While families that eat together stay together, couples that stay together might increasingly sleep apart. 'Sleep divorce', say the experts, can sometimes be a marriage saver. Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her muralist husband Diego Rivera took this to another level – quite literally – by living in neighbouring houses joined by an elevated bridge. Not that it necessarily saved their tempestuous relationship, which was marked by blazing rows and infidelity right up until its premature end.
Head to page 88 for Finding Frida –a highlight of our gorgeous Mexico Moments feature – which delves into the life of this cultural icon. I must admit to harbouring some initial reluctance to covering her, worried she was too obvious a choice, but Arna insisted, and I bowed to her far superior art knowledge. I’m glad I did. Beyond her extraordinary talent, Frida’s strength and stoicism
in the face of unimaginable personal hurdles are both inspirational and profoundly humbling.
Strength runs through the spine of our October issue like a reinforced steel rod as we celebrate the best and brightest of Aotearoa New Zealand’s design and construction industries in this year’s Best in Build. Don’t miss our chat with Nat Jakich of architect–builder studio Box™ on page 32, and the moody magnificence of the Kitchens by Design project on page 54.
First, we get revving with some of the most spectacular automotive architecture on Earth, with BMW leading the charge from Munich.
Buckle up and enjoy the issue… it’s a helluva read!

WORDS – TIM WARREN
Driving the BMW X1 is like reconnecting with an old friend who has retained their youth and vigour.
You love them, they're great – and they look younger and better than ever. That's my experience with the latest model. Only 78km new, yet familiar enough to jump straight in and get going.
This is a small SUV that acts like a medium-sized one. It's spacious, but easy to drive, especially around town and in tight places. Externally, it's handsome with attractive rims and defined lines that deserve a double take. The grille, with its striking double-kidney design, is suggestive of a larger vehicle. The good looks continue with attractive details and lights, and then there’s the practicality of the built-in roof rack.
The X1 features a function screen and also retains quality physical controls for ventilation, lights, and other functions. The dash, restrained yet functional, provides a choice of content from navigation to media, so with the heads up display the driver can stay focused on the job at hand. Voice control enables most non-driving functions to be requested following the 'Hey BMW' activation phrase.
This model is the sDrive 18i, which has a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder engine driving the front wheels. This engine is a honey: perky, silent, and responsive. It’s not a sports car but is not lacking across urban, highway, and intercity usage. Steering and handling are precise. The pointy front end and high grip level again give the confidence of a larger vehicle, while the brakes have a good feel – akin to a sports car. It has all the assistance and safety functions you might need, from lane holding to responsive cruise control, making it a pleasure to pilot in any setting. Driving modes include Sport, Efficient and Personal for further control.
This car is full of top-of-the-range features, like wireless phone connection and charging, all-electric adjustable seats and more. The BMW camera package is class-leading and accurate, allowing you to get out of small spaces with ease, and if you need more help, a reversing assistant is available.
It's an effortless car to drive and use. BMW tend to over-deliver, leaving a smile on your face and the satisfaction of beating expectations. This applies to performance, looks, and usability. This car is a treasure. Even though the X1 is the newest in the X lineup, it feels like an old friend.
BMW X1 starts from $76,100. The car shown also features the M Sport Package and optional 20” rims.
This month, Dr Cameron Schauer, gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist, offers a positive focus on harnessing the power of a healthy gut.
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of colon or bowel cancer in the world – it’s the equivalent of the same number of Kiwis dying of breast and prostate cancer combined. But it shouldn’t be that way, for bowel cancer is not only preventable, but beatable and treatable if diagnosed early enough.
At Waitematā Endoscopy, providing exceptional endoscopy care is our purpose and what motivates our team. With two state-of-the-art clinics in Henderson and on the North Shore, we are dedicated to ensuring that timely and quality care is never far from where you live and work. With two state-ofthe-art clinics in Henderson and on the North Shore, we are dedicated to ensuring that timely and quality care is never far from where you live and work in Auckland.
Even with such startling statistics, more than 50% of bowel cancers are due to modifiable risk factors – things that are within your control that you can change to improve your gut health and overall health. Studies of immigrants show that when people move from a country with a low incidence of bowel cancer to one with a high incidence, their risk of developing the disease rises to match that of the host country within just one generation.
Other factors like age, male gender, family history, inflammatory bowel conditions are out of your control.
So, here are some things that you focus on, starting from today, to make sure you and your family stay safe and healthy.
It’s hard to lose weight. But this is the number one modifiable cause in New Zealand of excess colon cancer.
A way to start :
· Keep track of what you currently eat in a food diary.
Reduce processed foods and focus on whole foods –food that has not been modified so much. This includes vegetables, meats, and grains.
E at a hearty breakfast with protein which will give you a full tank of petrol for the day. Think an egg with cheese or veggies that will keep you full and prevent snacking at morning tea.
· Reduce or remove liquid calories – this means the likes of soft drinks and coffees in cans. Even ‘healthy’ purchased smoothies have a lot of processed components and sugars. Substitute with water.
Manage your portions – eat off a smaller plate, and stop eating when you are satisfied, not when you are full.
· Don’t aim for perfection straight away – choose realistic goals like starting with 10 minutes of walking after dinner, no fizzy drinks during the week, and takeaways only twice a month.
Reduce alcohol
In New Zealand, this is the second largest factor contributing to our high rates of colon cancer. Your risk increases by more than 44% if you are a heavy drinker.
Reduce red and processed meat
I love my barbecue – even in winter! I have to consciously cut down my consumption, and do my best by swapping this out 3-4 nights per week for beans, pasta, stir fries, and chicken!
Move!
Start by walking after a meal. Write down how much you did. Aim to increase this to 20-30 minutes every second day. Build this as a habit – it will take time, but it can change your life. People who exercise (regardless of what they eat) have a healthier, more diversified microbiome and healthier gut, and decreased risk of bowel cancer. You may also notice an improvement in bloating and regularity of stool, particularly if you were tending to pass firmer motions.
Be aware of your ‘normal.’
If your bowel habit changes (stool frequency or consistency), if you are developing abdominal symptoms such as bloating or pain, if there is blood or mucus when passing stool – get this checked out. Many cases in New
Zealand are diagnosed when its too late. Be proactive – it may well save your life.
Early detection improves outcomes, and a colonoscopy should be seen not as something to fear, but as a proactive step toward safeguarding your health and ensuring peace of mind for you and your family.
At Waitematā Endoscopy, we are reducing wait times. By matching you with the earliest available specialist across our two clinics, we can offer a colonoscopy within seven working days of a GP or self-referral.

“The sea is in my blood,” says Pat. “My father was a master mariner; my grandfather was the Harbour Master of New Plymouth. I’ve always needed to be near the water.” Her parents met in London, her father a New Zealander, her mother English, and after the war the young family sailed to Auckland where she’s stayed near the harbour ever since. “I’ve lived on the Shore all my life,” Pat smiles. “Takapuna, Devonport, the East Coast Bays… walking to the beach was just what you did – we didn’t have a car back then.”
There’s a lifetime of salt air in her stories. In her fifties, Pat took up sailing with friends in a Tracker Association fleet, harbour races, weekends cruising the Gulf, quiet bays where theirs was the only boat. “We’re so lucky here,” she says. “So many islands, so many anchorages. It’s a beautiful way to live.”
Pat married in the early 1960s and raised a son and daughter. Life then was simple and homegrown: road trips in old cars, parties in lounge rooms, shows at the Civic, His Majesty’s, and The Mercury - a place as much a part of Auckland’s story as it was of Pat’s. “My husband wasn’t into shows, but I was,” she laughs. “Opera, Gilbert & Sullivan, concerts at the Town Hall, I loved them all.” That love remains; living at Waterford keeps performances and friends close.
Her working life was shaped by purpose. Pat taught in primary schools for 44 years, including 33 at Birkenhead, where she became assistant principal. “The best part now is meeting parents and hearing what those children, now adults, have done,” she says. “Trades, businesses, academia, it’s all wonderful. Somewhere along the way I helped teach them to read and write.” After retiring, she continued tutoring one-to-one, including migrant families, until recently.
After decades in a two-storey home with a large garden, Pat began to rethink “home.” Rates, maintenance and insurance kept creeping up. “I realised I was really living downstairs,” she says. “Which isn’t so different from an apartment.” She knew her priorities: stay by the sea, stay local, and choose a smaller, friendly community.
Waterford checked every box. “I had a choice of apartments when I came to look,” she recalls. “When my family visited they said it felt like a five-star hotel.” She chose one facing the upper Waitematā, shimmering water by day, sunsets at night. She furnished it from scratch, lighter, modern pieces to fit the space. “It was exciting to start fresh.”
Settling in, Pat embraced village life. On her first Friday she braved the fish-and-chip night, a standing date that fills the lounge with chatter. “I asked a neighbour if I could come with her,” she says. “She introduced me to a whole group. Immediately there were familiar faces next time.” Today she’s secretary of the Residents’ Association and on the roster for the village bar, “a great way to learn names,” serving Wednesday tipples and Friday glasses alongside dinner.
Her week blends life in and out of the village. Mondays it’s Zumba; Wednesdays deep-water jogging at the Millennium Pool with friends; Fridays the on-site balance and strength class. The Waterford pool, gym, hairdresser and podiatrist are there when she wants them, but she loves that the village opens outward. “I can walk to the ferry, cafes and boardwalks. Everything is beautifully kept. It’s the best of both worlds.” She still heads to shows with friends and loves that everything she enjoyed before is reachable.
Pat credits her positive outlook to her family. “Attitude,” she says simply. They remain an anchor, and Pat is grateful for their support. “My children thought moving here was a wonderful idea,” she says. “When they came to visit, they couldn’t believe it. They said it felt like a resort.” Her wider family are close-knit too. Pat is one of three sisters and together they share outings, theatre visits and traditions. Her mother lived independently to 104, a fact that leaves Pat proud and pragmatic. “I didn’t want to place a burden of care on my family,” she says. “Moving here was my decision, my way of staying independent, supported and connected.”
Then she offers the line that sums up why Waterford feels like the right choice at the right time: “As I sit on my balcony with a cup of tea, looking at the shimmering upper Waitematā Harbour, or in the evening with a glass of wine, watching the sunset reflect on the water, I’m reminded of why I chose Waterford. This is home.”

BMW’S WELT & MUSEUM
BMW Welt is a striking architectural landmark where visitors explore the breadth of the BMW Group brands – BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, Motorrad –including the opportunity to view that lineups’ latest models. The free-to-enter Munich venue also offers guided tours and workshops, while just a short walk opposite awaits the BMW Museum which allows a journey through more than 100 years of motoring magnificence.
Its exhibitions cover the company’s origins, design, technology, motorsport legacies, series models, motorcycle heritage, brand evolution – and even remembrance. Together, these two venues offer both a modern showcase of innovation and a historical narrative of BMW’s incredible development.
The handsome Louwman Museum houses the world’s oldest private automobile collection, in assembly since 1934 by the institution’s eponymous family, and housing nearly 300 cars, some of which reach back to the late 19th century.
Adding to its allure, the building, designed by American architect Michael Graves, and its landscaping by Dutch designer Lodewijk Baljon, blend gracefully into the surroundings in South Holland in the Netherlands.
Aston Martin recently unveiled N°001 Minami Aoyama, its first ultra-luxury private residence in Asia. Created in partnership with VIBROA Inc., the four-storey townhouse sits in Tokyo’s coveted Omotesandō neighbourhood, with a highlight being the automotive gallery, designed to display two Aston Martins as sculptural works of art. This offering continues the brand’s bespoke residential ventures, following the Aston Martin Residences in Miami and The Astera on Al Marjan Island in the Persian Gulf, uniting architectural design with automotive-inspired luxury living.
Perched on Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile district of Los Angeles, the Petersen Automotive Museum is a nonprofit shrine to car culture, founded in 1994 by Robert E Petersen. This year marks a decade since its spectacular US$125 million renovation, now boasting an eye-catching facade, more than 25 galleries, interactive exhibits, and over 100 vehicles on display. Head to the Vault to feast your eyes on more than 300 of the rarest vehicles ever assembled, a collection that spans more than 120 years and includes vintage and Hollywood rides.
The Car Towers in Wolfsburg are two striking 48-metre high, cylindrical structures forming the landmark Volkswagen Group facility of Autostadt, which, when combined can hold up to 800 new cars. Serving as both a storage facility and delivery hub, cars arrive from nearby factories via a rolling conveyor into a basement, then are lifted effortlessly into their final spot inside the towers – all in under two minutes. When buyers come to collect their vehicles, the system retrieves the car and brings it through an underground tunnel to the Customer Centre for final licence plates and handover. The towers even hold the Guinness World Record for the fastest automatic parking system!
MERCEDES BENZ MUSEUM
Opened in 2006, the Mercedes-Benz Museum shimmers in Stuttgart, Germany. Its spectacular architecture, by UNStudio van Berkel & Bos, features a doublehelix interior and three overlapping circles which merge beautiful design with the most efficient use of space. The museum spans nine levels and displays more than 160 vehicles and over 1,500 exhibits, including the 1886 Benz PatentMotorwagen and luxury, motorsport, commercial vehicles, as well as concepts of the future.

Located beside the company’s headquarters in Stuttgart, the futuristic Porsche Museum was designed by Delugan Meissl. The 56,000sqm exhibition hall holds more than 80 vehicles as well as 200 smaller exhibit spaces with visitors travelling through chronologically arranged zones, seeing classics like the Porsche 356 “No. 1” Roadster, the 911 family, and racing legends like the 917. The museum also includes a historical archive, a workshop for classic restoration, multiple dining venues, and event spaces.

The X5 is a Sports Activity Vehicle – ‘SAV’
With more than 6,200 sold in NZ, it’s BMW’s most popular vehicle.
And now, we’re putting it to the ultimate urban evaluation. Yes, I've done the everyday round town in this (it’s great by the way), but this time we’re moving house!
Folding down the seats creates a cavernous loading space, enough for the queen mattress. I pile on a disassembled table (the chairs follow on the next trip), a house load of art, mirrors, home stereo and a large collection of vinyl LPs. All that, yet it drives like a daily.
The next two trips I have a trailer attached. With a three-and-ahalf-tonne tow limit, the 3.0 litre diesel does not even notice the hundreds of kilograms I stow – and I have ample visibility.
There's a sense in any BMW that the driver is at the centre of design. It's true for the performance models and the big sellers like this one. It might be very practical, yet it’s enjoyable to drive – and the driver buys the car. Contributing to that driver enjoyment factor is the performance. The xDrive30d power is 219kW and torque a mighty 670Nm through all four wheels for 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds (with a max speed of 233km/h should you find an autobahn).
The car has a noticeable presence. Strong lines make handsome, while the distinctive kidney grille marks out that ‘this is a BMW’. The exterior continues to impress with its subtle
features such as the detail in the lights and the all-over highquality finish. The sunroof is enormous, reaching from in front of the driver to behind the rear passengers. BMW camera visibility is class leading, showing you an augmented reality view including the wheels and drive path. This system is more accurate on this larger vehicle than those on some smaller cars.
Even this entry level version we are driving has a lot of standard equipment. For the exterior, this includes LED headlights and rear lights, roof rails, an automatic tailgate, and 20-inch rims – the list goes on. Inside showcases the latest electronics including the BMW Live Cockpit Professional with 12.3-inch instrument cluster for the driver and a high resolution 14.9-inch curved centre display.
The day I moved was hot and we were thankful for the potent air conditioning, although I didn’t need the heated sport seats. The driver benefits from the eight-speed auto with shift paddles, plus they get active cruise control with emergency stop. We needed this when someone pulled in front of us.
The X5 was ideal for our house move ‘practicality’ test and I've got no doubt it would be flawless on a longer road trip and I would go off-road with it. So, even though this car can drop you off and look regal at the charity dinner, it can mix it up in the back blocks as well.
Oh, and move house!

This crafted new build in one of Auckland’s special character suburbs employed traditional gable forms and cedar weatherboard cladding to sit comfortably alongside neighbouring heritage homes while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic.
I am told it’s spring. The trees in my garden are showing signs of spring with new leaves appearing. But every year spring is announced and then cold and rainy winter weather returns.
However, everyone is turning their attention to the garden. They don't stop growing in the winter. Don't underestimate the value of a wellmaintained garden both to yourself and the value of your house.
Gardens are associated with wealthier suburbs. They have established gardens and mature trees. Gardens complete the house. Gardens do cost time and money to maintain. They need feeding, watering, weeding, and then pruning or cutting back. It's never ending.
We all love nature – be it a walk in a park or a bush tramp, gardens are just a smaller version of nature.
WORDS PAUL LEUSCHKE
On the bright side, we hear constantly about indoor-outdoor flow. Outdoor flow usually means out onto a deck or terrace in the garden. So now it's you and the garden, close up.
Screen planting and hedging can give you privacy. A specimen tree can block out that first-floor neighbour’s window overlooking you. A deciduous tree will block harsh westerly sun in the summer but shed its leaves in the winter to allow low-penetrating winter sun. A lawn a play area.
Growing up, mowing the lawn was a weekly fight. I now realise a wellmown lawn hides a hundred sins in an unmaintained garden. Smaller gardens take more effort because you can't hide the lack of maintenance. They need even more care in plant selection.
Gardens bring colour and scent. They also bring bird and insect life; I love the
fat bumblebees. While we have a lemon and lime tree, the best value for us is the herb garden. Nothing beats picking fresh herbs for salads and cooking.
In the winter, the glass in windows look black and cold, especially if it's raining. By turning on the garden lights, the glass disappears giving you a view into the garden, helping you forget its cold and your stuck inside. Gardens aren't just for summer.
I would recommend you engage a landscape architect or garden designer. They know the right plants for sun or shade and the height they grow to. For my first house, I didn't use one and over planted – meaning I cut two thirds of the plants out a year later. Lesson learnt.

We create spaces for your life. Spaces crafted for your way of living. Spaces that become a part of your day and your legacy. Inspire. Soothe. Motivate. Escape.
At Day Architects, we begin every project by listening to how you want your spaces to support you. How should it feel when you move through them? Do they respond to the sights and sounds of their landscape? Do they adapt throughout the day as the sun tracks across the sky? Do they reflect you?
We go beyond aesthetics to craft with purpose and precision. With many successfully completed projects across New Zealand, you can be sure our creativity will elevate your senses with carefully considered materials, textures, colours and contours.
Let’s chat about your ideas for creating a space that moves you.
We chat with Nat Jakich, the “building brains” of Box™ about how the architect builder studio has revolutionised the industry.
Could you share the inspiration behind Box™ and how it offers a different experience?
Core to our ethos is the idea of a ‘joined-up’ team of designers, builders and other professionals working together – some with over 30 years’ experience. We love the process of designing and building homes. Our team brings a wealth of experience in residential design and construction, working closely with a trusted network of professionals and subcontractors with whom we’ve built long-standing relationships. We support local business and suppliers –promoting them through Collective by Box – so it’s just part of our fabric. This strong sense of loyalty – both within our team and across our network – enables us to consistently deliver enjoyable, seamless experiences for every client.
What architectural styles do you offer?
If you were to pin us down, we’d say: “Modern Contemporary with a focus on soft and natural materials to finish.” The styles depend on our clients who come to us for the combined design and build approach, so we have been involved in everything from villa renovation to one-off architectural buildings.
How do you approach energy efficiency and eco-friendly building practices without compromising on style?
We don’t, explicitly – it’s just part of good design. North-facing doors or a concrete floor are good for passive solar design, and just make good sense if you’re designing a comfortable living space.
How do you see Kiwi attitudes toward housing and lifestyle evolving?
While the desire for a secure, personal space remains strong, there's a growing appreciation for homes that support connection – spaces that make it easy to gather with whānau
and friends, as simple as open-plan kitchens and dining areas. In our larger cities, the future of housing lies in greater residential density within walking distance of reliable public transport. Most New Zealanders are fortunate to live near incredible public spaces and recreational areas, meaning the traditional quarter-acre dream is giving way to a more connected way of living. This shift is not just a necessity, it’s an opportunity.
Any projects that have been especially challenging, or satisfying?
Tough question – they all have unique challenges! Architectural homes on steep or tight sections are challenging at the best of times, so delivering them is exciting. The memorable ones are often triggered by a client returning to us years later, for something as simple as needing a specification or as big as looking at building number two. When your clients are comfortable enough to stay in touch for a lifetime that is for me, project satisfaction.
Any upcoming plans or projects that you’d like to share?
We have been in this business for a long time now. Over the next five years, we’d like to spend more time working on the business than in it! Bringing in new leaders and passion to our team and delivery is a goal that’s tougher than building a house! I love the idea of being there at any time for anyone in the team, but would love to eventually put someone else in the driver’s seat while being able to keep a careful eye on how projects are delivered and ensuring the happiness of our clients.

Lahood® Window Furnishings has unveiled its latest showroom display theme, Urban Oasis – a celebration of modern living that blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors. Natureinspired designs, earthy tones and tactile textures bring botanical serenity inside, while outdoor screens, rugs, cushions and contemporary furniture create stylish open-air sanctuaries for patios, decks, and courtyards.
A highlight of the new displays is the Highgrove collection from UK heritage brand Sanderson . Inspired by the enchanting Highgrove gardens, nurtured for over four decades by His Majesty King Charles III, the collection features both new and revived designs developed in partnership with the educational charity, The King’s
Foundation. From the structured elegance of the ‘Topiary View’ motif to the joyful bursts of colour in the ‘Hydrangea and Rose’ design, the collection offers the essence of royal gardens for everyday living.
Adding to the theme of nature indoors, Lahood is also showcasing the latest botanical fabrics from Studio Onethirty, the Australian design house led by artist Sarah Frowen. Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud of Grand Designs gives his advice on how to deal with creative conflict.
Designing a home, be it a bold new build, a modest extension, or the simple repositioning of a few pieces of furniture, is very rarely a solitary pursuit, even if you think it is!
Even if you’re the one drawing up the plans, ordering the tiles and trawling through colour cards with a fanatical gleam in your eye, the chances are there’s at least one other person involved, and often more. That could be a spouse, a partner, a child… perhaps even a nosey neighbour.
For the most part we should welcome the thoughts and opinions of others. That neighbour to one side, homes are shared spaces, and designing one together is a pleasure that we should all savour. Yet just because the idea of making a home unique and special is a wonderful one, the process for getting there can frequently be discordant!
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen couples on Grand Designs argue – in the nicest, most British way possible, of course! – over light fittings, tap choices or whether their concrete island is too brutalist. Often, it's the little things that cause the biggest friction… not because they matter more, but because by the time you get to them, patience and budget have both worn thin.
Yet here’s the truth: compromise doesn’t have to mean mediocrity. It means creativity. It means listening, editing, finessing. It’s a skill to take two ideas and find a third: one that
pleases both parties and enhances the space. Indeed, some of the finest designs I’ve seen are not the work of one single visionary, but the result of a constructive domestic dialogue.
My advice? Start with the fundamentals. Talk early, and talk honestly about how you want to live… not just what shade the kitchen cupboards should be.
Define your priorities, write them down, and return to them when the debate about pendant lights turns heated. Also, allow each other a little space. It’s entirely permissible for one of you to care passionately about the flooring while the other obsesses over soft furnishings.
Ultimately, a home is not just a reflection of taste, it’s a reflection of life together. And if you can make it through the argument over whether the toilet roll holder should be wall-mounted or freestanding, I daresay you can make it through anything!

When Jason Clark was a top-performing agent at a corporate agency, he began to see the limits of working under someone else’s banner. With the encouragement and support of his wife, Kelly, Jason took the bold step of launching under his own name – a move that quickly proved the power of boutique branding in real estate. “We realised early on that who Jason worked for wasn’t really a priority for clients, they just wanted to secure his expertise,” Kelly tells Verve
So, together, Jason and Kelly refined their idea into a replicable model, which laid the foundations for AndCo
Realty Group. Soon after, they were approached by Craig Lowe, and the first AndCo was built - now one of Wellington’s most successful agencies - Lowe & Co. Craig became a partner, and they built a model entered around strong systems, mentorship, and support—empowering top-performing salespeople to build equity in their own brand, rather than someone else’s. Having recently being awarded Consumer NZ’s People’s Choice Award for Real Estate, the AndCo model has proven their enviable rapport with home- owners, buyers and agents alike across the country.
“For us, it means designing your business around the life you want, not the other way around.”

Tell us more about the inspiration behind creating this business model?
Jason : After nearly two decades in the industry, we saw a recurring pattern: top-performing agents outgrowing the traditional agency model but not knowing how to take that next step. These are incredibly driven people –creative, strategic, customer-obsessed – but they’re often locked into a structure that limits their potential.
Kelly : We wanted to build a bridge between being a high-earning salesperson and becoming a confident, well-supported business owner.
What’s the biggest misconception agents have about starting their own brand?
J : That they have to do it alone. Or worse, that success means losing balance. We’ve built a platform that handles everything from brand identity and systems to mentoring and supervision. It’s still hard work, of course, but the difference is, you’re building equity in your own name. And that changes everything.
How is this different from a typical franchise or agency model?
K : This isn’t a franchise. This is bespoke. Our partners don’t operate under our identity– we help them build theirs. They’re able to tailor our brand to suit their market. It’s like moving from being a top chef in someone else’s kitchen to opening your own signature
restaurant, with a team behind you to ensure it launches beautifully. We’re here for mentoring too, and with our combined strengths plus the backing of our support team, Cameron Hill and Lisa Cockerell, we provide 24/7 support, training, and advice—so with all five of us bringing different strengths, there’s always someone available to help.
What kind of person thrives in your model?
J : Someone who’s outgrown chasing commission and is ready to build a legacy. Someone who values freedom but doesn’t want to reinvent the wheel. Our people are often already the ones setting standards in their offices.
K : They’ve mastered the craft. Now they want to create something more meaningful – for themselves, their clients, and their lifestyle.
There’s a lot of talk in business about ‘lifestyle’. What does that mean in real estate?
J : For us, it means designing your business around the life you want, not the other way around. It’s the difference between being on call 24/7 and creating a model that’s lean, high-touch, and built on quality relationships.
K : When your brand is aligned with your values, you attract better clients, more loyalty, and the freedom to make decisions that are better for you. It’s not just real estate—it’s leadership and
lifestyle combined – all within a network of likeminded entrepreneurs who collaborate, build relationships across the country and uplift each other, and they’re all just a phone-call away.
What’s one story that captures what your company is all about?
J : Adriana Wilton’s story is a standout success story within AndCo. Already a top salesperson in a large corporate agency, Adriana made the bold decision to step away from the security of that role to create something of her own. With AndCo’s guidance and support, and our assistance in getting her into her commercial building, she launched Wilton & Co during the Covid lockdown — a time when starting a new business was no small undertaking. From those early beginnings, Wilton & Co has grown steadily into a market leader, now holding a 21% market share.
K : Wilton & Co has become a family venture, with Adriana’s husband joining her along the way. As with many of the 22 AndCo agencies, it’s common to see partners and children become part of the journey. Most recently, Adriana has expanded into property management, building a strong portfolio and continuing to grow from strength to strength. She’s a great example of what’s possible with commitment, resilience, and the right support behind you.

One of the strongest colour trends is a move towards earthy, nature-inspired hues – timeless shades that feel grounding, calming, and restorative.
It’s perfectly in step with a desire for spaces that reconnect us with the natural world.
For New Zealanders, spring is the ideal time to embrace such palettes. With longer days and more sunlight pouring into our homes, earthy colours glow beautifully to create interiors that feel both warm and uplifting. And, in celebration of Best in Build, and with Mexico as Verve’s featured overseas destination, we thought why not lean into its desert landscapes to borrow tones inspired by sun-baked terracotta, cactus foliage, and golden tequila fields.
For example, the clay-like richness of Resene Tuscany or Resene Desert Sand pairs beautifully with the sage-green softness of Resene Spanish Green or Resene Cactus. Balance it all with a fresh neutral like Resene Blanc to keep the scheme, fresh, light, and airy.
These earthy tones, rooted in Mexico’s desert spirit, offer the perfect balance of grounded calm and seasonal optimism this spring.

Sometimes you don’t realise how tired a home looks, until it’s clean.
Then when the sun hits the cladding, the windows gleam, and suddenly you remember what new felt like.
Yet too often the trades that promise that feeling fall short. Late arrivals. Vague quotes. Jobs rushed and forgotten.
Most homeowners have their own stories. Somewhere along the way, parts of the home-services industry stopped holding themselves accountable.
I built The SoftWash Company to write a new script.
For us, raising the bar is the bare minimum. Show up when we say we will. Treat every home as if it’s our own. Communicate clearly. Never cut corners. Never make excuses.
And we “paint the back of the fence”.
It’s our way of saying: do the unseen work with the same care as the parts
everyone notices. The little details, perfectly rinsed windows, pathways left spotless, are what turn a simple wash into genuine service.
Because great service isn’t a gimmick. It’s not a secret coating or a clever upsell. It’s the small habits, the better care, and the longer-lasting results that protect your investment long after we’ve packed up.
Spring is here, and Auckland’s summer gatherings aren’t far behind.
Now is the moment to give your home the refresh it deserves before Christmas guests arrive and the barbecue season begins.
At The SoftWash Company, we don’t just meet the standard.
We set the new standard.
And we paint the back of the fence while we’re at it.

Why timeless design is the most sustainable choice for modern living
What does luxury mean in New Zealand homes today? For us at Nicola Manning Design, it’s not about excess or ornament. Luxury is about refinement – spaces that feel timeless, effortless, and deeply personal to the people who live in them.
Our clients are busy, high-achieving professionals. Their homes need to work hard: to be places of rest, of entertaining, of family connection. A luxurious home is not just beautiful; it must function intuitively. That’s why we design with equal focus on aesthetics, practicality, and longevity.
Take the kitchen, the centre of so many homes. A luxury kitchen is not defined by dramatic surfaces or showy finishes but by details that make life flow: drawers that are exactly where you need them, appliances hidden away until they’re required, generous storage that eliminates clutter. It’s about creating a space that feels calm, even when life is busy.
The same philosophy applies to bathrooms, bedrooms, and living spaces. Luxury is a tactile experience – the weight of a well-made handle, the softness of linen drapery, the glow of warm lighting. These details may seem subtle, but together they create a sense of ease.
We also believe true luxury stands the test of time. Trends come and go, but the most rewarding interiors are those that feel just as right in 20 years as they do today. That is where timelessness becomes sustainable. When a space is designed with enduring materials, craftsmanship, and consideration, it doesn’t need to be ripped out and redone every few years. Instead, it evolves gracefully, saving resources while continuing to enrich everyday life. Sustainability, in this sense, isn’t only about recycled products or energy
efficiency, it’s about designing homes that truly last.
“True luxury is timeless and sustainable – a home that enriches life today and endures for tomorrow.”
At Nicola Manning Design, our role is to guide clients through this process with clarity and structure. A home of this calibre doesn’t happen by accident. It requires careful planning, collaboration with trusted craftspeople, and a design programme that ensures every decision is considered. For our clients, that means peace of mind –no surprises, no overwhelm, just the excitement of seeing their vision come to life.
We are proud that our approach has been recognised with multiple awards, but more importantly, it has given our clients homes that feel both beautiful and future-proof. To us, that is the definition of luxury: not something you admire from a distance, but something you live in, touch, and enjoy every day.
Luxury, when done well, is not intimidating. It’s welcoming, enduring, and deeply personal. Above all, it’s liveable – and because it is timeless, it is naturally sustainable.

This project was a deeply personal reimagining of a home. The kitchen is a space designed to feel immersive and expressive – a retreat that reflects the vision of both owners. kitchensbydesign.co.nz
Designer Michelle Gillbanks of Kitchens By Design became involved in this project from day one. The clients were searching for the right designer who could bring their dream to life. With lots of great ideas between them, Michelle offered guidance on the blend of materials and with thoughtful communication brought together a shared vision.
"At the heart of this transformation is a kitchen that commands attention – a space where form and function are perfectly balanced. Floor-to-ceiling band-sawn timber veneer cabinetry, finished in a deep grey wash, brings both drama and warmth,” says Michelle.
Its textured surface creates a cocoonlike atmosphere, while open shelving breaks up the vertical expanse, offering space for curated displays that reflect the homeowners’ personality and style.
The central island serves as the anchor of the space. The countertop, with its dramatic dark brown background crisscrossed with veins of gold, introduces a sense of sophistication, enhancing the rustic palette. More than a workspace, the island is a natural gathering point for their guests.
Flowing effortlessly from the kitchen, the adjoining dining and living areas continue the story of texture and contrast. Earthy tones and dark finishes pair seamlessly with the raw natural timber flooring, creating a cozy, grounded vibe that feels both elevated and lived in.
This home is defined by contrasts –light and dark, smooth, and textured, modern, and rustic. Its north-facing aspect floods the interiors with natural light, highlighting the richness of the materials and enhancing the sense
of atmosphere. Every element, from the cabinetry to the flooring, has been chosen with intention to support both functionality and mood.
This project was more than just a renovation – it was a realisation of the vision of both owners, carefully curated to deliver a truly reimagined kitchen, delivered with authenticity and care by the team at Kitchens By Design. “The result is a home and a kitchen design that is not only beautiful but also emotionally resonant: rich in character, layered in texture, and made to be lived in,” says Michelle.
The experienced team at Kitchens By Design offers an integrated design-tocompletion service. If you’re looking for a new kitchen, please call (09) 379 3084 to make an appointment with one of their designers. Kitchens By Design’s showroom is located at 9 Melrose Street, Newmarket.

Second Nature has been committed to delivering excellence in landscaping for decades. Founded in 1996, the company began by faithfully executing the creative visions of some of New Zealand’s leading garden designers.
Over time, it has evolved into a fullservice landscaping company, offering design, construction, and maintenance – while continuing to collaborate closely with some of the country’s top designers.
“As the landscaping industry has grown more sophisticated, so too has Second Nature, embracing new technologies and methodologies to meet the demands of increasingly complex projects,” director Janet Clarke tells Verve. “With a highly skilled and experienced team, we consistently deliver intricate, high-quality projects that meet the exacting standards of contemporary clients. We are proud to have received multiple industry accolades, including the Supreme Award at the last two Registered Master Landscapers’ Landscapes of Distinction Awards.”
How do you respond to the wide range of client requirements?
No two clients – and no two gardens –are ever the same. Every project brings a unique combination of scale, style, and complexity. Our team is wellequipped to meet these challenges, offering flexibility and expertise across the board.
The key to every successful project is clear, responsive communication. From concept to completion, we work closely with our clients to ensure expectations are met – and ideally, exceeded. Whether we are collaborating with a designer or leading a full-service transformation, our focus remains on delivering thoughtful, beautiful, and functional landscapes tailored to each individual brief.
How do you stay on top of landscaping trends, both globally and in New Zealand?
Many clients come with ideas sparked by overseas gardens. We love working with those ideas and also partner with leading NZ designers whose work extends beyond these shores.
Our 2025 Supreme Award-winning Garden, located in the heart of Ponsonby, is a great example – a space where the design by Damian Wendelborn was inspired by the work of a leading Italian designer. Both of our recent Supreme Award gardens incorporate strong elements of biodiversity, creating environments that support insect and birdlife – a growing priority for many of our clients.
Edible gardens, too, remain a popular and enduring trend. We have considerable experience in integrating fruit and vegetable production into elegant and productive outdoor spaces.
How valuable is a garden in our increasingly busy lives?
A garden offers much more than visual appeal – it becomes a vital extension of your home and lifestyle. Great design transforms outdoor areas into spaces of beauty, productivity, and peace, but to realise a garden’s full potential and to maintain the value of your investment, careful planning and professional advice are essential – services that Second Nature delivers with pride.

Design Warehouse’s new 2,600sqm² purpose-built showroom in Auckland sets a new benchmark for furniture retail in New Zealand.
Designed by award- winning architect Jack McKinney, the showroom combines striking industrial design with a refined customer experience. High ceilings and Design Warehouses signature corten steel detailing create an impressive architectural backdrop, reflecting both strength and sophistication while highlighting the breadth and quality of the collections.
One of the showroom’s most notable features is a series of floor-to-ceiling floating chair walls, showcasing the depth and variety of the brand’s seating range. This innovative display is complemented by a mix of curated lifestyle room sets, carefully designed to inspire customers and encourage exploration throughout the space. Overhead, suspended rafts filled with
greenery and an abundance of plants soften the industrial aesthetic, bringing the outdoors in.
At the heart of the showroom is the launch of Design Warehouse’s latest outdoor ranges, taking pride of place alongside its core collections and a select offering of indoor pieces, while the Design Italia indoor furniture lines are located on the mezzanine level.
The coffee bar located on the mezzanine provides customers with a place to pause and enjoy a refreshment while browsing the collections or consulting with staff on design choices. This considered detail reinforces the showroom as both a destination and a hub for inspiration.
With its scale, architectural detail, and immersive presentation, the new showroom delivers a distinctive retail destination that invites discovery and elevates the way customers experience furniture in New Zealand.

There’s a new way to live outdoors in New Zealand, and it starts with the push of a button. Suncraft’s automated retractable shade sails bring European engineering to Kiwi backyards and commercial spaces - delivering shade when you want it, sunlight when you don’t, and year-round resilience that suits our changeable climate.
Custom designed and manufactured in Europe, these premium sails pair architectural elegance with serious performance. The fabric ranges offer high UV protection while remaining beautifully light and refined; hardware is precision-built for strength, longevity and clean lines. “We choose components the way architects choose structure - every detail has to earn its place,” says Suncraft co-owner Josef Fruhmann.
New Zealand conditions demand more than a fair-weather solution. Suncraft’s systems are purpose-selected for local wind, sun and light rain, with options for height adjustment to chase the lateafternoon sun, integrated wind and rain
sensors, and smart-home connectivity for hands-off control. “NZ weather can change in minutes,” Fruhmann notes. “Our sails respond in seconds—open for warmth, retract for wind, and protect the textile when it’s not in use.”
Architects nationwide are specifying Suncraft products for precisely these reasons. The sails can span impressive distances with minimal structure, freeing up floor area and preserving the clean geometry of contemporary builds. Custom 3D simulations help designers and clients visualise shade patterns across seasons, while a palette of refined colours and mast styles supports everything from coastal minimalism to alpine timber architecture. “Great shade should feel invisible until you need it,” says Fruhmann. “That’s the brief we design to.”
Suncraft is pleased to introduce Cool Awnings as its authorised retailer in Auckland, bringing expert consultation, installation and aftercare to the region. With decades of local experience, the Cool Awnings team understands
site exposure, fixings and design considerations—and collaborates closely with Suncraft’s specialists for a seamless result from concept to installation.
There’s nothing quite like this on the New Zealand market: a retractable shade solution that feels as considered as your architecture, operates with fingertip ease and stands up to the elements.

An unreviewed trust is akin to a classic car that has been sitting in a garage for years – it may look impressive, but it’s unlikely to be roadworthy. The risk is that its structural flaws will only be exposed upon a challenge – whether from a creditor, a relationship property claim, or a disgruntled beneficiary. At which point, it’s too late.
A professional trust review – essentially a Warrant of Fitness for your estate plan –is the necessary diagnostic tool. It stresstests the structure against the current legal framework and your personal circumstances, which have likely also evolved. A comprehensive review should address several key questions:
Trustees . Are your current trustees appropriate? Do they understand their
legal duties under the new act? Is a professional, independent trustee now required to ensure compliance and impartiality?
The Trust Deed. Is your trust deed still fit for purpose? Does it allow for sufficient flexibility regarding distributions, investment powers, and the appointment of new trustees? Crucially, does it properly address the new default duties?
Asset Structure. Are the assets held within the trust still correctly structured? Has the trust’s debt been properly recorded and acknowledged? Are gifting programmes complete and documented?
Purpose and Beneficiaries. Does the trust still align with your original intentions? Have family circumstances changed (e.g.

BoConcept
Bergamo Sofa
Relaxed coastal living meets Scandinavian design with BoConcept’s Bergamo sofa. Its low, inviting profile, soft curves, and generous cushions create effortless comfort, while tailored details keep the look sophisticated. The perfect blend of laid-back elegance and timeless Danish style for modern homes.
From Scandi to fika, how to get Scandinavian style in your home.
Our admiration for Scandinavia is something we just cannot shake. There is a draw we have to the brightness, the open-mindedness, and the beauty of a collection of countries who are confident, thick-skinned and, in their approach to many things, seemingly immune from the stresses and worries of the world!
Scandi style has become a broader term for several different design approaches and ideas, but can be best traced back to the movement that started in the 1950s. It focuses on a lack of clutter, promoting minimalism, clean lines, straight edges, and with a base of colours and tones that focus predominantly on white, whilst also utilising grey and neutral colours.
On top of these are laid darker shades –usually furniture and rugs – so colour moves into the foreground against a background of harmonious hues. At the heart of Scandi is an appreciation of light. You’ll rarely see a black wall or a shaded corner.
Hygge, in fashion, in outlook and in interior design, refers to finding comfort, pleasure and warmth in the things around you. It is cosiness and contentment, and linguistically links to the word ‘hug’ – albeit an embrace stimulated by interiors, not actual bodily contact. In the design sense, this means rugs, throws, cushions, plumped up beds, but all undertaken whilst still obeying the Scandi rulebook.
Cited as the new hygge, lagom is more about ‘not too little, not too much’. A tad less indulgent than its plaid-clad predecessor, lagom is about finding the balance in life. In interiors it is interpreted as having less clutter, with a focus on good-quality, ecologically sourced investment pieces.

Transform your bedroom with BoConcept’s Element Bed by Morten Georgsen. Featuring modular design, refined vertical reeding, and sleek push-to-open storage, Element balances style and practicality. Choose from wood or upholstered finishes to create a space that’s personal, timeless, and beautifully functional.
A step on from the Ikea clothes rail you used to overload in your student dorm, this is more about having a storage unit which is almost a work of art in itself, which you can then use to create a capsule wardrobe of your most aesthetically pleasing pieces.
Fika is a pause in the day. Often characterised by a cup of coffee and a piece of cake in a non-work setting, uninterrupted by others, this notion of resetting and taking a moment can be played out with or without the need to refuel with food and drink. In simple terms, it’s a case of taking five minutes to re-evaluate; then go again!
Another lesson from the Finnish book of feng shui, philistines will rejoice at the notion that tech should never find a place in bedrooms. Scandi-style has always had a certain minimalism to it and this is now beginning to extend into people’s desires to have bedrooms that are an oasis rather than an extension of one’s TV room or office.
Finally, live your life like a Nordic noir television show by drenching your home in monochrome. Following in the lagom style of not too little, not too much, the trick is to add touches of black and white while keeping the overall colour scheme soft and neutral: a chevron throw, for example, or your favourite black and white film poster.
A
land of dazzling contrasts where ancient civilisations meet modern creativity and vibrant traditions flow into world-class natural wonders.
Mexico is home to pyramids, Aztec ruins, migrating whales and Unesco-listed celebrations – a country where every moment is beyond memorable.
SIGHTS AND CULTURE
Mexico brims with contrasts – especially in its capital and southern states. In Mexico City, pre-Hispanic dances, mariachi, and Día de Muertos parades mingle with Rivera’s murals, Kahlo’s legacy, and bold street art.
Southeast, the Yucatán Peninsula dazzles with Maya pyramids, lush forests, and Caribbean beaches. Snorkel cenotes, kayak through reserves, or stroll Mérida’s pastel streets before sunset cocktails.
In Chiapas, misty highlands and traditional markets reveal enduring Maya culture. San Cristóbal’s cobbled lanes echo with Indigenous languages, while Palenque’s jungle ruins and San Juan Chamula’s vibrant Sunday market showcase Mexico’s living traditions and deep, diverse cultural heritage.
Home to the likes of the Olmec, Maya, Toltec, and Aztec peoples, ancient Mexico was a cradle of advanced civilisation long before the arrival of the Europeans. They were societies that built great cities and pyramids, produced extraordinary art, and studied the skies to guide farming and spiritual ceremonies.
In the early 1500s, Spanish conquistadors arrived, bringing smallpox and other diseases that devastated the Aztec population, while also destroying Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital. Mexico wouldn’t gain independence from Spain until 1821.
Día de Muertos – or Day of the Dead – observed on 1 and 2 November, is a Unesco-recognised Mexican festival that combines pre-Hispanic beliefs and Catholic traditions to honour deceased loved ones. Its origins trace back millennia to Mesoamerican cultures who considered death to be part of a cycle rather than an end point. Spanish colonisation introduced All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, which were blended with indigenous rituals to form the modern holiday.
Key rituals include building ofrendas (altars) laden with candles, photos, favourite foods, marigolds (cempasúchil), sweets, and other items meaningful to the departed. Graves are cleaned and decorated while families gather to share meals at cemeteries, and hold vigils into the night. Parades, calaveras (skull motifs), and La Catrina face-paint, are famous vibrant visual features.
In places like Oaxaca, Mexico City, and Michoacán – especially the island of Janitzio – the celebrations swell into especially spectacular displays. Puerto Vallarta’s downtown and waterfront host vivid parades and community altars, while local markets overflow with decorative ornaments, and gatherings that mix solemn remembrance with joyful life.
Mexicans take their sport very seriously. In ancient times, losers of a ritual ball game were even put to death, while some dangerous sports, like bullfighting and rodeo – which was invented in Mexico – are still played today.
The country’s most popular sport, by some distance, is football, and next year, Mexico will co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup along with the USA and Canada. The competition’s official opening game will take place at the 83,000-capacity Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Mexico’s natural wonders vie with its cultural ones in terms of magnificence. It’s an Eden home to over 23,000 animal species that roam it deserts, jungles, and coasts – few more awe-inspiring than the grey whales of Baja California that, each winter, travel 16,000km from the Arctic to lagoons like San Ignacio, where mothers teach calves to swim. Other offshore visitors include blue and humpback whales, dolphins, and turtles that come ashore to nest. Mexico’s reefs are a diving paradise that teem with rays and sharks and kaleidoscopic fish. Inland, jungles cradle ocelots, jaguars and troops of monkeys, while skies fill with scarlet macaws, and millions of migrating monarch butterflies in Michoacán. Wildlife tourism here blends spectacle with conservation, offering encounters that are not only breathtaking but also deeply responsible.
Tequila and mezcal both hail from from Mexico and are made from the core (piña) of agave, but they diverge in several key ways. While tequila is technically a type of mezcal, it must be made specifically from blue agave, while mezcal can use many agave species such as espadín or tepeztate.
Their production methods also differ – tequila piñas are cooked in ovens and distilled in copper pots, whereas mezcal’s are roasted in underground pits using wood, charcoal or volcanic rock and often distilled in clay. Distinct flavour profiles arise from
these different methods, with tequila tending to be more agave-forward and (sometimes) smoother and mezcal delivering smoky, earthy, notes. Also, their geographical origins and ageing and labelling systems vary, too.
Contrary to popular misconception, tequila bottles never contain a worm, but mezcal sometimes does, a practice known as con gusano. The larva (gusano) in some bottles originally came from moths that live on agave, but since the mid-20th century, some mezcal producers began adding them as a marketing gimmick. And no, the ‘worm’ is not an hallucinogenic!

WORDS — MARCUS ATKINSON
At Webb’s, New Zealand’s premier auction house, we’ve seen a surge in interest for aged Tequilas and rare Mezcals. This month, we spotlight their roots in Jalisco and Oaxaca, Mexico.
Tequila, made exclusively from blue agave and aged in oak, spans a spectrum; from crisp and peppery to rich, caramel-laced Añejos and Extra Añejos with complexity rivalling fine whisky. Whether sipped neat or paired with citrus and salt, it’s a spirit of place, tradition, and celebration.
Mezcal is tequila’s wilder cousin, and Oaxaca is its beating heart. If you haven’t explored mezcal yet, now’s the time. Crafted from a broader range of agave species and roasted in earthen pits, mezcal offers signature smokiness and earthy depth.
Artisanal mezcals are often produced in tiny batches by family-run palenques (distilleries) using centuries-old techniques. Each bottle reflects not just a region, but a village, a producer, and often a single agave variety.
Mexico’s agave spirits are more than party drinks; they’re cultural artefacts. From the highlands of Jalisco to the valleys of Oaxaca, each bottle tells a story of soil, sun, and slow craftsmanship.
Whether you’re building a collection or just curious, Webb’s auctions are a great place to start your agave journey.
In short, tequila speaks of clarity and restraint. Mezcal tells a story of fire, flavour, and untamed character.

Just as that portrait of Che Guevara has become the defining symbol of Cuba, many will similarly associate the face of Frida Kahlo with Mexico. And the similarities between the two legendary cultural figures don’t end with iconic imagery.
Frida, who found fame predominantly through her self-portraits hailed for their honest and raw approach that spoke to her physical and emotional pain, was born in 1907 in Coyoacán. An early bout of polio signalled a life plagued by illness and injury.
Next month, a lesser-known painting by the Mexican artist will go up for auction at Sotheby’s and is expected to achieve a record-breaking price of US$40 million to US$60 million. The painting, titled ‘El sueño (La cama)’ – or, ‘The Dream (The Bed)’ – may just top the price for a work by any female artist; the highest price at auction for a Kahlo work to date is US$34.9 million, paid in 2021 for ‘Diego and I’, depicting the artist and her husband, Diego Rivera.
Diego Rivera is, of course, another major figure of 20th-century art, a status achieved long before his marriage to Frida. Having trained in Europe, Diego explored Cubism and PostImpressionism before developing a distinct style marked by bold, socially conscious murals. A committed Marxist, he joined the Mexican Communist Party and hosted exiled
Leon Trotsky during the 1930s. His murals in Mexico and the United States include the Detroit Institute of Arts and the controversial Man at the Crossroads at Rockefeller Center, which was destroyed after Nelson Rockefeller objected to the inclusion of Lenin’s image.
The first, fleeting acquaintance between Frida and Diego occurred in 1922, when she was just 15, and him 36. Diego was painting the mural ‘La creación’ at the Simón Bolívar Amphitheatre in Mexico City. He regaled her with stories of his time in Paris where he befriended the likes of Picasso and Modigliani.
Three years later, a bus that Frida was travelling in collided with an electric tram, an accident that the artist later recalled as being “not violent but dull and slow, and it injured everyone, me more seriously”. The scene, however, was carnage. A metal rod skewered Frida, her spine, collarbone, and ribs were shattered leaving her in such a gruesome state that she was initially left for dead at the hospital. Bedridden, she took up painting.
continued over page
“There have been two great accidents in my life that have broken me,” Frida later wrote in her journal. The first was the tram, the second was Diego.
The pair were reacquainted in 1928 by a mutual friend, the photographer Tina Moditti, and, a year later, Frida and Diego married. The muralist encouraged his wife to pursue her craft, and they would often include images of the other in their work over their 25 years together. For a time, they lived in twin houses in Mexico City designed by the famed painter and architect (and friend of Diego) Juan O'Gorman which were connected by an
elevated bridge. It was a period of great creative output for Frida, and she painted much of her best work. Diego assessed Frida’s genius as possessing “a merciless yet sensitive power of observation”.
However, their relationship was anything but a fairytale love story, rather it was one marked by dramatic fights and continual philandering – on both sides. Diego even had an affair with Frida’s sister, Cristina, and, in 1937, Frida – who was openly bisexual – enjoyed a brief but profound tryst with Trotsky and later dedicated a portrait to him.
In 1939, the “dove and the elephant” as they had come to be known (an observation first made by Frida’s parents) divorced, only to remarry a year later. That same year, Frida was arrested on suspicion of being an accomplice in Trotsky’s murder after he was offed with a blow to the skull with an ice axe (the artist was soon cleared of any involvement).
Frida became ever dependent on alcohol and painkillers during the final few years of her life as her health deteriorated dramatically. In 1953, her right leg was amputated at the knee, and soon after,
upon the discovery of another affair by her husband, she attempted suicide.
“They amputated my leg six months ago, they have given me centuries of torture and at moments I almost lost my reason,” she wrote in her diary in early 1954.
“I keep on wanting to kill myself. Diego is what keeps me from it, through my vain idea that he would miss me... But never in my life have I suffered more. I will wait a while...”
She wouldn’t make it to 1955.
Frida’s last days were spent bedridden with bronchopneumonia, her final diary entry read: “I joyfully await the exit – and I hope never to return.”
She passed away on 13 July 1954, with the official cause of death being pulmonary embolism, but no autopsy was performed. Many believed that she took her own life.
In the three-part BBC documentary, Becoming Frida Kahlo, Diego’s grandson, Juan Rafael Coronel Rivera, suggests that his grandfather may have helped Frida end her life as a final act of love.
“If your companion of life says, ‘I’m tired, I really want to go now, help me’ – well, maybe you try,” he says.
Frida Kahlo was given a state funeral at Mexico City’s Palace of Fine Arts. She was 47.

Achiote is a paste made from the berries of the achiote tree, which grows in Mexico. It is tangy, fruity and delicious, and is readily available online. If there is one recipe in this book that sings to me of Mexican sunshine and its effect on the produce, it would probably be this. The fruit and vegetables just taste better here. Pineapples are bursting with acidic, sherbety sweetness; tomatoes are ripe and plentiful; the chillies are hotter
350g tomatoes, halved or quartered
300g pineapple, peeled and sliced into wedges
1 green chilli, finely diced, plus extra to serve
½ red onion, very finely sliced
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar zest
Juice of 1 lime
2 tablespoons olive oil
Large handful of coriander leaves, roughly chopped
Handful of mint leaves, roughly chopped
For the halloumi
30g achiote paste
1 fat garlic clove
Juice of ½ lime
½ teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons olive oil
250g halloumi, sliced
Edited recipe extract from Mexican Table by Thomasina Miers, published by Quadrille. Available now internationally.
and have more flavour; even the herbs taste different (and there is a rich variety of them). This salad is a showcase for these flavours, best made when the sun is out. It's simple, quick and thirst-quenching, with the flavours of the fruit improving as they sit macerating in the lime juice, chilli and salt while you grill the tangy, meaty halloumi, giving the salad body. The whole thing brims with sunshine.
Start by assembling the tomatoes and pineapple. Tip them all into a large mixing bowl. Add the chilli, red onion, salt, vinegar, lime zest and juice and olive oil, and season with lots of freshly ground black pepper. Leave to marinate for 30 minutes while you prep the halloumi.
For the halloumi, use a pestle and mortar to bash together the achiote, garlic, lime juice, salt and 1 tablespoon of the oil. Cover the halloumi liberally with the resulting brick-red garlicky paste.
Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon oil in a large frying pan over a medium–high heat. Add the coated halloumi and fry for 1–2 minutes on each side until beautifully browned and tender. When you’re ready to serve, mix the chopped herbs through the salad, then serve topped with the halloumi, sprinkling with a little extra finely diced chilli, should you wish.

As you would expect, Spanish colonial influences can be seen throughout Mexico. The steady and fruitful exchange of ideas between chefs in both countries is thanks to a shared language and mutual admiration. I met Alfredo Villanueva Ulloa when cooking at a festival, and he came

to cook at Nicos when I was doing a stage there. He made a chicken rice that was ravishing. This is my seafood version, with an irresistibly spicy habanero allioli. It makes for a perfect weekend feast.
Clean the clams in cold water and empty into a colander to remove any grit. Discard any that refuse to open.
Heat the oil and butter in a large, 32–34cm paella pan over a medium heat. Add the onion, fennel, celery, bay leaves, fennel seeds, cinnamon stick and salt. Cook for 15 minutes until the onion starts turning translucent and soft; this makes the classic Spanish ‘sofrito’, slow cooking the vegetables to release their sugars.
Stir in the garlic and saffron and continue to cook for another 5 minutes. Next, stir in the rice and carry on stirring for 1 minute to coat the grains in the fat. Now pour in the wine and allow it to bubble for a minute, then add the stock. Cover the pan with foil and leave to cook for 25–30 minutes until the rice is al dente. About 5 minutes before the end of the cooking time, scatter over the clams and cover again, allowing them to steam cook. If the rice looks too dry, add a little more hot water or stock, but note that a good paella will form a deliciously caramelised crust on the bottom of the pan – this is the socarrat, the prized part of the dish.
Meanwhile, make the allioli. If using a habanero chilli, cover it with boiling water and submerge with a weight. Soak for 10 minutes.
Put the half the habanero or Scotch bonnet into a jug (pitcher) and blitz with a hand-held blender. Add the garlic, salt, mustard, vinegar and lemon zest and juice. Crack in the egg and extra yolk. Beat in the vegetable oil, drop by drop at first, then pour it in a thin stream. Now slowly beat in the olive oil. If it splits, whisk in a splash of hot water to bring it back together. Taste and adjust the seasoning.
When the rice is ready, scatter over the lemon zest and juice and the chopped herbs. Serve at the table, along with the allioli and lemon wedges.

To call this a traybake does this recipe a disservice – and yet a traybake is precisely what it is. Golden, crispy chicken skin and sticky pomegranate onions meld with sweet heat from the ancho chilli and lovely aromatics from the spices. The creamy tahini gives the plate a savoury note. Bliss. The juices are to die for.
INGREDIENTS
8 chicken thighs, or 1 chicken, jointed
3 red onions, each cut into 6 wedges
500g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
4 tablespoons olive oil
2–3 tablespoons pomegranate molasses, plus extra to serve
Large bunch of flat-leaf parsley
For the adobo rub
3 garlic cloves, skin on
2 teaspoons fennel seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
30g ancho chilli flakes
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1½ teaspoons soft brown sugar
1½ teaspoons sea salt
3 tablespoons orange juice
3 tablespoons olive oil
For the whipped tahini
100g tahini
4 tablespoons lemon juice
120ml (½ cup) water
½ teaspoon paprika
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon sea salt
Edited recipe extract from Mexican Table by Thomasina Miers, published by Quadrille. Available now internationally.
Preheat the oven to 220°C fan (gas 9). Take the chicken out of the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature.
To make the rub, heat a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the garlic cloves, still in their skins, and cook for 6–7 minutes until the skins have blackened and the garlic is soft. Add the fennel and cumin seeds, toast gently for 1 minute, then pour in the ancho chilli flakes. Toast for 10 seconds more, then empty the lot into a small blender or pestle and mortar, slipping the skins from the garlic. Pound or blitz to a paste with the cinnamon, brown sugar and salt, before stirring through the orange juice and olive oil. Rub this all over the chicken pieces.
Toss the onion wedges and potatoes in a large baking tray with 2 tablespoons of the olive oil and plenty of salt and pepper. Roast in the oven for 20 minutes before popping the chicken on top of the vegetables, tossing the whole lot with the excess adobo, the pomegranate molasses and the rest of the olive oil. Roast for 15 minutes in the middle of the oven, then reduce the oven temperature to 190°C fan (gas 6½) and roast for another 15 minutes. Season to taste.
Meanwhile, make the whipped tahini. Simply blitz all the ingredients in a small food processor until the mixture is light and blousy.
Serve the chicken on a large plate in the middle of the table, with the whipped tahini spooned in a circle around the edge of the plate, the chicken in the middle and the whole lot scattered with flat-leaf parsley and a drizzle more of the pomegranate molasses.
Note: If you opt for a whole chicken, add the breasts to the pan 10 minutes after the thighs. The bones will make an incredible stock.
MAKES 18–20 DOUGHNUTS
These little doughnuts, with their fluff y, apricot-hued interiors, are a proper treat. I love making them in the autumn when squash and pumpkin abound; they never fail to delight. Make this for friends you know well, as you will be frying them to order. But if everyone joins in, it can become the focal point of your gathering, the round balls puffing up in the oil and many hands diving in to toss them in the cinnamon sugar.
INGREDIENTS
250g (2 cups) white (all-purpose) spelt or plain flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
1½ teaspoons ground cardamom
Zest of 1 orange, plus extra to serve
½ teaspoon fine sea salt
2 heaped tablespoons soft brown sugar
160ml (2⁄3 cup) buttermilk or plain yoghurt
250g butternut squash/pumpkin purée
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
40g butter, melted vegetable oil, for deep-frying
For dusting
130g (2⁄3 cup) caster sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Note: You can reuse the oil three or four times. Allow it to cool, then pour through a fine sieve before pouring it back into its bottle.
Edited recipe extract from Mexican Table by Thomasina Miers, published by Quadrille. Available now internationally.
Sift the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and cardamom into a large bowl. Add the orange zest and salt and, using your fingers, rub the zest into the flour mixture to release its oils. Stir in the sugar.
In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk or yoghurt with the squash or pumpkin purée, using a fork to mash it together. Now add the eggs, vanilla and melted butter and mix well. Don’t worry if the mixture looks a bit lumpy. You can prepare the two mixtures up to this stage in advance.
In a third bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon for dusting and set aside.
When you are ready to cook the doughnuts, pour the oil into a deep 20cm pan to a depth of 10–12.5cm and place over a medium heat. Heat the oil for 4–5 minutes until it reaches 175°C.
While the oil is heating, take a large spoon and lightly fold a third of the dry ingredients into the wet. Repeat with the remaining dry ingredients until combined. Now scoop golf ball-sized balls of the dough into the oil using a spoon, five or six at a time, so as not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for a few minutes on each side. They will look dark and beautifully puffed up, but they need time to cook through, so reduce the heat if the oil becomes too hot and they look like they are burning.
With a slotted spoon, remove the doughnuts to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess grease, then transfer them to the cinnamon sugar for a light tossing. Repeat with the remaining dough, then scatter over finely grated orange zest and scoop onto a pretty plate, handing out to the hungry mouths that have magically appeared.
BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR
Designed to blend in with nature and built with deep respect for history and for the local community, this boutique hotel in Baja California offers a sensorial experience where gastronomy, architecture and excursions intertwine in perfect harmony.
Nestled in the heart of the desert, where the Pacific Ocean embraces the coastal chaparral and the peaks of the Sierra Nevada loom on the horizon, El Perdido emerges as a refuge of serenity and sophistication.
Hidden in plain sight, El Perdido reveals a a universe in which design and nature intertwine harmoniously. Inspired by indigenous buildings, each one of the spaces has been conceived to blend with the landscape, using natural materials such as local wood, clay, and stone. The architecture dialogues with the environment: the desert, the sea, and the sky are protagonists of a concept that needs no artifice. This philosophy is reflected in every corner, with stone paths that wind through the
native vegetation, where natural light dialogues with the cool shadow cast by the palm roofs and textures, evoking a deep connection with the earth. Every detail has been thoughtfully planned to make the stay an extension of the landscape, an invitation to contemplation and immersion in essential beauty.
The Jacales — private villas that reinterpret tradition with a contemporary approach — offer a sense of home without forgoing the exclusivity of a luxury hotel. These residences are characterised by their spacious terraces equipped with hammocks, a living area, a small kitchen, private patios with native flora gardens, and outdoor bathrooms that foster a sensorial connection with the surroundings.
From the heart of Oaxaca, Hotel Sin Nombre transcends the conventional. Conceived as a sanctuary where architecture, gastronomy, and art intertwine to awaken the senses, it invites a deeper connection with the city’s essence.
Housed in a 17th-century colonial mansion, more than a boutique hotel, Hotel Sin Nombre is conceived as a blank canvas for living, creating, dancing, or simply surrendering to the mystery of its corners. Today, this singular property opens the opportunity to share its story – what is revealed here is only a glimpse of an authentic, sensorial, and profound experience waiting to be discovered.

crystal clear waters and impressive underground caves will be the frame for capturing images that will remain engraved in the travellers’ memory.
Its 10 rooms and suites are located in a contemporary structure, which harmonises with the overall setting, and which stands out with its honest rusticity resulting from the chukum on its walls and the use of organic materials, like tropical woods and natural textures carefully crafted by cabinetmakers and artisans from the nearby localities.

Specialising in bariatric weight-loss surgery, cosmetic procedures, dentistry, and orthopaedic surgery, Reshape NZ provides safe, reliable, boutique overseas travel to Mexico (and Turkey) with personalised care, offering a holistic health and wellness approach throughout your journey.
“It started with three friends – myself, Kylie Brodie and Kylie Davies,” director Megan Stewart tells Verve . “Kylie Brodie had already had the surgery before me and was a huge supporter on my weight loss journey, and Kylie Davies I met when I went to Mexico and we had surgery together. We set up Reshape NZ as we felt we could offer something different –smaller, more intimate groups, boutique care customised to the individual, and a large focus on aftercare support.”
Why is medical tourism a great option?
“The level of care and expertise in Mexico is outstanding, and going abroad also ensures very little wait times – we have had a knee replacement arranged in two weeks.
“Plus, it offers you a chance to focus on yourself. You can reset your mind and focus on starting your journey in a positive way. There’s no cooking, cleaning, getting children ready for school or rushing out the door to work –this is solely about you!”
What sets Reshape NZ apart?
“Our strong focus on pre- and post-op care. This involves meeting with the surgeon before your journey begins. By the time you arrive in Tijuana, your
surgeon will understand you, and you’ll feel comfortable being in a new country.
“For bariatric surgery patients we offer the services of the incredible Sonia from Mind Empowerment with Sonia McIndoe both pre and post op surgery. She has had the surgery herself and is passionate about seeing every client succeed with her bariatric life coaching.”
What aftercare is available to patients?
“The surgeon will keep in touch during your recovery and beyond, always on call with any concerns you may have. The dietitian works prior to and after surgery to ensure you understand the changes required after surgery, and uses an app to communicate, provide suggestions and keep each client motivated.”
What are the benefits of the group packages?
“Travelling to a foreign country can be an anxious experience at the best of times – let alone for surgery. Although we support from afar with our solo travellers, some people prefer to travel as a part of a group with dedicated staff with you every step of the way. All logistics are taken care of. Travelling with a group is a fantastic way to connect with
other people embarking on their own journey. Many people remain lifelong friends. Companions are also absolutely welcome.
What do you find most satisfying about your role?
“I love the company and the team – we have such a deep passion for what we do. We spend so much of our time communicating with the medical staff to ensure our clients receive the very best of care and have an incredible experience. The best compliments are having referrals from past clients, and we love the regular updates about how the experience has changed people’s lives.”
Finally, what do you love about Mexico?
“I love the people, the vibrancy and the culture. The people are absolutely lovely, and offer a level of care and respect that is unseen elsewhere. The sights, sounds and smells of Tijuana awaken all senses. The most common phrase amongst clients is how safe they feel and how beautiful the country is!”

SERVES: 4
COOKING TIME: 2 hours
COOKWARE: Le Creuset Modern Heritage 28cm Shallow Casserole
A cosy twist on a French classic, this Cider Coq au Vin embodies the spirit of Le Creuset's Modern Heritage Collection - rooted in tradition yet refreshed for today. In place of red wine, dry hard cider brings a bright, nuanced depth to the braise. Layers of autumnal flavour unfold with tender chicken, sweet aromatics, and a luxurious mix of wild mushrooms. (While any mushrooms will work, wild varieties such as maitake, shiitake or oyster add an earthy richness.)
Perfect for cool-weather entertaining, it's a rustic yet elegant centerpiece that brings warmth to the table.
Prepare the chicken: Pat the chicken dry with a paper towel. Season generously with sea/coarse salt on both sides.
Roast the mushrooms: Preheat the oven to 230°C. Tear the mushrooms into smaller chunks. Toss with olive oil and salt, then spread on a lined baking tray in a single layer. Roast for 20-25 minutes, tossing once, until golden and starting to crisp. Remove it and set it aside. Reduce the oven temperature to 180°C.
Cook the bacon: First add a little oil to the Modern Heritage 28cm Shallow Casserole before heating gently. Add the bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until browned, about 8 minutes. Remove it with a slotted spoon and set aside. Discard most of the fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan.
INGREDIENTS
900g bone-in, skin-on chicken, preferably thigh and drumstick pieces
Sea salt or coarse salt
350g mixed wild mushrooms, such as shiitake, oyster, enoki
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 rashers thick-cut bacon, chopped into 2cm pieces
2 medium leeks, thinly sliced
1 fennel bulb, thinly sliced, reserve fronds for garnish
2 medium carrots, peeled and sliced
3 garlic cloves, finely grated or chopped
1 tablespoon plain flour
2 tablespoons brandy or Calvados, optional
2 x 375ml bottles dry cider, any good quality Australian or New Zealand variety
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon soy sauce
3 sprigs fresh thyme
Brown the chicken: Add the chicken pieces skin-side down. Cook it for 6-8 minutes until golden and crisp. Flip and cook another 2 minutes. Remove it and set it aside.
Cook the vegetables: Add leeks, fennel, and carrots to the casserole. Season with salt and cook, stirring often, until very soft and reduced, about 12 minutes. Add garlic and flour, stirring well, and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
Deglaze and build the sauce: Push the vegetables to one side of the casserole. Optional: Add brandy and deglaze the pan for 1 minute. Add cider, vinegar, soy sauce, and thyme. Bring to a boil.
Combine and braise: Return half the mushrooms and bacon to the casserole. Nestle the chicken into the sauce, skin side up. Cover with a lid and place in the oven for 1 hour.
Finish on the stovetop: After an hour, return the casserole to the stovetop. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat and cook uncovered for 12-15 minutes, gently stirring the ingredients to prevent sticking. The sauce should reduce by about half.
To serve: Remove from heat. Top with remaining mushrooms, bacon, and reserved fennel fronds for a fresh, aromatic finish. Serve straight from the casserole with crusty bread or creamy mash.

In the ever-evolving world of cosmetic medicine – where instant gratification often reigns supreme – Sculptra has long been carrying out a quiet revolution: an injectable treatment that doesn’t just fill, but builds.
Unlike traditional dermal fillers that offer immediate volume, Sculptra works beneath the surface to stimulate your body’s own collagen production, gradually restoring youthful contours and skin integrity over time.
Sculptra is composed of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible compound that has been used safely in medical applications for decades. When injected into targeted areas of the face, it acts as a catalyst for collagen regeneration, the essential protein responsible for skin’s firmness and elasticity. The result? A subtle, natural-looking rejuvenation that unfolds over weeks and months – not overnight.
But Sculptra isn’t just a solution for reversing the signs of ageing – it’s also gaining popularity as a preventative treatment. Starting in your late 20s and early 30s, collagen production begins to decline, leading to the first whispers of volume loss and fine lines. By introducing Sculptra early, patients can proactively maintain facial structure and skin quality, effectively slowing the visible ageing process before it takes hold.
One of the most compelling advantages of Sculptra is its longevity. While most fillers last six to 12 months, Sculptra’s effects can endure for up to two years or more. This makes it not only a cost-effective option but also a lifestyle-friendly one – ideal for those who prefer fewer touch-ups and a more gradual transformation.
Sculptra’s versatility is another reason it’s beloved by cosmetic practitioners. And because it works by enhancing the skin’s own scaffolding, the results are harmonious and balanced, never overdone. Patients often report that they look refreshed, not ‘treated’ – a subtle shift that’s hard to pinpoint but impossible to ignore.
For those wary of invasive procedures or dramatic changes, particularly those in the public eye, Sculptra offers a gentle alternative. There’s minimal downtime, and the treatment sessions are typically spaced out over several months to allow collagen to build gradually. This slow-and-steady approach aligns beautifully with Clinic 42’s ethos of enhancing what’s already there.
In a culture increasingly embracing authenticity and selfcare, Sculptra is more than a cosmetic fix – it’s a strategic investment in your skin’s future. Whether you’re looking to reclaim lost volume or preserve what you already have, this collagenboosting powerhouse offers a nuanced, long-term approach to facial rejuvenation.
So, if you’re seeking a treatment that respects your natural beauty while quietly turning back the clock, Sculptra might just be your skin’s best-kept secret.

For the first time in 17 years, celebrated Kiwi theatre star Ellie Smith takes to the stage in New Zealand with her poignant new one-woman show, Life on a Loop. Fresh from an "utterly uplifting" sellout season in London, this is a heartfelt exploration of dementia, love and care.
Written by and starring Ellie herself, Life on a Loop is a tender, funny and deeply human look at life in a rest home, told through the eyes of a devoted carer with a big heart.
“As soon as it opened in London, I knew New Zealand audiences had to see it," says director Jesse Peach. "People laughed, cried, and then laughed again. Ellie has created a story that raises serious issues without preaching – it’s moving, accessible, and full of heart.”

Still Growing Up
Gavin Hurley
8 October – 1 November
In early 2025, Gavin Hurley’s solo exhibition Growing Up captivated audiences at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery in Pōneke Wellington. Curated by then-director Jaenine Parkinson, the show brought together paintings and collages that deftly dissected the icons and “ideal exemplars” of late 20th-century New Zealand – figures who shaped the cultural backdrop of Hurley’s own youth.
Now, for the first time in Tāmaki Makaurau, a selection of these acclaimed works will be revealed in Still Growing Up. At its heart stands the singular figure of Rita Angus – the only woman represented in the original exhibition, and a towering influence on Hurley’s practice. Angus is more than subject; she is woven into Hurley’s own story of becoming an artist, a reminder of how the act of growing up is never truly finished.

While working into the early hours in the wintery isolation of a Parisian darkroom in 1921, the artist Man Ray
accidentally created a photogram by setting pieces of glass equipment on an unexposed sheet of photographic paper he discovered among the prints in his developing tray.
“Before my eyes an image began to form, not quite a simple silhouette of the objects as in a straight photograph, but distorted and refracted,” he would later note in his 1963 autobiography, Self Portrait. “… In the morning, I examined the results, pinning a couple of the Rayographs – as I decided to call them—on the wall. They looked startlingly new and mysterious.”
This ‘artistic accident’ freed him “from the sticky medium of paint”, allowing him “to work directly with light itself” while exploring his interest in moving between dimensions, media, and artistic traditions.
A true visionary, Man Ray was born Emmanuel Radnitsky in Philadelphia in 1890. He grew up in New Jersey before becoming a commercial artist in New York where he adopted the name Man Ray. He moved to Paris in 1921 where he soon established himself as a central figure of the Dada and Surrealist art movements. Though
the second world war forced Man Ray to return to his homeland, the artist went back to Paris in 1951, where he remained until his death in 1976.
His most iconic works would include an iron studded with sharp tacks and an image of woman’s back reimagined as a violin, both examples of his belief in the transformative nature of everyday items. As for his iconic rayographs, the Dada poet, Tristan Tzara, described them as capturing moments “when objects dream”.
Running at The Met in New York till 1 February, 2026, When Objects Dream is the also the name of the first major exhibition to examine the artist’s radical experimentation through the rayograph, while also showcasing scores of paintings, objects, prints, drawings, collages, films, and photographs in a body of work that totals two hundred.

“Anchored by Man Ray’s innovative and mesmerising rayographs along with new research and discoveries, this exhibition invites visitors to explore his ground-breaking manipulation of objects, light, and media, which profoundly reframed his artistic practice and impacted countless other artists,” says Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French director and chief executive officer. “We’re so thrilled to include 35 works by Man Ray in this exhibition as part of John’s incredible promised gift.”
By looking at the rayograph in this broader way, the exhibition also reconsiders what was arguably the most important period of his career – from his ambitious New York paintings around 1915 through to his work in Paris until 1929. Three of his newly restored films, Retour à la raison (Return to Reason); Emak Bakia; and L’étoile de mer (The Starfish) are screened within the exhibition, with further highlights including iconic objects like the iron studded with tacks, known as Cadeau (Gift), and his metronome, Object to be Destroyed, that keeps time with the swinging eye of his companion, the photographer Lee Miller.
“Man Ray challenged traditional narratives of modernism through his daring experimentation with diverse artistic mediums,” adds Hollein. “He was one of the most fascinating and multi-faceted artists in the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century.”

A film that chronicles the making of Bruce Springsteen's 1982 Nebraska album.
