FROM THE CEO elcome to the Summer 2019/2020 edition of Club News. It’s been another busy year for the Clubs and collectively we have once again achieved great things. This year we have raised $75,000 out of our $100,000 target for Marymead. These funds will be used to build a new Care Cottage for children and families in need. We will continue to raise money into next year and I thank all the Members for helping us raise these funds. We have also supported 50 affiliated teams across 38 different sports, this equates to 7000 athletes in the Tuggeranong Valley belonging to a Vikings Group Affiliate Club. We continued to look for the best ways possible to provide our Members with Clubs and facilities that are comfortable and relevant as well as making the Vikings Group an organisation our Members can be proud to be part of. And we have also continued to look to the sustainability of our Clubs and for ways we can ensure our community links remain strong. As you are aware the Club model has changed in the ACT, this change has accelerated through Government policy over the past 10 years and even more so in the past four years. Unfortunately, in my opinion, Government policy has hindered change rather then enhance it. As a result, we continue to see Clubs struggle and, in some cases, close their doors permanently. As Vikings Group enters its 40th year I cannot help but be proud that through all the change we have experienced we have stayed true to our core, and that is to support the community that supports us.
Congratulations to Member #12894 who won a brand new BWW 118i M Sport as part of our One Sweet Drive Away promotion. We hope you enjoy your new set of wheels!
Looking ahead, in 2020 we will see the ACT election and over the coming ten months we will work to engage with our local candidates and provide you regular updates on the policies that not only affect your Clubs but also the Tuggeranong Valley. We will be able to show the full effect the changes to the Community Contributions Scheme has had, articulate each parties Club specific policies, providing our assessment on the impact it will have on the communities that rely on Clubs for support. We look forward to positive engagement with each candidate and will do our best to fight for the sustainability of our Clubs. In October, Vikings Group attended the ClubsACT Community Awards, we were humbled to have received four awards and one highly commended for our community programs, further cementing the important role these programs play not only in our community but in individual’s lives. This year saw another fast and furious National Rugby Competition. The Canberra Vikings once again represented the ACT with pride producing some fantastic rugby with nail biting finishes against strong teams representing Fiji, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, NSW Country, Queensland Country and Brisbane City. Each match had Super Rugby and Wallaby representatives donning the colours of their respective NRC teams and the competition was a fantastic success. Unfortunately, the Canberra Vikings fell at the final hurdle going down to Western Force in the Grand Final. I would like to congratulate Nick Scrivener and all those who supported the team as well as the players on a great campaign.

s r a e y 40 STRONG It started, where all great things start, over a few beers. A simple idea between mates with a common interest in Rugby led to the Tuggeranong Valley Rugby Union and Sports Club becoming a reality. And, on 12 December 1979, after three years of planning and development Erindale Vikings opened. Back then the licensed club was one room with 204 members, five staff and four affiliated teams - Tuggeranong Valley Rugby Union Club, Tuggeranong Vikings Baseball Club, South Canberra Tuggeranong Athletics Club and Tuggeranong Vikings Hockey Club. All four Clubs still with us today having made large contributions to their respective sports in Canberra. Now, as we reflect on our 40 year history, we are proud to say we have stayed committed to our core objects; these objects have guided the Club through its evolution, furthermore these objects have helped us navigate the sea of change. We remain here to foster and encourage sport in the Tuggeranong Valley, provide sporting, recreation and hospitality facilities for our Members and the community, promote social interaction and build a sense of community. From our early days of one licensed room, we now have four licensed clubs servicing the Tuggeranong Valley. We have over 40,000 members and we support 50 affiliated teams across 38 sports, with over 7000 athletes proudly wearing the Viking Head on their team shirts. When you look at these figures and compare them to the population of the Tuggeranong Valley, which in the 2016 Census was 85,154 people, almost half of the Tuggeranong Valley population is somehow connected to Vikings Group. It is that connection that we have in the Valley and with our community that has enabled us to continue to grow. And grow we have. In the last 12 months alone, we have built and opened Badger & Co, a stand-alone pub located at the ANU. We have helped keep bowling alive in Queanbeyan by going into partnership, with the Queanbeyan Sports and Community Club, to launch Campbell & George a licensed club. And we have not just seen growth in our establishments, in our 40 years we have continued to grow as an integral partner with our community donating $40 million over 40 years. With this money we have helped support vital charities like OzHarvest Canberra, Marymead, Ronald McDonald House and Lifeline Canberra just to name a few. We have also been the platform for rising stars, creating pathways for our up and coming athletes. Athletes including Michael Bevan, Joe Roff, Caroline Buchanan, Kelsey-Lee Barber and Christian Lealiifano all donned the Vikings Head in their early sporting careers. As our 40th year unfolds we will continue to reflect and celebrate on all we have achieved. We thank you our Members, you are at the heart of what we do, we thank you for continuing to support us as we grow so we can ensure the sustainability of your Club.

CLUBS ACT AWARDS Vikings Group has once again been recognised for its contribution to the Tuggeranong Valley at the ClubsACT awards on Monday evening at the National Press Club
“What really humbles me, is the acknowledgement we continue to receive for our efforts in providing responsible gaming services, through our ‘Play within your Limits’ harm minimisation program.
Taking out, Best Re-Developed Venue (Erindale Vikings), Best Responsible Gambling Initiative (Play within your Limits), Health and Wellbeing (Charity programs) and Support of Amateur Sport.
“Vikings Group strives for excellence in all aspects of our services and facilities and our commitment to the role we play in providing responsible gaming services is no exception.
The Awards, which recognise achievements across club operations and community work brought the industry together for a night of fun, recognition and reflection. Vikings Group CEO, Anthony Hill, was humbled by the recognition “We don’t do what we do for awards, albeit nice to be recognised, at the end of the day we are here to provide great services to our Members and to give back to our community. “Our nearly 250 staff work tirelessly to provide to our members and their guests with the best that Clubs have to offer and it is fantastic that their hard work has been recognised. “Our sports and community programs are built to contribute to the effective development of the organisations we work with and we are seeing lasting impacts of this’’ Hill says. Vikings Group has a long history of working within the community and since its inception has given back $40 million dollars over 40 years to a range of charitable organisations, programs and support activities. This year alone Vikings Group has raised $70,000, of the $100,000 target, for Marymead to build a new care cottage for children and families in crisis.
6
“Our Play Within your Limits program is a holistic program that we are very proud of, it uses in-venue strategies that focus on the mental health and wellbeing of our community, our members and our staff’’ Hill says. The program, which was launched in 2017 uses a variety of strategies, a key one being a dedicated support room located at Erindale Vikings, a room where Vikings Group members can access support via Lifeline services and resources in a safe and secure environment. This room was a first of its kind for Clubs in Australia. “Equally important to the success of this room is the training our staff receive to provide the appropriate level of support to members who may need to access this room. This training includes courses on being an accidental counsellor, mental health awareness and dealing with people in difficult situations. I would like to thank our frontline staff for playing not only an active role in this initiative but in the wellbeing of our members in general. “We understand our role is ongoing in assisting individuals to overcome mental health and wellbeing issues that may lead to gaming harm and we are extremely proud to be part of the ongoing solution.’’ Hill says.
Enjoy morning tea or a light lunch at Erindale Vikings with Canberra entertainer Phil Major, with show tunes, carols and dancefloor hits from the likes of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra with a little bit of ABBA thrown in.

2019 Canberra Vikings 22
The Canberra Vikings season unfortunately came to end on the losing side in the Grand Final in 2019, going down to the formidable Western Force in Perth 41-3. After a heart stopping injury-time try by Tom Banks and a clutch conversion by Noah Lolesio in the Semi-final, the team went west full of confidence. Injuries to key players hampered the Vikings efforts and, in front of a large and vocal Perth crowd, could not match it enough with the professional Western Force outfit. Although falling at the final hurdle, there were still many success stories to emerge from the 2019 campaign. A number of young up-and-comers were blooded, Bo Abra, Nick Frost, Seamus Smith and Fred Kaihea all showcased why they are names to watch for the future in Australian rugby. Lachlan Lonergan’s rise through the age grades ranks continued and was rewarded from his strong performances for the Vikings with his first professional rugby contract, signing with the Brumbies for the 2020 season. At the end of season awards presentation held at Badger & Co, inside centre Irae Simone was announced Best Back of the Year after an exceptional season. Second rower Blake Enever was announced Best Forward of the Year, and back rower Pete Samu capped a stellar competition to be named Player of the Year. Entry was free to all home games in 2019, giving everyone the opportunity to see current and future Wallabies up close and personal at no charge. This year the Canberra public raised $1665 towards Rural Aid through gold coin donations.
A big thank you to our valued partners NCG Services, Aristocrat, South.Point Tuggeranong, Coca Cola Amatil, Canberra FM, Bradley Allen Love, O’Neills, Robert Oatley Wines, Canberra Milk, Clean Master Services, Club Warehouse, Elastoplast and Brumbies Rugby.

VIKINGS IN THE
y t i n u m m Co TUGGERANONG VALLEY WOMEN'S BOWLING CLUB Have you ever considered Lawn Bowls as a sport and not know how to make the first step?
VIKINGS FISHING CLUB The Vikings Fishing Club has been keeping busy over the first part of the year, from holding the ANZAC Two Up at Lanyon Vikings, Freshwater trips to Jindabyne and Anglers Reach Salt water away trips to Greenwell Point and Eden as well as many trips to Bermagui. We also had 12 members participate in our 5 day Mega Trip to Dundee Beach in The Northern Territory, bringing home some nice Mud Crabs and fillets of Jew fish, Barramundi and Golden Snapper. Our annual Social night this year was held at Vikings Lanyon, in the form of a Trivia night, with great food and a good night had by all. We have turned many sausages to raise funds at Bunnings BBQs and are currently running a boat licence course for unlicensed members. We still have a few trips and events planned for the remainder of the year and are working on our calendar for next year. Events coming up soon: Mallacoota 9,10,11 Nov Buckenderra 23 & 24 Nov Bermagui 30 Nov & 1 Dec Christmas Party 7th Dec The drawing of our huge Burly Bucket Raffle is on the 15th of Dec, so make sure you grab a ticket. If you are interested or wanting to know more about our club, meetings are held downstairs at Erindale Vikings every second Tuesday except for January. We have guest speakers talking about all things fishy at most meetings. All members of the Vikings Community are welcome to come along and find out more about our fantastic club. Membership of the Vikings Group is required for all members of the Fishing Club.
SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB The Senior Citizens Club meets every Monday and Friday from 10am to 2:30pm for card games, scrabble and indoor bowls. The Tuggeranong Valley Women’s Bowling Club was established in 1995 and is based at the Vikings Town Centre Sports Club in Greenway where we have bowlers of all ages enjoying the sport. Members of the club enjoy social and competition days in a fun and friendly environment. The club organises bowls competitions, holds an Annual Sports Day, plays competitive Pennants (both mid-week and weekends) as well as raise funds for a charity each year selected by the incumbent President. The Club is a great club with all members being regarded equal and everyone is supported whatever way their talents and abilities allow. Age is no barrier for Lawn Bowls with the current ACT Champion of Champion Singles winner, Chloe Morrison, being one of our younger members. New members are welcome and enquiries can be made by telephoning (02) 6293 4305 and leaving a message for a member of the ladies’ club to contact you. Alternatively, you can email for more information on bowls @vikings.com.au Free coaching tuition can be provided with suitable times being negotiated with our accredited coaches. For more information and to see what is currently happening at the Tuggeranong Valley Women’s Bowling Club you can visit our website at www.tuggeranong.bowls.com.au

e c n a d n Lio Lion dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and other Asian countries in which performers mimic a lion’s movements in a lion costume. The tradition of performing the lion dance on the eve and throughout the New Year is a strong tradition that is still practised today. Lions are commonly used for happy and auspicious occasions such as celebrations, weddings, birthdays, grand openings, festivals, events and most importantly, Lunar New Year.
