This time last year I kicked the year off by letting all our Members know we were about to embark on the largest refurbishment to our oldest club, Erindale Vikings. I am happy to say, after a very busy 12 months of construction, the new Club is complete. I would like to thank all the Members for their patience during this time. We hope you have been enjoying the new offering, an offering we built off an extensive Member consultation process. I am very proud of the new Club and the services it brings to the community of Erindale and surrounding suburbs. I would like to also thank the staff that were involved in this project. It was a complex process and a credit to all that were involved.
This time of year, I also love seeing our venues come alive, particularly our Sports Bars that host all the sports action live in surround sound. Be sure to catch the action on our big screens at one of our venues.
We are approaching the last fundraising period for our current Charity of the Year, OzHarvest. It’s been an absolute delight working with OzHarvest over the past year and I am so proud of the efforts we have made both in fundraising and awareness raising for their cause. With the final fundraising events approaching I would like to encourage you all to participate in these events and help us reach our goal of $60,000. We have a lot going on in our venues over the coming months with Easter, Anzac Day and Mother’s Day all fast approaching and I look forward to seeing you in one of our venues soon.

In mid-February we held the Annual Sports Awards. Each year I am continually impressed with the level of commitment, dedication and achievements we see from the athletes, coaches and administrators of our Affiliated Sports Clubs. Sport in the Valley is part of the reason for our being and to see it thrive across so many codes and so many ages is uplifting. And so, while I always find it hard to say goodbye to Summer, it is an exciting time of year. With the re-commencement of most of the sports seasons I really look forward to seeing all that our Affiliated Sports Clubs achieve this year.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back Laura Howarth, Venue Manager at Lanyon Vikings. Laura has returned to work after 12 months of maternity leave and I send a huge thank you to Michael Peel for all that he achieved in the role while Laura was on leave. You can say hi to Mick at Town Centre Vikings where he will be exploring and using his knowledge to assist in his field.

ERINDALE VIKINGS It's finally time to say hello to the new Erindale Vikings and, it is a real game changer.
E
ight months ago, Vikings Group embarked on its biggest refurbishment of a venue to date. At the outset the Group's objective was, what it always is, and that is to provide superior hospitality services and facilities to our Members. We are excited to say‌ The wait is finally over! The jackhammers and wet-cutters have finally left the building, and in their place is a brand new multi-outlet state of the art club, reinvigorating and shaking up the traditional club experience. Erindale Vikings is now the proud home of not one but four dining options, two kids play areas, a beer garden, sports bar, TAB and a gaming floor. For those who have not yet seen all of the renovations, let us take you on a little tour and we hope to see you in the new club soon.

The Cookery Sideline Bar The Sideline Bar and TAB has literally been at the centre of the refurbishments for the past eight months, by this we don’t mean any physical changes to the space itself as this was done not that long ago. The Sideline Bar and TAB, which was once found at the front of the club, has played host to an array of hoarding going up, coming down, going back up and coming back down as the refurbishments progressed and different spaces of the building were shutdown and rebuilt then reopened.
The Cookery, Bistro & Grill, is set in what used to be the gaming floor. The space is now unrecognisable to what it was, with floor to ceiling windows looking onto the impressive Viking Park, the décor is fresh and modern and the vibe most days of the week is buzzing. From mother’s groups to quick lunch catch ups and family dinners, The Cookery is a versatile space. The menu is built off the bistro classics like schnitzels and burgers but also features a few of the more decadent selections like the baked brie cheese served with fig jam or for the health conscious the power bowl which is loaded with delicious vegetables, grilled chicken and hummus. The Cookery is also where you will find the indoor kids play area. Located at the back of the bistro, the area houses play equipment that rivals most play areas as well as TV’s and Xbox consoles. So next time your kids have way too much energy bring them down and let them run wild and burn it all off.
So, from Erindale Vikings to our regular Sideline Bar and TAB Members we THANK YOU for your patience as we know you have probably seen and heard most of the construction. To say thanks, we have given the menu a facelift with a selection of substantial meals as well as a selection of bar snacks available all day every day, a weekend grazing menu and a new cocktail menu.
Moo + Brew Where do we start with Moo+Brew? What was once a small café that sold simple coffee and cake has now been transformed into a café featuring a fireplace with a range of seating options surrounded by an aroma of coffee beans, Italian treats and light snacks. Moo+Brew has proven to be ever so popular in the short time it has been open. Providing Members with a casual space to catch up over coffee, cake or even a toasted focaccia. We are finding most people are coming for not only the coffee but they also stay for the gelato…With 12 delicious flavours to choose from, the gelato bar means any time is a good time to visit.

Lotus Lounge You can erase all those traditional gaming floor images that are popping up in your head, the new Lotus Lounge is light, bright and modern. With 229 state of the art gaming machines and two bars, we think you’re going to love the new Lotus Lounge. Of course we are a bit biased so check out the feedback we recently received from one of our patrons.
‘Stepping into the Lotus Lounge was akin to entering a high-class casino. I was almost overwhelmed at the sheer size and scale of the place. The lighting, high ceilings and incredible colourful dragon light fitting in the middle of the hall was extremely impressive. The sounds and music played in the space made me feel exhilarated. It did not feel like an ordinary club gaming area at all.’
Brick & Basil The concept for Brick & Basil was always clear, authentic Italian dining in the heart of the Tuggeranong Valley, and we think this has been delivered. From the exposed brick and pantry style interior, to the twilight under the alfresco – every last detail was considered against the original concept. To make sure it is an experience that can be shared we have made sure the menu lends itself to social occasions with a large selection of share plates, pizza, pasta and incredible Italian desserts. The restaurant has been divided into three areas, with the ground floor featuring large custom-made tables for large bookings. Downstairs you will find smaller tables, ideal for small group catch ups. Outside not only will you dine under the twilight but you can also grab a wine, some share plates and sit around the outdoor fire pit with your family and friends. We look forward to seeing you at Brick & Basil soon. Be sure to treat yourself to the Struffoli – the most amazing Italian dessert you will ever taste!

South Canberra Tuggeranong Athletics Club Kelsey-Lee made the Australian team for the IAAF World Athletics Championships and qualified for the Australian team for the Commonwealth Games 2018 (multiple A qualifiers, team not yet announced). List of 2017 achievements: • Gold medal in the Women’s javelin, Australian Athletics Championships, Sydney • 10th, Women’s javelin, IAAF World Athletics Championships, London • 2nd, Women’s javelin, IAAF Diamond League Final, Zurich, with a personal best throw of 64.53m. The Diamond League is the elite world athletics series, is invitation only and this was the final event which Kelsey-Lee had to qualify for in previous events.

WIN News Reporter, Caitlyn Chalmers was the host for the evening which recognised the amazing achievements of 50 nominees across five major awards. Guests were treated to a special Q & A session with Caroline Buchanan who started her BMX career at the Tuggeranong Vikings BMX Club. She spoke about her goals for 2018 and gave some wonderful advice to all the female junior athletes coming up through their respective sports “Race the boys, always make it hard for yourself, keep putting yourself out there and perfecting your chosen sport’. 10 Affiliate Club Scholarships were also presented to athletes on the night, which will assist in covering the costs of their academic and sporting pursuits over the coming 12 months.

Tuggeranong Vikings Touch Club
Chris has been coaching the Women’s Touch team for the past 11 years. In that time they have become the powerhouse team of the ACT. Chris has invested time and effort into developing Tuggeranong juniors and this has seen the representative teams from the ACT with a majority of Vikings players in them. Chris has placed a real importance on the development of the junior players with the only Junior Australian representative from the ACT in 2017 coming from the Vikings Touch Club. Chris has more recently encouraged some up and coming coaches to join the Club and co-coach the Women’s team, providing them with experience and knowledge to improve as coaches themselves. Chris is the President of the Club and in three years has overseen a rebuild of the Men’s program, again focusing on the development of local juniors which is already seeing great results.
Tuggeranong Vikings Baseball Club
Sharon has been the Treasurer of Tuggeranong Vikings Baseball Club for the past four years. Sharon spent at least 20 hours a week for six months of her personal time to get past Club accounts in order. Her dedication to this task was outstanding to make sure this process was done correctly. She put herself through an MYOB course at no expense to the Club - for these reasons alone Sharon deserves to be recognised. Sharon also orders canteen stock, cleans and volunteers her time every weekend to support the teams and to make sure every fundraising opportunity was in place to make the canteen profitable. Sharon is selfless in the time she gives and nothing is too much trouble. The support and organisation Sharon gives to the Tuggeranong Vikings Baseball Club, its players and other committee members is simply priceless.

Tuggeranong Netball Association The Tuggeranong Netball Association State League Division 1 team in 2017 created history in the ACT by being the first team to win the ACT State League Division 1 championship three years in a row. This is the Premier Netball competition in the ACT and Western NSW and in the 25 years of this competition no team has achieved such an outcome. This is the same team which successfully brought the trophy to the Tuggeranong Valley for the first time in 19 years in 2015, with victory again in 2016, and the history making victory in the Grand Final of 2017, made in the last 90 seconds of the game against a previously undefeated opponent.

The Vikings venues have built a reputation for being one of the best spots in Canberra to play Two-Up on Anzac Day. Two-Up this year will only be held at Chisholm and Lanyon Vikings. It’s been a few years since Lanyon has played host to Two-Up, the ring will be located in the Lounge area. Players must be 18 years of age to play. All profits from Two-Up will be donated to Vikings Fishing Club and Vikings Rugby.

Thank you to our amazing Members who have already generously helped us donate over $20,000 for our Charity of the Year, OzHarvest.
STAFF VOLUNTEERING A DAY IN THE OZHARVEST VAN Vikings Group staff have collectively volunteered over 100 hours towards the OzHarvest Van as part of our commitment to our Charity of the Year. Each fortnight, a Vikings Group staff member joins an OzHarvest Volunteer in the van for a day to rescue food around town and deliver it to many different organisations in the ACT region. This physically demanding day-to-day operation which OzHarvest embarks on is a streamlined process using the latest technology. All staff have enjoyed their volunteering experience and have learnt a lot about the needs of the community.
CANBERRA VIKINGS CHARIT Y PARTNER As part of the Vikings Group 2017/18 Charity of the Year partnership with OzHarvest, the Canberra Vikings National Rugby Championship team also partnered with the charity for the duration of the tournament. The OzHarvest logo featured prominently on the back of the Canberra Vikings jersey, and money was raised for OzHarvest by selling their fun and tasty fortune cookies at the canteen. Dave Burnet and other members of the team enjoyed coming to games and supporting the Canberra Vikings during the season, where they unfortunately lost the Grand Final to Queensland Country at Viking Park. Thanks to OzHarvest for all their support and what they do in the Canberra community!

CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE Over December, Vikings Group Members generously donated to our Christmas Giving Tree in support of OzHarvest. Members purchased baubles from Club Receptions and wrote a special message on them to show their Christmas spirit. Members were also encouraged to bring in their non-perishable goods with over 100 items donated to OzHarvest.
Applications will open to become our next Charity of the Year on 1 April 2018 and run for the whole month! Be sure to let your favourite charities know that applications are open so they can submit theirs during the month of April. All information will be made available via our website www.vikings.com.au.

Head to the Brumbies home game on Sunday, 3 June 2018 at GIO Stadium in-support of our Charity of the Year partner, OzHarvest. OzHarvest has been selected as the Game Day Charity and the Vikings Group will be out there volunteering to help reach our fundraising target. YOGA ON THE GREENS FRIDAY, 31 JANUARY 2018 Over forty Canberrans took part in the inaugural Yoga on the Greens, hosted at Town Centre Vikings. The class was conducted by local Yoga Instructor, Shelby Trevillian from Soulution Yoga on the lush lawn bowling greens during the twilight hours of the evening with the class beginning at 7:30pm. The inaugural event was a chance for locals to engage in a nourishing activity whilst generating awareness for OzHarvest. Tickets were $20 each, with each ticket helping to deliver 40 meals to those in need in the local Canberra community.
POP UP SOUL SHOP The Pop-Up Soul Shops for OzHarvest are located at each Venue Reception and sell merchandise items such as aprons, tote bags, lunch bags and key-rings. These items are fantastic gift ideas and help promote important messages from OzHarvest, including to love your leftovers and take your lunch to work or school and forgetting about plastics and instead using re-usable bags for all your shopping needs. Be sure to ask Reception to have a look at these items the next time you are in a Vikings Group venue.
THE GOOD FOOD Help support OzHarvest through our Good Food Promotion. Head to Erindale, Town Centre or Lanyon Vikings and select the special Cake and Coffee deal on offer at Moo&Brew. $1 from every sale goes straight to OzHarvest. It’s the gift that keeps on giving and that $1 donation will help deliver 2 meals to someone in need.
Partnering with the Vikings Group, Vikings Rugby will be hosting a Charity Day in 2018 to support our Charity of the Year, OzHarvest. There will be a number of activities throughout the day to support fundraising for OzHarvest. To celebrate the occasion, 1st Grade will be wearing a commemorative strip which will be auctioned off at the after-match function, with proceeds going to OzHarvest.

KIDS IN CARE OVER CHRISTMA S Town Centre Vikings in association with the Tuggeranong Vikings Lawn Bowls Club supported the Kids in Care Over Christmas initiative which is organised by the Criminal Investigations Team based at Woden Police Station. Patrons of the Vikings Group could donate gifts for children in the ACT who were in crisis accommodation over Christmas. Two staff attended the thank you morning tea at Woden Police Station to see the work of all the organisations who donated to the cause. They were met with hundreds of presents and an overwhelming response by the community. Over 30 presents were donated by Town Centre Vikings.
GILMORE PRIMARY SCHOOL GET SUNSMART During February, Vikings Group delivered 40 bucket hats to the students at Gilmore Primary School to help them become more sun smart in these hot summer months. Gilmore Primary School got in touch and the Vikings Group lent a hand. The bucket hats were the perfect addition to their school uniform of red and white!

Community Giving back is just what we do!
S CHOOL S CHOLARSHIP S During the month of November, eight School Scholarships (valued at $500 each) were presented to students across the High Schools in the Tuggeranong Valley. The Vikings Group School Scholarship program is now in its 26th year and has provided assistance to nearly 620 young athletes in this time. The purpose of this program is to reward excellence in sport and academic achievement, by assisting these students with the cost of furthering their education. One of the Scholarship recipients, Josh Dezman has already competed at the Australian MTA Championships in Queensland during 26 – 28 January 2018 and after two hard fights won the Australian Title for under 18 years, 57kg title. Josh will be off to Thailand in August to represent Australia at the World Championships. The Vikings Group would like to congratulate Josh on this amazing achievement and wish him all the best for the year ahead.
CAROLS IN TOWN PARK S CHOOL PACK Theodore Primary School were the winners of the 7th Round of the Cast Your Vote initiative inside our Venues. They received the most votes for their fundraising event which was their end of year concert. For their winning efforts, Theodore Primary School received $300. If your school would like to be involved in the next round, please email community@vikings.com.au.

Carols in Town Park attracted a large crowd at Tuggeranong once again for the annual Carols event, hosted by the Salvation Army. This year was the 10th year that Vikings Group were the major partner. The Vikings Group had a large stall where flags were handed out and the face-painting was located. We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Santa himself which meant all the children were able to get photos and have a word to Santa before Christmas came. In addition to this, the Vikings Group enjoyed hosting the VIP area, where guests were treated to a wonderful Christmas hamper and the best seats in the house!
