FROM THE CEO... As CEO of the Vikings Group my overarching aim is to provide Members with vibrant and inviting Clubs, an aim that is shared throughout the whole organisation. All Vikings staff strive to provide Members with engaging events, true hospitality and genuine interaction. This aim gives us the opportunity to provide a range of cultural, sporting, musical and social events throughout the calendar year. This season we commemorate Anzac Day at our Clubs with the traditional game of Two-Up and a complimentary War Memorial Dawn Service bus running for Members to pay their respects. Mother’s Day and Easter will be celebrated across the four clubs, giving Members the chance to take home cash and chocolate at the Easter bonus raffles and a wide variety of affordable dining experiences to treat Mum. The Auditorium will be abuzz with first class acts including The Wiggles, The McClymonts, Justice Crew and Rodney Rude, tickets are on sale now via Ticketek. Focus groups were conducted at the end of last year to ensure all activities and changes we make serve our Members and is consistent with your needs and wants. I look forward to rolling out your feedback and suggestions across all areas of business with my fellow staff support. I encourage all Members to provide feedback via the “Contact” form at vikings.com.au to assist Vikings in becoming an even stronger part of the Valley community.

The Vikings Group have also developed an Alcohol Management Plan to maintain the highest standards of responsible alcohol service and Member welfare. In making this commitment, the Vikings Group will regularly consult with the local community and our staff regarding the safety of our Clubs. The Vikings Group intends to retain a number of existing measures that have reduced alcohol related incidents and anti-social behaviour in our venues. In particular, the Vikings Group will continue to:

This Anzac Day the Vikings Group will launch our Don’t Waste Tomorrow campaign to address and prevent issues surrounding alcohol consumption and violence. It follows an agenda of the Vikings Group to reduce alcohol-related harm and anti-social activities in our venues in conjunction with creating an enjoyable environment for all Members and the community. The objectives of the Don’t Waste Tomorrow campaign is to; •

Create a safe and enjoyable environment for all Members and their guests

Ensure that our venues are safe and inviting to all Members of the community

Reduce anti-social behaviour

Reduce alcohol related violence and disorderly conduct

Ensure staffs ongoing compliance with Responsible Service of Alcohol obligations.

Ban all drinking games that involve a level of excessive consumption of alcohol by our Members and guests on premise

Ensure all Members and their guests have access to free drinking water

Ensure venues are adequately lit to discourage drug dealing, sexual harassment and unwanted loitering

Serve alcohol in measured glasses so Members can monitor their standard drinks and consumption

Ensure public phones are accessible at Reception

Ensure no person leaves our venues with open containers of alcohol, such as a stubbies, cans or glass

Do not overcrowd—it is harder for security to observe and can affect safe and effective evacuation

Run regular staff meetings to discuss issues (e.g. how they have dealt with difficult patrons, responsible service of alcohol, etc.)

Supply club courtesy buses to ensure patrons can leave the venue safely and prevent/ discourage drink driving

Cessation of bar service half an hour before closing time (or earlier if required)

Provide reliable and professional security in order to keep the occurrence of violent incidents on premise to a minimum

Inform all contracted security staff of their legal and social responsibilities in managing patron’s safety.

The Don’t Waste Tomorrow Campaign will further promote and reduce alcohol related incidents and anti-social behaviour by the use of internal marketing mediums and signage to advise patrons of their rights and responsibilities and advertise safe drinking practices.

MICK’S ANIMAL RESCUE VIKINGS STAFF PROFILE You may have noticed maintenance man Mick Mathes standing high on a ladder or laying low fixing carpet at a Vikings Club over the years and we bet you never imagined that such a handy man could also be a wildlife rescuer.

never a dull moment at our house.” At one stage over the summer months 20 baby magpies took up accommodation with Mick and his wife making for a full and noisy house. When asked whether it was sad to say goodbye to the baby magpies and other animals that they cared for over the years, Mick simply said, “we have had so many animals over the years that the release stage is easy and actually a very rewarding stage.”

“WE WILL KEEP DOING WHAT WE ARE DOING FOR A LONG TIME, IT’S GOOD FOR THE SOUL.”

A beloved and valuable Member of staff, Mick has worked in the maintenance team at Vikings for 5 years. In his spare time however, Mick and his wife Anne protect, home and rehabilitate our native animals. As volunteers for the RSPCA Wild Life Rescue Team for the past 15 years Mick and Anne have looked after hundreds of orphaned animals in their fully set up backyard in Florey. “My wife Anne was interested in volunteering at the RSPCA, so we went to a meeting and now 15 years later we are still taking in animals and loving it,” Mick stated. Predominately caring for possums and birds, Mick and his wife take in an average of a dozen animals at a time that have found themselves in a dire situation. “In the ACT native animals and birds are injured or orphaned because of interaction with humans, vehicle strikes, housing development, predators such as cats, and some invasive species such as Indian Myna birds. As a result of all the risk factors there is

Of course taking care of wild animals has given Mick and Anne some interesting memories and stories to share. Including the times they have repaired a turtles shell by putting the pieces back together like a jigsaw. Or the pet bird they have now adopted who had a severe nicotine addiction and not a single feather thanks to a previous owner!

A purely volunteer role with the RSPCA, the couple have committed both time and money setting up their place to cater to the animals. “You have to have all the gear, proper cages, the right food and equipment – but we are happy to do it.” And they will continue to do it for many years to come “we will keep doing what we are doing for a long time, it’s good for the soul.” For more information about the volunteer positions at the RSCPA visit: rspca.org.au “Volunteering just might change your life - it’s changed ours. VIKINGS GROUP SPREAD THE CHRISTMAS CHEER AT CAROLS IN TOWN PARK

On Sunday, 20 December 2015 in hot and humid conditions, the annual Carols in Town Park event was hosted by the Salvation Army with a huge crowd turning out to don Santa hats and sing Carols in time for Christmas. The event was hosted by ACT Young Australian of the Year, Nip Wijewickrema. There were many special guests on the night including Amber Nichols (from “The Voice”), Katie de Veau, Dallas Atkins, The Salvation Army’s National Capital Band, the Tuggeranong Salvation Army Timbrels and Canberra Community Voices. Of course there were plenty of activities for the kids including jumping castles, pony rides and the animal farm. The Vikings Group handed out helium balloons and goodies to all the children and one of the major highlights of the event was watching Santa arrive and meet all the kids. The Vikings Group are proud to be associated with such a wonderful community event and it is a great pleasure to be involved and spread the Christmas spirit with the Tuggeranong Valley and surrounding region.

RESOLUTION RUN SERIES #1 EVENT On Sunday, 17 January 2016 close to 200 keen runners and walkers participated in the first Resolution Run Series around Lake Tuggeranong in what would have been considered perfect conditions. The organisers of the event were please with the number of registrations and are already excited for the second instalment of the Resolution Run Series on Sunday, 20 March 2016. Here are four (4) Vikings Group staff Members who braved the 7KM track. Well done to the Resolution Run Series Event Organisers and to all participants. For more information regarding the #2 Event. Visit their website resolutionrunseries.com.au and join up today! The events range from a 700m kids dash, 7km walk, 3km run, 7km run and a 14km run. In the #2, #3 and #4 events later in the year they will be introducing a half marathon and a full marathon to the schedule. All the races are designed to be run as individual events or as a series. Whether you are new to running, a seasoned pro or an avid walker there is an event to suit (including the kids too!)

32 set about raising a mountain of cash for Lifeline’s 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention services. The event at Erindale Vikings raised $3,450, which takes the total raised from the 6 NIL initiative to over $150,000, since its beginning in February 2014. Guests dug deep to purchase raffle tickets on the night and others rushed to get signed copies of Kurt’s book ‘Beyond the Limits’ with half the proceeds going to 6NIL. The Vikings Group assisted by providing the venue for the fundraiser.

CANBERRA VIKINGS CREW FINISHES A STRONG SECOND IN TOUGH RACE CONDITIONS The 19th edition of the George Bass Surfboat Marathon held in January 2016 was one of the most challenging events in the races history with torrential rain and challenging surf conditions severely effecting the first 5 days of the 7 day race resulting in days 2 through 5 of the 7 day event being rowed on alternate courses due to the challenging ocean conditions. Days 1, 6 & 7 were the only days that the races traditional course were able to be completed.

CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN On Saturday, 21 November 2015, 60 guests relished in the opportunity to hear about feats of courage and determination recounted by Kurt Fearnley, Paralympian and passionate mental health advocate. Kurt shared his experiences of crawling the Kokoda track as well as stories from amazing athletic career. Kurt shared the stage with Will and Maddie Gay, an inspirational brother and sister pairing who dreamed up their mighty 6NIL challenge which was to climb six mountains in five countries on four continents in three months with one goal - to prevent suicide. The pair said they wanted to do something ‘huge’ for suicide prevention following the death of their father Tony in 2009. In just three months the duo climbed Mount Kinabalu (Malaysia), Machu Picchu (Peru), Mount Meru (Tanzania), Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania), Mount Cook (New Zealand) and Mount Kosciusko (Australia). Kurt, who lost a cousin to suicide, said he was honoured to get behind the 6NIL campaign. Curtin’s Nerida Volker, believes Will and Maddie have set a wonderful example for her own children whose lives have been touched by suicide. She decided to take action and help breakdown the stigma around this issue, demonstrating the importance of a wholeof-community approach to suicide prevention by staging the fundraiser at the Erindale Vikings Club dinner with the help of friend Annette Byron. Not content to raise awareness for suicide prevention by climbing mountains, the young adventurers also

The Canberra Vikings crew battled with defending race champions Bulli and the Coogee crew all week with the three crews trading places on a daily basis with the crew from Bulli ultimately running out victors by a solitary point from the Vikings in 2nd place and Coogee who finished in 3rd. It was the closest race result in the marathons history (three crews within a solitary point of each other) and the first event since 2008 where the lead swapped throughout the week with the last three editions of this bi-annual event being dominated by one crew (Vikings in 2010 & 2012 and Bulli in 2014). The Vikings crew managed stage wins on day 3 and on the last leg on day 7 where it needed to win and have Bulli finish in 4th place or worse to claim the overall victory. Whilst the Vikings managed the win, Bulli finished in 3rd place on the last day resulting in the one point overall victory to Bulli. Whilst ultimately disappointed to have missed the overall win, the crew was proud of its achievements during the week and are already planning their assault on the 2018 race where it will aim to go one better! Our thanks and appreciation as always to the Vikings Group for their ongoing support. Camp Viking, ably lead by Geoff Adam and Dave Paull continues to be the envy of all other competitors in the event and the week would not be possible without the support of the Vikings or our camp support crew.

ACT WALKERS BLITZ THE TRACK From 4 – 6 December 2015, the Australian All Schools Championships were held at the Lakeside Stadium (Albert Park, Victoria). ACT sent its biggest team yet, comprising of approximately 120 kids. This amazing team was made up of various track and field athletes ranging from Under 16’s through to Under 18’s. A team of six ACT walkers, coached by Val Chesterton were involved in this group. In the 300m Boys Race, the ACT placed 1st – Connor Frew, 2nd – Mitchell Baker and 5th – Callum Burns. All of the walkers either got a medal or a personal best time. In the 3000m Girls Race, the ACT placed 2nd. The ACT walker’s team received 11 medals in total over the weekend with three children receiving gold medals. Connor Frew, a Member of the Calwell Little Athletics Club has been race walking since 2010. He left the sport for two years when a Club walking judge told him to change his technique after disqualifying him after breaking the record three times. For the last two years, Connor has been training with his coach Val and in August 2015, Connor came equal 1st in the Australian Road Walking Championships, but was awarded a Bronze medal (due to no electronic timing being used) and in December 2015, Connor was able to prove that he is a champion with his first official Australian Gold Medal. Well done to Connor, his coach Val and the Calwell Littles Athletics Club. Keep up the great work!

The installation of a solar power panel system is underway at Lanyon Vikings. The system will provide renewable energy to the club and reduce our carbon footprint. The Vikings Group in its corporate principles and processes aim to maintain and improve the environment through careful use of resources, avoidance of waste and responsible conduct in all environmental issues. The investment in solar energy is an example of our commitment to this.

support this initiative. In conjunction we have a large flat roof making us an ideal candidate for solar power,” Hill added. Having solar power will result in reduced consumption of fuels, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. By using this alternative source, Vikings further expresses our participation in the battle against global warming and our society’s dependence on fossil fuels.

“WE WANTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE & FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT”

“We wanted to go solar because we wanted to make a difference and feel good about it”, said CEO Anthony Hill. “A club uses a lot of power, but we don’t want to deplete our resources, we want to reduce our carbon footprint.”

HOW DOES SOLAR POWER ACTUALLY WORK? Solar is a renewable energy resource that uses photovoltaic (PV) systems to create electricity. A solar PV system uses light to generate electricity, which can then power our Club.

The solar panel program will initially be rolled out at Lanyon Vikings with future plans to go solar across all four Vikings Group venues. Through the program Members in the Lanyon Vikings club will now for the first time be able to view real time energy harvesting data via an internal monitor which is highly interactive and user friendly.
