FROM THE CEO Welcome to the Autumn edition of Club News, our first edition for 2019, I hope everyone had an enjoyable break over the Christmas and New Year period. We kick off this year with the announcement of a major promotion! We want to send four lucky Members away on the holiday of their dreams. With over $140,000 in holidays and cash to be given away as part of our Ready, Jet, Set, Go promotion. Be sure to visit any of our four clubs between 18 March and 1 June for your chance to win and take that holiday you have always wanted. In February we held the Annual Sports Awards. This year we honoured a great member of the Vikings community, Reg Bates for his outstanding volunteer contribution at Tuggeranong Vikings Lawn Bowls. Reg recently retired as Secretary of the Club after 15 years of devotion working 7 days a week seeing the Club become one of the pre-eminent organisations under the Bowls ACT jurisdiction. Reg was one of 5 major award winners at the Awards night which focussed on the contributions of our local athletes, coaches and volunteers. I congratulate all the award winners, It’s an honour to be surrounded by very passionate and talented individuals, I am looking forward to seeing how everyone progresses in the future.
Our favourite time of year is also upon us, with all the sporting action returning. For those who have not yet seen the new Beer Garden down at Erindale Vikings, I encourage you to enjoy the live action of the John I Dent Cup from this prime location or a social gathering on a Sunday with some live music. It’s hard to believe we are already talking about Mother’s Day, Easter and Anzac Day – but as always our venues have a program of fantastic events and special menus for the whole family so be sure to check them out. I look forward to seeing you in one of our Clubs soon.

Tuggaranong Valley Cricket Club Tim Floros enjoyed a remarkable year for Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club and also for the ACT Rockets indoor cricket side. Tim’s long list of accomplishments over the last 12 months include being named Tuggeranong Cricket Club Player of the Year, the Batting Award, Captains Award and being named in the team of the year, as well as winning DB Robin Medal for the best player in the ACT Cricket 1st Grade competition. Tim also won the Floros Medal for Best Player in the ACT for Indoor Cricket over the past year, to accompany his World Cup victory with the Australian Indoor Cricket team. Tim was named the Indoor Cricket International Player of the Year in 2017, meaning he was the best Indoor Cricketer in the world at the time, before his older brother Matt stole it off him this year. Tim capped off 2018 by scoring 219 for Tuggeranong in a one-day match, the highest score in the club’s history. Tim’s good form has seen him selected for the ACT Aces representative team which contested the regional Big Bash finals at the Sydney Cricket Ground last month.

ver 240 guests attended the 2018 Annual Sports Awards at Town Centre Vikings on Friday, 15 February 2019. The evening recognised the amazing achievements of 50 finalist nominees across five major awards. The finalists made up an extremely competitive field which saw many outstanding volunteer, coaching, team and individual achievements mentioned across local, national and international level. All nominees were fantastic ambassadors and representatives of their local club and the Tuggeranong community. 10 Affiliate Club Scholarships were also presented to athletes on the night, which will assist in covering the costs of their academic and sporting pursuits over the coming 12 months.
Tuggeranong Vikings Lawn Bowls Club Reg has recently retired as Secretary of the Lawn Bowls Club after 15 years of devotion and working 7 days a week, seeing the club become one of the pre-eminent organisations under the Bowls ACT jurisdiction. Reg has bid for and won the hosting rights of many Australian/ACT bowls series, and his devotion to the club has ensured the game of bowls is enjoyed by both members and visitors alike. He has planned and organised community and fundraising events for other local causes amongst the Vikings Group affiliated clubs and community, and in 2018 was awarded Clubs ACT Heart of the Community Award Winner. Reg is a Life member of the club, and was previously an AFL player for the Melbourne Demons.

Tuggeranong Vikings Basketball Club Blake celebrated an outstanding 2018 season being selected to represent Australia on two occasions. His year started with selection in an Australian team to compete in a tournament in Germany in April, where the Australian team won the silver medal. Later in the year Blake was selected to represent Australia at the under 17s World Championships in Argentina in July, being one of only two lower aged players selected in the side. Also, this year Blake played a pivotal role helping the ACT take home a silver medal at the National Championships, and was rewarded with a scholarship at the NBA Global Academy at the AIS. Blake is only 16 years old and is already an amazing 204cm (6’8”).
At the completion of the awards guests were treated to the amazing tunes of local artist Steve Amosa and enjoyed some delicious canapes and dessert from the team at Baamoo Bistro.

South Canberra Tuggeranong Athletics Club Mike is credited with having a sound depth of coaching knowledge and plays an integral role in the day to day coaching and development of many ACT and Australian athletes. Mike has been an Australian Athletics High Performance Coach since 2017, and in 2018 coached Kelsey Lee Barber to a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games. Mike assists in the implementation of an ongoing program of biomechanical servicing and research for athletes and coaches to enhance performance.

Joyelle Calisthenics Club Samantha and Valeria competed for the first time as a duo in 2018 in the ACT Senior Duo competition. The pair convincingly won the ACT championship, subsequently selected to represent the ACT at the Australian Championships. Samantha and Valeria came first at Nationals, being named National Senior Duo Champions. This amazing feat was the first time in the 30-year history of the event that an ACT team has won the title. The national winning routine was a parody inspired by Frankenstein, an incredibly entertaining item that resulted in a standing ovation to go with the national title!

VIKINGS FISHING CLUB The Vikings Fishing Club has been busy enjoying the warm summer currents flowing down the east coast with a wide range of tasty pelagic's on offer. The Salt water trips have been very popular with all members bringing home a good feed, the fresh water trips have been a little less attended with the lowering water levels and boggy boat ramps due to a dry spring.
GLENDA HALL SHIELD: TUGGERANONG VALLEY 7-119 (M MAYOH 58; E EDWARDS 2-20) BT EASTLAKE 118 (J KING 63*; M MAYOH 2-12) BY THREE WICKETS AT CHISHOLM OVAL Not to be outdone, the Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club Men took out the Konica Minolta Cup T/20 Title on Sunday the 20th of January. Under lights at Phillip Oval, Tuggeranong proved too good for Ginninderra, successfully defending 6-135, with Ginninderra finishing up 14 runs shy. The Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club Men have now qualified for the inaugural Fox Sports National Premier T20 Championships, where Australia's best Premier Cricket teams will face off to be the T20 national champions. Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club will travel to Adelaide for the 5th and 6th of March and play against the other State and Territory T/20 winners!!
TUGGERANONG VALLEY CRICKET CLUB TAKES OUT ACT TWENTY20 DOUBLE Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club Women and Men took out a rare T/20 double on the weekend of 19th and 20th of January, with the Women’s side taking out the Glenda Hall Shield T/20 Title on Saturday the 19th of January. The Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club Women beat Eastlake, chasing down Eastlakes 5/118 with 2 balls to spare – 7/119! Megan Mayoh the player of the match taking 2/12 with the ball, and making 58 runs.
VIKINGS RUGBY - 2019 JOHN I DENT CUP In 2018 Vikings Rugby enjoyed tremendous success, winning three Premierships (1st Grade, Colts and Women), featuring every Grade in their respective Grand Final and winning the ACT Club Championship. This year our motto is to ‘Raise the Bar’, to acknowledge that as a Club we recognise that we shouldn’t rest on our laurels, that we need to perform better than we did in 2018 to enjoy the same level of success and leave a fitting legacy as a Viking. We are again led by Head Coach Nick Scrivener who took the Vikings to Valhalla in 2018. Thanks to the great attendance, intensity and dedication displayed by all the players, volunteers and coaching staff so far this preseason, the Vikings have their sights set on another memorable season in 2019.
Some of the highlights of the last 12 months: Apr 17: 16 Club members traveled to the NT to fish the run out of the wet season on the Mary River for 3 days. Many Barramundi were caught with 2 over the meter mark with the largest caught by Dave Armstrong at 1.08 meters. Apr 25: Anzac Day at Lanyon Vikings with club members running Two-Up. Over $1300 was raised during the day and donated to The Veterans Support Centre. May 12: Berrmagui Bait and Tackle put on a soft plastics training weekend on the Bermagui River with some valuable new skills learnt. Jun 30: Held our social night at Town Centre Vikings with Trivia, a great feed and an awesome band to dance the night away. Sept 24, October 24, December 1 & February 2: Bermagui club trips to our beloved Club House, with some healthy snapper and a feed of Flathead for everyone. Nov 13: The Fishing Club supported the Vikings Torana Club by cooking the large BBQ at the Torana Nationals at Viking Park. Nov 12: Mallacoota 3 day Club Trip. 26 members with a heap of juniors made the long trip to Victoria to fish the beautiful Mallacoota estuaries with Bream and Flathead the main target. Member Laurie Ryan was woken when his reel started screaming and after a long battle he landed a 10kg 1 meter long Jew fish. A great effort on light bream tackle and a new club record for Jew fish. Dec 12: Huge Christmas Party with all the trimmings at Viking Park Dec 31: Fishing Club Vice President catches his first striped marlin at 3 meters and 90kgs, 40kms off Ulladulla.
