On behalf of the creative team, I welcome you to Villa Walsh Academy’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Villa Walsh has a tradition of revisiting some musicals once every few years and this particular musical is one - if not the epitome of a Villa classic. The most recent staging however never saw the light of day due to its closure just one week shy of its opening in March 2020. Indeed, some of the seventh grade girls in that cast are now principals in our production today! We are so proud of their growth, along with all of our other girls for whom it is their first time to bring this iconic story to life on stage in Mother Ninetta Hall.
The story of The Wizard of Oz finds its origins in Frank L. Baum’s 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Though this novel is the genesis for the Oz intellectual property, it cannot be denied that in mentioning “The Wizard of Oz,” one instantly conjures an image of ruby slippers on a young Judy Garland dancing along a yellow brick road. MGM’s 1939 film was not the first cinematic adaptation of the story but it certainly claims the apex spot, eclipsing even the novel, its source material, in cultural relevancy and instantaneous brand recognition. Both the Muny in 1942 and the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987 drew more upon the film than the novel as inspiration for what is now known as the definitive stage musical adaptation of this first sojourn into the land of Oz.
In 1995 Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, followed only eight years later by the Broadway musical adaptation of the same name by Stephen Schwartz, forever changed The Wizard of Oz’s relationship with the cultural zeitgeist. And now, with Universal Studios’ two-part cinematic adaptation of the musical (the first half of which is still playing in theatres, continually adding to its 720 million dollars in global box office earnings), it’s almost as if one cannot avoid a nostalgic trip down the yellow brick road.
Whether one chooses to subscribe to the theory that The Wizard of Oz is an allegory for the late nineteenth century debate on the American monetary policy (demonetizing silver [the original color of Dorothy’s Ozian footwear] in favor of the gold-standard [the same color as yellow bricks]) or whether one choose to relegate the novel as a simple children’s story (which, in fact, was what the author originally intended), this story has proven itself to be timeless. The film, though certainly dated, has not lost its appeal more than 85 years later. It’s a gateway to a fantasy culture as rich as that of Carroll’s Wonderland or Tolkein’s Middle Earth, teeming with unbridled optimism which cajoles us to dream about our own sanctuaries somewhere over the rainbow and forever reminding us that there is, indeed, no place like home.
On a personal note, I would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to the Villa Walsh community: to every single student and parent or faculty volunteer who dedicated their time and talent into helping bring this musical to fruition, I thank you. This could not have been done without each and every one of you. Let us have one big round of welcome to Mr. Paul Daher who began as choir director late last year; The Wizard of Oz marks his inaugural show at Villa Walsh as music director. Finally, I cannot sing the praises loudly enough of Mrs. Ruthann Lanni who, after inviting me to fill in for last year’s Seussical and after having been my own high school choreographer, I regard not just a colleague but a dear friend. This is my last musical at Villa Walsh as I’m off to begin new artistic endeavors out of New Jersey, but knowing that future students have Mrs. Lanni to help guide them lets me know that the musical future at Villa Walsh is very bright indeed. Congratulations to everyone and thank you for supporting the arts.
-James Conrad Smith, Stage Director and Production Designer

The Villa Walsh Academy school and community takes this opportunity to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Director, Mr. James Conrad Smith, Musical Director, Mr. Paul Daher and Choreographer, Mrs. Ruthann Lanni. Your time and talents made this production a success. To our wonderful audience: There’s no place like home, and your presence truly made The Wizard of Oz feel like one!
