Dear Fellow Members,
A s we transition from summer into fall, I hope this letter finds you well and eager for the upcoming season at the Club. The vibrant energy of our summer events will soon give way to the crisp air of autumn, bringing with it new opportunities to enjoy and celebrate together.
First, I want to extend heartfelt congratulations once again to Jules Paoli on his well-deserved retirement. Jules has dedicated 30 years to our Club, demonstrating unwavering commitment, meticulous attention to detail, and an exceptional care for our community. To honor Jules and bid him a proper farewell, we invite you to join us on September 5th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Vicmead for his retirement reception. This special event will also coincide with our final BBQ of the season, offering a wonderful opportunity to celebrate both Jules and the end of summer.
A s we navigate the final days of pool season, please take note of our adjusted hours of operation. Don't miss out on the "Pups in the Pool" event. Whether you bring a furry friend or simply come to enjoy the festivities, you can look forward to drinks, a complimentary hot dog, and the joy of summer’s last splash.
L ooking ahead, our Development Ad-Hoc Committee, Board, and Executive Committee are diligently preparing to present the proposed project for the Club. We are thrilled to share the fruits of their labor with you soon. In the meantime, I encourage you to continue following their progress through the upcoming installment in the series on infrastructure (see page 4 for more details). Your engagement remains crucial as we move forward with these exciting developments.
In addition, our Racquets team is eager to introduce new members to the joys of Paddle and Squash. Throughout September and October, the team is offering complimentary clinics for those who have never picked up a racquet before. No need to purchase any equipment—just bring yourself and discover a new way to enjoy your club!
A s dining transitions into the fall season, we have several noteworthy events to look forward to. Join us for the Back to School Pool Party (Sept. 1st), the Farm to Table Dinner (Sept. 7th), a new Taco Tuesday event (Sept. 17th) and the scrumptious Fin & Feathers Dinner (Sept. 26th). We are expanding our Bidermann Dinner Service schedule to include Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings this month. Be sure to make a reservation to enjoy a delicious meal against the stunning backdrop of our the golf course as we embrace the changing season.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.
Warm regards,
David Solacoff, M.D. President
5 Wells, 12 Septic Tanks, and approximately 6,835 Feet of Utility Lines
As the Development Ad-Hoc Committee continues to work on the Concept Design of the Clubhouse and surrounding site, we are committed to continuing to sharing information about our process. As we discussed in the August Newsletter, the campus infrastructure is critical in the planning phase. For the second installment of this series, we move from wells and water to our septic systems. Jules Paoli, Facilities Director, provides insight on the septic considerations on Vicmead’s campus.
Can you help us understand how Vicmead's septic system works throughout the property?
Jules:
"Our sprawling multi-purpose property has a combination of three types of septic systems: standard, low-pressure dose, and supplemental treatment.
At the Vicmead Clubhouse we have a standard/supplemental treatment system with a grease trap (installed in 1999), a Klargester with a low pressure micro-drip system which also handles the clubhouse and pool/poolhouse septic system. The micro-drip is why our front field is always green!
A newer low-pressure system was recently installed at the Stables
2020. The Indoor racquets building utilizes a low-pressure septic system and pump tank installed in 1997."
What septic considerations do we need to think about as we consider our proposed renovation project?
Jules:
"From a design perspective, we need to consider property setbacks and restrictions, as well as not infringing on our established micro-drip system and other related septic fields. When teh time comes for a new septic field, we've already completed the pre-survey work and we've determined that one can be added to our existing system (closest to Owls Nest Road).
answer continued
There are a few other facts that we must take into considersation as well:
• The pool is on this system
• The Indoor Racquets building's septic field is located below the building. Because it is our oldest system, we pay more attention to these units.
• The Stables unit is the newest system and has more capacity. The current units were installed up to 27 years ago. Newer systems have more advanced technology, efficiencies and equipment options. To avoid a failure or any issue that would impact Member Experience and the Club’s ability to operate safely, we must keep our systems current"
How do we manage the capacity and ensure the systems remain an asset for the Club?
Jules:
"We [the Facilities team] take weekly readings to monitor the health of our septic system, and to ensure required maintenance and part replacement are coordinated well in advance of a failure."

September means one thing to us – fall golf is nearly here! We have been looking forward to this period of time for a few months now. The summer was a difficult one for cool season turfgrasses, especially the month of July and the Agronomy team did a magnificent job of preserving outstanding course conditions through difficult stretches of tough summer weather.
In the month of July, only 6 days had a daily average temperature was below 75 degrees; this is warm! The high daily average temperature is indicative of warm nights, warm days, high dew points, and high humidity. It creates a stressful time for turfgrass as well as a breeding ground for turf diseases.
The new irrigation system has been working hard this summer and has done its part to help preserve great turf conditions. Tweaking the control system and learning about the extents of the newest tool remain a priority, but the positive impact it has had this golf season is obvious.
The same can be said for the new bunker complexes. During the middle of August, we experienced heavy rain from the remnants of tropical storm Debby. With minimal washouts, the team was able to focus on restoring great course conditions in the wake of the storm.
As a reminder, the golf course green’s aeration is scheduled for the week of October 14th. It is too soon to tell what the exact process will be but want to ensure that this time frame is on your radar. The golf course and practice greens will be closed from October 14th-17th with 9 holes and practice greens opening at 11 a.m. on October 18th.
Fairway aerification will commence during the week of October 21st. During this time, the course is open for play except for the holes the team is working on that day.
Finally, we are proud to have Mat Zimmerman, one of our leadership team members, graduate from the Penn State University Turfgrass Science Program. Mat has found his calling as a turf professional and we are proud of the hard work he has put in to earn his degree. The Club has helped support Mat in his endeavors at school and in on the job training and it speaks volumes to the membership support we receive to develop our young professionals!
