The Hatchery, An Aquatic Lab wurde von der in Athen geborenen und in New York lebenden Künstlerin Jenny Marketou für das "House of CHALLENGING ORDERS" konzipiert. “Hatchery” bedeutet Brutstätte, ein Ort der Erneuerung und Transformation, an dem sich die natürliche und die künstliche Welt treffen. Marketou erschafft ein Ökosystem aus toten Austern und Sand als "Akteure" (Bruno Latour), um auf die aktiven Kräfte von Materialien hinzuweisen, die in indigene Erzählungen sowie historische und ökologische Abläufe hineinwirken. Das Video Rivering (2022) ist das Ergebnis von Marketous wassergebundenem Forschungsprojekt während ihres laufenden Aufenthalts bei The Billion Oyster Project und The Harbor School auf Governors Island in New York. Rivering ist ein kollaboratives, schwimmendes System von Wassermarkern, das sich dem Denken mit dem Wasser widmet und gleichzeitig die Verbindung der Stadt New York mit ihren Wasserwegen, ihren Austernriffen und unserer Umwelt hinterfragt. Darüber hinaus zeigt ein hängendes Banner Texte von Expert:innen des Weltwasserrechts. Im Laufe der Ausstellung werden die Austernschalen in von der Künstlerin geleiteten Workshops verwendet, um künstliche Austernhügel zu schaffen, die mit Hilfe von 3D-Druckmodellen hergestellt werden.

The Hatchery, An Aquatic Lab, is conceived by artist Jenny Marketou born in Athens, based in New York for the “House of CHALLENGING ORDERS”. Hatchery means a breeding place, a place for replenishing and transformation where the natural and the artificial world meet. Marketou creates an ecosystem out of dead oysters and sand as an “actant” (Bruno Latour), to indicate the active powers of materials that intervene upon indigenous storytelling as well as historical and ecological trajectories. The video Rivering (2022) draws from Marketou’s water bound research project during her ongoing residency with The Billion Oyster Project and The Harbor School on Governors island in New York. Rivering is a collaborative floating system of water markers dedicated to thinking with the water while challenging New York’ City’s connection with its waterways, its oyster reefs and to our environment. In addition a hanging banner features textual experts from The World Water Law. In the course of the exhibition the oyster shells will be used during workshops led by the artist to create artificial mounds of oysters which are produced using 3D printing modeling.
