FROM THE CEO elcome to spring in the beautiful Tuggeranong Valley. Winter has come and gone and I think we are all happy to see the back of the minus degree morning starts. With so much that has happened over the last three months and so much planned for the coming three months we have a jam packed Club News edition for you. With spring comes all the football finals and what better place to watch them than at one of the Vikings Clubs. The NRL & AFL grand finals will be screening in all our sports bars. Enjoy a drink or two and graze on some bar snacks as you cheer for your team in the comfortable surrounds. Don’t forget to book for dinner as the bistros are sure to be extra popular during finals time. The National Rugby Championship is upon us once again and the Canberra Vikings kicked off the season with a convincing win over the Melbourne Rising. Once again Nick Scrivener has put together a strong team representing clubs from across Canberra as well as Brumbies and Wallaby representatives. The Canberra Vikings will be playing two home games in September on Saturday 14th and Saturday 28th; they will play again at home in October on Saturday 5th and Friday 11th before hopefully embarking on another finals campaign. The games are exciting and the standard of the NRC competition is exceptional. Best of all, entry to all Vikings home games is free. Bring the family and enjoy an afternoon of Rugby at Viking Park.

The Beer Garden at Erindale is the perfect place to meet family and friends for that Sunday afternoon catchup. Looking over the football oval shaded from the sun and right next to the kids outside play equipment, the Beer Garden at Erindale is a great place to relax this summer.
The Canberra Vikings are not the only rugby team on show this Spring. The Rugby World cup will be showing throughout the tournament at all Clubs. Why not come

2019 Canberra Vikings
The Canberra Vikings have assembled for their 2019 NRC season, which commences on August 31 2019 in Melbourne. Our boys spend their first two weeks on the road, before welcoming Brisbane City to Viking Park on the 14th of September. The Vikings squad is brimming with talent and consists of Wallabies, Brumbies and some of the local John I Dent competitions rising stars. Led by Head Coach Nick Scrivener, the Vikings, who reached the semi-final stage last season only to fall to the Fijian Drua in the Pacific Islands, have named a strong-looking group of players that includes full Wallabies internationals Tom Banks, Joe Powell, Pete Samu and Blake Enever. There’s a real emphasis on youth amongst the group with promising young talent such as Junior Wallabies props Bo Abra and Angus Wagner, hooker Lachlan Lonergan, and backs Noah Lolesio, Bayley Kuenzle and Len Ikitau, set to take the tournament by storm. Lock forward Darcy Swain has been named as Captain of the Canberra Vikings team that will compete in the 2020 National Rugby Championship (NRC) which kicks off this weekend. Swain, who was part of the Plus500 Brumbies squad that reached the Semi-Finals of Super Rugby in 2019, played a dozen matches in the tournament having made his debut at that level the year before. The Brisbane-born second-rower is no stranger to the NRC having played seventeen times for the Vikings since his debut in a 2016 match away to the Sydney Rays and will become the seventh player to lead the Vikings in the competition following in the footsteps of Fotu Auelua, Jarrad Butler, Robbie Coleman, Blake Enever, Tom Cusack and Ben Hyne. “It’s a huge privilege to be named captain this year,” Swain said of his appointment as skipper of the squad. “Having been in this environment and learning from guys like Cusack and Hyney, it’s an opportunity that I’ll definitely relish. The Canberra Vikings National Rugby Championship challenge for 2019 began with a visit to Melbourne to take on the Rising on Saturday 31 August, and will include four home matches, all at Viking Park. CAPITAL FIELD ARCHERS Bronwyn Kinnin I’d like to introduce you all to my new love 'Archery', more specifically Capital Field Archers (CFA). We shoot traditional bows, long bows and compound bows. Three years ago I’d never even heard of Field Archery, today I get out to the range any chance I can. CFA is very much a family oriented club, with members as young as four years old. We are located on Smiths Road just south of Tharwa, a quick and easy drive from Tuggeranong. We have 3 courses spread out through the scenic bush setting overlooking Namadgi National Park.
THE TUGGERANONG VIKINGS BADMINTON CLUB The Tuggeranong Vikings Badminton Club (TVBC) offers coaching clinics for school age children and adults. We are one of only two clubs in the ACT to provide badminton coaching. Children as young as 6 years old and seasoned social players turn up at the Erindale Centre on Mondays to learn the sport, and to improve their skills from our accredited coach.
The first time I picked up a bow and fired off the first arrow I was hooked for me it’s about the wonderful families; the beautiful outdoors and of course the bows and arrows. So if you love the outdoors, challenging yourself, having a laugh and embracing all life has to offer, then consider coming and having a go at this absolutely fabulous sport. Coaching sessions for juniors make use of the BWF Schools Badminton programme (https://shuttletime.bwfbadminton. com/), focusing on the fundamentals of the game from basic badminton skills, eye/hand co-ordination and court movement. Advanced sessions are tailored to suit participants playing levels, focusing on footwork, technical and tactical aspects through sparring and multi-feed drills. Badminton has gained popularity and demand for coaching is on the rise in the Territory. The Club has a growing waiting list with demand exceeding court facilities. The Club is supported by the Vikings Group in making badminton more accessible and developing the sport at the grass root level, nurturing the young to enjoy the sport and providing a pathway for State representation. A successful story from TVBC is our Junior member Pascal Souksavat. Pascal is a Vikings Group 2019 scholarship recipient, and the Territory’s sole representative, currently competing in the U19 Badminton Australian Championship (7-13 Jul 2019) in Mandurah, Perth.

VIKINGS FISHING CLUB RAISING MONEY FOR VIETNAM VETERANS & VETERANS FEDERATION ACT Now in its seventh year, the Vikings Fishing Club have again provided a donation to the Vietnam Veterans and Veterans Federation ACT through their fundraising efforts during Two-Up on ANZAC Day. Since beginning this partnership, the Vikings Fishing Club have donated over $13,000 to this cause. The Vikings Fishing Club ran Two-Up at Lanyon Vikings and encouraged patrons to make a donation towards this organisation which represents veterans of all conflicts from World War II to Afghanistan. They have almost forty years’ experience helping with claims in all of the Military Compensation schemes, with highly skilled, fully trained and qualified Advocates and Pensions Officers. Representatives from the Vikings Fishing Club and Vikings Group presented the cheque to the Treasurer, Mr Lyall Camp on behalf of Ward Gainey, President, during a recent visit to the facilities located on Burkitt St, Page ACT.
