Banging on the drums on the football field, surrounded by hundreds of other young musicians, local professional musician Joe Palumbo found home.
Music camps taught Palumbo the discipline to understand how important drum rudiments were.
“Music saved my life. If it wasn’t for music, I probably would have been one of those kids who got into a little more mischief than I should have,” said Palumbo, who has more than 30 years experience playing professionally throughout the country, including CBGB’s.

A new wave of young entrepreneurs is making a remarkable impact on the community.
Young trailblazers, aged 7-17, are gaining invaluable life skills, boosting their confidence, and building a network of friends through their participation in the Vegas Kids Zone (VKZ) Kidpreneur Market and the monthly workshops in the VKZ Kidpreneur Club.
The VKZ Kidpreneur Market is a monthly event that brings together young business owners, providing them with a platform to showcase their products and services.
These markets are colorful, fun, and bustling with creativity. From handmade crafts to innovative tech gadgets, the young entrepreneurs offer a diverse array of products, demonstrating their entrepreneurial spirit and creativity.
“Watching my child gain confidence and friends has been the best part of her journey as a kdipreneur so far,”
experience teaches them resilience, problem-solving, and the importance of hard work and perseverance.
Many kidpreneurs start out to earn funds and skills. The experience has increased their empathy for local kids in need. Most give back to the community in some way, from donating funds to products and their time at local non-profits.
With the support of her mom, Triana, Alena Winter started crafting items at age 3 to brighten people’s day. Her passion for creativity and her desire to help others blossomed into her burgeoning business. Now 9, she continues to grow her business and donates a good portion of her sales to local charities.
"Being a kidpreneur is like having a superpower. It’s so much fun seeing people smile because of something you made."
Cuzzable Creations is a testament to the power of collaboration and creativity. Cousins Brayden McCullon, CEO, Zariyah Ramirez - COO, Christian Hollowell, CSM, started just last September turned a shared passion into a thriving business. Read more here.
Angelina Agasi, who began writing at age 12, published her first book on Amazon at 14. Her series "Paws of Love" has captured the hearts of many readers. Now 17, she leads the VKZ Writing Contests, Teen Writing Club and is working on her first adult fiction book.
The VKZ Market helped local Ali M., 12, discover her talents and inner boss.
“Before, I thought I could never start my own business because I'm just a kid,” the middle schooler said. “I didn't think it was possible to get my business out there before me and my aunt found out about VKZ Kidpreneur Markets. It helped me feel confident about my business and made me feel like it's possible to own a business at age 12.”
The VKZ Kidpreneur Market and monthly workshops are more than just events; they are incubators of potential, nurturing the next generation of business leaders.
There are numerous opportunities for kids and their parents to expand their entrepreneurial skills, including Children’s Entrepreneurial Market, Biz Kidz and Young Business Kids events throughout the year.

I had an opportunity to sit down with Charles Johnson to discuss the Aviators, the Las Vegas Ballpark and how they fit into the local community . Charles Johnson, who goes by Chuck, is the GM and Vice President of Sales for the Aviators and has been in this role since 2011 but has been with the organization for 29 years total.
Chuck has worked in the sporting industry for a very long time, starting his career with managing a sports book in the Reno casino industry.
He has also worked with the Las Vegas Gladiators Arena Football team, the Professional Bull Riders, the Las Vegas 51s, and Las Vegas Thunder Hockey.
Chuck was really excited to share all the things that were incorporated into the Las Vegas Ballpark to level up the fan experience
“When we built this ballpark in 2019, we got a chance to completely redesign, what the fan experience would be from the previous location Cashman Field,” he said.
The enhancements at the Las Vegas Ballpark include an indoor climatecontrolled club, a 360-degree concourse that runs around the entire field so that fans can walk around, better food options, a swimming pool, breathable seating to accommodate the Las Vegas climate, and the largest score board in minor league baseball.
Chuck and his team have taken making the ballpark a community staple seriously, always looking for ways to bring the community in and not just for baseball The size and technology of the scoreboard has become a centerpiece at Las Vegas Ballpark, with off season events like family movies and Golden Knights watch parties being hosted at the Las Vegas Ballpark. The ballpark is also home to the annual Enchant Christmas event, that has light displays, ice skating, and other family friendly activities. The ballpark has also previously hosted a NFL Pro Bowl practice in order to give fans an opportunity to participate in the Super Bowl who were not going to the game itself.
And the community ties of the organization don’t stop there, with the Aviators assisting a little league team for underprivileged children by donating gently used baseball equipment, baseballs, and even letting them do a practice on the field at the ballpark. The ballpark also collaborates with businesses that need help raising awareness by allowing them to set up information tables in the concourse or throwing the first pitch.
They also have fundraising opportunities through Aviator game tickets that are available for businesses and organizations “When we look at community organizations and things, it’s our way to further give back to what has made us successful over the 41 years.”
This is the organizations 41st baseball season and 6th year as the official Triple A minor league team for the A’s. They play 75 games a season at their home stadium, Las Vegas Ballpark.

It’s a warm and sunny morning. The roar of engines fills the air as cars zoom around the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After months of preparing, the driver is eager for his turn and determined to win, yearning to show the crowd his skills behind the wheel. It’s another day in the life of local pro race car driver, Jason Reichert.
“I always believed I was going to be a race car driver and never had a plan B,” said Reichert, owner of JR Motorsports.
Prep for a race begins seven days in advance. “Not only getting ready physically, but mentally. Making sure I am prepared puts me at ease and lets me just race when the green flag drops,” said Reichert, a third-generation local race car driver.
On race day, Reichert wakes while moonlight is still illuminating the sky to meet with his highly trained team.
“We try to make the race day boring, meaning we have prepared so well that the day is uneventful until it is time to get in the car,” Reichert said “I like to get in the car early, and just relax and get in a good mental state. Once it is time to drive on track, it is go time.”
Racing is an exhilarating, yet demanding sport. “My life is exciting, and a lot of work,” Reichert said. “My favorite part of racing is the competition and the thrill of driving a race car to its limits.”

As you make your list of games to play and shows to watch, don’t forget to make a list of books to read this summer. The Homeschool Breakroom is an incredible resource for inspired reading!
If you want kids to be excited to read, then let them read what excites them. Whether it’s their baby brother’s board books, a coffee table book with beautiful pictures, or that predictable book series, just let them read.
Join a summer reading program. Check out the programs at Barnes & Noble, the public library, Half-Price Books, Home Base by Scholastic, and Camp Book It! by Pizza Hut. Some movie theaters even offer free movie tickets as a reward for reading.

Talkative cats, energetic cats, cuddly cats. Cats of various backgrounds roam the Cat Café in an L-mall off S Rainbow Blvd. The unusual café is part of Hearts Alive Village, a nonprofit rescue.
“It’s a rescue and adoption center as well as just a place for
the cats to relax and hang out until they can find their homes,” said Hearts Alive Village feline program coordinator Brittany Rutledge. On average, she has between 150 and 200 cats in her care. Some cats came as kittens, some were rescued on the streets, or others were surrendered by their families, but each love the attention, almost as much as the Cat Café visitors.
The goal of the Cat Café is to allow locals to get to know the cats up close and possibly bond. “It’s harder to tell a cat’s personality behind a kennel door,” Rutledge said. “People can see how cats react to them, other cats or kids. You see them lounging in the sun, you see them playing, running in a tunnel, whatever they want to do.”
The non-profit relies on the generosity of locals and outof-state visitors who make the Cat Café a destination.
There is a $15 donation fee to visit the cat cafe
Admission to the cat cafe includes prepackaged snacks and beverages. The donations cover medical care for the cats, including spaying and neutering and microchipping.
Grab a toy and play with a cat, or sit down on a comfortable chair with a lovable cat lounging in your lap.

Milpa is an up-and-coming restaurant that serves food that is culturally known as Mexican food but is really pushing the envelope of what that truly means. Actually, up and coming may not be accurate, it’s fair to say that Milpa has arrived. It ranks #22 on Yelp’s list of top 100 places to eat in 2024 and #7 on Yelp’s list of best taco spots. Owner and Chef Dj Flores is nominated for the James Beard Best Chef of the Southwest award
Chef Dj Flores is born and raised in Las Vegas with family roots from a small ranch style city in Mexico. His parents moved to Las Vegas in the ‘70s looking for a better life for themselves and their children. Growing up in a home where cooking was happening all day every day, Dj began working in restaurants at the age of 16. Dj did not attend formal culinary school and grew his skills by working in various kitchens under esteemed Chefs such as Jose’ Andres. He continues to grow his mastery by visiting restaurants all over the world, seeking other chefs looking to innovate new
dishes with healthy ingredients like himself
The concept for Milpa was born during the pandemic, as Dj and his fiancée set intentions to eat healthier and wanted to provide healthier options for others as well. Taking the dishes from his childhood, his many years of culinary experience, and his recent dietary adjustments, Dj set out to create a menu that reminded him of home and also included fresh, healthy dishes that appeal to all diet types.
“You gotta take everything, your experience, your culinary skills, and then you also gotta eat good,” he said. “So when I created this menu, it was, like of all that combined and I just did my own kind of art pieces.”
I would describe the food as art, with most dishes including a serving of fresh vegetables, adding not just color to the dishes but a greater depth of flavor. All of the sauces and dressings are made from scratch in-house.
When asked what he enjoys doing other than cooking, Dj
responded,“Cook
more.”
He and his fiancé also enjoy eating out and trying new foods and supporting local restaurants when they have down time. Some of Chef Dj’s local favorites are Ada’s Wine Bar, Esther’s Kitchen, and Edo. Chef Dj’s advice to young, upcoming chefs is to be patient and get out there and taste good food.
“Follow his footsteps, just be observant of what he does and how he cooks because that will play a role into you (and) into your career. Then also, eating out. I think it’s important to eat good. If you feel good, you’re eating good, you’re thinking good, and you’re more absorbed to get good ideas.”
In the midst of the awards and growth that Milpa has received since opening in 2021, Chef Dj continues to focus on what he can do better, such as opening more locations around the Las Vegas area, specifically Henderson and North Las Vegas. His dedication to the mastery of his menu can be tasted in every dish.
I will definitely be looking out for new projects from Chef Dj and returning to Milpa very soon. See you there!
“I think it takes a lot of experience, a lot of time, patience, know how, and follow your mentor Chef,” he said.

Whatdo youdo when you want a tasty treatbut summer weatherhas you feelinglike a rotisserie chickenin your ownhome?
You definitely don’t want to turn on the oven! That’s when your air fryer comes to the rescue. You can whip up a batch of these chocolate peanut butter cookies in a matter of minutes without heating up your kitchen! These softbaked cookies are perfect topped with ice cream while they are still warm
Directions
Ingredients
¼ cup cassava flour (I prefer Otto’s brand)
½ tsp baking powder
1 small pinch salt
¼ cup peanut butter (or other seed/nut butter)
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp granulated sugar
2 tbsp milk (regular or dairyfree)
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 tbsp dark chocolate chips
In a small bowl stir together your flour, baking powder, and salt. Set it aside.
In a mixing bowl stir together the peanut butter, both sugars, the milk, and the vanilla extract.
Preheat the oven to 350° F on air fry mode.
Add your flour mix to the mixing bowl and stir together, then stir in the chocolate chips You may need to finish bringing it together with your hands. Set the dough aside to rest for 2-3 minutes while your air fryer preheats.
Divide your dough into four balls then flatten each ball into a disc about 3 inches across.
Carefully line your air fryer basket with parchment paper and place the cookie dough on the paper. Bake the cookies for 4 minutes and allow to cool for 1-2 minutes before moving with a spatula to enjoy.

Public Speaking can be scary. It is one of the scariest things a person could do. In fact, 75% of people suffer from Glossophobia, the fear of public speaking. Glossophobia is actually the most common fear.
Kids, especially, have a hard time finding the confidence to speak in front of an audience, or even in front of a small group communicating peer to peer.
Strong public speaking skills can lead to better academic presentations and are highly valued in many careers, giving teens an advantage in future job markets.
Participating in a public speaking boot camp allows teens to interact with peers, practice teamwork, and develop social skills that are essential for personal and professional success.
Learning to speak in front of different audiences helps teens become more adaptable and comfortable in various social situations, preparing them for diverse life experiences.
Angelina Agasi, creative project director for Vegas Kids Zone has crafted a 12 week crash course on building confidence and raising self esteem for kids ages 10-18.
This Bootcamp will teach the 4 types of speeches in public speaking, the proper etiquette when presenting a speech, as well as when listening to a speech, the importance of being bold when you speak, and how to be respectful of others around you who are speaking.
Verbal Velocity Bootcamp is a prerequisite to our Verbal Velocity Speech Club (details to come) and is by enrollment only.
For the 12 week course: $60/first student + $10/ each additional student in family. Enrollment closes August 5.
