Women’s Volleyball Team Continues their Winning Streak By Jenn Laskosky This weekend the Viking Women’s Volleyball team continued on their winning streak as they traveled to Keyano to take on the Huskies, playing even more exhilarating matches. On Friday November 8, the ladies came out strong taking the first set 25-17. The Huskies came out swinging the next set, beating the Viking’s with a close score 23-25. With fire in their hearts and the desire to win, the Viking’s fought their way back and took the third set 25-23. However, Keyano fought back once again and the Viking’s lost 16-25, forcing the game to go into a fifth set. The team bared down and fought their way to a victory winning 15-11. Player of the game went to Stefanie Zahara. The ladies showed that they are indeed a new team and their drive to win and never give up, is stronger than ever. On Saturday November 9, the team once again asserted that they were there to win, easily taking the first set 25-12. However, the team couldn’t come together and lost the second set 20-25. The ladies determination to take back their momentum showed prominently in the third set, as they fought their way back to win 25-23. The fourth set was a hard fought match between the two teams, with the scores constantly going back and forth. However, the Viking’s battled their way through winning 30-28. Player of the game went to Laura Kvemshagen. The team is now 4-1 as they prepare to take on the Lethbridge Kodiaks this coming weekend at home. It is already evident that this is a changed team and they will continue to improve as they push to make their way into the playoffs this season.

Men’s Volleyball Splits Their Weekend By Thomas Regier

The Vikings men’s volleyball team took a trip up to Fort McMurray this past weekend to take on the Keyano College Huskies. Friday night started off pretty well considering the long bus trip there. The Vikings managed to take the first two sets by a score of 25-20. The second set was a little tighter but the Vikings were still able to pull out the third set win 25-22, taking the match by a score of 3 sets to none. Cole McCartney was named the player of the game with 10 kills and 5 stuff blocks. Saturday’s game started out just like Friday’s match with the Vikings taking the first set 25-21. After the first set it was almost as if a switch turned off. The Vikings then began to struggle. They dug themselves a hole that they couldn’t get out of, losing the second set 25-15. The third and fourth sets followed a similar trend, with the Keyano Huskies firing at all cylinders and the Vikings were unable to get anything going. The Huskies took the third set 25-18 and the fourth set 2519. The player of the game was awarded to Nazheef Gangji who tallied 10 kills, 6 digs, and 2 stuff blocks. This weekend was a bit of a disappointment for the Vikings as they knew they could go in and come out with two wins. Regardless of the outcome, coach Greg Ryan reiterated at Monday’s practice that there is no need to hit the panic button. The team is still in the driver’s seat, sitting at 4-1, which is good for second place in the conference. This coming weekend the Vikings were scheduled to play the Lethbridge College Kodiaks at Augustana. Those games have since been cancelled due to events that were outside of Augustana’s control (see acac.ab.ca for more details). The women’s games will still be going on, so come on out and support the Vikings women’s volleyball team as they take on Lethbridge! Games start at 6:00pm on Friday and 1:00pm. See you there?

Men’s Basketball Results November 8th Vikings Beat the Kings 79-65

November 9th Vikings lose to Kings 60-71

Women’s Basketball Defeats Concordia By Jordan Tomiyama Entering Friday’s contest against the Kings, The Vikings were undefeated and looking to continue their winning ways. They did exactly that by beating Kings University 64-35. Defense was an obvious focus for the Vikings as they came out with tons of energy and effort on that end of the court. They held King’s to 11 points in the first half, as they held a 45-11 lead going into halftime. Balanced scoring was key for the Vikes as ten out of the 11 girls registered a point on the score sheet. The shutdown defense of the Vikings did not allow for one member of Kings to score in double digits. Their non-step pressure and great defense forced the Lady Eagles in to shooting 18% from the field. Rebounding also propelled the team in white to victory as they out-boarded their opponents 63-38. Rookie center Talia Dale had a breakout game as she had 10 big boards as well as 5 points. Kelsey Lund led all scorers with 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Player of the Game went to Taryn Story as she almost had a double- double with 11 points and 9 rebounds. The second night was a bit of a different game. It was a closer tilt as the Vikings beat the Eagles 80-67. The Eagles came out stronger in front of their home crowd, scoring more in the 1st quarter (16) than they did in the first half the previous night (11). It was a back and fourth affair as the Vikings were up 38-28 at half. Kings was playing a 2 man game as Chelsea Dyck scored 20 points and Samantha Tennant dropped 19. The Vikes went to the hot hand in Taryn Story who was scoring at will. She led all scorers in the game with 27 points. Clutch threes and timely drives by Story allowed for the Vikings to maintain their lead throughout the game. One pretty amazing stat from the game was that, the Vikings actually got out-rebounded 43-42 in the rebounding battle. For the second straight night Taryn Story won player of the game. She not only scored but also added 7 rebounds and 3 assists to go along with her 27 points. A big home and home is in store for Leanne Shenton and her players as they face the Nait Ooks. Both teams are undefeated and will be in for an early season battle for 1st place in the Conference. It will be a big test for the Vikings as it will be a battle from the opening tip to the final buzzer.
