Men’s Volleyball Takes on RDC the Number One Team in the Country By Thomas Regier

The Vikings had the tough task of facing the Red Deer College Kings this past weekend: a team who is ranked number 1 in the country and has yet to drop a set in league competition. The Vikings were at home on Thursday night and things started off pretty well, as they split the first two sets. Set number 3 was dominated by the Kings putting them up 2 sets to 1. In the 4th a few untimely errors by the Vikings proved to be the difference. Set scores were 25-22, 20-25, 25-14, and 25-20. Luke Ryan received player of the game honors with 16 kills, a service ace and 8 digs. After a day off from competition on Friday the scene shifted to Red Deer on Saturday night. The Kings came out flying right off the hop and the Vikings were caught flat-footed. Red Deer took the match in straight sets by scores of 25-13, 2521, and 25-16. Second year setter Devin Varga was awarded the player of the game. It is clear there is still some work to be done. There will be some changes made and put on showcase this coming weekend when the Vikings travel to Grande Prairie to take on the Wolves. The next Vikings home game will be on January 31stwhen the Vikings will take on the Briercrest Clippers.

Women’s Volleyball Takes a Set off Top Ranked RDC By Jenn Laskosky

This weekend the Women’s Volleyball Team took on the number one team in the league, the Red Deer Queen’s. On Thursday January 16th the team played at home and came out on fire, taking the first set 25-19. The team had a presence that night and continued to play hard. Their determination to play with the Queen’s was evident. However, they were unable to capture a win and lost the next three matches 20-25, 19-25, and 21-25. Player of the game was awarded to fifth year player, and co-captain, Catherine Laskosky. The team showed significant improvements in their game and it is evident that they will continue to progress. On Saturday January 18th the team traveled to Red Deer hoping to capture a few more wins. Unfortunately the team never got a huge swing in momentum. The ladies fought hard, but were unable to come out victorious. They lost three sets to none with scores of 12-25, 22-25, and 16-25. Player of the game went to Jill Alcorn, who is also another co-captain. The team intends to shake this loss off and come back stronger next weekend as they travel to GPRC. The Women’s team would like to thank all the fans who came out on Thursday night to support them. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Trojans Stifle Vikings Hockey Offense By Harrison Tribble The Vikings hockey team got a rude awakening this past weekend, as they dropped both games of a home-and-home series with the SAIT Trojans. Despite directing over 60 shots at SAIT net-minder Brayden Hopfe, the Vikings were only able to score one goal all weekend. On Friday night, the Trojans made their way to the Encana arena in Camrose. For the third time in four games, the Vikings allowed the first goal early in the first period. Dane Bonish answered back with a power play goal for the Vikings but after that it was all SAIT. Despite out-shooting and out-chancing the Trojans, the Vikes were unable to solve Hopfe again, and lost by a disappointing 5-1 margin. Despite the loss on Friday night, the boys headed to Calgary on Saturday feeling as though they had deserved better. Unfortunately the stingy Trojans defense only got stingier on home ice. And every time the Vikings were able to generate a scoring chance, Hopfe was equally up to the task. The Vikings best scoring chance came in the first period when Brad Bourke fed Kevin Lourens a perfect pass from behind the net to the slot, giving him a wide open net. But just as Lourens got his shot away, the SAIT goaltender sprawled across the crease and got just enough of the puck to keep it out. Once the Trojans got the lead, they immediately started playing the trap, making scoring chances hard to come by for the Vikings. The final score was 3-0 SAIT. A frustrated and disappointed team returned to the Rose City, realizing that if they want to compete with the league’s top teams, they’re going to need to score more than one goal per weekend. Coach Gusdal put the boys through the paces on Monday, and now it’s back to the drawing board. Next weekend the Vikings host the Keyano Huskies for two home games, where they will welcome many former players for the annual alumni weekend. Puck drops at 7:30 Friday and 2:00 on Saturday.

Women’s Basketball Takes Down Briercrest and MHC By Jordan Tomiyama Coming off a 4-point weekend, the Vikings were looking to get another 4 points. This time their competition was the Briercrest Clippers and Medicine Hat Rattlers. Their first game was against the Clippers of Briercrest. In the beginning it was a back and forth affair with the Vikings leading the Clippers 46-35 at half time. The Vikings had a strong second off and ended up winning the game 90-66.Taryn Story was her dominant self - scoring a game high 26 points. Shooting 10-18 from the field and grabbing 6 rebounds. Rookie Talia Dale had a breakout game contributing with 7 points but most importantly 8 rebounds (4 being offensive). Pressure defense was a major factor for the Vikings as they caused the Clippers to turn the ball over 28 times! Augustana owned the rebounding battle as they usually do by grabbing 52 rebounds while the Clippers were able to get 28. Brooke Brisco led Clippers with 17 points and 2 rebounds. Player of the Game went to Sydney Purdy who scored a big 15 points while adding 3 rebounds. Coming off a solid home win, the Vikings were looking to continue their home court dominance against the Medicine Hat Rattlers. The Vikings lead in every statistical category in the first half, which resulted in the Vikings being ahead 45-32. The second half was closely contested but the lead for the Vikings was never in jeopardy as they won 75-59. Balanced scoring was one of the many reasons Leanne Shenton’s team was able to win this ball game. They had four players in double digits with Kari Kubinec leading the way with 23 points. Kubinec had an overall great, balanced game by adding 5 rebounds and assists to her stat line. She was awarded with the player of the game for her efforts. Kelsey Lund was a force in the middle with 12 points and a game high 9 rebounds. The Vikings extended their home record to 7-0 while pushing their overall record to 14-1. Their next games are against the Grand Prairie Wolves and they will battle with star player Kelly O’ Hallahan.

Men’s Basketball loses to Briercrest but Dominates over MHC By Anton Paszek

As the Augustana Men's basketball team took the court this past weekend against Briercrest College on Friday and Medicine Hat College on Saturday. The Vikes were coming off of a very important two game winning streak from the previous weekend as they had defeated Lethbridge College and St. Mary's University College. They hoped to continue their streak starting with Briercrest College. As the game began the Vikings and the Clippers looked to be very evenly matched, but with the Vikings capitalizing on the Clippers zone defense, the Vikes soon took the lead with some impressive shooting from behind the arch. However some early foul trouble for the Augustana guards and a major injury sustained by Vikes captain Landon Vaneck, gave some trouble to the Viking's offense and caused them to drop their early lead. But with their continued defense and high percentage shooting the Vikings managed to keep pace with the Clippers. Although as the game wore on, the Vikings began to lose their shooting confidence from the field and from behind the three point line. The Clippers began to take control of the rebounding and eventually won the game, outscoring the Vikes 85-77. With a renewed energy and need to win, the Vikings took the court the next day against Medicine Hat College, not for a second doubting their ability to win. The Vikings quickly made their presence and dominance known by knocking down consecutive shots from the three, but also by pounding the ball inside and allowing the posts to work their magic. Medicine Hat battled back and gave the Vikings a run for their money a couple of times, but with the combined tenacity on defense and the unbelievable shooting show put on by Vikings guard Lee Danderfer (41 points) the Vikings were able to blow out the Med Hat team 97-66. The Vikings look to upset the fifth place Grande Prairie Regional College this weekend. They will take the court at 8:00 PM Friday January 24, and at 3:00 PM Saturday January 25. The Men's basketball team would like to express their extreme gratitude to all the fans who have been fundamental in their last home game wins and hope to see all of them in the coming games as well.
