FROM THE CEO Welcome to the summer edition of Club News and my final address to our members for 2016. 2016 has been a year of elections. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the 5 members for Brindabella elected to the Legislative Assembly and thank all the candidates for the time they took to consult with Vikings over the many issues that are at the heart of the Tuggeranong Valley Community. Your Club is a proud contributor to the social fabric of the Tuggeranong Valley and we will continue to work with Government and the Community to ensure our role is valued and our contribution is positive, vibrant, relevant and most of all something you as members are proud to be associated with. In October Vikings was proud to formally announce Red Nose, formally Sids & Kids, as our Charity of the Year. The Charity of the Year is an initiative to support one major charity a year in addition to the many other community initiatives we support. Our members and staff contributed to the selection of Red Nose as the charity for the coming twelve months. It is such a worthy cause and something I urge you to support through the various events and initiatives you will see over the coming twelve months. We have set a fund raising target of eighty thousand dollars and we are well on our way. However your support is integral to our achieving this goal, please give generously and help Red Nose provide the much needed support and research required to save little lives.

to promote a holistic program that focuses on mental health and wellbeing for our community, members and staff. The program builds on the great work already done by Clubs ACT and the wider Club community. Part of the Vikings Group mission is to make everyone feel welcome in our venues and to ensure an enjoyable experience. Part of this enjoyment is about feeling safe. Our harm minimisation program aims to ensure this. To be part of a solution you need to take ownership of a problem, no matter how big or small. There is a potential for harm in the provision of gaming if not managed responsibly. This is something we can control and we will do so in the hope that owning the issue will also give us a valued role in being part of the solution. Christmas is on the doorstep and I would like to take this opportunity to wish our members a safe and enjoyable festive season. This issue of the magazine will provide you a choice of events giving you plenty of opportunity to celebrate with family and friends at a Vikings Venue. I hope to see you around the Clubs enjoying our hospitality.

I am proud to see the launch of the second phase of our harm minimisation program, “Play within your limits. Vikings have partnered with Lifeline Canberra

T

A little About Sil he Vikings Group have teamed up with Delites Cakes and Sweets owner Silvana (Sil) Cooper to help raise funds and awareness for Red Nose, in the sweetest of ways.

Sil has generously designed and created oneof-a-kind Red Nose, Sweet Cheeks cupcakes for purchase only at the Vikings Group. These delicious hand-made and hand decorated butter cream cupcakes feature the cutest baby faces with the iconic Red Nose. With every Sweet Cheeks cupcake sold at Vikings we will donate a dollar back to Red Nose – how sweet is that! Sil, a 35 year old mother of three, is passionate about the Vikings Group partnership with Red Nose and is waving the usual hourly fee associated with making these amazing cupcakes! “ I am over the moon to have been considered by the Group to help with their charity of the year efforts. As a mother to young children Red Nose is a cause close to my heart and I am hoping my cupcakes can play a part in helping save little lives.”

Sil has always loved anything to do with cooking and food, as a child her mother was always making something amazing in the kitchen and Sil’s love of cooking really grew from that. But it was later in life that Sil realised that desserts and baked goods were her calling. “I realised how much I loved the cakes and sweets about 8 years ago, I decided to make a novelty cake for my Niece and that’s when I realised…I had so much fun doing it. So I guess that’s where it all started.” Sil started making novelty cakes and sweets for family members and friends and learnt a lot from trial and error. Then in 2012 when Sil was pregnant with her third little one she decided to go back to school to study a Certificate III in Patisserie. When Sil was granted a license in 2015 to become a supplier within ACT the Vikings Group were quick to stock her cakes at our Lanyon Vikings café, choosing her products over a big business supplier.

Sweet Cheeks, Red Nose Cupcakes Available at all Vikings Venues. $5 Member Price, with $1 donated to Red Nose.

“Thousands of Canberrans enjoy themselves at our clubs, and we want to make sure they can do so in a safe and supportive way,” Vikings Group CEO Anthony Hill said. “These help services are available to anyone who needs them, or even if you would just like to talk to someone.” MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING TRAINING

A VIKINGS GROUP HARM MINIMISATION PROGRAM Vikings Host Community Forum to Tackle Gambling Harm: Gambling Harm Awareness Week Leading mental health professionals, gaming staff and the club industry contacts came together on Thursday 4 November as part of a community effort to promote Gambling Harm Awareness Week. Key community organisations including Lifeline Canberra and Relationships Australia were in attendance at the event held in the Sideline Bar, Erindale Vikings. Lifeline Canberra and the Gaming and Racing Commission spoke to the attendees about the impacts of gambling in Canberra, and how the industry can better support its patrons. Industry representatives, Clubs ACT and The Vikings Group discussed our responsibility in the gaming sector as well as harm minimisation efforts. Lifeline Canberra Training Manager Tracey McMahon stated at the event that, “Sadly there is still a stigma associated with gambling which often prevents those affected from seeking help. We’re hoping through this combined community effort we can make a real difference to that.” Canberrans looking for support to overcome gaming harm can access free and confidential help services via our dedicated support lines, and speak with a professional trained Gambling Contact Officer at any Vikings Club.

Our first Mental Health and Wellbeing staff training session with Lifeline Canberra kicked off in October. The training is part of our Play Within Your Limits program, which is a partnership between Vikings Group and Lifeline Canberra to support patrons and minimise harm in our community. Through our partnership with Lifeline we are able to offer our staff additional training in recognising distress and crisis support. This training enables our staff to effectively monitor and support our Membership. The training is designed to empower our staff to use creditable identifiers and indicators to assess whether a Member is at risk and address the issue via referral and support. The training aims to be practical in terms of increasing the awareness around mental health. Enhancing our staff skills to identify people at risk and intervene by respectfully engaging with patrons and offering assistance. DEDICATED SUPPORT PHONE Now available at all four Vikings Club Receptions, the Crisis and Support Phone is accessible to any individual who wishes to connect to a Lifeline Crisis Supporter. The dedicated phone line can be used for multi-faceted issues including – alcohol, gambling, grief, addictions, relationship breakdowns, trauma, loneliness etc. If you wish to use the phone to speak with a Lifeline Crisis Supporter about any issues you may be facing, please ask a Vikings Staff Member. Our staff will arrange the phone for you and a private space for you to make the call.

Time to get a nosey...

WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON WITH THE VIKINGS GROUP AND RED NOSE..

MORNING TEA FOR RED NOSE

VIKINGS GIRLS DAZZEL AT CANBERRA TAKES 2 Almost $20,000 raised in September at Canberra Takes 2 event for Red Nose! Well done to all Vikings Group staff involved (especially those who braved the stage)! Romana Peckham our very own Receptionist at Town Centre Vikings, volunteered her time and vocal cords to the event and took out the Judges Choice Title, along with her signing partner Mickey Sulit.

The Vikings Group proudly hosted the brand launch of Red Nose (formerly Sids and Kids) in the Sideline Bar, Erindale Vikings. We were happy to donate the venue, catering and decorations for the launch - which went off without a hitch! Romana also kindly performed at the Red Nose Christmas in the City launch event, dazzling attendees with her stunning voice! A big thank you to Romana for being a fantastic staff ambassador of our Charity of the Year Program.

RED NOSE CHRISTMAS IN THE CITY We can hardly believe that Christmas is just around the corner. It feels like yesterday that David Richards together with Red Nose (formerly SIDS and Kids), officially claimed the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for most lights on an artificial Christmas tree – a record previously held by Universal Studios Japan for five years running. Red Nose has once again been tasked with the enormous job of helping to bring the Canberra Christmas tree to Canberra’s CBD. Featuring its own integrated sound and light show, the Christmas tree will be a focal point for the nine-day festive celebrations. In the City Canberra is introducing a series of food, drinks, music, handmade and arts markets. Food themes such as Burgers and Beers, Sweet Treats, Cocktails and Canapés and Street food will have you and your family coming back day after day, night after night. The themed food and craft markets will 38

replace last year’s tunnel of lights and will sit beneath the canopy of the majestic London Plain trees within Ainslie Place and spill out into Civic Square. Twinkling fairy lights will illuminate the space welcoming families and friends, young and old. Official festive celebrations will kick off on Friday 16 December with a free Christmas concert, including Red Nose ambassadors and ABC Television’s Lah-Lah’s Big Live Band and Australian singer-songwriter Shannon Noll. This year’s concert will coincide with the first of the Christmas Food Festival markets, Burgers, BBQ and Beers, and the opening night of the Handcrafted and Gift markets. Markets will continue for nine consecutive days and nights and will wrap up on Christmas eve. During this time, Santa photos will be available beneath the tree with all proceeds to Red Nose. Volunteers will be positioned at the entrance to the night markets and entry is by cash donation or tap and go! Visit www.rednose.com.au for more information and details.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY IS JUST WHAT WE DO.

VIKINGS GROUP LEND A HAND AT RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CANBERRA FOR THE “MEALS FROM THE HEART” PROGRAM 12 Vikings Group staff members donated their time to cook a meal for the families of Ronald McDonald House Canberra and it was truly an amazing experience. As part of the “Meals from the Heart” Program, staff members selected their menu, prepared, cooked and served the food for up to 30 people on two different nights.

TOUCH OF LIFE LIFELINE CANBERRA CORPORATE TOUCH DAY It was great to be able to assist the families this way as it meant the Vikings Group could put their skills to use and provide the families with a home-cooked meal during this stressful time. The Vikings Group provided games and activities for the children to enjoy and to put some smiles on their faces. Staff were humbled by the experience and the Vikings Group look forward to returning to Ronald McDonald House Canberra in December, just in time for a Christmas Roast.

On Friday, 21 October Vikings Group staff participated in the Touch of Life Corporate Touch Day hosted by Lifeline Canberra with the support of RSM and Touch Football Australia. A keen team of 13 staff members from across the Vikings Group took to the field and showed off their skills amongst other local businesses. 100% of the registration costs were directed to crisis support and suicide prevention here in the Canberra community. Well done to the Vikings Group team!

CANCER COUNCIL RELAY FOR LIFE The Vikings Group was proud to host the South Side Relay for Life at Viking Park. A big thank you to our staff Members for getting involved supporting this incredible event. The Cancer Council raised over $35,000 at the event which will go towards cancer research and support services right here in the ACT.

After six days of jammed-packed competition, the girls from Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club (SCGC) in Erindale placed 2nd overall behind the Delta Gymnastics club from Queensland. “This is a truly exceptional result for the girls, their coaches and the club. LANYON UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB Established in 2001, Lanyon United Football Club is a community football club based in the south of Tuggeranong, catering to adult football players of all abilities. In 2016 Lanyon United boasted eight teams across men’s and women’s state league football competitions, including both men’s and women’s masters competitions. 2016 marked another successful year for L.U.F.C with four of our teams finishing top 4 of their respective competitions. Both of our women’s teams were unlucky to be knocked out in the finals; Our first grade men’s team also featured in the finals; and our men’s over 35’s team finished 1st overall, and were unlucky to lose the Grand Final. With the off-season upon us, the club is still running numerous events, including an intra club six-a-side tournament, twilight friendly social games and pre-season training sessions. For full details on all upcoming Lanyon United activities visit our Facebook page http://facebook.com/lanyonunited As a community club we aim to accommodate players of all abilities and we readily welcome new players. and Sam Hawkins all winning their age groups. Hamish McLachlan and Erin Chant performed well coming 3rd in their respective age groups. The event featured many thrilling and outstanding matches all weekend long. The Vikings Challenge recently reached the national ranking of a silver event helping bring more talent to the tournament. This event wouldn’t be possible without donations and co-operation from the Vikings Group, Yowie Squash, Active Leisure Centre, Stellar and Karakal. This tournament also wouldn’t be running if it wasn’t for the help of Matt Dale (Event Director and Data Logger), Helen Chant and Kim Hawkins (canteen directors), Bryson Hawkins (manager of Yowie Squash Canberra) and many volunteers who helped out in the canteen. The weekend was fun for all and showcased local talents for the future. Written by Hamish - one of our squash juniors

VIKINGS LAWN BOWLS KEEPS THRIVING The Vikings Lawn Bowls Club, based at the Town Centre Club continues to thrive and justify its status as the pre-eminent lawn bowls club in the immediate area. Recently we presented our Annual King and Queen of the Valley Tournament which attracted 80 quality bowlers including people from Melbourne, Sydney, and several other locations in NSW. The Tournament is generously sponsored by the Vikings Group and was an outstanding success. In the past year or so, we have hosted the Australian Under 18 Championships, several State Championships and completed a very comprehensive and crowded Club program which includes over 25 local Championships and Tournaments. Our members also compete in various events from as far away as Temora, the Gold Coast and Southern N.S.W. The Club has a very active social bowls program. Games are played on 6 days a week (weather permitting!!!) This program helps engender a very amicable, friendly, supportive and welcoming environment regardless of one’s bowling prowess. We have an exceptionally strong panel of volunteer coaches which welcomes intending new bowlers of all ages including persons with

visual, hearing and /or physical disabilities. The Club has unrestricted disability access throughout the premises. The coaches conduct a free introductory coaching courses, all the time encouraging participants to make lawn bowls their sport of choice. We supply all the necessary requirements needed at those sessions. Presentation Day Celebrations Our combined male and female membership is in excess of 260 bowlers all of whom are very committed Vikings members and passionately proud of their Club. “I went and saw him but I couldn’t bring myself to hold him because he just looked so peaceful, like he was just sleeping,” Ian said. “It took me two years to go out to the cemetery and see him without being an absolute wreck.” In losing a child, Ian’s family is not alone. Each year in Australia, 3,200 children under the age of four died suddenly and unexpectedly – that’s more than double the national road death toll. Break this down, and that’s nine children each day who will never get to reach their full potential; and nine new families in Australia each and every day who have their world turned upside down forever.

EPIC RIDE TO REMEMBER LACHIE Cycling almost six hundred kilometres is tough, according to Canberra cyclist, Ian Cross. But it’s the love this grandfather has for his first grandchild that has inspired him to undertake this gruelling challenge. Ian, accompanied by his friend, Geoff Williams, plans to embark on this epic cycling tour from Canberra to Batemans Bay in a week’s time, to raise money and awareness for Red Nose (formerly SIDS and Kids). Ian’s grandson, Lachie, died of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) when he was just six-weeks-old, which is an ache, he says, that becomes harder to bear as every year passes. Out of the country on a work trip at the time of

Lachie’s death, Ian said his journey home was the longest flight he’d ever had. “At the time I was deployed to Christmas Island for work and you couldn’t get a more remote, desolate place in the middle of the Indian Ocean,” Ian said. “Lachie was only two-weeks-old when I left, I thought I’d go away and do this trip as there would be plenty of time to spend with him as he grew up.

The nature of SIDS means it’s hard for the families of the children to get closure. It is a silent killer and it can strike without warning and we still don’t know why. Ian and Geoff were given a farewell with fanfare thanks to support from the Vikings Group.

“My family were all in Canberra and I couldn’t help them, I was more than 10,000 kilometres away and I felt useless as a father and a grandfather because I couldn’t be there.”

Members from the Tuggeranong Vikings Cycling Club in peloton joined the cyclists to send them off after celebrating with a BBQ breakfast on Saturday morning at Erindale Vikings.

Mr Cross said the days that followed Lachie’s death were some of the worst of his life.

Vikings Group also provided Red Nose branded uniforms for both riders.
