HOSTED BY FAME TRIVIA

FROM THE CEO It’s an Election year, and in October you will be voting again, this time in the ACT Government election. Canberra’s Clubs traditionally do not take sides when it comes to politics. Club members come from all shades of community opinion and Clubs reflect that diversity. Clubs work with all political parties. Whichever party is in Government the aim is to get the best outcomes for the community through our Clubs in a bipartisan way. This year however the Club Industry has finally said “enough is enough”. Your Club has joined with other Clubs of the ACT in asking our members to consider the future of your Club when you cast your vote at the polling booths. This edition of Club News contains a letter from the ClubsACT President, Max Mercer outlining the impacts of the Labor Greens Coalition on the Club Industry over the past decade. I encourage you to read the information contained in the letter as I believe it will put into perspective the various banners and flyers you will see in the Club over the coming months. The final straw that prompted action from the Club Industry is the support from the Labor Government of poker machines into the foreign owned Casino. Adding insult to injury Mr Barr refers to the Clubs, willing to object, as “big gambling houses”, inferring that gambling is our reason to exist. Our reason to exist is called out in the Objects of the Clubs Constitution and to generalise Vikings, like all other Clubs, exist to provide facilities, community support and a meeting place for like-minded people. The ability for the Club Industry to support facilities such as bowling greens and other sporting facilities has diminished to a point where at best they can be maintained but not improved. If the current Governments Club policy framework continues, this will soon become unviable.

bet – mandatory pre-commitment and maximum $1 wagers. This as a solution was put forward by the Productivity Commission report in 2010. At the time online gambling was not fully understood and had not reached the prevalence it has today. The Greens solution will not work and it will hurt those in the community most vulnerable. As an industry harm minimisation is a priority. Your Club has introduced harm minimisation programs that go above and beyond the legislative requirements and we continually look at ways to improve. Vikings have partnered with Lifeline Canberra to assist those in our community that are in harm’s way. The Canberra Liberals have come out in support of the Community Club Gaming Model and your Club. They are offering the industry an opportunity to change and diversify in a stable and secure environment and within a legislative framework that is sensible and appropriate. They will not allow poker machine expansion into the Casino. As the CEO of this great Club I would not be doing my job if I did not advocate for stability and security. This stability and security allows us to plan for our future and improve our business model to cater for the changing wants, needs and aspirations of the people of the Tuggeranong Valley, knowing that the contribution Clubs make to the community is not only valued by the members but is also valued by the Government of the day. Please consider your Club this October when you vote.

Both the Greens and the Labor party are advocating for a dramatic decrease in gaming machines in the ACT. Gaming Machines are enjoyed by our members and their guests and the proceeds from Gaming Machines are distributed to the community. This is unique to the ACT and is referred to as the Community Club Gaming Model. For the ACT Greens this is not enough. The Greens want to introduce a License to

ERINDALE

refurbishment PROJECT

AFTER SIGNIFICANT PLANNING AND COMMUNITY CONSULTATION WE WILL SHORTLY COMMENCE THE LARGEST REFURBISHMENT EVER UNDERTAKEN AT ERINDALE VIKINGS. THE REFURBISHMENT WILL BE STAGED OVER SEVERAL MONTHS AND THE CLUB WILL CONTINUE TO TRADE AS PER NORMAL THROUGHOUT.

FEEDBACK DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT Part of the initial refurbishment planning welcomed input from our Members and stakeholders. Surveys and Focus Groups were conducted with different Member segments focusing on the future direction of the Erindale Vikings Club. By understanding your expectations and hopes we have been able to focus the refurbishment to meet and exceed your expectations. Some of the key insights, directly quoted from Member surveys and focus groups included; “ More indoor play facilities, corners, games for kids.” “The meals don’t suit me. More food options.” “The dining room is a bit tired and unable to cope with the numbers of people that eat there.” “A club I can be proud of.”

It is this natured feedback that has influenced the future refurbished Erindale Vikings.

MEETING AND EXCEEDING YOUR EXPECTATIONS The refurbishment will transform the Erindale Club to reflect new trends in food and entertainment for our community. We will become your one-stop entertainment precinct, with multiple dining options, bars, outdoor spaces, entertainment and kid’s areas. The traditional Club layout will mould to make way for a fit-out that will rival some of the city’s top dining and bar establishments.

FOOD FOCUSED One of the major focuses of the development is the improvement of the Club’s dining offering for Members. This will include the construction of multiple dining outlets located within the venue, promising to provide Members and their guests with a more diverse food offering combined with flexible seating options. “There has been a cultural change in terms of people’s perceptions of food in clubs and elsewhere,” Anthony Hill, Chief Executive Officer of Vikings said. “People are wanting more options. They want to know where their produce comes from. They want an entertainment factor with their food. That is what we are doing here, is offering a great varied experience.” The refurbishment will see the introduction of a new casual Italian Restaurant, modern Bistro and trendy bar options. “We will branch out into different styles of food and at different price points,” Hill stated.

INTIMATE ENTERTAINMENT The refurbished venue will offer a unique, intimate setting for live entertainment. With beautiful outdoor garden settings providing the ideal location for acoustic acts to play under twinkling lights. Multiple relaxed bar environments will create the perfect spot for bands to play background music while you enjoy a beverage. We will continue to strongly support local musicians providing them with an outlet to showcase their talent and support them with ongoing bookings.

OUTDOOR ESCAPES

" There has been a cultural change in terms of people’s perceptions of food in clubs and elsewhere“

Backyard patios, terraces and outdoor dining. The refurbished venue will offer a selection of alfresco spaces to escape to all year round. Step out from the Sideline Bar down to the backyard patio, where you can sip on your drink of choice in the sunshine. Move outside with your bowl of pasta and dine under the stars.

FAMILY FRIENDLY The perfect venue for a family outing with two play areas – one indoor and another outdoor. The outdoor play equipment will have the kid’s running around on adventures while you can relax in the patio area. In the cooler months the little ones can retreat inside and play with interactive toys and digital games. Plus new kids meals at all dining outlets.

COMMUNITY GROWTH The Vikings Group employs over 200 locals and construction will put even more jobs and money into the local economy.

A VIKINGS GROUP HARM MINIMISATION PROGRAM The Vikings Group strives for excellence in all aspects of services and facilities, and our commitment to providing responsible gaming services for our Members is no exception. Our Harm Minimisation Program is an important reflection of our commitment to our Members and the community.

Recognising the potential for harm, The Vikings Group has actively taken responsibility to implement harm minimisation measures that go above what is legislatively required. A holistic program that focuses on mental health and wellbeing for our community, Members and staff. It is our belief that a successful harm minimisation program requires ownership from our staff and Members. In creating, branding and communicating our own internal responsible gaming program and messages we have assured that our staff and Members are working with a program that is genuine and suited to their needs. The formation and implementation of our own Harm Minimisation Program – Play Within Your Limits will increase accessibility to support services for our Membership and staff.

LIFELINE CANBERRA COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM A partnership between Lifeline Canberra and the Vikings Group has been formed to provide the community, Members and staff with mental health and wellbeing support, for a range of issues, not just gaming harm.

MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING STAFF TRAINING Through our partnership with Lifeline Canberra we are able to offer our staff additional training in harm minimisation and early intervention strategies. This training enables our staff to effectively monitor and support our Membership. The training is designed to empower our staff to use creditable identifiers and indicators to assess whether a Member is at risk and address the issue via referral and support. The training aims to be practical in terms of improving the delivery of responsible gaming in venue. Enhancing our staff skills to identify people at risk and intervene by respectfully engaging with patrons and offering assistance.

CRISIS AND PERSONAL SUPPORT LINE FOR MEMBERS AND STAFF COMMENCING november

Lifeline Canberra, together with the Vikings Group, will offer patrons and staff the ability to connect with a crisis supporter, via a dedicated Vikings/Lifeline phone line. The crisis line can be accessed for numerous personal issues, including alcohol, gambling, grief, addictions, relationship breakdowns, trauma, loneliness etc. 8

HOW THE CRISIS AND SUPPORT LINE WILL WORK The dedicated Vikings/Lifeline Crisis and Personal Support Line will be accessible between the hours of 10am - 5pm from Monday through to Saturday. Outside these hours from 5pm each day until club closure, and on a Sunday, the individual would be advised to call 13 11 14 – the Lifeline crisis line. A Personal Support phone will be located at each venue Reception, simply ask a staff Member if you wish to use this phone. Outside of operating hours individuals will be encouraged to either text or leave a voice message containing their first name and contact number on the Personal Support Line. This would result in the crisis supporter contacting the patron the following day (apart from Sunday) where another support call would occur.

CRISIS SUPPORTERS The crisis supporter’s role will be to work with the individual in relieving their distress, focussing on the individuals concerns, providing the individuals with coping skills and empower the client in deciding on their next steps to ensure their wellbeing. The crisis supporter will also check the client’s safety in regard to suicide, child safety and domestic violence. In addition to this support, and with the client’s permission, a crisis supporter would contact the client the following day to check on their wellbeing, offer support and enquire whether ongoing professional help have been contacted.

FUTURE PLANS FOR DEDICATED SUPPORT ROOMS A private, dedicated room will be provided at the refurbished Erindale Vikings Club. The private space also contains; water, a comfortable chair, pamphlets on gambling, addictions and relationship breakdown as well as some Lifeline toolkits to assist individuals with depression, anxiety, domestic and family violence.

GAMBLING CONTACT OFFICERS The Vikings Group currently has forty three (43) Gambling Contact Officers operating across the four Vikings Group venues. The Gambling Contact Officers act as the main point of contact for Members concerning gambling issues. The Vikings Gambling Contact Officers are readily available to discuss gambling with our Members or provide information about where to get further assistance. Our Gambling Contact Officers assist Members when filling out a “Self Exclusion from Gambling Deed” and ensure these Members no longer receive any related advertising material.

GAMBLING HARM AWARENESS WEEK 3 – 9 November 2016 Gambling Harm Awareness Week is an initiative that involves a unique partnership between local governments, the gaming industry and community groups. The week recognises that those who provide gambling products, consumers, and the broader community all share responsibility for promoting and encouraging responsible gambling. This is an opportunity for the Vikings Group to engage with our local communities and promote responsible gambling messages. During Gambling Harm Awareness Week, Lifeline Canberra and Vikings will host community event at one of our venues. The event will be an opportunity to gather and discuss responsibility in the gaming sector and harm minimisation models in this field.

FROM THE LIFELINE CEO “Lifeline Canberra is very pleased to be part of the harm minimisation program with the Vikings Group. For 45 years, we have provided Telephone Crisis Support (13 11 14) to the people of Canberra and the surrounding region. This service is possible due to the dedication of over 300 trained volunteers from our community who ensure that the phone will be answered, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As part of an Australia wide network of Lifeline Centres, Lifeline Canberra takes calls from people who are in need of support at times of crisis. The crisis may be large or small, immediate or on-going; whatever the situation, Telephone Crisis Supporters provide nonjudgmental support. One of the main elements of our phone service is suicide prevention and we regularly receive calls from those in desperate need; contemplating taking their own life. In addition, Lifeline Canberra provides a number of mental health awareness training courses which complement the suicide prevention and crisis support services. As the Vikings Group have recognised, there will be people in their community who struggle with personal crises, particularly related to excessive gambling. Whatever the crisis, Lifeline Canberra will provide a confidential support service to help that individual. We believe that working closely with the Vikings Group will enable us to reach out to people in the early stages when issues arise, so that support is available quickly. This support will form part of the Vikings Group’s services to their patrons and visitors in their role as a responsible member of the community.” Pauline Thorneloe, Acting Lifeline Canberra CEO

MORE INFORMATION The full Play Within Your Limits - Harm Minimisation Program strategy will be available to Members in venue and online later this year.

VIKINGS GROUP &

sids and kids VIKINGS GROUP ADOPT sids and kids AS ‘CHARITY OF THE YEAR’ 2016

TOGETHER WE CAN ALL HELP TO SAVE LITTLE LIVES It is with much excitement, the Vikings Group introduces its inaugural Charity of the Year – Red Nose (previously known as Sids and Kids). We are proud and excited to work with Red Nose for the next 12 months, with the partnership focussing on raising awareness of safe sleeping education, research and support services available for families in the ACT. Together we have set an ambitious fundraising target of $100,000 for the partnership and invite you to join us in reaching this goal. The funds raised will contribute to the Red Nose Research program which is focussing on Stillbirth and SIDS as well as our safe sleeping and support services for families across the ACT. Lisa Ridgley, Community Fundraising Manager for Red Nose ACT and NSW said, “We are just thrilled with the announcement. This partnership is such a wonderful opportunity for us to work with such a high-profile Club to raise awareness of our organisation as well as vital funds to support local families in need. Funds raised in conjunction with the Vikings Group will help us continue to deliver our Safe Sleeping education program for new and expectant parents and carers and offer counselling support to anyone who needs it following the death of a baby or child.”

ABOUT RED NOSE Red Nose is dedicated to saving the lives of babies and children during pregnancy, infancy and childhood and supporting bereaved families.

“We have reduced the number of sudden and unexpected deaths by 80%.”

The Vikings Group recognise our responsibility to support non-for-profit organisations in the community and aim to assist organisations whose values align with our core beliefs, and those of our Members and Staff. These values include supporting our community, increasing social benefits and a commitment to continue to contribute effectively to the development of our community. “The Board, Management and Staff of Vikings are dedicated to making a positive difference in the community we are a part of. Our Members participated in the selection of our Charity partner for the coming year and we can genuinely say that the great work of Red Nose is close to the hearts of all involved with our Club. To work with Red Nose will be a very rewarding experience,” said Vikings Group CEO, Mr Anthony Hill.

Annually 3,200 families experience the sudden or unexpected death of a baby or a child. Through world class research, advocacy and evidence based education we passionately believe we can put an end to this.

Red Nose Safe Sleeping is an education campaign that provides new mums and anyone who cares for a baby or child with life-saving information on how to sleep baby safely and reduce the risk of SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents. It also includes information on Tummy Time, Safe Wrapping and Cot-to-Bed safety. Our information is about empowering mums to make the right decision when it comes to safe sleeping and safety in the home. Red Nose Safe Sleeping education and awareness campaign was introduced in 1990 and since that time we have reduced the number of sudden and unexpected deaths by 80% saving over 9,000 babies lives. Our support services provide grief and loss support to families through a range of services including a 24 hour bereavement support line, counselling and grief and loss resources. Our new Red Nose Grief and Loss website will be launched in October 2016 and will be instrumental in supporting families within the ACT and nationally – particularly rural and remote families. For more information on Red Nose visit www.rednose.com.au.

VIKINGS IS THE HOME OF SPORTS NRL Finals After 26 rounds and what will no doubt be an electric Finals series, it will all come down to just 80 minutes of heart-racing footy! The NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final is set to hit ANZ Stadium and you can catch all the lead up matches and grand final live at Vikings. The Grand Final has set the stage for some of rugby league’s most famous moments, this year’s Grand Final will no doubt deliver again.

AFL Finals Every deft-defying mark, every tackle, everybody-on-the-line smother - they’re all for the finals. For 23 rounds, everyone has been waiting for the same thing, the finals. Make sure you catch all the AFL final action at Vikings.

WE ARE THE UC VIKINGS Now in its third season, the Buildcorp National Rugby Competition (NRC) has unleashed some of the most exciting rugby talents Australia has to offer. Last year, the University of Canberra Vikings finished second in NRC last season, falling to Brisbane City at the final hurdle. In 2016 there’s a buzz around Canberra that the UC VIkings are ready to go one better, with some of Australia’s best players representing the ACT in red, white and black. The UC Vikings are comprised of players from each of the ACT’s seven Premier Grade clubs, with many of the Brumbies fringe players squaring up for a shot at professional contracts, via the NRC. With seven games scheduled for 2016 – four of which will be played at Viking Park at Erindale Vikings– there’s plenty for rugby fans in the ACT to be excited about between August and October.

24

The UC Vikings will field a team this year littered with Super Rugby talent, and capped off with a number of players we will surely see in a Brumbies jersey in the years to come. With a lot of great rugby on offer for fans, the UC VIkings will be a team you won’t want to miss in 2016. Last year’s competition saw an average of 9.2 tries every match with the ball in play an average of 35 minutes each game (compared to 32 minutes of Super Rugby). In 2016, the Buildcorp NRC will continue to be at the forefront of innovation with a revised points structure seeing six points awarded for a try, two points for a conversion and two points for a penalty goal and drop goal. Support our UC Vikings at Viking Park and come to the club to watch the broadcasted NRC games.

The installation of Solar Panels at Lanyon provided renewable energy to the Club and has reduced our carbon footprint. Erindale Vikings donates excess food to OzHarvest who then delivers the food to charities, providing much needed assistance to vulnerable men, women and children across Canberra. The Vikings Group is about to enter a contract agreement with Remondis who will manage the separation of waste and recycling. YOUR CANBERRA CLUBS ACT ELECTION GUIDE Article Written by Max Mercer, President ClubsACT

So what’s different this year? Why are there signs and posters in many of our clubs warning of the danger ACT Labor presents? Let’s put it simply. The Labor-Green coalition government is killing community clubs. Over the last 4 years, 10% of Canberra’s clubs have been forced to close. This is a direct result of decisions taken by Chief Minister Andrew Barr and the ACT Green Shane Rattenbury. A money-grab from increased taxes, charges and levies on not-for-profit clubs has seen:

RATES

GAMING TAX

UP by over 200-300% in four years for some clubs. One small club has seen their rates rise from $14,000 in 2012 to $55,000 currently, and they will rise again by 8% in the coming year.

UP twice in ten years for large clubs, despite declining revenue. For longer than you might realise, your Canberra clubs have been forced to operate within a constantly changing and increasingly precarious legislative environment. For over a decade the Government has imposed a succession of new charges and taxes on clubs – some of which are completely unique to the ACT or at quantum well above those found in other states. The sector has also been forced to compromise constantly.

LIQUOR LICENCE FEES

UP and now the most expensive in Australia. $5186 (ACT) vs $510 (NSW) for trading until midnight. Further increases will be debated in August. TAP WATER COSTS

UP by over 400% and double the price of Sydney Water. Water pricing increased again on 1 July.

34

So with some of this in context, last year we were optimistic that outcomes from the Public Accounts Committee Inquiry relating to clubs would create greater certainty for our sector. That it would enable clubs to work towards and invest in greater diversification. We were expecting wonderful and positive things to happen, but we were wrong. The Chief Minister provided assurances that if the community clubs could gain bi-partisan support for change his Government would assist clubs to achieve their objectives. Imagine our disappointment when, despite gaining that support, less than half of that committee’s recommendations were agreed, and the ones selected will make little material difference to club operations in the future. Then, barely six months later, Barr and his Government broke another promise, which now presents itself as an imminent threat to the future viability of remaining clubs. Chief Minister Barr has now made a decision to support the foreign-owned casino ahead of your local club. If this proposal goes ahead, it will be the last straw for many clubs. We know that if the casino is allowed to have poker machines, then clubs across the ACT will close. It happened in Sydney and it will happen here.

“Canberra’s unique not-for-profit model that ploughs revenue back to the COMMUNITY and into sport and recreational infrastructure will be destroyed. Profits will flow offshore rather than into our local community.”

Canberra’s unique not-for- profit model that ploughs revenue back to the community and into sport and recreational infrastructure will be destroyed. Profits will flow offshore rather than into our local community.

BARR AND RATTENBURY ARE PUTTING SUPPORT FOR OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES AT RISK. AT RISK Over $11m in donations to sporting groups and charities every year.

AT RISK Funding to over 1,000 community groups which rely on clubs to operate.

AT RISK The maintenance of over 400 hectares of urban green space for community sporting use compared with 300 hectares of sporting grounds maintained by the ACT Government.

AT RISK Six golf courses, twenty bowling greens, three cricket fields, five football fields, tennis courts, a basketball stadium, yacht club, a race course and a bmx track.

AT RISK Facilities for families and seniors.

AT RISK Over 2,300 local jobs.

To help stop Barr and his Government from destroying your local club, and the community groups they support, please call or email your local MLA and ask why they have turned their back on clubs and our community in favour of a foreign-owned casino operator.

BMX CHAMPS THANK THE VIKINGS GROUP Recent Rio Olympian and World Number 1 BMX racer, Caroline Buchanan came from humble beginnings with the Vikings Group. Since her days training at the Tuggeranong BMX Club, Caroline soared to the top of her sport. She’s taken home an impressive five elite World Championships, 15 Australian National Championships and the wins keep coming! Despite her global success, Caroline is still closely affiliated with the Vikings Group in Canberra. Caroline is grateful to the Tuggeranong BMX Club for building the foundations she needed to get to where “Without she is today. “The BMX community in Canberra would suffer severely without places like the Tuggeranong BMX Club. Not only did they provide somewhere to train while I was growing up in Canberra, but they also gave me vital financial and in-kind support to encourage me to pursue my dreams,” explained Caroline.

“My story starts with a big thank you to the Vikings Group,” said Felicia. “I race BMX locally, interstate and internationally and I’ve been fortunate enough to bring home a World 7th place, a USA 4th place and podium results nationally.” “Without the Vikings’ generous support to all sports, including BMX, many of Canberra’s aspiring athletes wouldn’t be able to attend competitive sporting events. The club works so hard to improve and maintain our facilities and tracks to help us train all year round.”

the VIKINGS’ generous support to all sports, including BMX, many of Canberra’s aspiring athletes wouldn’t be able to attend competitive sporting events”.

“Considering how costly it is to compete in certain sports, aspiring to be a professional athlete can be very difficult. Particularly in a sport like BMX where the equipment, entry fees, travel and accommodation costs can add up quickly. I’m so grateful to the Vikings for all they’ve done for me,” she concluded.

40

Felicia, local BMX racer and another member of the Tuggeranong BMX Club, almost gave up her dream because of the financial pressures associated with the sport. However, thanks to support from Vikings Erindale, Felicia is now following in Caroline’s footsteps on the road to success.

“I recently won a scholarship and the Junior Sport Person of the Year for the Vikings Group” Felicia continued. “I was over the moon to be recognised for my hard work. We had just returned from the USA, so my parents were running low on funds. The Vikings scholarship helped me enter and funded me to attend the World Championships.”

“My racing has finished for this year because of an injury. But my next challenge has just begun. I have more determination to make the finals than ever before. I couldn’t live my dream of becoming an Olympian without my parents, my sponsors, and most of all, the Vikings Group. Thank you all for believing in me, one day I will make that dream come true.”
