Bittersweet End to the Season as Vikings Wrapping Up the Track By Brianna Schultz It’s hard to believe it’s only November, and already the regular cross-country running season has come to an end. The team ran their last race on October 26 at Goldbar Park in Edmonton under perfect weather conditions. The women set their sights high hoping to finish in 5th place or better as a team in order to advance to nationals. Despite great effort and lots of personal bests for individuals, the women fell short and ended up in 7th place overall. Vanessa Trofimenkoff of MacEwan University was the first place finisher with a time of 19:14 for 5km. Keely MacCulloch was Augustana’s fastest racer with a time of 21:39, finishing 17th out of a total of 84 runners. On the men’s side, Augustana found greater success and was able to clinch a spot at Nationals in Etobicoke, Ontario on November 9th. The winning time was 26:23 for 8km by Edwin Kaitany of Lethbridge College. Ryan Burlingame of Augustana had a great race, finishing 6th overall out of 66 competitors and earned a spot representing not only Augustana, but also Team Alberta at Nationals. On behalf of the running team, thank you to everyone who came out to support us and cheer at any of our ACAC races. Also, thank you to the volunteers who helped with course set up and timing. Finally, a huge thank you to Gerhard and Robert for timing, calculating splits, taking pictures, cheering, encouraging and being great coaches!! Looking forward, the team will disperse in several directions. Some members will continue practicing as they look toward Nationals. For others, it is now time to shift gears and focus more on ski training as racing season will begin in November. In January, there will be a slightly more recreational indoor season with practices held at the track in the Encana Arena. Until then, we will be cheering for the men’s team at Nationals. Go Vikings!

Roller Coaster Season Continues for Men’s Hockey By Harrison Tribble

This weekend the men’s hockey team squared off with the Grant MacEwan Griffins in search of a little consistency. Coming into the weekend the Vikings had won two games in a row and collected points in six straight games. On Friday night in Edmonton, things got off to a rocky start with the MacEwan Griffins jumping out to an early lead when a back checking miscommunication left a Griffin wide open in the slot. The Vikings fought hard, but were unable to mount a comeback and fell 4-1. Perhaps the lone bright spot from Friday night was the return of Dane Bonish to the Vikings line up. Dane scored the Vikings only goal after missing the first 8 games of the season with what the team trainer Kyle Davis is calling an “upper body injury”. Saturday night was breast cancer awareness night at the Encana Arena as the Vikings looked to get some payback for Friday night’s loss. The Vikings’ senior member, Darryl Gagnon did an excellent job of promoting the “pink the rink” effort and collecting donations. You can follow Darryl on twitter @dgagnon24. A good crowd was on hand and they got quite a show as the Vikings and Griffins traded goals like it was going out of style. The Griffins led in scoring for the majority of the game, quickly matching the Vikings every time they scored. Going into the third period, the Griffins led 4-3 but the Vikings came out swinging and were able to score four goals before the final buzzer sounded. Scott Aucoin iced the win when he scored into an empty MacEwan net to make it 7 -5 with less than a minute of play remaining. Dane “Bone saw” Bonish had another standout performance, chizzling out a hat-trick and adding two assists. You can follow the blossoming superstar on Twitter @BonishD. Following the game, hundreds of bras rained down onto the ice as the first ever Augustana Vikings Bra Toss commenced. The bras donated are destined for the Bra Recyclers a charity that re-appropriates bras to areas where women are in need. Bra Necessities matched each bra donation with a donation of 1$ to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The boys would like to sincerely thank everyone who participated! Next home action for the Vikings Hockey team is Wednesday night when the NAIT Ooks come to town.

Women’s Volleyball takes on the Olds College Broncos By Jenn Laskosky On Friday October 25th the Viking’s Women’s Volleyball team played their first home game against Olds College. The team was full of enthusiasm and determination, but came up just short of a win. They made a significant comeback in the first set after giving up a seven point lead, but fell short losing 25-22. The team continued to push back, but lost the following two sets 25-17 and 25-12. Player of the game was awarded to Keri Alcorn with 9 kills and 10 digs. The team showed that their months of training have indeed paid off, but that they still have some learning to do. They will continue to train hard as they are looking for a win against the Concordia Thunder next weekend. Don’t forget to come out and support the volleyball teams as they take on Concordia Thunder this Friday November, 1st. Go Vikings!

Solid Debut for Men’s Volleyball Home Opener By Thomas Regier This past weekend, the men’s volleyball team took on the Olds Broncos in their season home-opener. There was a packed crowd and the gym was full with excitement. Our trainers, Joe and Mike, were particularly excited as this was their first game as Vikings trainers. The game started off with a bang; the Vikings took a quick lead and managed to win the first set by a score of 25-8. In the second set they came out a little bit flat, giving up an early lead. However, the tenacious strength and power of the Vikings, both at the net and on defense, couldn’t be matched by the Broncos. The Vikings ended up winning the second set 25-18. The third set was much like the first. The Vikings came out with a strong start, creating a large lead that they maintained for the entire set, winning 25-10. Cole McCartney, who is returning to Augustana for his third year from the U of A Golden Bears, received the Player of The Game with 7 kills, 2 service aces, 1 block, and 1 dig. Newcomer and Red Deer College transfer, Jordan Gardiner, also had a very strong night at the net racking up 7 blocks. Nazheef Gangji led the way in the kill department with 12 overall. After a strong first match, the Vikings Men’s Volleyball Team is looking forward to taking on the Concordia Thunder this coming Thursday and Friday. The next home game for the Vikings Volleyball teams will be on Friday November 1st. Women start at 6pm with the men’s match to follow. Come on out and support your Vikings!

Breast Cancer Awareness at Augustana By Katy Hotchkiss Throughout this month the Augustana Athletics Department, led by a dedicated group of student athletes, has been fundraising and promoting Breast Cancer Awareness in conjunction with the Augustana Students Association (ASA) and Bra Necessities. The importance of Breast Cancer Awareness cannot be overstated. How many of us know someone who has been directly or indirectly affected by Breast Cancer, and how many of us could possibly develop Breast Cancer? The message of early detection and the continuation of Breast Cancer research is critical. For that reason the Athletics Department has teamed up with the ASA and Bra Necessities to promote awareness and generate funds for Breast Cancer research. Women’s Volleyball began the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign at Augustana with a bang, raising 679$ for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) at a Bake Sale on October 21st in the Augustana Forum. The Bake Sale was followed up by an event organized and implemented by the ASA, Pink Day. On Pink Day, or October 23rd the ASA encouraged Augustana students, staff and the larger community to wear pink to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness. The campaign continued at the Volleyball Home-Opener against the Olds College Broncos on October 25th. Kim Turre and Bra Necessities staff were present to sell pink t-shirts and accept both monetary and bra donations at the game. Both Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams sported pink tape and laces, along with the majority of the crowd which was sporting pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. On October 26th the Vikings Hockey team took on the Grant MacEwan Griffins at the Encana Arena in Camrose. Kim Turre and her team from Bra Necessities were once again present to accept bra donations and sell bras for the first ever Augustana Vikings Bra Toss. At the final whistle spectators were encouraged to toss their bra donations on to the ice. Hundreds of bras rained down from the stands onto the ice where

Bras Raised = 666 Funds Raised To Date = $2046 they were collected and stowed away for Bras Around the Lake, October 28th. That weekend over 600$ was raised. The campaign continued the following week at Mirror Lake in Camrose where Bra Necessities and a group of student athlete volunteers strung bras half way around the lake in the first ever, Bras Around the Lake. Bra Necessities committed to donating 1$ for every bra donated up until October 26th and the final count came in at 666 bras donated. The bras will be donated to the Bra Recyclers, a charity that re-appropriates the bras to areas in need. The 666$ donated by Bra Necessities will be donated, along with the rest of the funds raised, to the CBCF. Come on out to the Augustana Gym November 2nd, the Grand Finale of Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Augustana. As both our Women’s and Men’s teams take on the Concordia Thunder at 6:00pm/8:00pm. A silent auction will begin at 5:30 and end at the half-way point of the Men’s game. The Bra Necessities Draw, which was open to all who donated bras or money, will be drawn, and the Camrose Spirals will be performing twice during the evening. Don’t forget to wear pink! Curling takes to the Ice to Train By Wyatt Warawa Now that the curling rink ice has been installed, you will no longer be seeing the curling teams breaking a sweat in the quad doing dryland training. However, the hard work for the curling team is just beginning. This year, the Vikings have taken responsibility for the Little Rockers program that teaches curling skills to elementary kids in the Camrose area. In preparation for this undertaking, several of our athletes completed an instructional club coach course and received training and certification that will ensure that the Little Rockers program is both enjoyable and educational for all of the participants. In addition, the Vikings will be hosting its first curling All Star Camp for high school students November 9th which will include on-ice clinics, slide technique analysis and games. Don’t forget to come out to the Rose City Curling Club on November 2nd to watch Augustana host Lakeland in it first annual Continental Cup style bonspiel in preparation for hosting the ACAC fall regionals November 22-24. Games will also be aired live on Community Ten if you can’t make it out in person.

A Split Weekend for Men’s Basketball By Anton Paszek Last week on Thursday and Saturday the Augustana Men’s Basketball team faced off against Olds College and SAIT in their season opening games. The Vikings piled into the bus for a much shorter bus trip down to Olds and Calgary, compared to their previous 13 hour bus trip down to Idaho. Olds College’s new recreational facilities proved to be very spacious and accommodating as the Vikings prepared for their first game of the season. The game began with a strong offensive effort by Augustana, hitting shots from the field and behind the arc, and capitalizing down low in the post with some gritty buckets. By the end of the quarter the Vikings had scored 28 points, unfortunately at the cost of defense, allowing Olds a score of 22. By the half, Augustana extended their lead by only 1 point, with a score of 44-37. Olds guard, #10 Cody Bouchard proved to be the Vikings biggest threat, scoring 21 points in the first half, more than half of Olds total points. The Vikings knew their best shot at success would be to shut him down early in the second half. The third proved to be another difficult quarter, with both teams scoring 19 points, leaving the Vikes still up by 7, with a score of 63-56. With the game winding down, the Vikings found themselves in a favorable spot, leaving the Broncos to scramble in an attempt to reclaim the lead. The Vikings successfully plundered the Broncos in their home gym with a final score of 86-80. #15 Lee Danderfer was named Augustana’s MVP with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists. Two days later, the Vikings found themselves in a similar situation in SAIT Polytechnic’s home gym. Coming off a solid win and motivating game on Thursday, the Vikings were revving for a weekend sweep and a tied spot for first place in the conference. The Vikings built off of their defensive play against Olds on Thursday, and were determined to have a more focused defensive effort, which is exactly what they did. The first quarter began with the Trojans up early by 4, but Augustana quickly changed pace and finished the quarter 13-12, a much lower first quarter score than what they were used to. The second quarter commenced with a similar defensive effort, with the Vikings posts relentlessly boxing out and bumping the Trojan posts down low, not allowing them any easy baskets. By the end of the first half, the Vikings were up by 3 with a score of 26-23. As the second half got underway, the Vikings were mindful of their turnovers in the first half and looked to have another successful defensive half, while cutting down on turnovers. All in all, by the end of the third, the Vikings were still leading with a score of 41-36, but had at one point been leading by 10 points, and were not satisfied with only a 5 point lead. However, the fourth quarter proved to be the most difficult for the Vikings, as it often is, with the Trojans introducing a high court trap and getting some needed turnovers and steals from the Vikings. On top of the Trojans revamped defense, the Vikings shooting groove was simply lost out to sea as the Trojans took the lead late in the fourth quarter. Some big defensive plays for Augustana seemed to change the outlook of the game, but unfortunately they suffered too severely from their turnovers and missed shots and were defeated, yet not disheartened. The final score was 57-52 for the Trojans, but the Vikings emerged with confidence in their defense and high expectations for their home opening game on November 2nd against the Concordia Thunder. Taylor Foreman was the Vikings MVP with a game high of 19 points.

A Successful Weekend for Women’s Basketball By Jordan Tomiyama This past weekend it was all about redemption for the Women’s Basketball team against the Olds College Broncos. It reignited the rivalry of last year’s ACAC championship final in which Olds won a closely contested battle. Leanne and the Vikings let out some frustration and animosity, beating Olds on their home court. Led by Kelsey Lund, who dropped 35 points and grabbed 18 boards, the Vikings dominated from start to finish. They used their height advantage and high-pressure defense to wear Olds down. The score at the end of the 1st quarter was 27-12 in favor of the Vikings and they never looked back. Sydney Purdy and Taryn Story chipped in twelve and ten point’s respectability. The Vikings also set a new record with total team rebounds with 72. The Vikings achieved their goal of redemption with a final score was 77-48. Kelsey Lund was named player of the game. The second game was against the always-strong SAIT Trojans. It was a tightly contested game in which Augustana won 67-59. The game was back and forth and lead changes occurred frequently throughout the game. No lead was safe as the Trojans demonstrated in the last minute of the third quarter. They scored three, three pointers in just under a minute to bring the lead from 10 to 1. The fourth quarter was intense and a battle to the very end. The Vikings leaned on their veteran players and they delivered. Kari Kubinec and Kelsey Lund helped guide them to the finish by grabbing key rebounds and scoring clutch free throws. Player of the game went to Kari Kubinec who dropped 20 points and scored crucial free throws for the Vikings. The Vikings moved up to the top of the standings through two big wins this past weekend. Next up for the Vikings is their Home-Opener in which they play the Concordia Thunder.

A Mixed Weekend for the Vikings By Josh Ryan The Men’s Hockey Team had another up and down weekend against The Grant MacEwan Griffins. The Griffins are looking to build momentum for their first season in the CIS next year and came out hungry in the first game on Friday night. The Vikings were unable to match the Griffins intensity and fell 4-1. Dane Bonish had the Vikings lone goal. Saturday night saw the Vikings head back to home ice at the EnCana Arena and while it wasn’t perfect, they managed to pull out the win 7-5. Dane Bonish finished off a spectacular weekend with 3 goals and 2 assists while Scott Aucoin, Dylan Coupal and Matthew Foster all had multi-point games. The Vikings have a short turnaround as they take on the N.A.I.T. Ooks Wednesday night at the EnCana arena. Puck drop is 7:30 PM. Our men’s and women’s Basketball teams began their season on the road, stopping in Olds for the season opener and then heading to Calgary two days later to take on the S.A.I.T. Trojans. The ladies won the opener against Olds handily, taking the Broncos down 77-48. Third year star Kelsey Lund dominated in points, leading all players with 35 points and 18 rebounds. The following night proved to be a little tougher with the Trojans trailing by 1 point going into the final quarter, but the Vikings proved up to the task, pulling away for the 67-59 win. The men had a tougher weekend than the women did. In the season opener in Olds, they fought off a feisty Broncos squad to win 86-80. Lee Danderfer led the Vikings offensively with 20 points. They would be less fortunate however against the S.A.I.T. Trojans as they fell 57-52. Stats for Saturday’s games were unavailable at the time of publishing. “We are finally in conference play and off to a good start,” says head coach Dave Drabiuk, “The split in the first weekend isn’t what we wanted, but it could have been worse.” Both teams are in town Saturday night for the second game of a home and away series with the Concordia Thunder. Women start at 6:00 PM while the men start at 8:00 PM. Collegiate volleyball is back as the Vikings hosted the Olds Broncos for their season opener. The women were up first and started strong, but eventually fell to the consistent pressure of the Broncos serving and blocking three sets to none. Set scores were 23-25, 17-25, 12-25. Keri Alcorn was named player of the match, posting 9 kills and 10 digs. The men’s match was a different story with the Vikings working the young Broncos squad from start to finish to win 3-0. Set scores were 25-8, 25-18, 25-10. Fifth year Nazheef Gangji had a match high 12 kills while Co-captain Cole McCartney was named player of the match with 7 kills and 2 service aces. “It’s a good start to the season, but the journey has just begun,” said assistant coach Stephen Leggitt. Both teams are back in action this coming Thursday night in Edmonton where they will take on the Concordia Thunder. The following night they will return to the Augustana gymnasium for match 2. The women’s match will begin at 6:00 PM while the men will start at the conclusion of the women’s match. Great Mix of Young & Old for Augustana Curling:

vikings.ualberta.ca

Like many of the athletic programs at Augustana, curling has gone through a lot of growth the past few years and is now poised to take another step towards becoming an annual contender in the ACAC. This year promises to be a memorable one, with several new events on the horizon targeted at providing young curlers with a great experience. One of those new additions will be the All-Star Curling Camp, which will take place November 9th. Schools across Alberta that have curling will send athletes between grades 10-12 to Camrose for a one day event where they will receive instruction and game play from Augustana’s curling team. “This is a fantastic opportunity for both the athletes and our program,” says 2nd year head coach Roger Galenza. “It’s a great way for us to fund raise and recruit young athletes while giving those athletes exposure to the next level of curling in Alberta.” There are going to be many young athletes with the current edition of the curling program, particularly with the mixed team, but there are still several key veterans coming back to suit up for the Vikings including last year’s curling Rookie of the Year Brad Schroeder, (who will transition to the men’s team after leading the mixed team last season) and the reigning ACAC Male Curler of the Year Andrew Evans; back for his last year. Galenza hopes that Evans return will have positive effect on the younger athletes, particularly Schroder. “Andrew has had a great career in the ACAC with two mixed team gold medals and a silver last year with the men,” says Galenza, “and with him and Brad competing together on the same team this should move along Brad’s development for the future getting to see Andrew train and compete and converse with him along the way.” That team-up on the men’s squad looks to make the team very competitive once again this year along with the women’s team. The mixed team will field more inexperience than past years, but Galenza does not see it as a negative. “Winning three straight championships is no easy feat and eventually you have to insert new blood into the lineup,” he says, “in essence, sometimes you need to take one step back to take two steps forward. It will be a different year for our mixed team, but still a very good one.” The team is now into the swing of training, as they have two noteworthy competitions taking place at the Rose City Curling Centre this semester. The first takes place this weekend as they take on Lakeland College in a Challenge Cup format with regular games, skills games and finish with a skins competition. “This will be both a fun time for the curlers but also a chance to train against a league rival,” said Galenza. The program will also host the first ACAC league competition, the 2012/2014 Fall Classic, November 22nd-24th. All in all, now in his second year coaching, Roger Galenza is excited about where the program is headed. “The first year was a good learning experience,” says Galenza, “I am really enjoying working with these young people and look forward to the rest of the season.”
