Men’s Volleyball Takes both Matches from GPRC By Thomas Regier The Vikings made the long journey up to Grande Prairie this past weekend to take on the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves. Friday night’s opening set started off quickly with the Vikings opening up a big lead, early. They gave a little bit back towards the end of the first set but were still able to win 25-18. The second set was a different story with the Vikings finding themselves down late in the set. But they managed to force a comeback, taking the set 29-27. The third set was similar to the second, very tight for most of the set and the Vikings found themselves behind again. Unfortunately this time the comeback fell short as the Vikings dropped the third set 26-24. After being dissatisfied with dropping a set, the Vikings came out in the fourth set with a renewed sense of vigor and managed to claim the fourth and final set by a convincing score of 25-16. Jordan Gardiner received player of the game with 5 kills, 2 digs, and 2 block assists. Saturday afternoon found the Vikings victorious once again. This time winning by a set score of 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-22). The set scores were quite tight but most of sets, once again, found the Vikings trailing late. Calmness, composure, discipline and execution allowed Vikings to come back from behind in these sets to take the match. Luke Ryan was awarded player of the game with 12 kills, 2 digs, and 2 block assists. Overall it was a very good week for the Vikings. Practices have changed and a different mentality was put on display this past weekend up in Grande Prairie. The Vikings look to keep the ball rolling into this week of practice looking forward to this upcoming weekend when the men’s and women’s Vikings volleyball teams will face the Briercrest Clippers in two home matches: Friday – Women at 6:00pm, guys to follow and Saturday – Women at 1:00, guys to follow. Come on out and support your Vikings! These are very big matches for both teams with major playoff implications. You won’t want to miss it!

Women’s Volleyball Faces defeat against GPRC By Jenn Laskosky This weekend the Viking Women’s Volleyball team traveled to Grande Prairie to play the GPRC Wolves. The team got off to a rocky start The team got off to a rocky start on Friday January 24, losing the first set 11-25. The ladies fought back hard in the second set, beating the Wolves 25-22. However, the team lost a bit of momentum in the following two sets, losing 14-25 and 18-25. Player of the game was awarded to setter, and co-captain, Stefanie Zahara. On Saturday January 25th, the Viking’s once again took on the Wolves and came out a bit flat footed. The team lost the first set 14-25. In the second set, the team’s momentum seemed to pick up a bit, but the ladies could not get into the swing of the game. The Viking’s lost the second set 14-25. In the third set, the team seemed to get parts of their game finally working together. However, they were unable to take the lead and lost 19-25. Player of the game was awarded to power, Keri Alcorn. Come out to Augustana on January 31st and February 1st, to watch the Viking’s take on Briercrest.

Alumni Weekend is a Success By Joel Danyluk Viking’s hockey rebounded with a pair of dominating wins against the Keyano Huskies. I would like to start off with a thank-you to all the coaches, players, students, staff, fans, and alumni who made the alumni weekend a success. Boston Pizza was the place to be on Saturday night after the wins for a fundraiser for the team. The live band played a great mixture of old and new and had everyone dancing the night away. In total close to $13500 was raised through ticket sales, and auction items. Coach Gusdal gave a rough figure to the players before Monday morning’s practice and so far this year we have raised close to $40,000 internally for the hockey program. I think that this number is remarkable and is credited to the type of guys we have on the team. Success both on and off the ice this weekend. On Friday night the Vikings won a 7-2 game. The Vikings were out-shot by the Huskies 42-35 however; this was in large part a combination of officiating and undisciplined play. The Vikings had to kill off 9 man advantaged compared to the Huskies 4. You could feel the tension building up between opposing coaches, including when Coach Blaine Gusdal elected a timeout halfway through the second period on Friday because of an icing call. Intensity continued to build over into Saturday’s game. Fourth year forward, Jeremy Biernes, temporarily eased the tension one second into the second period – dropping the gloves with Huskies Second year Captain, Sam Rockwell. The Vikings stayed disciplined and controlled the game by winning 6-2 and the shot clock 42-29. More fireworks continued after the game when the visiting Coach Strand refused the usual ACAC post-game handshake between Head Coaches. It was close to being a John Tortorella moment in between dressing rooms, but nothing resulted except a good ol’ fashioned war of words. Emotion is a big part of the game and I feel that playing ‘on an edge’ is needed to show how much people care. We, The Vikings, care a lot and are in a tight battle in the standings heading into playoffs. Come out and show your emotion and support in the coming games!

The Vikings Ski Team is off and Already taking the Lead! By Joel Danyluk The first cross country ski race of 2014 went well for the Augustana Vikings! The team traveled to Athabasca for a loppett at Muskeg Creek on January 18. After having an interesting week of practice in unseasonably warm temperatures, the team was happy to be on trails that were more snow than ice! While it is always a treat to get to ski in temperatures above zero, the warm weather has caused the hard-packed trail system to turn into a skating rink. Katelyn Cook finished 3rd in her category for the 5km free skate with a time of 29:42 while Taya Hoar, Allyson Saunders, and Ciara Bailey finished 3rd, 4th, and 5th with times of 37:29, 41:29, and 48:44 respectively in the 10km free skate. Matthieu Martin posted a time of 34:11 for 10km with teammates Joedy Dalke and Reece Bailey following close behind at 35:22, and 41:17. Hometown hero Hans Asfeldt won the 20km men’s free skate with a time of 48:27. Next weekend the team will travel to Red Deer for the first races in the Alberta Cup circuit and will do a free skate race on Saturday followed by a classic race on Sunday.

Vikings Curling Teams run Little Rockers Program By Wyatt Warawa

While the Augustana Vikings curling teams are all business when it comes to preparing for the upcoming ACAC Winter Regionals play-downs, they have been enjoying sharing their love of the sport of curling through the Little Rockers program. Little Rockers is an after school program that teaches the fundamentals of curling to elementary aged students in the Camrose area. Each week, members of the Vikings curling teams devote their time and instructors to the program, and teach skills, rules and etiquette in a non-competitive and enjoyable environment. The participants in this program always have smiles on their faces and have shown huge improvements in their skills since the start of the school year. As instructors in the program, the Vikings curling team members have had a very rewarding experience sharing their knowledge and passion for the sport. We are looking forward to seeing the students continue to improve and progress over the vikings.ualberta.ca next several years to possibly become future Vikings themselves!
