FROM THE CEO elcome to the Summer 2018/19 edition of Club News. I feel like a broken record, but I can hardly believe we are already at the end of another year. 2018 for Vikings Group has been a busy year, we have seen the re-launch of our Erindale Club after 8 months of renovations, the delivery of a very successful Charity of the Year program in support of OzHarvest Canberra and a fast but entertaining season for the Canberra Vikings. Through it all I am continually impressed by our membership who get behind everything we do, I cannot thank you enough for this; we exist for our Members and the support we get from you enables us to do what we do. In October, Vikings Group attended the reinvigorated ClubsACT Community Awards. Collectively, ACT Clubs have a powerful presence, as an industry we provide support to over 1,000 community groups and call more than 200,000 Canberrans our Members.

of net gaming machine revenue that Clubs currently give back to the community, Clubs will now also be required to contribute an additional 0.4 per cent towards gambling harm prevention and 0.4 per cent towards community charitable causes. I can also confirm that the regulations about what Clubs can count towards their community contributions will vary to previous years. It is unclear what impact all of these changes will have to our business and we are currently seeking to understand them better. Once this is more clear I will update you all. Our Clubs are a hive of activity at this time of year, with festive season celebrations and gatherings. This year our Erindale and Lanyon Clubs will be hosting Christmas Day. Each year these events are sell outs and I know tickets are selling fast, so if you plan on joining us get in quick and make a booking. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas, a happy and safe New Year and I look forward to seeing you in 2019.

Vikings Group places a high importance on the programs we run to ensure our community is supported. To this end, we were humbled to have received four awards and one highly commended for our community programs. In my last message I outlined to you the announcement made by the ACT Government regarding changes to the Community Contribution scheme. I can now confirm that on top of the 8 per cent

Anthony Hill Vikings Group, CEO

DEDICATED LIFELINE SUPPORT ROOM Vikings Group has launched its Dedicated Support Room at Erindale Vikings – a space that provides access to confidential Lifeline support and counselling for people dealing with a range of wellbeing issues. The room provides a quiet space where users can access Lifeline support, as well as Lifeline support packs. Vikings Group CEO Anthony Hill says the room is an opportunity for the Group to provide wider support to its Members, ensuring people can get help from trained professionals in a safe and private space. “It’s important for us to help our Members in a practical way in all that we do, and we understand our role is ongoing in helping people address wellbeing issues,” Anthony says. Lifeline Canberra CEO Carrie Leeson, who attended the opening, says it’s not only a great space to help Vikings Group Members with personal issues, but also a chance to highlight the prominence of mental health in the ACT. “Any avenue to reach and support people who may be facing wellbeing issues is imperative, we know that one of the things that can deter people from contacting Lifeline is not having access to a quiet space where they can speak freely without anyone hearing,” Carrie says. “Not only will this room provide that quiet space, but we hope by it being so accessible to the Vikings Group membership it will also enable us to reach people in the early stages when issues arise, so that support is quickly available.

6

“I congratulate Vikings Group on executing this initiative and being part of the ongoing solution,” she says. The Dedicated Support Room is one of a number of initiatives to be implemented as part of Vikings Group Harm Minimisation Program which offers mental health and wellbeing support to patrons and staff. As part of the harm minimisation program Vikings Group staff undergo training from Lifeline Canberra to effectively support and monitor its membership. Member for Brindabella, Joy Burch MLA who also attended the opening, says it is excellent to see the Vikings Group recognising the need for a support space for people who may be experiencing difficulties. “It’s fantastic to be able to launch this Dedicated Support Room to care for those in need. Be it through counselling, a Lifeline support pack, or just a quiet and safe space they can visit. “I also want to acknowledge the important work that Lifeline do and thank them for their contribution to the community. “I congratulate the Vikings Group on creating this space as part of their recent refurbishments and in line with their harm minimisation strategies,” Ms Burch says.

NEW CHEF, NEW LOOK, NEW MENU

MEET THE CHEF Meet the new head chef behind the kitchen at our new bistro, Chisholm Bistro. Raju has built a brand new tasty menu, featuring; classic chicken schnitty's, wood fired pizzas, wagyu beef burger and 10-hour braised lamb rump. Why did you become a chef ? I always had an interest in the ingredients that bring a dish together, along with a passion for cooking while growing up, so it seemed the perfect choice to become a chef.

What has been your best day in the kitchen throughout your career? My favourite moment in the kitchen is in the middle of service when you look around and see everyone working hard, doing individual tasks that come together to present a meal for our guests. This to me is magic! Then, my best day in a kitchen was preparing and serving a 17 course special menu to guests in the ballroom at Grand Hyatt Muscat.

What's your favourite go-to ingredient when cooking? People should never underestimate the basics of spices and accompaniments, these are what actually finish off a dish.

Who do you look up to for inspiration and why? I am always interested in what other kitchens are doing and what our guests are saying. I like to visit other restaurants and speak with the owners and chefs as well as come on the floor and speak with our guests daily to ensure we are providing a good experience.

Why did you join the Vikings Group? I was very impressed with the community work that the Vikings Group do and wanted to become a member of a team that contributes in this way.

What is your best moment from working in kitchens over the years? As chefs, our passion is conveyed in the food we cook. The best moments for me come when a guest takes the time to say they enjoyed the food experience, this really means a lot and continues to inspire us.

What is your favourite dish on the new Chisholm Bistro menu? The wood fired pizzas with the crisp base are fantastic however my personal favourite is the Quinoa & Roasted Pumpkin Salad, it is fresh, healthy and a little out of the ordinary for a club menu.

2018 Canberra Vikings 30

Canberra Vikings season unfortunately came to end at the Semi-Final stage in 2018, going down to the Fijian Drua in Lautoka. The game was the second time Vikings visited Fiji in three weeks, and were run down by a Drua side playing exciting rugby in front of a large and vocal home crowd. Although unable to match the heights of 2017, there was still many success stories to emerge from the 2018 campaign. Young guns Jordan Jackson-Hope, Darcy Swain, Tom Ross, Len Ikitau, Ryan Lonergan, Rob Valetini and Noah Lolesio all showcased why they are names to watch for the future in Australian rugby and will all be pushing for Brumbies game time in the Super Rugby competition next year. Vunipola Fifita was rewarded from his strong performances for the Vikings with his first professional rugby contract, signing with the Brumbies for the 2018 season. Vikings players Tom Banks, Pete Samu and Rory Arnold joined the Wallabies squad for their Japan and European Spring Tour following the defeat in Fiji, and young backrower Rob Valetini also joined the Wallabies to gain some experience after being identified as a future Wallabies player. At the end of season awards presentation held at Town Centre Vikings, inside centre Jordan Jackson-Hope was announced Player of the Year after an exceptional season. Outside centre Len Ikitau was announced Best Back of the Year, and second rower Darcy Swain Best Forward of the Year. Seth Going was announced Best Team Man for all his efforts off the field. Entry was free to all home games in 2018, giving everyone the opportunity to see current and future Wallabies up close and personal at no charge. Instead an emphasis was placed on collecting donations towards the current Vikings Group Charity of the Year, Marymead. We are proud to announce over $1,000 was raised at Canberra Vikings home games in 2018 to contribute towards the target of raising $100,000 in total for Marymead this financial year. A big thank you to our valued partners NCG Services, Aristocrat, South.Point Tuggeranong, Coca Cola Amatil, Canberra FM, Bradley Allen Love, O’Neills, Robert Oatley Wines, Canberra Milk, Clean Master Services, Club Warehouse, I-Med Radiology Elastoplast and Brumbies Rugby.

APPRENTICE TO GREENKEEPER Craig Devoy began his apprenticeship as a Greenkeeper with the Vikings Group in September 2015 and has been an active member of the Viking Park team helping to maintain the grounds of Erindale, Chisholm and Lanyon Vikings, as well as assisting community organisations; Erindale College and Gowrie Playing Fields. In particular, Craig has put a massive effort into maintaining the Chisholm Cricket Pitch for the Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club, receiving a lot of praise for his skills and output on the condition of the pitch from not only local teams but also visiting.

What do you enjoy the most about your role? The responsibility in the role, problem solving and working autonomously with a supportive team and manager to call on when in need of guidance.

Challenges in your role? The WEATHER – Not knowing if it will be sunny or rainy. We also had Pat Cummins-Fast Bowler and Josh Hazlewood play recently, I felt a lot of pressure to make sure it was all under control and was a success.

Challenges in Study? Going back to school to study was not something I thought I would ever be doing, but studying something you like, as well as having a supportive manager, made it a lot easier.

What does an ordinary day look like for you? Wake up for a 6:30am start, I then begin watering the greens followed by a cricket roller in the mid-afternoon so the green is “weekend game ready”. I then schedule my week to know what's coming up so I am ahead.

Will you continue your studies in Sports Turf Management? There are unlimited opportunities in this field of work. I am thinking about completing the Diploma but before I get stuck into that, I would really like to travel abroad and play some cricket in England. It would be a good opportunity to work, play cricket and broaden my skillset while seeing the world.

We have heard excellent feedback on the work on the Cricket Pitch at Chisholm – How often does that require maintenance to keep it so pristine? Dedication, six months of the year, a lot of hours, attention to detail and love of the game.

Were there any surprises in your role? It was an eyeopener, when you play a sport, you don’t realise how much is involved in keeping the grounds in such good condition - it brings a different perspective. There are a lot of ways to get the job done but the same outcome eventuates.

We would like to congratulate Craig on successfully completing his Certificate III in Sports Turf Management at Canberra Institute of Technology.
