Men’s Volleyball Take one and Lose one vs. Briercrest By Thomas Regier The Vikings welcomed the Briercrest Clippers to town this past weekend. The first set was pretty tightly contested until the Clippers pulled ahead at the end of the set to take the best-of-five opener by a score of 25-20. The next 3 sets were also very tight but in all three cases the Vikings were able to come out on top (25-22, 25-23, 29-27) and take Friday night’s match by a score of 3 sets to 1. Devin Varga was awarded player of the game with 11 digs, 3 service aces and 2 stuff blocks. Luke Ryan lead the way in offense with 18 kills as well as contributing 14 digs. Overall Friday’s match was very scrappy with a lot of impressive defensive plays by both teams. However, immediately after the match’s conclusion both teams were already looking ahead towards the short turn around that would bring the afternoon game on Saturday. Saturday started out very similar to Friday’s match. The first set was very tight but once again like Friday night’s first set the Clippers were able to come out on top 25-23. The second set was also tight, but the Clippers once again had the advantage, taking the set 25-22. The third and final set the Vikings made a few lineup changes throughout, and fell into a deep hole early, from which they were never able to recover. The third and final set went to the Clippers by a score of 25-19. Nazheef Gangji received player of the game honors with 10 kills and an impressive 18 digs. A split on the weekend may not have been what the Vikings were hoping for but they still control their own destiny as they currently sit 5th in the ACAC with a 9-7 record and a .563 winning percentage. This upcoming weekend the Vikings play against the Kings University College Eagles. It will be important to win in order for the Vikings to lock up a top six seed and earn an automatic berth into the provincial tournament in a few weeks time. The next Vikings home match will be on Saturday February 8th vs. the Kings University College Eagles. This Saturday there will be a licensed liquor section on the stage for those of you who like to enjoy a cold one or two or seven while watching some exciting volleyball action. The theme is ‘blackout’ (no this doesn’t mean blackout drunk) so bring some black attire and have a great time at the final Vikings volleyball home matches of the season! Hope to see you there.

Women’s Volleyball comes up short against Briercrest By Jenn Laskosky This weekend the Viking Women’s team took on the Briercrest Clippers here at home. On January 31st the ladies came out to a great start. However, they fell short in the first set losing 21-25. In the second set the team ran into some communication issues and were unable to gain back any momentum. They lost the second set 15-25. The team fought back in the third set, trying to come out with a win. However, they once again came up just short, losing 23-25. Player of the game went to power hitter Keri Alcorn. On February 1st the team once again took on the Clippers, but they had a bit of a slow start, losing the first set 16-25. However, the team fought back hard in the second set gaining momentum and winning the set 25-21. In the third set the team continued to push back and play aggressive, but were unable to capture the set. They lost the set 21-25. In the fourth set, the team ran into a few passing and communications issues, however they continued to fight hard and push back. The team was unable to capture the win, losing the set 19-25. Player of the game went to setter Stefanie Zahara. This coming weekend the Viking’s will take on the Kings as they fight for a spot in playoffs. The Viking’s would like to thank their fans for their continued support and encourage them to come out on February 8th for their last home game of the season.

Vikings Hockey Splits Points with Griffins By Harrison Tribble This past week the Vikings Hockey team completed a home and home series with the Grant MacEwan Griffins. On Wednesday night, the Griffins came into the Encana arena with a chip on their shoulder after being swept the previous weekend by the Briercrest Clippers. From the moment the puck dropped the Griffins played with a desperation that proved difficult for the Vikings to match. The Griffins gained a two goal lead by the second period. Craig Cornelson responded for the Vikings to make it 2-1 late in the second, but the Griffins scored early in the third to make it 3-1 MacEwan. The Griffins played a rigid trap, that kept the Vikings offence at bay, until finally with under 5 minutes left in the third Brad Bourke slipped one behind the MacEwan net minder. With the score 3-2, the Vikings continued to press hard for a third goal and a tie game. With 23 seconds left in the game, and a mad scramble going on in front of the Grant MacEwan goal, Adam Johnson was able to corral the puck with silky smooth hands and fire home the tying goal to force overtime. During the extra frame, the Vikings onslaught continued. The Griffins goalie was forced to make several excellent stops and received a little help from his goal post as the clock finally ran down, ending the game in a tie. On Saturday night, the teams met once again at the Bill Hunter Arena in Edmonton, with both teams feeling unsatisfied with Wednesday night’s draw. This time, it was the Vikings who would jump out to an early lead. 19 seconds into the first period Adam Johnson used his world-class backhand to shovel the puck over a sprawling Grant Mac goalie, making it 1-0, where it would stand after 20 minutes. In the second period, Scotty Aucoin (AKA Coiner) made a nice move to slide the puck in and make it 2-0. After scoring, Aucoin pleased the people with a colorful celebration in which he “sheathed his weapon”. The Griffins refused to go quietly, though and scored late in the second to make it 2-1 Vikings going into the third. During the third period, the Vikings had several quality scoring chances, but were unable to find the back of the net. The Griffins scored again, and once more the teams were headed into overtime. During OT, Dane Bonish was sprung on a breakaway during which Griffins backcheckers relentlessly hooked and slashed him until finally the wiry forward went down. The Augustana bench called for a penalty shot, but the referee awarded a 2:00 minute penalty. The Vikings took to the power play with the opportunity to win the game. During the advantage, the Vikings struggled to get organized, and on the only scoring chance they were able to generate, Harrison Tribble’s stick exploded on a one-timer and sent the puck dribbling into the corner. Once again, the teams played to a draw. The Hockey team’s next home action is on Wednesday Feb. 5 when the defending league champion NAIT ooks are in town. Come on down the Encana Arena and catch the action.

Vikings Ski Team Sees Success in Horrible Weather Conditions By Brianna Schultz The cross country ski team left Red Deer last weekend after a great skate race and an interesting turn of events at the Alberta Cup! The team raced on Saturday in a number of different categories with constantly changing snow conditions. Most of the hilly trails were quite icy but not quite to the extent that Camrose had been so we were prepared for whatever the trails had in store. All races were skate technique with an interval start. Distances varied from 5km to 10km. Cameron Raynor had the quickest time for the Vikings men in the 10km spring with a time of 28:49 and coming in 7th place. Matthieu Martin, Joedy Dalke, and Reece Bailey followed close behind and came in 13th, 15th, and 17th place respectively. Ilona Gaypay led the way for the Open Women category for the Vikings placing 10th with a time of 38:37.Taya Hoar, Brianna Schultz, Johanna Ferrie and Allyson Saunders also raced the 10km Open Category placing 11th, 13th, 15th, and 16th. Ciara Bailey and Katelynn Cook placed well in the 7.5km Sport category coming in 3rd and 4th. Coach Tim Wintonin raced in the Masters category and showed the team how it was done, winning his category with a time of 31:32 over 10km. Over the course of the day, winds increased and temperatures plummeted, causing the conditions to grow very difficult for grooming. After attempting in vain to put in classic tracks until 2:00am the following day, the race was forced to be canceled. Due to the unexpected turn of events and pre-klistered skis, the team traveled to the Strathcona Wilderness Centre where conditions were slightly better for 8km and 12km time trials with the U of A main campus ski team. The team would like to say a huge thank you to coach Tim for the hard work he put in waxing skis all weekend. The team will have a break from racing together this weekend as some will be attending a track meet in Calgary and some will participate in the Becky Scott Loppett in Vermillion, AB.

The Mixed and Men’s Curling Teams qualify for Championships By Wyatt Warawa The Augustana Vikings curling teams were in Edmonton this past weekend competing in the ACAC winter regionals hosted by NAIT. Going into winter regionals the women’s team found themselves in a three-way tie for first place, the men’s team was in a tie for second place, and the mixed team was in a tie for third place in the conference. It seemed that the ladies’ team was fighting an uphill battle for their chance at a spot in provincials, as a number of factors conspired against them. An ice plant malfunction in the fall regionals game cut short a game against a tough Red Deer College team in which the Augustana girls were firmly in control of, and then a withdrawal from a winless Portage ladies’ team meant that the Augustana team would miss out on a chance to play them at either regionals and would instead be unlucky enough to play three of the top ranked teams for a second time. Despite these factors, the women’s team found themselves in a three way tie for third place after round robin, in which they were just two points short of advancing on the tie-breaking team draw to the button. They then found themselves in a tie-breaker match against Grande Prairie for the last spot to Provincials but lost a heart-breaker in an extra end. The mixed team had a slow start to the winter regionals but managed to settle their emotions and regroup effectively. Wins on Saturday secured their spot in Provincials and they will cruise into the championships in third place, but knowing they are more than capable of bringing home a fourth consecutive ACAC gold medal banner for Augustana. The men’s team also had a slow start to the winter regionals. A loss in the only match against a Portage team that features former Viking Kyle Leach meant that the men’s team would go into Sunday needing a win to avoid a tiebreaker game against Lakeland. A win Sunday would not come easy against defending national gold and silver medalist skips on the NAIT and Grant MacEwan teams respectively, but the Vikings managed to begin and end the game with scores of 4 in a roller coaster game against NAIT that secured them a spot in the finals. The mixed and men’s teams will now head to Vermilion February 21-24th championships, where a strong showing could also mean a spot in the CCAA national championships in Sault St. Marie, ON for the men’s team.
