WelcomeorwelcomebacktoVilla! It has been about 13 weeks since we last saw each other in Villa’s halls. Now, when we comeback, wewillbesurroundedwithnew people, new friends, new classes, new lockers, andnewschedules.

Although all these changes will occur, we still get to hold on to the things that make our school experience feel more constant: sitting with our friends at lunch, practicing with sports teams, walking into the cafe doors each morning, and, of course, participating in our favorite Villa traditions.

Although it may be hard bouncing backfromsummerbreak, wehavemuchto look forward to. Yes, sleeping in is a good feeling, but so is spending time with the peopleatVillaandcatchingupwithfriends in the morning while we wait for the 7:40 belltoring.

In this issue, you will read about a variety of articles including adventures (by plane or by book), advice for senior year, and products for the trendy Villa girl. We also have a special advertising section for ournumerousclubs!

IhopethatwithreadingthisSummer Issue of Towerette, you can put yourself into the back-to-school mindset, prepare yourself for a fun (yet challenging) school yearaheadofyouatVilla, andhopefullyjoin the Towerette staff!

When her father dies, she is left a small inheritance which gives her just enough of a push to escape her life and do some soul searching. She decides to do so in her mother’s quaint hometown in France. While there, she learns that her mother’s past is more of a mystery than she thought. Thisremarkablestoryisfullofvibrantdetails that bring the French countryside to life and will take you on a journey as Tempesta connects with her heritage. Personally, I was drawn in by the mystery aspect of the book, and it did not

disappoint. I enjoyed uncovering the mystery of Tempesta and watching her selfconfidence grow as she discovered more about herself along the way. The Memory of Lavender and Sage is a beautifully written story that strivestoremindusthat home is not always a place, but can be found in the people who love us.

Savoring Senior Year

Bhavishya Boga ’25

Senior year is one to look forward to manythings, frommakingmemoriestoearning coveted privileges. It is also a threshold for the future, asitiswhencollegedecisionscomeout and many know what their future holds. Like everyotheryear, senioryearhasitsvalleysand mountains. While experiencing many lasts, seniors begin thinking of a new first: college. Some common questions during this time include but are not limited to: How should I apply to colleges? What majors would I pursue? Where will I go for college? I agree, college applications trigger a fear of the unknown. But trust the process and in God’s plan.Youwillsurelyendupintherightplace! With a new year comes a lot of changes and privileges. For example, while underclassmen pick out outfits for the fall fashion show themes, seniors can choose a dress of their choice to walk down with their fathers in the fashion show. In the mother-daughter dinner event, senior moms putonashowdepictingtheirdaughtersinVilla and put up the girls’ baby photos while underclassmenwatch.

Ifeelthebittersweetnesswatchingthese events. While underclassmen take individual photos on picture day, seniors have their own separate portraits and photoshoots at different settings. One of the most heart wrenching yet desired changes is when they get to leave school early (and for the last time). These changes are reminders to make the most of what you have and to savor every moment. Afterall, everysecondisonce.

Personally, senior year is one to live up to. Whether it be sports, extracurriculars, academics, or making memories, it’s important to stay in the moment. This year may be full of lasts, but it is one where the most memories aremade.Goseniors!

Pumpkin spice is quickly filling up grocery store shelves, causing controversy: you either love it or hate it. This marketing scheme makes your go-to household food brands millions this season. It’s geniusthatthesecompaniessimplytakeyourfavorite staplesandmakeanirresistiblelimitededitionflavor. Many end up stocking up on so many of these flavored items so early that by Halloween, they’re pumpkined-out. Hot take: do pumpkin flavored thingsendforyouatHalloweenorThanksgiving? Is Summer Slide a Hoax? Current Events

Katie Treacy ’27

“Summer Slide” describes an academic phenomenon where students lose the skills they have acquired throughout their normal school year due to summer break. If the term “summer slide” has been used against you or a loved one to enforce studying during summer vacation, you may be entitled to financial compensation. I’m just kidding, but seriously, this term is simply dated and untrue. Learning canoccurnaturally!Whetheryouhitthebooks or the road this summer, there's something to be learned with each new experience, as demonstratedbycurrentVillastudents.

So how exactly are Villa girls learning outside the classroom? Emily Murphy ’27 recounts the adventures of her recent trip to Ireland, learningaboutthecountry’sexpansive history as well as her own. A visit to the Lusitania museum, WWI coastal lookouts, and castles of real nobility have certainly given Emily a new perspective for when she learns about world history this year in class. Emily also had the opportunity to observe the rich folklore and geography of Ireland, visiting St. Brigid’swellinClareandtheWishingBridgein Killarney National Park. Her family revisited the one room schoolhouse in Clare where her grandmotherwenttoschool. Emilysays,“I've grown up surrounded by Irish culture, it has always been a large part of my life, so seeing wheremygrandparentsgrewupmademefeel connectedtomyfamilyhistory.”

Even in Morristown, Emily’s family finds ways to embrace their culture, her dad acting as grand marshal for the St. Patrick's day parade in 2018. Visiting Ireland has certainly beenaninvaluableexperienceforEmily, unlike anythingatextbookcouldteach.

On a more technical note, 5 of our rising seniors were invited to participate in a 6 week program learning in the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s makerspace, working directly with professors to participate in NJIT’s most recent project, a biological crisis aid robot funded by a grantfromtheNationalScienceFoundation.

First they had the opportunity to explore the campus laboratories, interacting with college students involved in the project and learning about the advanced machinery the universityuseslikelaserandwatercutters. After this, the girls began working on the prototyping process. They have been working on a flood rescue mechanism which will be able to distribute up to a full palette of supplies to citizensduringnaturaldisasters.

Throughout the prototyping stage they learned about the pre-production processes of making a robot and swarm bots, which the mechanism will take inspiration from. Lynette Gao ’25 comments that, “[The project supervisors] treated us like actual college researchers, which is kind of scary because it's notlikeahighschoolclass,[and]theywantedus to try even when we didn't know the answer. Coffee Culture: From Ethiopia to Starbucks

When we think about coffee we think about a dark brown liquid cure for morning migraines or even intriguing drinks Starbucks baristas make us before first period. We think of Villa’s iced coffee sales or leaving our drinks in ourlockersbeforeheadingtoclass.Althoughthis istrue, thereissomuchmoretocoffeethanthat. Ethiopia, wherethefirstcoffeebeanswere first discovered, is considered the birthplace of coffee, anditscoffeeceremoniesplayanintegral partinEthiopiancultureandsociallife.

This ceremony involves roasting the beans overaflameandthenhand-grindingthebeansso they can be prepared for brewing. This process may take several hours, not just because of the lengthy process, but also the communal experience that Ethiopian society takes part in. The hosts of these coffee ceremonies usually serve three rounds of coffee: “abol,” “tona,” and “baraka,” which become weaker with each serving.Thearomaoffreshlyroastedcoffeeadds to the senses of the atmosphere and enhances theEthiopiancoffeeculture.

Coffee culture is rich with tradition and innovations;ithaswovenitselfintothehighlands of Ethiopia to the Starbucks on Morristown’s Green. When we walk into a coffee shop or click ‘start’ on our coffee machines at home before school, we are connecting with the past 1200 years of coffee drinkers. Coffee has left a footprint everywhere and in every mouth it has touched.
