Women’s Volleyball Fights Hard against SAIT By Jenn Laskosky It was the first weekend back for the Viking Women’s Volleyball team since the Christmas break. On Friday January 10th the team travelled to Calgary to take on the SAIT Trojans. The ladies came out swinging the first set to defeat the Trojans 25-20. However, the team seemed to have a momentary mental lapse, losing the second set 13-25. The Viking’s fought their way back in the third and fourth set, but came up short of a victory, losing 21-25 and 14-25. Player of the game went to Kiera Lotoski. On Saturday January 11th the Viking’s once again took on the SAIT Trojans, this time on the Viking home court. Once again the team came out with fire in their hearts, taking the first set 25-21. In the second set the team ran into a few serving and mental errors, losing 18-25. In what could only be described as an excitement filled third set, the Viking’s fought their way to win the set 30-28. However, the team fell just short in the third set, losing to the Trojans 17-25. The game went into the fifth set and, despite the ladies desire for a win, the Trojans took the game winning the fifth set 15-7. Player of the game was awarded to Jill Metrunec. The Women’s team would like to thank all the fans that came out to support them this weekend.

Cross Country Running with a Strong Finish By Brianna Schultz The Vikings men’s cross country running team experienced great personal and team success at CCAA National Championships in Humber, Ontario. The course was relatively flat but it was unique as it involved two, seven hundred meter loops to begin the race before the main 7.3 km section. Because of the flat layout, most runners went out at a blistering pace that hurt them later in the race. However, our runners had trained to maintain a steady pace through the race and ignore what the other competitors chose to do. This was a great contributing factor in the success of Augustana’s runners. Ryan Burlingame came in first for Augustana in a time of 28:19 finishing 31 overall. He was followed by Hans Asfeldt at a time of 28:35 and 40th Andrew Jacobs at 30:32 in 85th There were a total of 116 competitors. Each of Augustana’s runners accomplished a personal best for an 8km race; a great achievement! Since Nationals, the men have joined the rest of the cross country running team in making the shift to ski season. Though it was slow in coming, the snow has now accumulated enough to produce race-quality trails for the team to practice on, and the volunteer groomers continue to do an outstanding job. A few members of the team participated in the First Flakes Loppet in Edmonton on November 23rd been practicing hard for their first race at home in Camrose on December 14. The Monkey Race will take place in conjunction with an Alberta Winter Games qualifier and will feature race distances between 0.3km-10km. The race begins as a mass start at 1:00pm at the Stoney Creek Centre.

Cross Country Ski Team is Back at it By Brianna Schultz The XC ski team is back at school and back to work for another semester. Though we were able to keep up consistent practice and training over the break, we are glad to be able to train together again and are looking forward to really getting started with the season. This week Canmore hosted Olympic trials, which of course brought the best skiers in the world. World Junior, NorAm, and U23 trials were also included as part of the Olympic trial races. Augustana’s most experienced racers, Hans Asfeldt and Cameron Raynor, were able to participate and raced in the 15 km classic race among the best skiers in Canada, including some who will be going to the Olympics this year. Hans finished 35th in a time of 52:26 and Cameron finished 46th in 57:00. The team will travel to Athabasca for a skate technique loppet on January 18th with distances of either 10km or 20km. The following weekend the team will travel to Red Deer and compete in several races as part of the Alberta Cup circuit. For most of the skiers, this will be the first weekend of big races so far this season so we look forward to it!
