MANU LUKSCH ATLAS OF THE LIMINAL: FROM MATTER TO DATA

Developed during the Roberta Denning artist residency 2021 at Stanford University, and as part of Radical Matter, a research project by Die Angewandte and Royal College of Arts supported by the Wissenschaftsfond FWF / PEEK.

Atlas Of The Liminal: From Matter To Data deals with environmental and human health risks caused by Big Tech corporations and questions their central product – algorithmic predicaments and systemic order.

The semiconductor industry boom in the early 1970s left a bi-fold legacy: Silicon Valley is since home to the world's largest high-tech corporations. Less known, contamination by volatile organic compounds is affecting the local population until today, such as TCE, a known carcinogen and immunotoxin that also damages the kidney, liver, and nervous and reproductive systems.

From Matter To Data befasst sich mit den von BigTech-Konzernen verursachten Risiken für Umwelt und Gesundheit und hinterfragt deren zentrales Produkt – algorithmisch generierte Bedingungen und Ordnungssysteme.

Der Boom der Halbleiterindustrie in den frühen 1970er Jahren hat ein zweifaches Erbe hinterlassen: Das Silicon Valley beherbergt seitdem die größten High-Tech-Unternehmen der Welt. Weniger bekannt ist, dass die Kontamination durch flüchtige organische Verbindungen die lokale Bevölkerung bis heute beeinträchtigt, z. B. durch TCE, ein bekanntes Karzinogen und Immuntoxin, das auch Nieren, Leber, sowie das Nerven- und Fortplanzungssystem schädigt.

Die Serie entstand aus Drohnenaufnahmen schwerst kontaminierter Standorte in Silicon Valley, wo gegenwärtig der intellektuelle Überbau unserer vermeintlich entmaterialisierten Kultur entworfen wird. Unterschiedliche algorithmische Interpretationen der Bilddatensätze in Paaren: ein Atlas der Zwischenräume, Stadt aus zerbrochenem Quarz, neu arrangiert. Nach Größe? Form? Motiv? - Nach Maschinenlogik.

For this series, contaminated locations in Silicon Valley were mapped by drone, sites where the intellectual superstructure of our supposedly dematerialised culture is designed. Each pair of prints brings together two different algorithmic interpretations of the aereal image data sets: an atlas of interstices, the city of shattered quartz, reassembled. By size? Shape? Motif? - By machine logic, a model kit not yet built.
