FROM THE

CEO

elcome to the Winter 2018 edition of Club News. So much has been happening in your Clubs since the last publication. There was a hive of activity in the Clubs as we celebrated Easter, commemorated Anzac Day and spoilt our mums on Mother’s Day. To those that chose to spend their Anzac Day at one of our Clubs, thank you. Collectively you helped raise over $1,300 for the Vietnam Veterans and Veterans Federation ACT, an organisation who represent the veterans of all conflicts from World War II to Afghanistan.

board this year who have dug deep and donated some excellent items, so come along and help us reach our fundraising goal of $60,000. Soon we will find ourselves in the thick of winter sport! Both Erindale Vikings and Lanyon Vikings will be the places to be if you are wanting to catch some of the 2018 FIFA World Cup action. Otherwise, as always, the three State of Origin Games will prove to be an entertaining watch in front of our big screens – be sure to take advantage of some of our State of Origin promotions. I look forward to seeing you in one of our Clubs soon.

To those members that joined us at the Charity of the Year trivia night, all I can say is what a fantastic effort! With over $7,000 raised on the night and I cannot wait to see what we achieve at the Dollar Ball on 23 June, our final fundraising event for this year’s Charity, OzHarvest Canberra. Last year the Ball was an event to remember and I know this year will be even better, tickets can be purchased via www.eventbrite.com. au. We have some fantastic sponsors on

Canberra Vikings UPDATE

Canberra Vikings are excited to return in 2018 to participate in the National Rugby Championship, Australia’s domestic rugby competition that brings Wallabies, Super Rugby and amateur Club Rugby players together to play in a fast and exciting competition at the conclusion of Super Rugby. The competition features teams from all around Australia, plus the exciting Fijian Drua side. Canberra Vikings finished minor premiers in last year’s competition, and unfortunately fell at the final hurdle, losing the Grand Final in front of a vocal and passionate Canberra crowd at Viking Park to a strong Queensland Country side led by Brad Thorn.

Vikings Group, CEO Anthony Hill says the coaching team is incredibly well-rounded and is very confident they have the expertise and skill to lead the 2018 Canberra Vikings team. “It was important we selected a range of coaches who had local experience but could also draw on national and international knowledge,” Anthony says. Nick says he aims to work closely with the John I Dent coaches and the Brumbies to build a balanced squad for 2018. “Canberra’s John I Dent Cup is a really strong competition and showcases a lot of rugby talent,” Nick says. “The local competition must always be an important part of the players pathway to the Canberra Vikings and ultimately the Brumbies and beyond.” Team Manager, Denzil Fox and Head of Performance, Byron Field also form part of the coaching staff for 2018.

After the departure “Canberra’s John I Dent Cup is a really of 2017 Head Coach Stay tuned for strong competition and showcases announcements Tim Sampson to a lot of rugby talent,” Nick says. “The regarding the squad the Western Force, and draw over the Canberra Vikings local competition must always be are delighted to coming months, an important part of the players reveal the coaching with the competition pathway to the Canberra Vikings and beginning the and management team for 2018. Community KHAAMBURRA NETBALL , TUGGERANONG NETBALL A SSOCIATION & THE SMITH FAMILY WORKING TOGETHER The Junior Development Netball Program is a joint initiative between Khaamburra Netball, Tuggeranong Netball Association (TNA) and The Smith Family to introduce Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth to netball through skilled based learning. The Program encompasses youth aged from 6 through to 13 years, with 34 children currently involved in the eight week program. Two young Aboriginal coaches are a part of the Program and run the kids through their paces each week, teaching them the basics of netball. Karen Parter, the Coordinator from The Smith Family’s Growing Healthy Families Program has been proactive and working with marginalised Aboriginal children, young people and their families to increase their social connectivity with services in the community. Karen said “The Smith Family initiative enables young children to participate in sporting activities they would normally be excluded from due to multiple barriers. It allows them to gain confidence and independence, and learn leadership and team skills. The skills they learn through this program can be adapted in their everyday life and support their learning in the classroom. The program’s success is due to the collaborative working relationship between The Smith Family, the Tuggeranong Netball Association and the ACT Community Bus Service who provide a safe and culturally appropriate environment. These kids are empowered and connected”. As a result there has been an influx of kids from the Program joining existing club and school teams to play in the regular netball season. A total of 16 kids have registered with a team and are now playing on Saturdays as a result of the Program with a further five kids already involved in clubs.

FOURTH GRADE LAWN BOWLERS TAKE OUT BOWLS AC T PENNANT SEA SON The Lawn Bowls Club concluded their Bowls ACT Pennant season in April with four grades making the finals and three of them progressing through to the Grand Final. After finishing the season in second position, fifth grade were unfortunately knocked out in the preliminary final. Sixth grade finished the season in second place and progressed through to their grand final only to fall seven shots short to Bungendore. Third grade finished the season in second position and progressed to the Grand Final and in a nail biter went down to local derby rivals, Weston Creek, by two shots. Fourth grade finished the season on top and progressed to their Grand Final to take out the only flag for the club beating Weston Creek, also in a nail biter, by two shots. Overall a great year for the mighty Vikings lawn bowlers with four out of five grades making the finals.

VIKING S RUGBY CHARIT Y DAY FOR OZHARVEST Vikings Rugby will be hosting a Charity Day in 2018 to support the Vikings Group Charity of the Year, OzHarvest. There will be a number of activities throughout the day to support fundraising for OzHarvest. To celebrate the occasion, 1st Grade will be wearing a commemorative strip which will be auctioned off at the after-match function, with proceeds going to OzHarvest. At a Glance: 16 June 2018, 10:30am – 7:00pm Viking Park, Wanniassa The event is free for all to attend

Upcoming Events

The Regional Manager of The Smith Family, Olga Srbovski has supported the partnership with the TNA. “The Growing Healthy Families Program has focused on supporting the most marginalised and socially excluded Aboriginal children, young people and their families. Opportunities like this give our children the confidence to reach their full potential and broaden their perspective on life and future outcomes. We can’t do this on our own and the partnerships The Smith Family forms with community services and organisations allow us to link children into new experiences. Through this project 35 children have benefited.” The President of Tuggeranong Netball Association, Jonathan Toze, is pleased to support this initiative, “This is such an excellent initiative between Khaamburra Netball, The Smith Family, and us, allowing the opportunity to play sport to deliver on a broader theme of social inclusion and reconciliation. It really delivers on TNA’s push in recent years to be a leader in community engagement and indigenous reconciliation. On behalf of TNA, I am so proud to be involved in this grassroots initiative.” “It’s more than just netball, this program is about providing these young girls and boys with a support system to thrive. Week in, week out, we are providing pastoral care, we pick up and drop off in a community bus, we provide snacks after each session, we do what we can to ensure these kids are engaged and feel like little athletes. It’s just been a bonus that so many of our kids are moving into permanent netball teams.” said Karen Flick from Khaamburra Netball. Khaamburra Netball has a strong focus on healthy lifestyles and encouraging families to be active. This is the foundation for developing a culturally strong and diverse environment for our community.
