN INDEPENDENT VIEW
Is meaningful reform on the horizon?
The future of community optometry as the bedrock of primary eye health care could now become a reality in England if the new government has the appetite for meaningful reform.
This is something that the AIO has long advocated: to better employ the expertise and knowledge of optometrists and to save the NHS a lot of time and money – not to mention avoid unnecessary sight loss. But what might it mean for independent practices?
Much will depend on the clinical services that are to be offered by community optometry, and the remuneration that will be offered for them. It is, of course, assumed that the current model of a postcode lottery in England in terms of what optometrists can offer their patients will be abandoned, and that commissioning will be on a national basis.
Many independent practices have long been delivering excellent clinical care for their patients, and it is important that the knowledge and experience of the independent sector is heavily involved in the consultation process that will take place. The AIO has signalled its desire to contribute extensively.
It is worth noting that a lot of independents have either relinquished the current NHS contract in recent years, or else significantly downscaled their NHS offering. It would be ironic if those who are arguably best placed to hit the road running with enhanced clinical services for their patients decide not to participate, because the government doesn’t get it right in terms of the service offering and remuneration.
best vision solutions for patients.”
Mat Stringer, NRC operations manager, commented: “We are thrilled to announce that Stepper Eyewear has become our first gold level digital sponsor for a three-year term. As a regular visitor to the NRC and supporter of ABDO, it wasn’t surprising that Peter was the first to take advantage of our new opportunity to promote Stepper to thousands of our visitors in the optical sector. A big thank you to Peter Reeve and Stepper Eyewear for their continued support.”

Lab3Sixty: on the up and up
Since its inception in 2021, Leeds-based Lab3Sixty has rapidly gone from strength to strength. We find out more about this dynamic company...
The initial challenges to setting up such a large optical laboratory were overcome by “sheer perseverance, a team with a ‘can do’ attitude and a wealth of knowledge to overcome obstacles that arose along the way” – says founder and managing director Scott Pearson. An original group of seven people, formerly part of Rawdon Optical, now form a growing team of 20 – all with the ambition to please the customers they serve.
Scott, who has 30 years’ experience within the optical sector, believes the company was well placed to bring a refreshing option for independent optical practices in the UK.
Having worked closely with global leaders in freeform lens production over the course of his career, Scott understood the systems and interfaces required to knit all aspects together under one streamlined roof. He says: “This was a major factor in the set-up of Lab3Sixty,” he says. “With the support of lens manufacturer IOT, and lens software designers Hawkstone, we reached our ‘go live’ date with very few hiccups.”
The Lab3Sixty team today exemplifies diversity and multiculturalism – two attributes very much aligned with the company’s ethos. Heading up customer care is Becki Pearson, who maintains control of all orders being processed on a day-to-day basis. Becki has 20 years of experience in an optical customer care environment. This is evident in her depth of knowledge across all areas of optical lenses – not just with regards to Lab3Sixty products but in the branded lenses that can also be sourced through the lab.
With 25 years’ experience in lens manufacturing, Peter Thompson oversees the production of surfaced lenses in his role as surfacing lab manager – ensuring customers’ requirements are met. “Peter prides himself on always going above and beyond to exceed customers’ expectations,” says Scott.
Nick Padget is the company’s glazing manager. “With Nick’s 40 years plus experience in glazing of optical lenses, there’s not many types of spectacles that Nick hasn’t edged,” Scott explains. “Nick has a wealth of knowledge and a skillset that are second to none; I’d argue he is one of the most experienced glazers in the UK –if not the world.”
ROOM TO GROW
Starting out with fairly-sized 6,000ft2 premises, the business quickly expanded and outgrew itself. “In late 2023, we
decided to move – and by early 2024 had established ourselves in a larger facility in Kirkstall in Leeds. We now occupy 13,000ft2 of industrial factory and office suite space, which has enabled us to expand throughout all departments with room for future growth.”
To ensure optimal performance and durability of its lenses, the company emphasises precision engineering and the use of cutting-edge materials. It typically employs advanced manufacturing techniques, such as digital surfacing and coating technologies, to achieve superior optical quality and customer satisfaction.
“We believe that our dynamic approach to providing excellent products, along with exceptional turnaround times, sets us apart from other optical manufacturing companies,” Scott says. “Digital progressive lenses can be produced and sent out on the same day on request. The same can be said for any of the products found in our main product guide. We take pride in – and promote – the fact that we are not bound by any restrictions on the products we can provide. This means we can offer all available lens designs, supporting independent practices who need a quick, friendly and fair-priced service – and one that can be relied upon.”
PRICING WITHOUT PREJUDICE
The company stocks all lens indices and base ranges to cover prescriptions from
Lab3Sixty founder and MD, Scott Pearson
-30D to +25D in applicable designs. A comprehensive offer of branded and own brand clear, photochromic, polarised and tinted lenses is also available in all designs.
“Customers are often impressed by our ability to offer an affordable option for even the most complex of orders,” says Scott, “One of our primary goals as a company is to support independent businesses by offering fair and reasonable pricing without prejudice.”
Lab3Sixty prides itself on being able to provide both conventional and freeform lens designs. The company also offers glazing services to include all types of edging requirements. There is also the option to tap into the Lab3Sixty all-in-one glazed packages. These include budget own brand Lab3Sixty frames, frames
KEY LENS DESIGNS
Lab3Sixty provides a plethora of products to its expanding customer base. Some of these include:
■ Dual side digital progressive lens designs incorporating faceform parameters to result in "the highest possible level of eyewear personalisation"

O’Neill: first name in the ocean
Company founder, Jack O’Neill
Since the middle of the last century, the O’Neill brand has been synonymous with the kit to facilitate adventure. The very core of the brand values stem from its founder, Jack O’Neill. Jack had a vision, and it was to make things to allow him to stay in the ocean for longer. In 1952, he established the first surf shop, and using World War II diver technology, developed the first wet suit to enable surfers to push their sport to new heights.
A new industry was born as Jack continued to develop surf equipment, such as board leashes, board booties and rash vests, bringing surging numbers of men and women to the sport, and the great outdoors more broadly. The brand then further expanded into a wide range of water, snow and skate sports, always bringing the same
passion for innovation to allow freedom to explore, whether that be urban or wild, land or seascapes.
THE MAN, THE LEGEND, THE SUNNIES
Last year would have been Jack’s 100th birthday. To commemorate the man, the legend that was Jack, the brand developed a signature, limited edition sun frame based on his own iconic sunglasses – the ONS
Jack 2.0. These trend-defining, limitedproduction sunglasses are available in three colours: black, silver and gold. They have polarised, beveled, mineral-glass lenses and deliver an iconic style statement, with sustainable rPET leather side shields.
In keeping with O'Neill's philosophy, the sunglasses balance both style and practicality. Crafted from lightweight stainless steel with IP plating, they're

designed to be durable and hypoallergenic. They feature silicone coating on the back of the bridge, and rubber inserts on the temple tips for elevated comfort. The leather side shields sport a lasered branded logo, and will block out light, wind or water, protecting the wearer's view, whatever they're focused on.
AUTUMN/WINTER 2024 COLLECTION
The spirit of Jack is infused through everything the brand does with the O’Neill badge on it, including its autumn/ winter 2024 optical collection. Combining California surf style with vibrant colours and classic shapes, the frames are lightweight, with an athletic aesthetic to keep up with active lifestyles and day-today exploring.
Inspired by a deep-felt love of the ocean, this innovative collection features fun, stylish shapes and a sun-drenched colour palette of ocean hues, to deliver premium quality frames that will leave wearers ready for endless summers and outdoor adventures.

Yalea: Portrait of Dreams
Sisterhood Edition
Yalea, the De Rigo house brand that’s committed to supporting women, continues its Portrait of Dreams project with a new campaign titled Sisterhood...
Last year, Yalea’s inaugural Portrait of Dreams edition, A Journey into Real Beauty, showcased the dreams, lives and achievements of 43 inspiring women. Yalea now presents its Portrait of Dreams Sisterhood Edition to exemplify the social, ethical and emotional pact built between women.
Yalea has chosen five pairs of women as testimonials for Sisterhood, sharing their stories and experiences, and their deep bonds based on affection, support and solidarity. Powerful stories of determination are told by women who, despite their different origins and backgrounds, share a sense of belonging, empathy, respect, empowerment and sisterhood for an optimistic vision of the future.
Photographed by Mihaela Noroc and styled by the Toledo sisters, Adriana and Luciana who featured in last year’s
campaign, the Sisterhood protagonists wear styles from the new Yalea eyewear collection from De Rigo.
The sophisticated and high quality styles are characterised by the use of refined shapes and colours that celebrate individual beauty. To the prescription range, Yalea has added four petite versions for those who need smaller sizes: a detail that demonstrates the collection’s focus on diversity.
MARISA AND GIGI
Better known as the Passera Sisters, Italians Marisa and Gigi Passera cultivate their love of cooking on social media and on the radio. They see cooking and the act of ‘eating together’ as a moment in which people meet and come together. For the Sisterhood campaign, Marisa and Gigi wear prescription model VYA168V col.722, and
sunglass model SYA151V col.4AL.
Style VYA168V col.722 is a bold yet elegant round acetate ophthalmic style available in black and havana. It is characterised by a tri-coloured bonding on the thick temples, reminiscent of the soft waves of the Yalea monogram. It is also available in transparent, black, havana and burgundy variants.
Acetate sunglass frame SYA151V col.4AL features an oversized square design. The front piece is characterised by elegant bondings outlined by a subtle wave detail. It is available in black, havana, blue/havana, pink/havana and beige/havana.
SARA AND SABRINA
Sara and Sabrina Guessab, French twins of Algerian origin, are models and bloggers who have gone viral for their unique and full colour style. Their ‘mantra’ is to always be

The style is available in fuchsia and aquamarine.
VALERIA
AND MARIA
Valeria De Angelis and Maria Chiara Cicolani are two Italian friends who trended on social media on their Eterobasiche page where they attempted to close the gap
between the male and female worlds using irony. For the Sisterhood campaign, Valeria and Maria have also been photographed wearing VYA168V co.722 and SYA151V col.4AL.
SILVIA AND ANA
Spaniards Silvia Moreno and Ana Araujo stand out for having created ‘social dinners’ in which a group of strangers meet to share moments and experiences with one another, reducing the use of social networks and promoting live interaction. Silvia and Ana wear models VYA167V col.700Y and SYA152V col.752
VYA167V col.700Y is a bold acetate prescription style with a slightly square front. Available in black and havana, this style also features a tri-coloured bonding on the thick temples. Other variants include green, black and grey.

With its new campaign – Portrait of Dreams: Sisterhood Edition – Yalea reaffirms its commitment to the female universe by supporting its freedom of choice, favouring its talent and rewarding its personal beauty. It invites all women to pursue their goals by feeling free and strong together, with the exceptional ability to inspire each other.
